Crazy to think Bugs bunny, Daffy duck, Barney, Woody woodpecker, Sylvester the cat, Porky pig and so many other iconic animated characters were all voiced by Mel blanc as his work for Disney isn't as well known as for his work with the Looney tunes and Hanna Barbara but it's nice to know he voiced a few Disney characters during his lifetime as thanks for teaching us a new thing too Mat. I remember reading somewhere that he also did the singing voice of Cyril, the horse from Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Honestly, I believe it. He sounds just like a British Bugs Bunny
That was an urban legend. He just didn't like them plus it was easier fir him to chomp, and then spit them out rather than have him swallow and then do the lines. He even said so in his autobiography that he didn't like them but ne never said that he was allergic to them.
I read once that Mel and another actor with deep voice (don't remember the name) did the singing of the Pink Elephants sequence in "Dumbo." Blanc apparentely did the "high" tone voices in that song. That fun and curious fact was wrote on wikipedia some years earlier but removed for some reason while someone from that site rewrite the Pink Elephants song article, so i can't assure you if that fact was real or not.
I’m pretty sure Mel Blanc voiced Pete in some of the older Mickey Mouse shorts. I think. Edit: I was wrong. Pete was actually voiced by Billy Bletcher who I think also voiced Spike in the Tom And Jerry episode, Quiet Please and the robber in the Looney Tunes episode, Bowery Bugs.
I think it's very cool, he's in the Carrousel of Progress. In a way you get to experience him for real. Kind of like meeting him, but maybe not personally.
Interesting story, back when I was in high school, I used to have a school counselor who would come over once a week to see me and in our downtime I showed her the original Animation Lookback on Walt Disney Animation Studios as this was WAY before the new Lookback. When we were watching the first part and we got to the part where you mentioned how Mel Blanc voiced Gideon but had his lines deleted asides from his hiccups, she brought up this interesting question: Was it kind of disrespectful of Disney to cut almost the entirely of Mel Blanc’s voice work? This is a question I definitely still remember and would like to hear other’s input. Feel free to provide your own answers.
Interesting story there as I grew up on his videos too and when I learned that almost of the voice work recorded by Mel was not used and only from his hiccups we hear him in the final film as I think it's a bit rude and disrespectful that Mel's voice wasn't used in the movie but I see what the filmmakers were doing when they decided to cut his talking out of the movie he's supposed to be a mostly mute comic sidekick and he works that way but we'll never know what he sounded like before this choice in character was made and you can see that as a sad thing which it is. Mel Blanc didn't voice Yosemite Sam in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. It was Joe Alaskey. Mel DID voice all the others, but because of his age at the time, he couldn't do Yosemite Sam's voice anymore. It was too harsh. So, they had Joe Alaskey do it, and for years I literally thought it was Mel because it sounds JUST like him.
