You're missing one more category of people. Some people don't care much about entertaining players or highest skill, some people want a lot of people they might not get to see interact in a more friendly and less formal setting. Rudolph, Ice, Android, heck, NE players falls into this category. Rudolph is an interesting player. Maybe he's not quite on the level of Wizzy, Lucky or Moon, but he IS the top player in his region, and it's a region that doesn't get a lot of chances to intermix with our own due to many factors. Having top players to play against is good for the growth of good players. Now, I can see why people would want to vote for the other two categories, and that's fine. I'm just saying, this other rationale also exists.
The only problem is the ridiculously low requirements to opt in... it should be top 25 MIOM + extra people that are top 50 MIOM and top'd 12 at a super major; or something along those lines. That will get rid of all the bullshit that the voting process has.
I don't see how anyone can actually get mad at the system. Summit might not be exactly what you want for a tournament. That doesn't mean they are doing it "wrong" or that anyone is being cheated. TBQH, if the concern is that it's pay for a say, a huge impact would be from sponsors supporting their players. With sponsor support, many top players could have a gigantic lead over others. In addition, the rules are set for the tournament ahead of time. Summit is NOT the top 16 players in the world. If it was, it would strictly invitational, criteria for an invitation would be set in place, and that criteria would be a requirement for all contenders. Summit is about REALLY GOOD players getting exposure, practice, and showcasing talent that people want to see. Just because you don't get what you want doesn't mean you have to go whine about it and call the system broken. Smash.GG is a company. Companies have a purpose, and that's to make money. Are the a non-profit? No. Are they a not-for-profit? No. Are they a charity? No. So what does that leave them as? A for-profit company. They made their business model, and you don't have to pay them for their services or support it in any way. It's not a scam, it's a business, and if you don't like it, take your money elsewhere.
