Throughout the video you showed this leaderboard showcasing the individual runners' cumulative best times, is there a link to see it somewhere?
I.e. the leaderboard shown at 20:27 for instance
@@tcoren1 Here! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15wdkLsmSU2T9Os1j-lISe-XmXH-l3Awk9xBipYnTQCI/edit#gid=1924947053
I've added it to the description as well :)
@@PracticalTAS nice. I was wondering if any individual runners managed to get sub 3 on their own runs, cool to know 2 people have already managed it
Really happy for those people who subscribed and got to find the next video faster
great video!! waiting for the ice climbers vid :)
Thanks for the comprehensive coverage! This community is awesome and I love being a part of it
Thank you again for all your help mega!
Hey! Its you!!
You are a genius
I heard abput you in a video
I got goosebumps when he got to your part. So sick man congrats!!
lmao imagine if you could phantom hit targets. the optimal run would need to be literally pixel perfect
Yeah I am very thankful that it is not actually possible to phantom hit targets.
@@PracticalTAS thank you for clarifying, a shlong can only get so hard
Mario 64 Master coming back after 15 years to reclaim the record was like watching an old muscle car beat a Ferrari. Absolutely awesome.
Like the avatar returning when the world needed him most.
That was my favorite part
Its like Matt Turk suddenly popping up and setting like five new Punch-Out! records
great video! also, not sure how possible it is, but it would be really cool to see over-lays of the first and last record set for each character to see how it's evolved.
That's an interesting idea, a full overlay might need TAS recreations of the records though since the cameras would get out of sync.
@@PracticalTAS So then the only question is: are you up to the task or know anyone who is and is willing to help?
@@PracticalTAS yeah I was thinking maybe there'd be an easier method of fixing the stage to a set view, similar to what stabilization software does. But I'm no video editor so I'll leave it up to the pros like you
@@justinzchia that probably wouldn't work since old runs are recorded with shaky cameras instead of screen recording software
No. . . I am the real Justin!
That is actually my name
Me: "Hmm, I wonder what other have been broken since? maybe the total is down to 2:59.7 or 8"
Practical TAS: "We went down to sub 2:57!"
*jaw drops*
There is something rather beautiful about speed runners coming out of retirement to teach the kids a thing or two.
“Hey guys, just coming back from a 15 year break. I got a new world record by the way.”
I love your BTT content, this was another really well organized and written video. So much respect for all of the people pushing Melee's single-player content to its limit!
I was around during the GameFAQs days! I joined the forums when the HRC topic was on number 10. I remember Tinister and OMFG I REMEMBER M64M. This was an enormous walk down memory lane. Thank you ptas!
You should join the smash stadium discord! I'm sure the guys would love to chat again discord.gg/TQvkHHS
I love hearing about TAS progress, because unlike Speedruns, it's not all just trying to have good enough reflexes until you win, or resetting & starting the run over if you don't get good RNG; A TAS is all about the routing & strategy, & not whether someone's luck or reflexes are good enough that day. & that's why I love it!
Thanks so much for uploading this! Will probably comment more later!

Thank you for making this incredible video. That was so much fun to watch. So glad to be part of this community
Mudi is from my home region, its the second smallest federal state in Germany
We have 3 active players (lmfao)
He is an absolute legend around here
The bombshell at the end. My jaw dropped outright. Every soul who's ever been within striking distance or WR in ANY stage is a monster, and the ones who've torn away huge chunks on their own are just too good to be believed. This is art.
I loved your scripted video on the Peach runs, and I was patiently awaiting your next video! This was a certified banger.
i was so invested in those 0.87 seconds that the ending blew me out of my chair
"Some youtuber named Practical Tas" -Practical Tas
Mario 64 Master is an absolute gangster for coming back after 15 years to reclaim what was rightfully his.
I look forward to seeing the new Nana (or was it Popo) route in another video, but for now know that I found your channel through Peach and am glad to see more. Looking forward to the next time I hear the Smash voice declare "A New Record!"
Come back to us, Mr. Smash man
Can you do a TAS self destruct tourney, there has to be a dominant character that can SD the fastest
There actually is a TAS of unlocking all the characters that uses SDs to get the game count up as fast as possible. It uses Captain Falcon because his combo of run speed and fall speed is optimal lol ruclips.net/video/gmOzz9kNV0M/видео.html
Even after the death of the competitive play scene, melee still remains a cult until this day LOL
mario 64 master sounds too cliche to be real
"its been 15 years... cant let sleeping dogs lie huh?"
*reclaims his record*
Practical TAS’s next video will be released on a frame when the timer displays a 4 in the hundredths digit :)
Great vid PTAS! I've really been looking forward to this.
No more?😢
Great video essay.
Serious question: if competitive Melee players can modify their controllers with notches for more reliable angles between gates, what's stopping BTT speedrunners from doing the same thing?
Nothing, but the bit about Pikachu he was saying it's not an angle where the control stick can rest against the rim at all
@@Chizypuff can’t you just make the rim bigger by adding more plastic?
@@Alsry1 yeah but then for every other time you want to move in that general direction you run into the plastic
I love how indepth your videos on BTT are. It reminds me of Summoning Salt
the two further second of improvement sounds even more interesting than this
What a great video 🙂 amazing as always
Also cool to see myself at 23:37 Pog
ThankEgg
Mario 64 Master is a mad man with the code sheets just to push Metroid world record just a few frames is remarkable 0/ McCloud and Pikachu and young link world records are impressive too :)
One player was responsible for sub 3, and that player was Matt Turk!! :p
Awesome, I've been waiting for a video about this bounty ever since your Peach Break the Targets world record history!
As a casual smash fan who's never been big into speedrunning, this was incredible. Honestly amazing narration and storytelling to draw you in and keep you invested in this tale. Despite a 25 minute runtime I was hanging on every word. Seriously well edited!
Wow! Easily my favorite part is the returning Samus runner, actually inspirational. One of those stories I wish i could explain to all my friends who don't know about speedrunning 😅
Mario 64 Master coming to set the record again after 15 freaking years was legendary! That was amazing man!
First, I just want to thank the Melee community. It helped me to become a better person. Quick question tho: If I really want someone to enter a Melee "inspired" event, what's the best way to do so? Fox taught me that money talks. Marth taught me to grab onto any opportunity I see. But Roy, tho. He said that if I tell my mom that I love her and she tells me that I don't have to do a 9-5 to impress her, then I'll succeed in life. Who's advice should I listen to?
The moment you notice names you know in other fields like Savestate, that I now for speedrunning Zelda OoT and not SSBM target contest :)
Damn, Samus players are built different, Mario 64 Master coming back 15 years later to get the throne back lol.
This is one of the coolest videos on gaming history I’ve ever watched. I never even liked melee but I’m just so happy there are games that so many people can band together to get excited about.
I took a 15 year break but now im back and i got wr, what a legend
Hey do you think you could do a video about which Melee pro has had the most influence on a characters tier list ranking by using the 2021 tier list then removing their wins and seeing how far that character drops in placement once they're removed to see how "good" they are with that character.
For example: if you did on for Jigglypuff and removed all of Hbox's wins from the stats and see where that character now lies on the tier list and how many places they've fallen.
astounding work by all parties. congratulations, smash fans.
22:28 "first blood was soon struck"
Hi, I'm Peter Griffin, here to explain the joke. what appears to be an error in scripting here is the inaccuracy in depicting the symbiotic relationship between the two words blood, and draw. at some point in history it became common for actions involving cutting human skin and rupturing the blood vessels underneath causing the blood to leak from out of the body into open air to be distinguished with the word "Draw". this is possibly most famously depicted in the movie "First Blood" which was released in 1982. in this film, the character Rambo, when talking to another character, says the legendary line, "they drew first blood, not me". granted, this use of the phrase is less literal than other uses, considering the first antagonistic action taken against Rambo was the harassment from the police officer which did not involve physical violence, but the point still stands. Now, as I was saying: this youtube video seemingly incorrectly uses the word Struck instead of Draw, though in this case the grammatically correct form of the word would be Drawn. this is NOT actually an error as has been pointed out by zero (0) other commenters before me, and there is no confusion that this comment needs to resolve. in truth, the writer of this script was actually referring to the way that the characters in beloved video game super smash brothers melee Strike the targets in one of the more technically inclined sub-game modes, "break the targets". in a classified interview sometime last month, user Practical TAS informed our interviewer that this choice of wording was intentional, and it spoke to the inherent violence of the game mode and the highly competitive nature of the speedrunning community.
Practical TAS declined to comment further.
M64M coming back be like "The Return of the King"
i wish we had break the targets in ultimate so bad
damn i was about to check what new stuff you had and this is actually the lasy video youve done
I love these speedrun history videos. They're always so fascinating!
You managed to miss yhe perfect name of "how melee players broke the target"
PTAS THE PEOPLE MISS YOU
I remember when 8 seconds on fox was considered near impossible...
Great video. I loved the peach break the targets one as well.
Rip tas
Great to see hanky panky on the young link leader boards! Incredible competitor and well above average speedrunner
I wonder if Sakurai knows of this part of the smash community. And if he watches with great interest as we do.
This video is soooooooo high quality and well edited
Oh wow, The saga continues, I can’t wait for the next video, this was was incredible
13:20 wow 4 frames
16:52 TWELVE FRAMES?! Brh
17:04 yeah I could buy a gamecube with that
17:34 bro got stacks

25:24 oh my GoooooooOOOOD bruh. Bruh
Goodness, Mario 64 Master is literally a robot
I cant believe it's been so long since the bounty was announced. I remember reading that thread. Absolutely wild.
A masterpiece. Well done by the Melee BTT speedrunners!
commenting to help out the algorithm
Wouldn't cardinal 1.0 improve some of the records if they aren't tas?
yes,, but controllers that have easy 1.0 are banned by the players to maintain parity with the old records
Ah yes another speed running history video!!!! Just what I was craving. Not a lot of people cover these things.
that video was awesome. it really felt like a JOURNEY. i dont even play melee but shoutout to everybody that worked their asses off for those records
what outro song was that
Could you leave a link to this guy "Practical TAS"'s RUclips channel? I want to check his stuff out.
Wonderful video! Thanks for making it and shout out to all of the people behind the BTT push :)
Awesome video. Really beautiful community effort and your passion for this really shines like it did in the Peach video.
Sub 2 minutes next 😂
Amazing archiving work
its so insane how much skill some people have. truly incredible.
so glad you're continuing to make stuff like this, love your videos andrew
is that the same hanky panky from the melee stats vid at 20:26
Yes! He previously held the Peach BTT world record!
Sakurai 2001: lets create a fun game where characters from other games fight eachother :)
Smash community 2021: PAYING $30.31 PER FRAME SAVE
This video was recommended to me 18 times
And I'm glad I finally watched it
ayy my reddit post made it in the vid lolol
great storytelling and vid! :)
I was concerned none of the Link's records would be shaved down during this race to sub 3, but mad props to
MegaQwertification for managing to get Young Link a spot in this fascinating video with his dedication, you have my respect sir.
:)
based content as always, love hearing about the speedruns/TAS/insane gaming achievements that you're passionate about - looking forward to the next one :)
I love how were all playing the old smash x years later. So unhappy they never included targets in future smash games. Hope they bring it back?
65536 is the number of values in two bytes. aka 16 bits. So the angle of the fire was determined by a "randomly generated" Word.
LinksDarkArrows, is your discord profile pic from The Thousand Year Sword, by any chance?
I'm going to remember this video to show people when I tell them that speedrunning is absolute NONSENSE.
“A RUclipsr and TASer named ‘Practical TAS’ was working on a video” hey, I know him
Somome got 3:05:25 with fuckin Melee Bowser. That's just crazy for me to imagine.
Why do a feel serious deja vu while watching this video? Like I’ve already seen this video before but it just came out the other day 💀
Samus's run is just too fucking sick. Those wavelands down the stairs o_o
Can't wait for the next part! This is so cool
So how much what the payout If you don’t count money payed to yourself? Because that should be the real amount!!!
Ok so we should not be counting any money that was paid to yourself. That’s doesn’t make sense to say.
So considering the time investment, the bounty paid less than minimum wage :O
He missed the opportunity to call it “melee’s sub-3-minute target”
*This reminds me of the Dojo mode in the amazing speedrunning game Rayman Legends.*
Since some frames are 0.01 and some are 0.02, isn’t it possible that the road to sub 3:00:00 may actually have been more or less than 53 frames since it’s distributed among different characters?
No because the total time is calculated by converting everything to frames and then converting the total frame count back to time. So 1 frame is 1 frame, whether it's 0.01 or 0.02 for that specific character.
That money aint worth that amount of struggle fook that. But good on the madlads that tried and completed.
the game is so fast but the talking in this video is soooooo slow
could shave off a couple frames on this is all I'm sayin
So basically, Zampa was the Matt Turk of this thing huh?
Storytelling in this video is fabulous, thanks!
Vid would’ve been better without the whole bribing part. Didn’t contribute to the plot
17:19 what’s the theoretical robot simulated total time with all runs?
the total TAS time is 2:39.88, which has a rich history of its own. Here's a full playlist of all the runs

@@MegaQwertification wait aren’t you one of the dudes who has a record??! And thanks!
@@God-cm5xs yea haha. i'm just peering over the comments section while i have time to answer questions :)
@@MegaQwertification haha that’s great. I recently got ahold of a wii and Melee and have two GameCube controllers. Introduced my little brother to the game. That and Super Monkey Ball. He loves it. I’m definitely gonna run some target practice soon been years!
