  • Hello and welcome to Bessemer and Lake Erie 902! In this video, we cover two chases of Bessemer and Lake Erie trains out of Conneaut, with the motive power on these trains being all Bessemer and Lake Erie painted engines. In an age where many believe the Bessemer has visually become a fallen flag to Canadian National, one can still find a lashup of solid B&LE if they look hard enough. All three of the last active road units on the property are included in this video, and footage was shot on July 7th and 8th 2020. Be sure to like, comment, share, and subscribe for more railroad-related content such as this. Happy Railfanning and Train Chasing!

I really don't get how disposing of the Hulett unloaders was considered so economical. Looks to me like the self unloaders are just dumping ore on the ground? So then it has to be handled again to load it into ore cars? But the Huletts could load the ore cars directly. Seems like twelve of these or a dozen of those to me. Sure maybe the boats unload a touch faster but you would think the cost of two "touches" for every load of ore would counter a lot of the savings?
Great video. Thanks! Unloaders or not, there's something magnificent about the iron range and its trains.

@@jackstephenson5238 This is copied and pasted from the group. Hope this helps!
Welcome to the Bessemer & Lake Erie (B&LE) RR Fanpage. A common question asked for new people to the railroad is the operations of the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad (B&LE). The B&LE runs from North Bessemer PA-Conneaut OH (in addition to a Branch Line, the Erie Sub/Girard Branch, that runs from Cranesville PA to Wallace Jct in Girard PA). Empty Ore Hoppers are taken North from North Bessemer PA, from interchange with the Union Railroad, up to the P&C Docks in Conneaut OH to receive Iron Ore from Vessels unloading there. Iron Ore is then hauled South back to North Bessemer PA, thus completing the circuit. The B&LE also handles manifest & scrap (the Misc Job), typically running it South from Greenville PA to switch industries along the line, most notably AK Steel in Butler PA.
Crews are based out of Greenville PA, roughly the halfway point of line. Typically, from Tuesday-Saturday, an Empty Hopper Train will receive a 0500-0800 crew to take it North from Greenville PA-Conneaut OH to turn on an Ore Train. The Ore Train then runs South to the Control Point Called Kremis (Just South of Greenville PA) to recrew. A Recrew typically can range from 1100-1500. The New Crew will take the Ore Train South to North Bessemer PA to turn on Empty Ore Hoppers and then head back North to Greenville PA for the night. On Sundays-Mondays the operations can be 2-3 hours later than Tuesdays-Saturdays. Extra Ore Trains occasionally do run, meaning that 2 ore trains complete the circuit in a given day. The Misc Job runs randomly (around 3 times a week) and can depart Greenville PA at anytime of the day. The Erie Sub/Girard Branch sees traffic typically once a month in the form of Lite Power going up to switch EMSCO Plastics in Girard PA. Occasionally a Covered Hopper(s) will be brought up with the power.
*Of Note, Is the 2 Lines, The High Line & The Low Line, around Greenville PA. The High Line bypasses downtown Greenville, and is utilized by the Southbound Iron Ore Train. The Low Line is utilized by the Northbound Empty Hopper Train, Misc Jobs, & Lite Power Moves. The Low Line runs through downtown Greenville PA, and it is used to access the Greenville Shops and Shenango Yard. Both of these Lines split at Control Points KO (Adamsville PA) & KY "Kelsy" (Between Greenville PA-Fredonia PA).
