I remember, after losing part of my leg and going through physical and psychological rehab, one therapist referenced "Rocky" and saying it showed that you mustn't get discouraged because you don't get better overnight - you have to keep working at it, getting better step by step and not giving up. The way "Rocky" can be a metaphor for all kinds of challenges in life is why so many different kinds of people love and are inspired by the movie.

Adrian getting in Paulie's face and yelling "I'm NOT a LOSER!" is one of my favorite movie scenes.
The great thing about the franchise is that EVERY character develops as the movies go along. Rocky, Adrian, Apollo, Mick, and even Paulie (eventually...a bit). Effort is put into every character, not just Rocky.

Funny story --- When Carl Weathers/Apollo Creed first read for the part of Apollo Creed he requested a "real actor' to do the scene with, said he could give a much better performance with someone else. He didn't know Slyvester Stallone was the writer and star of the movie, Weathers thought he was some lowly production worker... Stallone liked the mix of arrogance and back handed humor, he thought that was perfect for the role.

Backstory - the first time Adrian kisses Rocky, the reason why the actress Talia Shire was hesitant is that she had strep throat and didn't want to get Sly sick.

At LEAST 1-3. 4 was a product of its time, with all the Cold War influence, which to be fair was part of many other movies of those years. 5 doesn't stink, but it is the weakest of the originals.

5 wasn’t the best film, but it was necessary for the overall story line in the series to progress. The 6th one and the Creed series are all great in my opinion because they provide some closure to the story line and let us know what happened to everyone. Can’t wait for Creed 3.

That was the great thing about late 60's to mid 80's Hollywood movies. They took the time to set up the characters and their environments in a gritty and more realistic manner. They often didn't try to just focus on middle and upper class characters, but average people and their struggles.
This style was influenced by European new wave films from the 50's and 60's that were more slice of life stories and more natural in their depictions.

"You're gonna eat lightnin' and you're gonna crap thunder!"
Fun Fact: Sylvester Stallone was inspired to write the screenplay after seeing the Chuck Wepner-Muhammad Ali fight on March 24, 1975, at the Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio, near Cleveland. The details of that fight is beyond the scope of this comment, but the Creed-Balboa fight parallels that fight in many ways.
Making Lemonade Fact: In the film, the poster above the ring before Rocky fights Apollo shows Rocky wearing red shorts with a white stripe when he actually wears white shorts with a red stripe. This was an actual mistake made by the props department that they could not afford to rectify, so Sylvester Stallone came up with the idea for the scene where Rocky points out the mistake himself. The comment about Rocky's robe being too baggy came about the same way - the robe delivered to the set was far too baggy for Stallone, so rather than hope people wouldn't notice, the character himself simply points it out.
Guerrilla Filmmaking Fact: Most of the scenes of Rocky jogging through Philadelphia were shot with no permits, no equipment, and no extras. The shot where he runs past the moored boat for example, the crew were simply driving by the docks, and John G. Avildsen saw the boat, and thought it would make a good visual, so he had Sylvester Stallone simply get out of the van and run along the quays, while Avildsen himself filmed from the side door. A similar story concerns the famous shot of Rocky jogging through the food market. As he runs, the stall keepers and the people on the sidewalks can clearly be seen looking at him in bemusement. While this works in the context of the film to suggest they're looking at Rocky, in reality, they had no idea why this man was running up and down the road being filmed from a van. During this scene, the famous shot where the stall owner throws Rocky an orange was completely improvised by the stall owner, who had no idea that a movie was being filmed and that he would be in it.

This movie shows the importance of character development. The movie is honest in portraying these lives and the city in which they live. The heart of the movie is a glimpse into the lives of the characters, not really what comes to Rocky in terms of the chance to fight for the Championship. You guys understood that and appreciated it. So you were right when you said "Rocky won" while watching the film, he didn't win the boxing match, but won what really mattered--love.

Just so you know, there are 6 Rockys. Number 6 is called Rocky Balboa. It came 25 years after Rocky 5. There are also 2 Creed movies. They are written by somebody different, but Stallone is still in them, and they were very true, authentic, and respectful to the Rocky series. Looking forward to seeing you guys react to those as well.
Also, since you guys like to know about the stuff happening at that time of the movie. Stallone wrote this, the studio wanted somebody else to play the main character who was more the "Hollywood leading man type." They gave hime a really small budget to film the movie. That dog was Stallone's real dog. He sold it for like 500 bucks to pay for food or something, When the film was so successful he went and bought his dog back for like 5k or 50k, i don't remember.

The Manager Macky was not working with him because he didn't agree with Rocky's chosen path in life of crime (lone sharking), he didn'twantto see him hurt, in prison or killed. He knew Rocky had the talent to be so much more. So he didn't want to put time an energy into a person that was wasting his life and talent. Once Rocky was offered the title fight he wanted to protect Rocky keep him on the right path. Micky was one of the only few people whom actually had Rocky's best interests at heart ❤. Fun fact: Star Wars and Rocky were released 6 months apart. Star Wars obviously changed special effects for cinema. What gets lost with Rocky is the steady cam was invented for this movie. This is where you get the iconic stair run and boxing match shots. Cameras were too big and had to be mounted on a cart, vehicle or rail. The steady cam made them mobile. The camera man that created it is still with us today. When you watch sports and see crazy angles it is his company that makes those cameras.

Definitely read how this movie got made. He was broke, homeless, wrote it in 2 weeks. Was adked to sell it, but not star. He refused. He sold that dog, in the film, for money. Henry winkler, the Fonz, in Happy Days, heard he sold it to ABC tv. He was THE Star of ABC tv, as the fonz. He told the network, give me that script or i leave the show. The did! He gave it back to Stallone. A semi tru movie about Mohammed Ali, looking for a tune-up fight, begore his world totle rematch with Frazier. He chose chuck wepner, a decent but tomato can fighter, in the heavyweight division. And wepner damn near knocked Ali, out! Went up for several oscars! But honestly, all the Rocky movies, mostly the first 4, are about live and family and relationships.

So glad you reacted to this movie! It is one of the great movies of all time. It isn't a boxing movie, but a character movie! The characters in this movie are so well written. And Sylvester Stallone wrote the screenplay and he was nominated for best screenplay in the Oscars that year. Stallone is actually a very good actor, even though he has done a number of action movies, when you see him in movies where he has to act, he definitely carries his weight. Like First Blood, the first Rambo movie. There was much more in the movie about the various characters than being an action movie. The later Rambo movies are very much action movies with less character development. If you get a chance, definitely see the movie Cop Land from the late 1990s. He does a great job amidst all the other stars that were in that movie. He even gained weight to play the role of an older overweight policeman.
When they told him to stay down. That is a tactic in boxing I believe. You get to the count of 10 to get back up. You can get a few extra breaths staying down longer than if you stand right back up.
Neat side note. Butkus the dog was Sylvester Stallone's actual dog. He had sold him to get money as he and his family were struggling around then. He promised the family he sold the dog to that he would buy him back someday. After writing the movie Rocky, Stallone got an advance on the project and bought the dog back from the family that he had sold him to.
I look forward to more reactions! 😀

WWE back in the '80s was called WWF and it was very entertaining. They had stories that went with the matches, like in one, George the Animal Steele fell in love with Miss Elizabeth and wanted to win her from The Macho Man Randy Savage. George was sorta a wild hairy man, so you never knew what he was gonna do. Anyhow, these matches would build up over several fights until the story was resolved. And that was just three characters, you had Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, The British Bulldogs, Jake the Snake Roberts, Junkyard Dog and countless other wrestlers with their own little stories over time.
In the '80s, wrestling was very entertaining. My sister and I wondered if Kamala the Ugandan Headhunter was really a cannibal and if George the Animal Steele was really a wild man with a green tongue. Great time to be a teen.
p.s. you can find the match between George the Animal Steele and Randy Savage on YT, the interviews are comedy gold.

Thanksgiving is a big national holiday. Her brother was being terrible. Everything is closed on Thanksgiving Day. 😢Everyone stays home with relatives; a whole turkey is cooked, it takes all day.
I don’t eat meat but I like all the other traditional food: cranberry sauce, eggnog, mashed potatoes, yam, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, etc.
It’s a national holiday to celebrate the first Thanksgiving of the pilgrims who came from England to America on the Mayflower (ship). It was rough at first but finally they had a harvest and good things to eat and share that day with the “indians” - First Nations indigenous people.
That’s my elementary school education of the story anyway!

Now you have to watch Rocky 2. It's as good as the first one if not better. It will take you on an emotional rollercoaster.
    You'll need tissues.

Sylvester Stallone still has those same 2 turtles. Those turtles he has can live anywhere from 60-70 years old. He still has them in his mansion as he recently took a selfie with them.

gotta love how Rocky doesn't actually win, Sylvester Stallone tried about 1,500 times to get this film made...he wrote the script in 3.5 days and was adamant to star in it, so basically the most inspiring film almost never got made, Stallone is a special guy, he never gives up

Thanksgiving is a Native American traditional festival of thanks and blessings to the gods and the spirits of the ancestors for good crops and/or good supplies of animals to eat that the European settlers "borrowed."
The more "traditional" Thanksgiving meal was a semi-replication and adaption of what the first colonists and the Natives ate together like wild game birds such as turkeys, pheasants, or small hens.
