FILM DESCRIPTION:
In the late 1980s, Anthony Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) enlists as a Marine, training in boot camp under a sadistic drill instructor. Swofford undertakes a sniper course headed by Staff Sgt. Sykes (Jamie Foxx) during this time, which is shortly before the advent of the Gulf War. When the United States becomes involved, Swofford is shipped out, along with his spotter, Alan Troy (Peter Sarsgaard). Facing uncertainty each day -- about the war and home -- the soldiers try to maintain composure.

@@_--Reaper--_ Burning diesel fuel releases toxic, carcinogenic fumes, plus you're using it to burn feces. So you have an entire military camp exposed to multiple drums bellowing out cancer causing gases, bacteria and poo particles (a perfect recipe for ruining your organs and immune system). Wouldn't be surprised if more soldiers got horrendously sick or developed cancer from such a practice than those wounded from the war.

Going “internal” pretty much means you lose focus on the task/mission. You’re deep into your own miserable thoughts and overwhelmed by everything that’s going on.
The worst is when you have the look at 2:35 when your soul is truly shattered and you're trying to process the misery, only to have some f***ing officer intentionally run around and into your line of sight asking "umm, where is my salute?"
I always wonder why Swofford didn’t get extra punishment for spattered the water-saliva mixture on the table to the sergeant.
The sergeant was in a very good mood that day. How much more crap could he be given anyway? An entire divisions worth?🤣
Because he knew what his punishment would be. What else worse are they going to do to him?
it was part of swofford’s punishment

I loved this movie when I was younger, as I’ve gotten older Swofford just comes off as a petulant man child who throws a temper tantrum when he doesn’t get his way.
Thats what he was,
It's a movie. Don't read too much in to it. The real Marine Corps is not like this. This movie represents the absolute very worst of Service all lumped in to a two hour movie and most of these shenanigans would result in multiple courts-martial.

True. The US army has billions of dollars, tanks, high tech equipment . But a steel bucket in the desert is just too much.
THIS is why a majority of veterans have PTSD and Social Disorders. Most werent exposed to combat. Most were just treated like human garbage on a daily basis for years and years. The military destroys your self-worth. You just get so used to being treated like dirt, and a part of you NEVER forgives yourself for allowing it. Then you get out and realize that NO ONE ACTUALLY CARES. You're left wondering what was it all for. I was a raging alcoholic and have spent so much time in mental institutions. I saw horrible things in Afghanistan. Now I cant even keep a job. I hate most people & I'm slowly realizing that most of my "brothers" in the Marines were just trying to get through it too. Like we were living in an Abusive Orphanage. We were all just longing to be free from each other.
