@@sonicsucks20 The fact that he cares? Shadow after 06 became your one dimensional edge lord who fought Sonic and talked down on him for no reason and didn't care about anyone. Shadow here cares enough about Amy's birthday to know what her favourite band is and buy her tickets.
This game really shows that you can have a light and more goofy story in a Sonic game as long as the characters are all acting like themselves. Shadow was one of the best parts of this game, and so was your character constantly having the option to check the garbage cans for clues.
Personally, my favorite part of The Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog is that our viewpoint character is....just a normal person by Sonic's world's standards. They can't unnaturally fly for their species, can't tear through steel walls with their bare hands, or shoot fire. And I like the perspective of it that makes the cast also feel a little special. Like, there's only one Vector the Crocodile, despite him not having some weird quirk.
This game made me really long for even more interactions between characters who don’t often talk to each other. I wish I could’ve seen Vector, Knuckles and Shadow duking it out over Super Monkey Ball, or just how quickly Blaze and Rouge got along despite being almost opposite people
The idea that Shadow stopped worrying about his present for Amy for a few minutes just because he found something competitive and couldn't resist proving himself is just wonderful. He's still the same Shadow that yelled "I'm the coolest" unironically whenever he managed to get a hit in on Sonic.
This game was such a breath of fresh air, and they managed to characterize these characters even better than Frontiers in my opinion. I hope this team gets to do even more stuff in the future.
Sega take notes because this game within 2-4 hours gave us interactions that was honestly fun to see and Sonic didn't need to hog the spotlight to do it. P.S tails is adorable and he's my favorite character
It was such a pleasant surprise. And who would've thought that characterization would be spot on? Like you said, It didn't really matter the plot twist, I really enjoyed the interactions they had with each other.
This is something I really wanna see in the Story Mode for the next Mario and Sonic! That, and the regularisation of Toad, Rouge, Espio and Rosalina so they're playable in all events.

I would love to see more spin off games that arent the typical sonic games but just lets say a game where you help to run a bakery with amy or cream and cheese. I think obviously we should focus on improving on the main sonic games but every once in a while we can have a simple and charming game. Trying out different game styles. I think that would be cool
Loved it and I mean to death It’s a fine example as to why characters matter. You can’t always rely on the main protagonist because a main character is only as good as the characters that surround them
I was delighted to know this game was real, and enjoyed every moment. Getting to hang with my favorite character (Tails) and solve a mystery was so fun. Even the Think Stages were a great time.
Yes! Finally! Somebody is talking about this game. The writing and characterization in this game was AMAZING, truly. With this and Sonic Frontiers, the future of sonic is looking great! Ong tho is game is slept on, it so good in every way. The worldbuilding was so awesome, and the writing was genuinely funny. I liked how the characters were actually kinda a holes. It was funny. Oh and I LOVED the art!
Characterization is one of the strong points of visual novels, and I'm SO glad they were allowed to do this one. Most Sonic games have to focus on the gameplay loop, and that's fine, but this one is ALL story, and thus manages to dig into the characters and represent them as PEOPLE rather than set pieces. In a way, it makes a really good companion to Frontiers-- which is all about Sonic's friends from Sonic's view. This is about his friends from an outsider's view. Two sides.
As someone who has played very little Sonic but has learned to love these characters thanks to the IDW comics and video essays on them (primarily ThePJShow’s content), The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog was an absolute blast from start to finish mainly thanks to how it absolutely nailed every single character. Obviously the gameplay was fun too, but the writing was absolutely top notch. Dare I say that from my limited knowledge of Sonic games, this game probably had my favorite writing of any Sonic game since Black Knight.
I only realized it with your video but, yeah actually this game is perfect for new comers in the series, it perfectly introduces the characters to the audience that didn’t know them well enough or got misleaded by the latest games (like for Shadow for example). I had huge IDW vibes while playing it but the situation they are in is just perfect to make them interact and show the player what makes these characters so appealing, anyway thank you for this video as it brings me even more hope for the future and it was a great time to see you point out how well they are portrayed in this game!
I think my favorite thing about this, was that while it was funny. When it had to be serious. It let itself be just that. When the cast is accusing Espio of potentially severely hurting Sonic. Vector drops the Butcher Act when he's defending him. While Espio doesn't sling a poem. It's amazing because these were two most hammy characters in the game, but when it become apparent someone was actually hurt. It's dropped, but doesn't feel out of place. The moment things get better. They joke around again. Also Espio being a petty prick and Vector beating him in a game. I hope we get a Knuckles Chaotix spiritual successor soon. Cause now I just want Knuckles dealing with these clowns.
Espio speed read a book just to spoil the ending for knuckles. Little details like that turn characters into people and make a world feel alive. Like, I was surprised to learn Knuckles reads novels and never pictured Espio as a troll. It's important because it shows they have lives off camera as well. All in one line of dialog.
I absolutely feel Smy was characterized WAY better in this game than she has since Unleashed. I know we disagree on whether trying to turn her into her Boom version being good or not, (i greatly dislike it) but I absolutely like how she leans more to how she was in things like Heroes, Unleashed, Advance and the Adventure games. Upbeat, fun-loving and bubbly but still a tough, headstrong cookie!
What about Eggman? Even though he had little presence and arguably the “Lost World” syndrome of the final boss being there because “he always was”, it’s the little details that make him enjoyable for small moments like him saying in a choice that he will turn everyone into robots even though he “didn’t do that for a long time (referencing the term “roboticization” from the early Sonic media)” or transport them to the future like in CD or 2006, him mentioning that Sage could use some new toys to play with in the former choice, and both Sage and Metal Sonic with shirts that say LET’S GO DAD and the latter waving a flag, with all three wearing party hats.
I was a casual sonic fan til the adventure games, when i got SUPER into it, but fell out completely during the dark age. Ive never heard that sonic was improving very much outside of a few exceptions like sonic gens in 2011, so i was confident i left the fandom at a good time and could remember him how he was. Despite sonic being totally off my radar for over 10yrs, shadow gens somehow ended up my radar last yr, and i was stoked to play it bc shadow was my favorite character. When i finally got my hands on it, it felt so right. It felt like the perfect evolution of what the adventure games tried to do, and it was SO fun. I found out about Murder of Sonic when playing thru shadow gens, and just finished it yesterday. Tears in my eyes, it was so so good. So heartfelt, so genuine, so much of the characters i loved in my childhood. I picked a helluva time to come back! ❤
I firmly believe that with the two movies, IDW, Frontiers, and now this game... They all seem to tell us that this "new age" of Sonic is actually onto something here. The extended cast of characters and lore expansion in Sonic is getting importance once again. Unlike the past 10-15 years, there hasn't been any overwhelming hate, ire, or scorn shamelessly shoved down our throats. These games being unanimously positively received, the execution of these being solid to grand in areas, and things that have been shamelessly lambasted for years being brought back, refined, and ACTUALLY RESPECTED?! This brings tears to my eyes. I--and pretty much a lot of people--needed this feeling for the series for a long time. Let's keep this train of actual respect and positivity for Sonic going, and not have it derail itself!
I really liked it, with Amy and Shadow being my favorites in this cast. (I also like the shout out to Gamma) While its more apparent in the IDW comics I find two of Sonic's traits relatable, his headstrongness and his desire/respect for freedom. (despite the latter being a thorny matter for other people)
I really hope SEGA took notes on how much people loved seeing the extended cast and how actually involved they were. They really should abandon the “ Sonic’s friends are annoying” mantra that they had for a while and utilize these characters more in upcoming games. This game is definitive proof that it works!
Espio really got his time to shine here. It gives me hope we'll see Silver get the same treatment at some point, and Sonic Team's already bringing back my favourite villain in the franchise; Fang. This could spell a renaissance for the games.
Vector & Espio were actually in other mainline games (Shadow, Generations & Forces alongside Charmy). They also do appear in spin-off games like Rivals 2, the Olympics, , the Boom show, Free Riders & TSR (the last three only featuring Vector).

I had a similar experience recently when I watched the Boom TV series and a fan voiceover of the IDW comics. It really reminded me that I love these characters. I think the Sonic franchise is more enjoyable when the writers remember that they don't just have Sonic, but a whole cast of very likeable characters that they can use to tell engaging stories. It was so much fun seeing them all interact in a more "casual" setting for this game.

I'm not sure what specifically I'd want out of another one of these, but I would 100% be down for more. Especially if they still intend to have a limited "core cast" in the main game (which I wouldn't know, of course), side games like these would show that they haven't forgotten about the extended cast. On second thought, I do have one specific thing: if they did one of these side games as a Chao garden, they could satisfy Chao fans and probably get people to stop asking whether every single main Sonic game would have one or not. Iizuka said in an interview that "CHAO GARDEN?!" is the most commonly asked question for every game, so a side game would be an effective compromise.
I really love the fact that despite the many years since then, Sega hasn’t forgotten that Amy did play a big role in Shadow’s character in SA2, reminding him of Maria and her true feelings through the very same words she spoke. The idea of Shadow having a soft spot for Amy because of that is just so adorable. Though I got to admit, even I am impressed with how far it was taken. Biting the bullet to go to a boy band concert with her to make her happy as a birthday gift?! That’s a level of vulnerability I don’t think anyone has ever thought Shadow was capable of! Regardless of him being a confirmed Swiftie, which funnily enough is something he has in common with Amy. If she’s able to bring this much out of him, and just the minimal interactions we’ve had between them in the past two decades, then I can’t help but pray that Sega gives us more! And I already wanted that for a long time now. 😊
I loved the characterization of the game. The outfits, the theme, the story I loved everything. Also the Dream Gear mini game is a damn nightmare. I am just now learning there's an easy mode.
This is the closest in character, art, and overall feel that the games have come to the IDW comics, and I love that. While we're wishing for characters in a hypothetical sequel, throw Tangle and Whisper in there too. But while the writing with regard to characterization is superb... I also can't help but comment on just how good the art is, and how much characterization we get out of it, too.
The Chaotix, recently, have also appeared in Forces but, lets be honest, its *Forces.* Does it really count? I am SOO glad they've returned for this game ^^ it's proven that they can be utilized correctly! (Its the same with everyone else!! Its a great breath of fresh air)
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog was the breath of fresh air I didn't know I needed. While I had binged the IDW comics up to Scrapnik Island, and didn't get to really miss everybody for a while, it was still a wonderful experience to see so many of these guys at their best.
I still don't like the fact Cream isn't there, she is always stated to be Amy's best friend, but somehow isn't attending her birthday? Not even a reference to say she got one but couldn't show up. I also don't fully by the too young excuse, for certain things I can see it making sense or being within Creams nature. Like war, I don't believe Cream would enjoy war or do anything like that. But a fake murder mystery? That seems a bit much to exclude her. Cream would get her hands dirty if it meant helping her friends, if it was something she had the capability of handling. My rant aside, this game really does all of the characters well, even Amy. It's nice to see Amy have an actual character that isn't just there for the sake of changing due to complaining. Especially her true crime podcast line
I think her absence is probably more down to having too many characters to do them all justice. With the amount of care an attention given to this game I am actually surprised she wasn’t really referenced though.

They could have easily thrown in a line like Vanilla thinking a train ride would be dangerous for her, or the concepts of the murder mystery may be too much for her (Despite everything she has done in the games) But all and all, it was an awesome game. I'd Honestly be just as surprised why Charmy was not there when Vector and Espio was.
I loved everything about this game. I love that it was free, I loved that it could be played on Mac (the only computer I have), and I love the characters immensely. My favorite bit was, funny enough, between my character and Tails the final time I checked the trash bin (after checking every trash bin in the game), and the comedy that ensued. The coolest moment though, of course, was Sonic's speech near the start of the last stage. I love how the characters were protrayed, especially Amy and Sonic, and I reeeeeeaaaaaly hope they make another game like this. They even created new memorable characters that we've never seen before (the Conductor, the Train, and our character)! These characters and how they are portrayed is everything I could've asked for in a Sonic game. By far the best Sonic game I've played (disregarding actual gameplay mechanics) in a while. 💙
This was a really good video, subscribed! As for the game, I couldn’t agree more. I’ve always been a sucker for the characters above all else in this franchise, so seeing a game with this many well written interactions is such a treat, let alone for free! It was so cool of the team to make this a real game, rather than a gag trailer, and I hope it opens up more possibilities in the future! Whether that be more games in this style, or more character focus in general.

@@juanca2567 As you said, he was only in it for a moment. Meaning there wasn’t much about his character to evaluate. I loved all the little references like the ones you mentioned, but pointing them out isn’t exactly an analysis of his character. Plus, the point of the video was to highlight Sonic’s friends. I wish Blaze had more time to be herself, rather than going so deep into the role play, she's also unrecognizable. As for scenarios I want... Imagine some characters having jobs. Sonic would be a travel streamer, wandering the world at Mach 1 while wearing a go pro, despite the fact said go pro's frame rate can't match sonic speeds at all. Knuckles would just aim an internet connected camera at the sky and call it a Cloudwatching Stream. He'd consider using it as a security camera for the Master Emerald, but that'd mean revealing the M.E.'s existence to the wider world. I imagine Tails already owns a few patents, and Amy could be a wandering head of a charity organization like A Charitable Earth. What else... I'd like to see a story with Amy and Metal Sonic as the focus characters, Sonic himself completely absent. Inspired by an IDW story, I want to see Espio attempt to shove a VERY confused Silver in a therapist's office. All that time traveling and changing history for the greater good has given the poor boy anxiety. Maybe a Wind Waker-like budget game focusing on Blaze, Tangle and Whisper exploring the Sol Dimension. Or a Silver and Tails game where the kid genius wants to see all the future tech in Silver's good future, and is unexpectedly disappointed. Or, an Eggman puzzle game trying to resolve all the inconsistencies in the game canon and their connection to the Chaos Emeralds (headcanon hint; there's a hint in the name).
I loved this game to death. The art, the outfits, the characters, the writing etc it was all so fun. Csnt realy say i have a favourit character in this but if i had to pick id say shadow. This is another push away from his edgelord ripoff and more towards how he used to be. I like how he knew amys favourit band and wanted to gift her tickets and i loved that he playd games with vector and knuckles. I hope we get more of this, i realy believe seeing these characters interact in a more day to day/lighthearted setting realy helps them in the ling run
I've always wanted a full blown Chaotix Detective game with Point & Click Adventure and Platforming gameplay elements. This only solidified it more for me. Characterizations were brilliant as you said. I just felt it was odd Charmy and Silver were missing from it; but I guess it was pacing and character balance. The references were cool though. Would definitely love to see more similar games focusing on the wider cast like the escape room hint; or even ones focusing solely on certain character dynamics like a Ocean's 11 style heist with Team Dark and (officially creating) the Silver Blaze Marine trio lol - with no appearance from Sonic at all, putting the full day saving actions on the rest of the cast.
my one and only complaint with this game is that during the final Think rush you don't get to have the characters running along with sonic as he picks each of them up. other than that no notes
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog was the first sonic game I played, knew next to nothing about the series or the characters (hey its a free game and tumblr was raving) but loved them all so much by the end. I've started playing some of the main games now and I'm definitely missing some of the character moments they had here
It’s great to hear this game actually had the intended effect of bringing in new players to the series. If you’re looking for older games with a bigger focus on the characters, I’d recommend Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2.
This was my the first Sonic game that I wanted and played since Sonic Colors. I absolutely enjoyed it. I love the lines and how the characters were depicted.
this game brought me back to sonic. i wasnt a big fan since i watched 1st season of sonic x and boom and played a few games like unleashed (on java). this game caught my eye since i really like ace attorney-like games and what can i say? i really love this game.
The Blaze and Rouge interaction reminds me of something from the Mario & Sonic series. In the Sochi and Wii U Rio games, certain characters would have special animations if the won a gold medal together. While it felt like some were missing, most of the Mario and Sonic pairs made sense. But what character did Rouge get a special animation with? Shadow? Knuckles? Nope, Blaze I always found that animation to be the odd one out since they've never really interacted. In fact, some compilation didnt even have the pairing because nobody tried them out. This game managed to show how the two could have a fun dynamic together, and made the Rio animation pay off in the end
I for one would like to see them make spinoff games where you play as characters other than Sonic. While there will always be an audience for that kind of game, Sonic is just one of many characters that fans of this series adore. They could make a game similar to Star Fox where you play as Tails in the Tornado. Both Knuckles and Amy would be fitting for a beat-em-up style of gameplay. I’d love to see Blaze get a solo game so we can learn more about her and her dimension. Or how about a stealth game starring Rouge and/or Espio? Speaking of Espio, any game with the Chaotix, let alone (dare I dream?) a game where you’d actually solve mysteries as the Chaotix would be amazing to me. This series has the potential for so much more than just a single kind of game, and I would love to see them use these characters to experiment with other genres.

i loved this game!! it was so much fun and as soon as i saw the trailer i downloaded it and proceeded to spend a good chunk of that night playing it akdjfk it was so much fun and all the characters were so good and it was just a blast! one of my favorite sonic games now i think bc it was just SO good

Extended media often does the extended cast well. (IDW, Movies) But as far as the games are concerned, we’ll written characters are a much newer thing. I’ll cover prime too at some stage though!

I don't think Sonic is the type to leave his wallet or freeload. I'm betting that custom cake he got for Amy was his gift to her. Something like that would've had to be made in advance. Also, they would've needed a picture of her, too.
Very disappointed you didn’t analyze Eggman. Or the still at the end that shows Sage and Metal wearing “Let’s Go Dad!” T-Shirts. XD Also, I feel the train and conductor were great characters as well. I felt sorry for the train. But also, if a Flicky has been running an entire train for over 30 years, perhaps they are a better power source than anyone would ethically like to admit to.
Eggman was well written but besides that there was very little to go on for me to talk about. Sage and Metal’s cameo made me laugh more than it ever should have but again, not much for me to analyse. Would have loved to include Eggman had he appeared more though!

This game was the very first Sonic game I’ve ever played! I knew about the main characters and the animated shows but I really enjoyed how this game introduces players both old and new to the characters of this game and when I first played, I really enjoyed how unique this game is compared to others I’ve heard about before! The art and story is all so catching and lovely!! I’m glad to have this game be the first sonic game I’ve got to play! :)
Cream, Silver and Omega would have been nice to see, but I also think they would risk doing the same thing as Forces. Including too many characters to give any of them a proper purpose. Maybe in the next game! The mentioned an Escape room…😁

Sonic has had VN stuff in his ACTUAL GAMES by ST for a long time so this is a little more huge than I feel many realize(& IT IS FREE). I do have issues wit how some of the characters R written. Ofc that mainly involves shadow, his section had parts that jus felt unnecessarily forced. He says he's bad wit computers but can meddle wit Omegas' systems in 06(he even hacked eggmans' own computer in his own game granted this was via karate chop for some fuckin reason lol). Also R u reaaaally gonna tell me dude was worried bout his SOCIAL status? It would've been better if he was jus a straight up tsundere lol. I like that they remember Blaze & Cream R supposed to be a pair but then why isn't Cream/cheese & Vanilla not here? Charmy?(I actually like that silver isn't here tho lol) It feels like they wanted to take advantage of this bein a stupid April fools thing but didn't wanna go all the way but they also didn't make this make sense within the main canon so it's in a weird limbo where it jus isn't as much as it could've been on either side. I have more but regardless this was a fun & welcome surprise & to tell the truth here, this is also my 1st VN ever completely blind too & it was a sonic game lol. The most elaborate April Fools ever🤡 Havin these little surprise releases of non-canon stupid stuff by fans but still officially under SEGA can help not only tide regular fans over till the big ST stuff but also bring more attention to others on the outside basically bringin more good-will to the IP as a whole so ye more of this pls.

Agreed. Removing the Sonic filter and allowing us to see this heroes as a “Normie” was a nice change. Elevates everyone and let’s them be themselves.
Vector is also strong as hell, that's his quirk.

This game made me really long for even more interactions between characters who don’t often talk to each other. I wish I could’ve seen Vector, Knuckles and Shadow duking it out over Super Monkey Ball, or just how quickly Blaze and Rouge got along despite being almost opposite people
The idea that Shadow stopped worrying about his present for Amy for a few minutes just because he found something competitive and couldn't resist proving himself is just wonderful. He's still the same Shadow that yelled "I'm the coolest" unironically whenever he managed to get a hit in on Sonic.
This game was such a breath of fresh air, and they managed to characterize these characters even better than Frontiers in my opinion. I hope this team gets to do even more stuff in the future.
The team did a fantastic job! I would be great get to see them do something again. The success of this game makes that likely I think.
Yeah, I'd love to see a continuation of the mystery style for Sonic a lot. Possibly that could be a hook used for a Chaotix game?
Sega take notes because this game within 2-4 hours gave us interactions that was honestly fun to see and Sonic didn't need to hog the spotlight to do it.

I would love to see more spin off games that arent the typical sonic games but just lets say a game where you help to run a bakery with amy or cream and cheese. I think obviously we should focus on improving on the main sonic games but every once in a while we can have a simple and charming game. Trying out different game styles. I think that would be cool

I was delighted to know this game was real, and enjoyed every moment. Getting to hang with my favorite character (Tails) and solve a mystery was so fun. Even the Think Stages were a great time.

Ong tho is game is slept on, it so good in every way. The worldbuilding was so awesome, and the writing was genuinely funny. I liked how the characters were actually kinda a holes. It was funny.

Characterization is one of the strong points of visual novels, and I'm SO glad they were allowed to do this one. Most Sonic games have to focus on the gameplay loop, and that's fine, but this one is ALL story, and thus manages to dig into the characters and represent them as PEOPLE rather than set pieces. In a way, it makes a really good companion to Frontiers-- which is all about Sonic's friends from Sonic's view. This is about his friends from an outsider's view. Two sides.
As someone who has played very little Sonic but has learned to love these characters thanks to the IDW comics and video essays on them (primarily ThePJShow’s content), The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog was an absolute blast from start to finish mainly thanks to how it absolutely nailed every single character. Obviously the gameplay was fun too, but the writing was absolutely top notch. Dare I say that from my limited knowledge of Sonic games, this game probably had my favorite writing of any Sonic game since Black Knight.
I only realized it with your video but, yeah actually this game is perfect for new comers in the series, it perfectly introduces the characters to the audience that didn’t know them well enough or got misleaded by the latest games (like for Shadow for example). I had huge IDW vibes while playing it but the situation they are in is just perfect to make them interact and show the player what makes these characters so appealing, anyway thank you for this video as it brings me even more hope for the future and it was a great time to see you point out how well they are portrayed in this game!
I think my favorite thing about this, was that while it was funny. When it had to be serious. It let itself be just that. When the cast is accusing Espio of potentially severely hurting Sonic. Vector drops the Butcher Act when he's defending him. While Espio doesn't sling a poem. It's amazing because these were two most hammy characters in the game, but when it become apparent someone was actually hurt. It's dropped, but doesn't feel out of place. The moment things get better. They joke around again. Also Espio being a petty prick and Vector beating him in a game. I hope we get a Knuckles Chaotix spiritual successor soon. Cause now I just want Knuckles dealing with these clowns.
Espio speed read a book just to spoil the ending for knuckles. Little details like that turn characters into people and make a world feel alive. Like, I was surprised to learn Knuckles reads novels and never pictured Espio as a troll. It's important because it shows they have lives off camera as well. All in one line of dialog.
The knuckles blushing sprite was everything 🥰🥰love how he was depicted in this game he was so cute !!
I absolutely feel Smy was characterized WAY better in this game than she has since Unleashed.
I know we disagree on whether trying to turn her into her Boom version being good or not, (i greatly dislike it) but I absolutely like how she leans more to how she was in things like Heroes, Unleashed, Advance and the Adventure games.
Upbeat, fun-loving and bubbly but still a tough, headstrong cookie!
What about Eggman? Even though he had little presence and arguably the “Lost World” syndrome of the final boss being there because “he always was”, it’s the little details that make him enjoyable for small moments like him saying in a choice that he will turn everyone into robots even though he “didn’t do that for a long time (referencing the term “roboticization” from the early Sonic media)” or transport them to the future like in CD or 2006, him mentioning that Sage could use some new toys to play with in the former choice, and both Sage and Metal Sonic with shirts that say LET’S GO DAD and the latter waving a flag, with all three wearing party hats.
I was a casual sonic fan til the adventure games, when i got SUPER into it, but fell out completely during the dark age. Ive never heard that sonic was improving very much outside of a few exceptions like sonic gens in 2011, so i was confident i left the fandom at a good time and could remember him how he was.
Despite sonic being totally off my radar for over 10yrs, shadow gens somehow ended up my radar last yr, and i was stoked to play it bc shadow was my favorite character. When i finally got my hands on it, it felt so right. It felt like the perfect evolution of what the adventure games tried to do, and it was SO fun. I found out about Murder of Sonic when playing thru shadow gens, and just finished it yesterday. Tears in my eyes, it was so so good. So heartfelt, so genuine, so much of the characters i loved in my childhood. I picked a helluva time to come back! ❤

They all seem to tell us that this "new age" of Sonic is actually onto something here.
The extended cast of characters and lore expansion in Sonic is getting importance once again.
Unlike the past 10-15 years, there hasn't been any overwhelming hate, ire, or scorn shamelessly shoved down our throats. These games being unanimously positively received, the execution of these being solid to grand in areas, and things that have been shamelessly lambasted for years being brought back, refined, and ACTUALLY RESPECTED?!
This brings tears to my eyes. I--and pretty much a lot of people--needed this feeling for the series for a long time. Let's keep this train of actual respect and positivity for Sonic going, and not have it derail itself!
I really liked it, with Amy and Shadow being my favorites in this cast. (I also like the shout out to Gamma) While its more apparent in the IDW comics I find two of Sonic's traits relatable, his headstrongness and his desire/respect for freedom. (despite the latter being a thorny matter for other people)
I really hope SEGA took notes on how much people loved seeing the extended cast and how actually involved they were. They really should abandon the “ Sonic’s friends are annoying” mantra that they had for a while and utilize these characters more in upcoming games. This game is definitive proof that it works!
Id love some more like this. They really showed just how much mileage this series can get just with its characterization
Espio really got his time to shine here. It gives me hope we'll see Silver get the same treatment at some point, and Sonic Team's already bringing back my favourite villain in the franchise; Fang. This could spell a renaissance for the games.
Vector & Espio were actually in other mainline games (Shadow, Generations & Forces alongside Charmy). They also do appear in spin-off games like Rivals 2, the Olympics, , the Boom show, Free Riders & TSR (the last three only featuring Vector).

I had a similar experience recently when I watched the Boom TV series and a fan voiceover of the IDW comics. It really reminded me that I love these characters. I think the Sonic franchise is more enjoyable when the writers remember that they don't just have Sonic, but a whole cast of very likeable characters that they can use to tell engaging stories. It was so much fun seeing them all interact in a more "casual" setting for this game.
I love to see other game characters get their own spin offs.

I'm not sure what specifically I'd want out of another one of these, but I would 100% be down for more. Especially if they still intend to have a limited "core cast" in the main game (which I wouldn't know, of course), side games like these would show that they haven't forgotten about the extended cast.
On second thought, I do have one specific thing: if they did one of these side games as a Chao garden, they could satisfy Chao fans and probably get people to stop asking whether every single main Sonic game would have one or not. Iizuka said in an interview that "CHAO GARDEN?!" is the most commonly asked question for every game, so a side game would be an effective compromise.
100% need a Chao Garden game!
I really love the fact that despite the many years since then, Sega hasn’t forgotten that Amy did play a big role in Shadow’s character in SA2, reminding him of Maria and her true feelings through the very same words she spoke. The idea of Shadow having a soft spot for Amy because of that is just so adorable. Though I got to admit, even I am impressed with how far it was taken. Biting the bullet to go to a boy band concert with her to make her happy as a birthday gift?! That’s a level of vulnerability I don’t think anyone has ever thought Shadow was capable of! Regardless of him being a confirmed Swiftie, which funnily enough is something he has in common with Amy. If she’s able to bring this much out of him, and just the minimal interactions we’ve had between them in the past two decades, then I can’t help but pray that Sega gives us more! And I already wanted that for a long time now. 😊
I loved the characterization of the game. The outfits, the theme, the story I loved everything. Also the Dream Gear mini game is a damn nightmare. I am just now learning there's an easy mode.

This is the closest in character, art, and overall feel that the games have come to the IDW comics, and I love that. While we're wishing for characters in a hypothetical sequel, throw Tangle and Whisper in there too.
But while the writing with regard to characterization is superb... I also can't help but comment on just how good the art is, and how much characterization we get out of it, too.
The Chaotix, recently, have also appeared in Forces but, lets be honest, its *Forces.* Does it really count?

The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog was the breath of fresh air I didn't know I needed. While I had binged the IDW comics up to Scrapnik Island, and didn't get to really miss everybody for a while, it was still a wonderful experience to see so many of these guys at their best.
I still don't like the fact Cream isn't there, she is always stated to be Amy's best friend, but somehow isn't attending her birthday? Not even a reference to say she got one but couldn't show up. I also don't fully by the too young excuse, for certain things I can see it making sense or being within Creams nature. Like war, I don't believe Cream would enjoy war or do anything like that.
But a fake murder mystery? That seems a bit much to exclude her. Cream would get her hands dirty if it meant helping her friends, if it was something she had the capability of handling.
My rant aside, this game really does all of the characters well, even Amy. It's nice to see Amy have an actual character that isn't just there for the sake of changing due to complaining. Especially her true crime podcast line
I think her absence is probably more down to having too many characters to do them all justice. With the amount of care an attention given to this game I am actually surprised she wasn’t really referenced though.

They could have easily thrown in a line like Vanilla thinking a train ride would be dangerous for her, or the concepts of the murder mystery may be too much for her (Despite everything she has done in the games) But all and all, it was an awesome game. I'd Honestly be just as surprised why Charmy was not there when Vector and Espio was.

I loved everything about this game. I love that it was free, I loved that it could be played on Mac (the only computer I have), and I love the characters immensely. My favorite bit was, funny enough, between my character and Tails the final time I checked the trash bin (after checking every trash bin in the game), and the comedy that ensued. The coolest moment though, of course, was Sonic's speech near the start of the last stage. I love how the characters were protrayed, especially Amy and Sonic, and I reeeeeeaaaaaly hope they make another game like this. They even created new memorable characters that we've never seen before (the Conductor, the Train, and our character)! These characters and how they are portrayed is everything I could've asked for in a Sonic game. By far the best Sonic game I've played (disregarding actual gameplay mechanics) in a while. 💙

I’ve always been a sucker for the characters above all else in this franchise, so seeing a game with this many well written interactions is such a treat, let alone for free! It was so cool of the team to make this a real game, rather than a gag trailer, and I hope it opens up more possibilities in the future! @@juanca2567 As you said, he was only in it for a moment. Meaning there wasn’t much about his character to evaluate. I loved all the little references like the ones you mentioned, but pointing them out isn’t exactly an analysis of his character. Plus, the point of the video was to highlight Sonic’s friends. I wish Blaze had more time to be herself, rather than going so deep into the role play, she's also unrecognizable.
As for scenarios I want... Imagine some characters having jobs. Sonic would be a travel streamer, wandering the world at Mach 1 while wearing a go pro, despite the fact said go pro's frame rate can't match sonic speeds at all. Knuckles would just aim an internet connected camera at the sky and call it a Cloudwatching Stream. He'd consider using it as a security camera for the Master Emerald, but that'd mean revealing the M.E.'s existence to the wider world. I imagine Tails already owns a few patents, and Amy could be a wandering head of a charity organization like A Charitable Earth.
What else... I'd like to see a story with Amy and Metal Sonic as the focus characters, Sonic himself completely absent.
Inspired by an IDW story, I want to see Espio attempt to shove a VERY confused Silver in a therapist's office. All that time traveling and changing history for the greater good has given the poor boy anxiety.
Maybe a Wind Waker-like budget game focusing on Blaze, Tangle and Whisper exploring the Sol Dimension. Or a Silver and Tails game where the kid genius wants to see all the future tech in Silver's good future, and is unexpectedly disappointed. Or, an Eggman puzzle game trying to resolve all the inconsistencies in the game canon and their connection to the Chaos Emeralds (headcanon hint; there's a hint in the name).
Murder of Sonic is the future of the series the next mainline game will be a massive VN with open zone elements

I loved this game to death. The art, the outfits, the characters, the writing etc it was all so fun.
Csnt realy say i have a favourit character in this but if i had to pick id say shadow. This is another push away from his edgelord ripoff and more towards how he used to be. I like how he knew amys favourit band and wanted to gift her tickets and i loved that he playd games with vector and knuckles.
I hope we get more of this, i realy believe seeing these characters interact in a more day to day/lighthearted setting realy helps them in the ling run
I've always wanted a full blown Chaotix Detective game with Point & Click Adventure and Platforming gameplay elements. This only solidified it more for me.
Characterizations were brilliant as you said. I just felt it was odd Charmy and Silver were missing from it; but I guess it was pacing and character balance. The references were cool though.
Would definitely love to see more similar games focusing on the wider cast like the escape room hint; or even ones focusing solely on certain character dynamics like a Ocean's 11 style heist with Team Dark and (officially creating) the Silver Blaze Marine trio lol - with no appearance from Sonic at all, putting the full day saving actions on the rest of the cast.
my one and only complaint with this game is that during the final Think rush you don't get to have the characters running along with sonic as he picks each of them up. other than that no notes
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog was the first sonic game I played, knew next to nothing about the series or the characters (hey its a free game and tumblr was raving) but loved them all so much by the end. I've started playing some of the main games now and I'm definitely missing some of the character moments they had here
It’s great to hear this game actually had the intended effect of bringing in new players to the series. If you’re looking for older games with a bigger focus on the characters, I’d recommend Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2.
This was my the first Sonic game that I wanted and played since Sonic Colors. I absolutely enjoyed it. I love the lines and how the characters were depicted.

this game brought me back to sonic. i wasnt a big fan since i watched 1st season of sonic x and boom and played a few games like unleashed (on java). this game caught my eye since i really like ace attorney-like games and what can i say? i really love this game.
Probably won't happen but I kinda wish the character we play as in this game appears again in some form.

Picked the characters I missed most personally my guy. Have no objections at all to cream and charmy. They’ve been missing far too long as well!
The Blaze and Rouge interaction reminds me of something from the Mario & Sonic series.
In the Sochi and Wii U Rio games, certain characters would have special animations if the won a gold medal together.
While it felt like some were missing, most of the Mario and Sonic pairs made sense. But what character did Rouge get a special animation with? Shadow? Knuckles? Nope, Blaze
I always found that animation to be the odd one out since they've never really interacted. In fact, some compilation didnt even have the pairing because nobody tried them out. This game managed to show how the two could have a fun dynamic together, and made the Rio animation pay off in the end
I for one would like to see them make spinoff games where you play as characters other than Sonic. While there will always be an audience for that kind of game, Sonic is just one of many characters that fans of this series adore. They could make a game similar to Star Fox where you play as Tails in the Tornado. Both Knuckles and Amy would be fitting for a beat-em-up style of gameplay. I’d love to see Blaze get a solo game so we can learn more about her and her dimension. Or how about a stealth game starring Rouge and/or Espio? Speaking of Espio, any game with the Chaotix, let alone (dare I dream?) a game where you’d actually solve mysteries as the Chaotix would be amazing to me. This series has the potential for so much more than just a single kind of game, and I would love to see them use these characters to experiment with other genres.

the only complain i have is that i would have loved to see more characters as the murderer, because it gives you motivation to keep playing

Extended media often does the extended cast well. (IDW, Movies) But as far as the games are concerned, we’ll written characters are a much newer thing. I’ll cover prime too at some stage though!

Also, I feel the train and conductor were great characters as well. I felt sorry for the train. But also, if a Flicky has been running an entire train for over 30 years, perhaps they are a better power source than anyone would ethically like to admit to.
Eggman was well written but besides that there was very little to go on for me to talk about. Sage and Metal’s cameo made me laugh more than it ever should have but again, not much for me to analyse. Would have loved to include Eggman had he appeared more though!

I knew about the main characters and the animated shows but I really enjoyed how this game introduces players both old and new to the characters of this game and when I first played, I really enjoyed how unique this game is compared to others I’ve heard about before! The art and story is all so catching and lovely!! I’m glad to have this game be the first sonic game I’ve got to play! :)

Cream, Silver and Omega would have been nice to see, but I also think they would risk doing the same thing as Forces. Including too many characters to give any of them a proper purpose. Maybe in the next game! The mentioned an Escape room…😁

I can’t believe a free April Fools game has way better characterizations than the recent main Modern Sonic titles.
Sonic has had VN stuff in his ACTUAL GAMES by ST for a long time so this is a little more huge than I feel many realize(& IT IS FREE). I do have issues wit how some of the characters R written. Ofc that mainly involves shadow, his section had parts that jus felt unnecessarily forced. He says he's bad wit computers but can meddle wit Omegas' systems in 06(he even hacked eggmans' own computer in his own game granted this was via karate chop for some fuckin reason lol). Also R u reaaaally gonna tell me dude was worried bout his SOCIAL status? It would've been better if he was jus a straight up tsundere lol. I like that they remember Blaze & Cream R supposed to be a pair but then why isn't Cream/cheese & Vanilla not here? Charmy?(I actually like that silver isn't here tho lol) It feels like they wanted to take advantage of this bein a stupid April fools thing but didn't wanna go all the way but they also didn't make this make sense within the main canon so it's in a weird limbo where it jus isn't as much as it could've been on either side. I have more but regardless this was a fun & welcome surprise & to tell the truth here, this is also my 1st VN ever completely blind too & it was a sonic game lol. The most elaborate April Fools ever🤡 Havin these little surprise releases of non-canon stupid stuff by fans but still officially under SEGA can help not only tide regular fans over till the big ST stuff but also bring more attention to others on the outside basically bringin more good-will to the IP as a whole so ye more of this pls.
