I was 14 when I saw this on a Thursday-midnight showing on the night before it opened! I. WAS. BLOWN. AWAY. This film stirred a passion in me I had never felt before. The rush... was incredible... and I remember immediately going home afterwards and lifting weights until the sun came up. Years later, I actually got to tell that story to Mel while working on one of his other films, and he told me that after the very first screening of this movie, his producer looked at him and said, "little boys are going in to see your movie, and they are coming out men." Most farmers were soldiers in the middle ages. During the middle ages there were no such thing as a standing army, so farmers were made to train as soldiers and when war came the call went out. Pretty much everyone was eligible to fight in the middle ages, even the rich. Part of having a lordship was that you were to be called upon to be a man at arms, so only the young and the old were not fighting.

Prima nocte (the right of nobles to be with every common woman on their wedding night) is basically a historical urban legend. It was popularized by writers who hated the aristocracy and wanted them to seem even worse than they actually were. Vaguely similar customs might have existed in ancient times in some places, but there's no evidence prima nocte ever happened anywhere in Europe during the Middle Ages. That's one of many historical inaccuracies in this movie. It's still a great movie though.

I love how people point out it is not historically accurate...Um, historically accurate movies are documentaries...lol It's accurate enough for a Hollwood "movie"... For instance the crazy Irishman, was actually from the Isle of Arran, an island between Scotland and Ireland...scariledge! lol Close enough...lol Another motive from the modern Scots community for whining about historical accuracy is that Hamish and his father, along with Argyll, that comes and gets Wallace after the death of his father, were all Campbells. Every other clan in Scotland prettyu much dislikes Campbells in modern times because 4 or 5 hundreds years after the time of this movie Clan Campbell sided with the English after being betrayed much like Wallace was betrayed. That story is complicated but involed Mary Queen of Scots and the nurder of her husband. Much of that period was motivated by religious preference, including the 8th Campbell Earl of Argyll, who became a Marquis, and was a zealous Protestant. When the Sottish king decided to convert to Catholicism (orthodoxy) he could not bare it, and neither did many in England. Anyway, the words and ideas expressed by Wallace played a role in the writers of the American Constitution. Mel Gibson made a movie about the American colonies rebelling against Englad then as well. It's called The Patriot and is an excellent movie as well...;) Thanks!

The princess of Wales was three at the time of his death and was living in France. Robert the Bruce was not at the battle of Falkirk fighting for the Scottish or English. The Irish did switch sides but came over to the Scottish side the night before the battle. The shortest distance between Scotland and Ireland is sixteen miles across the Irish sea. The English did kill Muireann because they could not get Wallace.
Scotland did win its freedom at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314 were there is a monument to Robert the Bruce and a visitor centre. you should watch the Outlaw King which is historically accurate and shows how Robert the Bruce became king.

I have watched this movie over 30 times, and cry at it everytime. This is my number 1 movie of all time, because I'm Scottish, lol. It is based very loosely on the life of William Wallace, who became high protector of Scotland and then a national icon. In Scotland if people wanted to run away and get married, they would go to a small town, on the border of Scotland called Gretna, and to this day people still go there to get married, in this movie, it's possible that's where William and Morran went to get married, even though in real life, there was no record of William Wallace being married.

In the very broad strokes it's true, but ALOT of the particulars aren't. The English didn't have Prima Nocta. The Celtics did, as was the blue war paint. The scots didn't do that, but the Celtics did. Robert the Bruce and Wallace were rivals (they both wanted to lead the Scots). The English prince and princess were children when this took place, so their story was false, although the princess did rule instead of the prince later, as depicted. No Wallace child, though. The first Wallace battle (Sterling) was fought on a bridge, and that's how they won. The massive English army wasn't worth anything, since they could only fight through the width of the bridge. Enjoy the movie for what it is, but it's not a history lesson.

The name William comes from William the Conqurer, the name Wallace means Of Wales which makes William Wallace an Anglo-Saxon nobleman an oppressor of the Scots, the name Robert De Bruce means Robert of Brussles, yet another Anglo-Saxon nobleman and another oppressor of the Scots, these people were Anglo-Saxon English rebelling against the Norman English, not an English Scottish war but rather an internal English power struggle.

The basics are true , Wallace won a great battle against the English in 1297 he got beat in a later battle in 1298 he was later betrayed by a Scotsman and taken to London to be executed by Edward I in 1305.
    Edward I died in 1307,
Robert Bruce beat the English at Banockburn in 1314 and England eventualy gave up attacking Scotland and sued for peace in 1328,
but wasn`t long before the English once again couldn`t just leave us alone.

While it is not 100% historically accurate it is based on several different people that fought for Scottish independence. Btw, the relationship with the French princess never happened in real life. She would have been 3 years old at the time.

It is a very dramatic and compelling movie. I just hope that the Loud Guys take the time to look up all the reasons why practically nothing in the movie is really quite true. Mel Gibson really does know how to dramatize events, but he is not very good at making movies that represent actual history. ✌💯😁

Don't know if anyone else said it, but to answer your confusion about "it was rumoured that for the princess to concieve, Longshanks would have to do the honors himself".......this was an insult in reference to the prince, Longshank's son lacking "the balls" as he was not considered a man. He was a homosexual as was demonstrated throughout by his apathy and somewhat contempt for his wife, his looking away her at the wedding to make eye contact with Phillip and shunning her to run to Phillip in times of distress.

Some actual historical details that differ from the film....
The French princess never met William Wallace, he was executed when she was a small child.
Wallace started his rebellion long before his wife Murron's death, that incident just drove him further, the incident happened indoors.
King Edward the Longshanks died years after Wallace's execution, not in the same event.
Before Wallace's death, the English dragged him on the ground by horse all the way to his execution.
The real battle of Stirling was on a bridge, on which Walaces forces had the English trapped. The original Stirling Bridge was replaced by the current bridge centuries ago, but interstingly, archaeologists recently found the support stones of the original bridge underwater just a short distance from the modern bridge!
Scottish kilts were not in style as men's fashion at that time, not until about a century later, or more.
English bagpipes were used instead of Scottish bagpipes, the sound of Scottish bagpipes is deeper/heavier and they felt it would be less interesting for the movie.

Most of the facts were real but over different time periods to different people. The reason the critics single this movie out and not say, "ARGO" (or a ton of others) is because Mel fell out of grace with Hollyweird. They lost their minds when Mel made "The Passion of the Christ" also.

I'm Canadian and was very much alive and paying attention during the actual events surrounding Argo. The beginning scenes of that movie, where the embassy is stormed was done so accurately, that my photographic memory kicked in. I was there with my kids and had to dig my nails into the seats because it triggered my PTSD (which I have from other life events). I remembered what I was seeing in front of me fictionalized.
What Ben Affleck got wrong was that the CIA was not spearheading anything. The Canadians did, and if they hadn't, the CIA operation made critical mistakes that would have exposed the whole thing, and the Canadians corrected it. I wish they had gotten that right, but overall, I enjoyed that movie.

Mel's head writer/producer/director guy, is a descendant of William Wallace!!😮😮😮 He also did, once we were soldiers (true story) and hacksaw Ridge (true story) the Patriot)his character based on Lighthorse Henry Lee!) he also did that movie about Jesus The Christ, about 10 years ago.

William Wallace born cirka 1270 died August 23 rd 1305. Brave Heart is a true story mostly. I share something I know of his history: William's father was more likely Alain Wallace ( not Malcolm) he was a minor knight and not a farmer. Wiliam was a teenager about 13- 15 yrs and studied to be a priest in Paisley Abbey time when English trudors killed his father and brother. William's mother was alive at that time and William went with his mother to live with his uncle from mother's side uncle was a bishop Argyle. William be came an educated man he spoke many languages forexample. The lovestory with princess Isabella is a fiction, Isabella was only 4 yrs at that time she did later marry Edward ll of England Long Shank's son Edward ll though. Edward was a homosexual. Isabella got the name SheWolf because she rose a rebell against her huspand close him in prison where he was murdered. Then William Wallace had a guard called Irish dark Steven so that part is true also as well Hamish excist. Some people think there was a warrior king in Ireland who rebell against English So THAT king could have been thE Irish dark Steven in reality. That is why in a movie Steven always talks about " HIS IRELAND." Irish dark Steven saved William Wallace's life several times. It is not known did William Wallace and Robert the Bruce ever met in person but they must have known each others . Also king Robert the Bruce carried the nickname Brave Heart and he is still called by that. You should watch the movie about Robert the Bruce too.
