The way Troy breaks down crying because he can't get the kill that he's been training for and waiting for ... And then a few months later he's back in the civilian world with that mentality. Sounds pretty dangerous.

This is an accurate portrayal of war. You go get your basic, you go get your specialization whether it be a tank commander, sniper or infantry. You're under pressure to perform your best, usually the more special you go the more pressure and shouting you get -- ain't no Special Forces without "special means of motivation". Finally you go do what you're supposed to do -- kill the enemy. And some desk jockey comes and takes it away from you. Another stress factor is the constant uncertainty, which consumes units in readiness.
This boils down to the ideal soldier understanding that in all cases possible it is best to stay away from killing. Killing anyone, "even the enemy", is mentally arduous and the more you kill, the more you become indifferent to it. Ideally you want to stress about killing, you want to feel bad but good after a one sided fight. It keeps you human. Those guys who took down Saddam, their kill count per person is, it has to be, less than 10 and they're the best of the best. The moment you're in command and you have a soldier that breaks down after they miss their chance to get a notch on their belt, you send them home.
This is an accurate portrayal of a person in constant stress denied their chance to fulfill their mission in any meaningful way. He's long gone and deserves a ticket home.

BEST scene. The acting of his breakdown was PHE-NOMENAL. He was a criminal and he had joined the marines to get the kill out of his system and this was his last chance as he was not to be allowed back in the marines again, and the only shot he will ever get to make is his own.
The portrayal of how tragic this man’s life was to himself was beautiful. You aren’t supposed to judge here. It’s art. You view it to make you feel emotions you otherwise wouldn’t feel by yourself.
This is the kind of film you need to view vicariously, not as a critic sitting on one side of a debate or another. Doing that, you miss everything.

It’s also a testament to how the military is indeed NOT the be-all end-all to reforming a person with questionable character. It’s the reason why so many soldiers get caught up with crimes ranging from minor to heinous/felonious once they’re out in the operational field. This can be said for some police departments in the US too. The crazies slip through the cracks because MEPS wants the attrition and retention of new recruits.

He’s going to be kicked out of the corps, and he has nothing to show for it. No satisfaction, no sympathy for his situation, just the cold indifference of the world. Well, first of all bursting into a nest like that is asking to get killed. You run the risk of running into a trap or being engaged by the sniper team itself.
Secondly, they had permission of the colonel to take the shot. A lower rank coming in thinking they have the authority to conflict those orders just like that is an issue at minimum. Therefore they most likely had the right to take the shot anyway.
As for their outburst, excessively training to do one thing and then having that be pointless is not a fun feeling.

I figure that's part of the point, the soldiers were trained to be surgically efficient and capable of neutralizing entire armies with a single bullet but the powers-that-be figured it's easier and quicker (and more fun) to blunt-force the problem and wasted time and resources pointlessly. Who cares if you could feed a thousand starving children for a year or cure a hundred peoples' cancer with the money wasted in that airstrike?

I have serious reservations on how this actually unfolded in real life, assuming the book was based on real events. How does a POG barge into a sniper's position like that? Is this all dramatic effect? The security element should have warned them they had someone from staff on their way and to hold firing. This entire conversation would have been on the radio in brevity and not as described. This very well could have been the state of mind however.
