  • What’s happening in this Jarhead movie clip?
    A rain of crude oil falls from the sky while they attempt to dig sleeping holes. Kruger (Lucas Black from American Gothic) panics because he has oil all over his eyes and can’t see. The others help him clean his eyes. Before they can finish to dig, Sykes (Jamie Foxx from Ray, Danjo Unchained and Dreamgirls) orders the squad to move upwind. Fowler (Evan Jones) is digging far away from the others.

We had to set an example to the rest of the world by showing that if we wanted to we could crumble their government in less than a week so they had better continue to use our money.

      @@Corkchips I actually didnt see the movie in one go, but I do know the scene. These are supposed to be STA(Surviellance and Target Acquisition)Marines I guess because I saw they had some M40a1 bolt actions.. Each grunt or "line" battalion gets a STA section in the s2 shop of about 12 active scouts that are put through an 8week division scout sniper porgram. In my first Duty station I was in 3rd MardDIv and served in 2nd Bn STA "platoon" (more like a squad) but we never used body armor, helmets or gas masks. just a modified boony cover and maybe a ghillie suit in certain specific missions. The scout team serves as a short range/real time intel for the BN intel shop to service the s3 combat ops during operations. When I was in the Gulf however, I was not part of STA so im not sure how they deployed the scout elements.
      I was in 3rd marine(Hawaii) STA and we were Pacific Rim Marines during the cold war trainded by Vietanam era SNCO's so we were more jungle oriented. Desert terraine and it's lack of natural concealment would have a significant effect on STA implementation.
      Gulf war...? My best guess is they were forward deployed and inserted by Huey or truck and conducted a short range dismounted patrol of the assault route, border crossing, oil fields and objective at the Kuwaite airport about a day or 2 ahead of the main mechanized line units. factored against typical Hollywood nonsense.

    I joined the Army in 1990. I was 17, going to basic training at Benning May-August 90' between my junior and senior year, OSUT, 11B infantry. There was a HUGE push to get troops into the military at that time, thousands of recruits at the reception station, so many in fact that it took longer than usual to get from reception to the actual training battalions. The rumors were swirling about the persian gulf right when we got there. We didn't have a single MRE the entire time we were there, all the MRE's were stockpiled in preparation for what, at the time, appeared to be a long term involvement if Saddam did in fact invade Kuwait.
    The drill sergeants were brutal in their psychological harassment of all the Soldiers in our battalion. They would form everyone up at odd hours in the middle of the night, then make announcements like "In the next 24 hours you are all shipping out to prepare for war in the Gulf", then smoke everyone for awhile, then back to bed, back up at 4:30am. I had to go back for high school so I knew this was all a ruse, at least as far as my involvement was concerned. But I can remember guys crying in the middle of the night, and whispering back and forth about heading to war.
    We all thought we were going into the snit back then, but it was over so fast that we'd barely begun preparations for deployment from my duty station following basic/AIT. This year I'll be 50, with 32 total years in the Army, still at it, albeit an upper level NCO these days. Multiple deployments, but I still remember that original one that most of us never even went on. Seemed very real and scary at the time.

    Recently (within the last 6 months of this comment IIRC), there was a study that finally concluded the cause of Gulf War Syndrome. It was originally thought to be some type of PTSD and that's the line that stuck for a long time. Turns out, when the Iraqis set the oil wells on fire and the US blew up weapon silos, it scattered a bunch of nerve gas into the atmosphere. Saddam had chemical weapons in large quantities that were destroyed by the US Air Force early on in the war. Then a bunch of infantry waded right into that shit, as you can see in this scene where they got oil in their lungs, eyes, and mouths. Since the nerve gas from now destroyed depots was in the wind, it "seeped" into the oil which came falling back down.
    It wasn't in large enough concentrations to do what nerve gas normally does and kill you, but it was in large enough quantities veterans of Desert Storm are still experiencing health problems decades later.

    • @toddf9321
      @toddf9321 Год назад +10

      US Navy veterans here, I was on a Destroyer during the first Gulf War. We posted M8/M9 Detection paper on the weather decks as a precaution for an actual chemical attack. However, the paper slowly turned colors...M8 going to from tan to green and the M9 going from green to pinkish red. The CO ordered M256 Chemical Detection Kits used and verified the presence of a nerve agent. I know this was reported to 5th Fleet. We did the DECON and went about our mission. No immediate effects, but over the years the crew has developed symptoms almost every member. Some have died early. I was lucky and had the paperwork to prove there was a connection between my symptoms and my service, so the VA granted me my compensation without much delay or fanfare. I am not sure the US Government is really trying to cover this up. Maybe they are unsure as to the cause of the symptoms...then again maybe they know well what the cause is...who really knows, huh? I just know and have known since 1991I was exposed to a nerve agent.

      @@fate.8967 Infantry roles were closed to women until relatively recently. There were no women in combat back then. And even nowadays, women "in combat" are a joke.
      The system is designed so they never actually see combat, as it is disgustingly common for them to be "injured" or pregnant before deployments. And when they actually get deployed, they are the first to run and hide at first sight of contact with the enemy (this is WELL KNOWN). And in addition to all of that, the Marine Corps conducted that famous research that they tried to bury and censor, in which they concluded that women were a liability in combat positions as they make the males work harder to compensate for their incompetence (can't march, ruck or walk long distances to save their lives). They also have a lower barrier of entry (they tried to implement a new fitness program a couple of years ago but it was cancelled after being labelled as 'misogynistic' because the females couldn't get past it) and are held to lower standards than the men. I could go on and on, but I hope you get the idea.
