The art for this video is extremely good! Merlon looks so cool at 0:10! I like how true to the original game the background is as well, with the pillars and the hearts off to the side. It also gives off the surreal feeling that Flipside has, bright and somewhat empty, while still very detailed! The art at 1:25 gives off the more homely feel Flipside has, while still showing off the surrealness I mentioned earlier. I also love how you can still see the void looming in the distance, and all the citizens of Flipside seem somewhat worried about it. It gives off the feeling of an ever-looming threat perfectly! Merlon is one of my favorite characters in the game, so I'm glad to see he got plenty of lines in this song! His lyrics were also really good in my opinion. Good job on writing lyrics that both sound good and tell you all the backstory you would need to know about the pure hearts and the void! I really liked the section where all the Flipside residents were singing together about Flipside, and also the section where all the shopkeepers are offering Mario their services, it truly did just feel like people living their everyday lives, which makes the ever-looming void in the distance ever more melancholy. I wonder how Flopside is doing?

Two weeks ago, I said I would return “tomorrow”; better late than never, though! 😅 I’m going to try to keep this comment shorter than my other comments haha 0:02 Merlon’s voice surprised me at first; I expected it to be lower pitched, but now it’s grown on me! He truly sounds like a “grandpa”, for lack of a better word right now haha; he reminds me of Disney characters like Maurice from Beauty and the Beast or the Sultan from Aladdin. I’ve always imagined that his relationship with Tippi was that of a father-daughter or grandpa-granddaughter, so it really fits!! 0:30 “Tippi! You have truly outdone yourself” This sentence is directly said in game; I’ve always adored how Merlon is so supportive to Tippi. The girl (well, pixl) really needed a helping hand after all she had been through and I'm so glad that it was Merlon the one who helped her 🥰 0:55 Did you know that the term “hero of light” is never actually used in the game? (Or at least, I’m pretty certain that it isn’t) I realized this not too long ago. The fandom has been using the term “heroes of light” since the beginning and it’s stuck across the years, but when I reread the game’s dialogue I noticed that the characters refer to Mario (and co.) as the “hero of prophecy” or simply “hero(es)”, never as “hero(es) of light”. It’s quite strange how we all have collectively agreed on the term “hero of light”, although I love it! So I’m not complaining 😂 1:22 , 1:57 , 2:41 I adore how you’ve made Flipside seem so lively! It’s pretty impressive since these are characters you can interact with in game but are not relevant at all to the story, so you’d expect them to be completely cut from a musical adaptation, so it’s really nice seeing them making individual cameos here! I suppose that Saffron, Merluvlee, Tinga, Howzit and Garson won’t be making any more appearances after this, though… (specially considering that Peach’s arrival to Flipside has been cut, so it is no longer necessary going to Saffron’s in order to awake her) Also, getting to see how the townspeople are also scared is quite sad, but at the same time encouraging, since Mario now knows that he has people to fight for! 1:36 I was expecting Mario to say "no" here so that we could see the bad ending… 😔😂 1:47 , 2:41 , 3:29 I already mentioned it in my first comment, but I love these drawings!! Great job, Citrine! 2:55 I adore the approach you’ve taken with Tippi’s character here! Ever since the musical’s first song (“Lineland Road”) came out, I’ve noticed that this Tippi is much more enthusiastic than the one from the game. I don’t say this as criticism, but as a well-thought adaptation of the character: First, the musical wouldn’t be as long as the actual game, so people don’t have as much time to get attached to Tippi (and many people complain about Tippi being boring during the game’s first chapters; not me, though! I think her character arc is fantastic!). Second, another reason why this works is that Mario is a silent protagonist, so there would be no one to sing for him if Tippi was as silent and serious as her game counterpart (her banter with Bestovius about the money in "Lineland Road" was pretty funny haha) Third, this is a good change because, this way, things now feel even more heartbreaking for her… She’s spent her time as a pixl helping Flipside and making new friends there and in other places, only to finally realize that the man who was once her fiance, and for whom she still has feelings, is the same one as the villain who is trying to destroy everything and everyone she’s fighting for. Lines such as “Flipside, you are my home / You mean the universe to me / These neighbors are my family” and “For the sake of these lives at stake / I will do anything it takes!” make me go like the “Should we tell him” Spongebob meme… Agh, my heart’s going to be broken into tiny pieces after the musical ends… But the one line that takes the cake is “I will do anything it takes”, if you know the ending of the game. On the one hand, Tippi didn’t end up having the guts to kill Bleck (which would have immediately saved everyone; so she doesn’t “do anything it takes”, as she says here) and she stopped the heroes from doing so in order to try and see of there was any other way; while, on the other hand, she ultimately decided to sacrifice herself alongside her love to save everyone (so she did end up doing “anything it takes”). It’s so bittersweet… (I like to think that they are alive, but I suppose it doesn’t matter, since we’ll never get to seem them again in a new game 🥺😭) Aside from all of that, I almost forgot to mention it, but I adore Coryncidence’s voice for Tippi!! 3:37 “He’s waiting” The first time I listened to this, I thought that Merlon was speaking about Bleck waiting for the heroes to arrive to stop him… This is what happens when a character consumes your brain completely: you start to believe that everything’s a reference to them 😂😂 4:12 “And Tippi dear, stay safe!” My heart breaks every time I remember that they could never say goodbye to one another 🥺 Especially since in the post-game it is revealed that the only reason why Mario and company get called again to Flipside is because Merlon wants to ask them if they have any news about Tippi’s whereabouts 😭😭 And then he tells you to visit him whenever you like because he’s so lonely now without her! He loved her so much!! Final verdict: a great introduction to the game’s plot and its hub world!! I wonder if Flipside will appear again in-between chapters or if the heroes will just jump from one world directly to the next one without wasting time to put each Heart in its Pillar. Also, how will the whole “space-helmet” thing get adapted? Will we see Captain Gills in the musical?

I hope he gets to appear in many other songs (“Flopside” is a given, I suppose; now I wonder: will you be playing Nolrem as well since they’re parallel versions of each other?🤔) Your job so far has been great!
This is the longest song yet, but more importantly, the first one featuring an ensemble singing cast/choir, and it's absolutely wonderful...! 🥺🥹💖 As was said in the discord, there truly are so many overlapping melodies here, including ones I don't necessarily notice or think of immediately in the original track (which is always one of my favorite aspects of these "video game songs given lyrics" projects, hearing the melodies given in the parts where a casual listening ear might not be inclined to pick up on them outside of the "main" melody), but everyone harmonizes together so well! I never expected all the townspeople to have such a prominent role, but I love hearing them sing alongside Merlon and Tippi about the void and the prophecy, and the individual parts the most notable Flipside npcs get (damn Tinga and her earring though... and Merluvlee.... and Saffron WAS there, but it wasn't about the Peach part at all!! aughhhh!!! *shakes fist*). I really love Tippi's emphasis on seeing Flipside as her home and its residents as her family. This is something that never really occurred to me in game, mostly because she's unfortunately kind of an emotionless blank slate at the start of the game, and by the time she does start to grow into her own character she's more focused on the plot and other characters outside of Flipside, but it makes PERFECT sense to add in here where she has a strong personality from the start, and is a wonderful touch for her character. We know she's very passionate in her love for the universe and all living things (just like *ahem* a certain _someone_ ), and Merlon is probably like a father figure to her, so of course Flipside would be her home... and it's also beautifully ironic, the fact that, to her, Flipside is where she's always been, the only home she's ever had :' ) It didn't hit me until yesterday lol but Tippi feels very Belle from Beauty and the Beast here, with her interactions with the town and Merlon, SHE REALLY IS GIVING SUCH DISNEY PRINCESS IN THIS MUSICAL (AND BATB FITS HER VERY WELL... ALL THINGS CONSIDERED...) and honestly I love that so so much, it's so perfect, I'm _so_ excited to hear more of her character in spmtm 😭💖 she is wonderful ugh, her characterization and singing so far is just *chef's kiss* Favorite lines! Love the repetition of "every line, every line, every line", "Drawn onto a line, between dimensions, by design" goes so hard somehow, and I love how Merlon sings "when the eight hearts join." 💖I LOOOOOVE the intermittent speaking bits in between the singing here, it's more than any song has had up to this point (though that's mostly due to it being the longest), and that makes it feel so very musical-y 🥰 And of course the art is fantastic as usual, though front facing Merlon staring down Mario across the long wide angled hallway, as well as shadowed in front of the Lineland door, feels strangely ominous to me somehow, I don't know why 🤣😭 "3D Merlon can't hurt you" 3D Merlon: Another banger song, but that's no surprise at this point. Waiting with bated breath for the next -preview- one as always 💖
Just read this comment for the first time (I didn’t notice that it was posted before, oof), but as soon as I saw you mentioning BATB (my favorite movie!) I knew I had to respond immediately!! I've always felt that Tippi and Merlon have a bond very reminiscent to that of Belle and Maurice’s. I wonder how a BATB Super Paper Mario AU could go: Belle would be Tippi (but as a human or as pixl?); Merlon would be Maurice; Bleck would be the Beast (would he be cursed? Or would he just be grieving Timpani?); the minions would be the servants/objects (but who would be each?). I have no idea who could be Gaston, or, rather, the actual villain (would Dimentio betray them as well here?) In terms of Disney Princesses, I think that Tippi is like a mixture between Belle and Anastasia (although the latter isn’t Disney, but she’s the only princess with lost memories I can think of 😅). I know Timpani’s not exactly a Mario princess, but she is a human Mario character, so I get really happy when I see someone including her with Peach, Daisy and the other Mario girls 💖 About Tippi’s character changes here, I suggest you read my most recent comment on this video because I talked about it at length (and I don’t want to repeat myself 😂). But, yes, I adore how now it truly feels like Tippi did actually love the worlds!! She’s so melancholic in the original game that her lashing out at Bleck because all living things are “priceless”, as she says, felt a bit weird, like it came out of nowhere, specially since every time she met someone new, she instantly thought they would betray her and the heroes (ex. Squirps) or that they were straight up weird (ex. Flint Cragley). In her defense, it probably didn’t help that she got kidnapped by a certain nerdy chameleon… I’m really excited to see how those moments will get tackled in the musical, too!!
@@rladylisalila lol well on that front, you should read my newer comment on the wedding video; it's sort of the second half of this one 😉 (edit as I'm typing this: HELP YOU ALREADY DID 😭 I'LL READ IT AFTER I FINISH THIS AND HOPE I DON'T REPEAT ANYTHING YOU SAID THERE LMAO) The SPM-BatB comparison is so interesting, because most of the elements of BatB are there, but spread out across the timeline. Timpani was probably a simple village girl like Belle, and she fell in love with Blumiere, who was not cursed or evil yet per se, but was already considered an outsider, being from the Tribe of Darkness, and who thought Timpani would be "repulsed" by him, so there's already roughly the story. Then, Blumiere is "cursed" so to speak with the Dark Prognosticus and becomes "evil" (using that term loosely obviously) and gains a new identity, and loses everything he held dear, and locks himself away in his cold and lonely castle, wasting away in his grief and hatred and isolation, albeit with servants who still care about him, though he can't recognize how much he cares about them. Then we have Tippi/Timpani falling in love with the beast "again", though it's technically just remembering her love for him from before, so you can't really say it's her falling for Bleck solely as he is now, because she already knows/knew him. But symbolically, the similarities/references are there, with Timpani loving the Beast because she loved him from before: because she knew his true heart. I guess you could say that, while Belle in BatB has to spend time with the beast for a while to get to know his true, kind self past his monstrous, cursed (emotional) exterior, Tippi went through that phase first, and thus she can look past the Beast in Bleck as soon as she meets him, and see Blumiere. I definitely think you could play up other elements of SPM to make them more similar to BatB, too. The residents of Flipside/Flopside aren't hostile, they probably wouldn't mob Bleck's castle lol (since it's the heroes' job to defeat him anyway), but in an AU where Tippi did end up letting it slip who Bleck is to her and she defends him and shows that she doesn't want him to die, there could definitely be interesting conflicts there between her and the villagers, wrt who she knows Blumiere to be vs. the monster everyone else sees him as because of what he's doing (and Merlon would try to understand/be more on her side, like Maurice). If we put Dimentio _loosely_ into the Gaston role (very loosely lmao), I could EASILY see him riling up this conflict from behind the scenes somehow, if nothing else just to cause drama and fuck with Bleck and Tippi lol. And and and okay picture this. The end of BatB has the Beast depressed after Belle leaves, and he's resigned to just letting the mob and Gaston come and kill him, cause he doesn't think Belle will come back and the curse is about to be permanent anyway, so he has nothing left to live for. During all of SPM, Bleck really does not want to be doing what he's doing _anyway_ , because deep down he still cares, but he doesn't have the strength or willpower to back out, because he really just wants to die, etc. This feeling of hopelessness and despair increases tenfold once he realizes Timpani is alive, because he DEFINITELY doesn't want to destroy the worlds and her, his will to live is the lowest its ever been at this point because he feels like he needs to die in order to save her, and knows he'll never be able to be with her, and believes he doesn't deserve to be, anyway. You could have Dimentio (Gaston) there taunting him about this, telling him the heroes and the one who calls him "Blumiere" are coming to kill him, etc, and Bleck says to just let them come, to the despair of Nastasia (like all the servants in BatB at this point). But _then_ , as soon as Tippi actually gets there, as soon as he SEES her, Bleck has a change of heart and actually starts trying to fight back, because HE REALLY WANTS TO LIVE TO BE WITH HER... 😭 And then and then, of course I adore how things play out in the game, with the minions being the ones to give Bleck his confidence and hope back before even Tippi can (very important; one of my favorite parts of the game), but..... imagine it playing out exactly like the end of BatB does instead. Bleck is dying (Dimentio's last attack hit him instead of Nastasia taking it), he tells Tippi he's glad he got to see her one last time, cue the emotional death scene and Tippi crying over him (i imagine the heroes are off in the background dealing with Super Dimentio while all this is going on lmao), but then suddenly the Pure Hearts appear and do their thing, and both Tippi and Bleck get their magical transformation sequence, turning Timpani back into her human form, and making Blumiere, well, alive lol, and maybe giving him his old outfit back or something, free from the DP's influence. Just tl;dr THE ENDING BATB SEQUENCE IS PRIME MATERIAL FOR THEM HERE. Have I been brainrotting about this for the past few weeks now? Maybe.... I would draw it if I could 😭😭😭 Now I'm thinking though, as a greater AU much closer to BatB.... It might be interesting to have the backstory play out the same as in the game, but Bleck ends up capturing Tippi the pixl somehow, and she slowly breaks through his shell and falls in love with him, with them feeling some sort of intrinsic connection between the two of them that they can't explain, and it's only at the very end when they both transform back (heroes wouldn't be a thing here, nor backstabbing Dimentio; probably Flipside/Flopside mob in this AU) that Tippi gets her memories back and realizes she's Timpani and that Bleck is Blumiere, and Blumiere realizes that she's Timpani? BatB with the twist of them falling for each other again as different yet similar people, fated to find each other again, not realizing who they both are until the end...... 🥺🥹💖 ahhhhhh the POTENTIAL And yeah re: Tippi's characterization in the musical, I love how much life it's given her. Blumpani is my OTP, but I feel kinda bad that I'm so much more invested in Bleck than Tippi, because the game just doesn't give her much to work with...... Like, she has amnesia, so I guess it makes sense for her to be kind of numb and lifeless in the early game, but it's like she doesn't grow a new personality of her own until she goes on the journey with the heroes, which I find.... kind of hard to believe? I much prefer her having found newfound happiness in Flipside with her new family, and already forming a new identity long before she met Mario and co (especially because it makes later reveals hurt so much more/makes it more painful for her, like you said...). And because she speedruns getting her memories back so quickly around the middle/end of the game, it feels like she does a jarring 180 degree shift on certain things like you said, when we never saw her care that much for most of the game... I really wish we could have had more scenes in the game to show her thoughts on things as she develops, to flesh out her character more 😔 and maybe tell us some of her backstory as she recalls it. But I'm happy the musical is doing her so much justice 😤💖 it's definitely going to make me cry so hard later lmao, and I look forward to it I swear the venn diagram of being a Count Bleck/SPM fan, a Beauty and the Beast fan, a Count of Monte Cristo fan, and a Phantom of the Opera fan is a circle 😅😭 I already knew it, but talking to you has confirmed it for me LOOOL

If I told you that I had already thought of all the SPM/BATB parallels you’ve mentioned, would you believe me? 🤣 There was a time when I listened to “Evermore” and “If I could love her (reprise)” just to imagine Bleck singing at the beginning of Chapter 8, right after his last meeting with Nastasia. Especially the final verses of “Evermore” fit him so well, with him trying to imagine what could have been in another life… I’ve always believed that Count Bleck didn’t fight to the fullest when he faced Mario and the rest of the heroes because he wanted the universe to live, and so he was just trying to fake still being the villain in order to get himself killed by them without any mercy 😔 Another song that fits at this moment, although it’s more hopeful, is “The man I used to be” from The Count of Monte Cristo musical. There’s a really good animatic out there of Bleck with this song, which led to me reading The Count of Monte Cristo, and discovering the musical haha. There’s quite a few songs in it that fit Blupani: “I know those eyes/This man is dead” foremost (I’ve always imagined this song taking place in Chapter 6 with their “reunion”🥺); “I will be there” also fits them for when they both were still hopeful about finding each other before Timpani got transformed into a pixl and Bleck chose to destroy everything… Recently, I have been listening to “Would you fall in love with me again” from EPIC The Musical, and I have come to the conclusion that it also fits them so well. The song actually helped me realize why in the end, Tippi “forgives” Bleck so easily: because, just like Penelope, she has been waiting so long to find again her lover that she doesn’t care about what he’s done; it would be a far greater torture for her to just let him go 😭 About the closer-to-BATB AU, I love this so much!! I headcanon that the reason why Tippi fell in love with Mario during the game was because he reminded her of Blumiere, and so she felt inclined to having feelings for him because she hadn’t yet realized that the man of her memories/dreams had been an actual person and that he was still alive. Blumiere and Timpani do really give the feeling that they would be the sort of lovers to fall in love in any universe/reincarnation 🥹 Also, about the transformation sequence, it’s pretty funny that you mention Bleck being revived by the power of the Pure Hearts (in the context of Dimentio’s attack hitting him instead of Nastasia), because I’ve had for years the theory that, already in the original game, Bleck was revived by the Pure Hearts. My theory is that what we see in the game isn’t his true appearance and that he’s actually a ghost escaped from The Underwhere, so in reality he wouldn’t look like his game appearance after wedding Timpani because the Pure Hearts would revert him to his true form (really hope you can understand what I’m trying to say here; it’s two in the morning where I live and my mind isn’t properly working at this hour 😂) But yeah, all of your BATB ideas are so good! 😭 Timpani and Bleck do really fit with BATB’s themes As for the whole fandom thing, I feel like at this pace we would finish much earlier by listing which fandoms we do _not_ have in common 😂😂 I gotta say, I’m not the biggest PotO fan (it’s not that I hate/dislike it, it’s just that I’ve never had a real hyperfixation with it like I’ve had with SPM and Mario in general, or BATB, or The Count of Monte Cristo), but I have to admit that the songs are very gorgeous. And also, that Love Never Dies makes no sense: why did the characters of Raoul, Meg and Madame Giry change so much from the original musical to the sequel? Just so that the Phantom is seen as the “good guy” in comparison? How convenient that just as I re-enter my SPM phase after a few years, I come across this masterpiece being released bit by bit. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say it was prophesied to be this way.. Seriously, fantastic work to all of you so far! Adapting the game’s dialogue into lyrics almost seamlessly is a real achievement. The fact it all sounds as good as it does is just the icing on the cake too! Keep them coming!
Great job once again! To everyone involved!! The artwork is gorgeous!! The editing is great (very well paced video). voice casting spot on as always. But the lyric writing here was so amazing! I loved how it portrayed the friendly town of lineland while also moving the plot farther. I also like how Tippi’s character is so attached to this place as her home and her willingness to help them. I love that addition and wish the game touched on it more!! TLDR: great job!! I am obsessed!!

I love the artwork! Flipside has always been one of my favorite themes! I've played through this game three times! It's probably my favorite video game! :)
So in the end Flipside truly _was_ song number 4!!! My predictions have thus far been correct haha (Then this leaves the wedding to be song number 3) I'll return at a later date (probably tomorrow) to edit this comment in order to put a larger analysis, but know that I have been watching this with a smile on my face the whole time!! Before ending this comment (for now, that is...), I just want to highlight the artwork!!! Cititrinne has outdone himself with all the amazing artwork by capturing not only Flipside's bustling atmosphere, but also the otherwordly presence of the first Pure Heart and door. I also love how Mario looks so squishy haha
These are way too underrated!! I love those parts where multiple people are singing different lyrics at the same time but it still sounds great! Beautiful performance!! The lyrics in itself are great too!! Also the choir parts always gave me insane goosebumbs! Keep it up!! As a SPM Fan I approve of this!!
Ughhh, Flipside _was_ song 4... My predictions were perfectly fine how they were, but I overthought it! Although this pretty much completely confirms that the third video will be the wedding, but which songs will it be? Anyway, this song is amazing! Tippi's VA is awesome as usual, and the new VAs did great too! I like how Merlon sounds like Yoda (especially starting at 1:06), it's surprisingly fitting for him!

The art for this video is extremely good! Merlon looks so cool at 0:10! I like how true to the original game the background is as well, with the pillars and the hearts off to the side. It also gives off the surreal feeling that Flipside has, bright and somewhat empty, while still very detailed! The art at 1:25 gives off the more homely feel Flipside has, while still showing off the surrealness I mentioned earlier. I also love how you can still see the void looming in the distance, and all the citizens of Flipside seem somewhat worried about it. It gives off the feeling of an ever-looming threat perfectly!
Merlon is one of my favorite characters in the game, so I'm glad to see he got plenty of lines in this song! His lyrics were also really good in my opinion. Good job on writing lyrics that both sound good and tell you all the backstory you would need to know about the pure hearts and the void!
I really liked the section where all the Flipside residents were singing together about Flipside, and also the section where all the shopkeepers are offering Mario their services, it truly did just feel like people living their everyday lives, which makes the ever-looming void in the distance ever more melancholy.

0:02 Merlon’s voice surprised me at first; I expected it to be lower pitched, but now it’s grown on me! He truly sounds like a “grandpa”, for lack of a better word right now haha; he reminds me of Disney characters like Maurice from Beauty and the Beast or the Sultan from Aladdin. I’ve always imagined that his relationship with Tippi was that of a father-daughter or grandpa-granddaughter, so it really fits!!
0:30 “Tippi! You have truly outdone yourself” This sentence is directly said in game; I’ve always adored how Merlon is so supportive to Tippi. The girl (well, pixl) really needed a helping hand after all she had been through and I'm so glad that it was Merlon the one who helped her 🥰
0:55 Did you know that the term “hero of light” is never actually used in the game? (Or at least, I’m pretty certain that it isn’t) I realized this not too long ago. The fandom has been using the term “heroes of light” since the beginning and it’s stuck across the years, but when I reread the game’s dialogue I noticed that the characters refer to Mario (and co.) as the “hero of prophecy” or simply “hero(es)”, never as “hero(es) of light”. It’s quite strange how we all have collectively agreed on the term “hero of light”, although I love it! So I’m not complaining 😂
1:22 , 1:57 , 2:41 I adore how you’ve made Flipside seem so lively! It’s pretty impressive since these are characters you can interact with in game but are not relevant at all to the story, so you’d expect them to be completely cut from a musical adaptation, so it’s really nice seeing them making individual cameos here! I suppose that Saffron, Merluvlee, Tinga, Howzit and Garson won’t be making any more appearances after this, though… (specially considering that Peach’s arrival to Flipside has been cut, so it is no longer necessary going to Saffron’s in order to awake her)
Also, getting to see how the townspeople are also scared is quite sad, but at the same time encouraging, since Mario now knows that he has people to fight for!

2:55 I adore the approach you’ve taken with Tippi’s character here! Ever since the musical’s first song (“Lineland Road”) came out, I’ve noticed that this Tippi is much more enthusiastic than the one from the game. I don’t say this as criticism, but as a well-thought adaptation of the character:
First, the musical wouldn’t be as long as the actual game, so people don’t have as much time to get attached to Tippi (and many people complain about Tippi being boring during the game’s first chapters; not me, though! I think her character arc is fantastic!).
Second, another reason why this works is that Mario is a silent protagonist, so there would be no one to sing for him if Tippi was as silent and serious as her game counterpart (her banter with Bestovius about the money in "Lineland Road" was pretty funny haha)
Third, this is a good change because, this way, things now feel even more heartbreaking for her… She’s spent her time as a pixl helping Flipside and making new friends there and in other places, only to finally realize that the man who was once her fiance, and for whom she still has feelings, is the same one as the villain who is trying to destroy everything and everyone she’s fighting for.
Lines such as “Flipside, you are my home / You mean the universe to me / These neighbors are my family” and “For the sake of these lives at stake / I will do anything it takes!” make me go like the “Should we tell him” Spongebob meme… Agh, my heart’s going to be broken into tiny pieces after the musical ends…
But the one line that takes the cake is “I will do anything it takes”, if you know the ending of the game. On the one hand, Tippi didn’t end up having the guts to kill Bleck (which would have immediately saved everyone; so she doesn’t “do anything it takes”, as she says here) and she stopped the heroes from doing so in order to try and see of there was any other way; while, on the other hand, she ultimately decided to sacrifice herself alongside her love to save everyone (so she did end up doing “anything it takes”). It’s so bittersweet… (I like to think that they are alive, but I suppose it doesn’t matter, since we’ll never get to seem them again in a new game 🥺😭)
Aside from all of that, I almost forgot to mention it, but I adore Coryncidence’s voice for Tippi!!
3:37 “He’s waiting” The first time I listened to this, I thought that Merlon was speaking about Bleck waiting for the heroes to arrive to stop him… This is what happens when a character consumes your brain completely: you start to believe that everything’s a reference to them 😂😂
4:12 “And Tippi dear, stay safe!” My heart breaks every time I remember that they could never say goodbye to one another 🥺 Especially since in the post-game it is revealed that the only reason why Mario and company get called again to Flipside is because Merlon wants to ask them if they have any news about Tippi’s whereabouts 😭😭 And then he tells you to visit him whenever you like because he’s so lonely now without her! He loved her so much!!
Final verdict: a great introduction to the game’s plot and its hub world!! I wonder if Flipside will appear again in-between chapters or if the heroes will just jump from one world directly to the next one without wasting time to put each Heart in its Pillar. Also, how will the whole “space-helmet” thing get adapted? Will we see Captain Gills in the musical?

This is the longest song yet, but more importantly, the first one featuring an ensemble singing cast/choir, and it's absolutely wonderful...! 🥺🥹💖 As was said in the discord, there truly are so many overlapping melodies here, including ones I don't necessarily notice or think of immediately in the original track (which is always one of my favorite aspects of these "video game songs given lyrics" projects, hearing the melodies given in the parts where a casual listening ear might not be inclined to pick up on them outside of the "main" melody), but everyone harmonizes together so well! I never expected all the townspeople to have such a prominent role, but I love hearing them sing alongside Merlon and Tippi about the void and the prophecy, and the individual parts the most notable Flipside npcs get (damn Tinga and her earring though... and Merluvlee.... and Saffron WAS there, but it wasn't about the Peach part at all!! aughhhh!!! *shakes fist*).
I really love Tippi's emphasis on seeing Flipside as her home and its residents as her family. This is something that never really occurred to me in game, mostly because she's unfortunately kind of an emotionless blank slate at the start of the game, and by the time she does start to grow into her own character she's more focused on the plot and other characters outside of Flipside, but it makes PERFECT sense to add in here where she has a strong personality from the start, and is a wonderful touch for her character. We know she's very passionate in her love for the universe and all living things (just like *ahem* a certain _someone_ ), and Merlon is probably like a father figure to her, so of course Flipside would be her home... and it's also beautifully ironic, the fact that, to her, Flipside is where she's always been, the only home she's ever had :' ) It didn't hit me until yesterday lol but Tippi feels very Belle from Beauty and the Beast here, with her interactions with the town and Merlon, SHE REALLY IS GIVING SUCH DISNEY PRINCESS IN THIS MUSICAL (AND BATB FITS HER VERY WELL... ALL THINGS CONSIDERED...) and honestly I love that so so much, it's so perfect, I'm _so_ excited to hear more of her character in spmtm 😭💖 she is wonderful ugh, her characterization and singing so far is just *chef's kiss*
Favorite lines! Love the repetition of "every line, every line, every line", "Drawn onto a line, between dimensions, by design" goes so hard somehow, and I love how Merlon sings "when the eight hearts join." 💖I LOOOOOVE the intermittent speaking bits in between the singing here, it's more than any song has had up to this point (though that's mostly due to it being the longest), and that makes it feel so very musical-y 🥰 And of course the art is fantastic as usual, though front facing Merlon staring down Mario across the long wide angled hallway, as well as shadowed in front of the Lineland door, feels strangely ominous to me somehow, I don't know why 🤣😭 "3D Merlon can't hurt you" 3D Merlon:

Just read this comment for the first time (I didn’t notice that it was posted before, oof), but as soon as I saw you mentioning BATB (my favorite movie!) I knew I had to respond immediately!!
I've always felt that Tippi and Merlon have a bond very reminiscent to that of Belle and Maurice’s. I wonder how a BATB Super Paper Mario AU could go: Belle would be Tippi (but as a human or as pixl?); Merlon would be Maurice; Bleck would be the Beast (would he be cursed? Or would he just be grieving Timpani?); the minions would be the servants/objects (but who would be each?). I have no idea who could be Gaston, or, rather, the actual villain (would Dimentio betray them as well here?)
In terms of Disney Princesses, I think that Tippi is like a mixture between Belle and Anastasia (although the latter isn’t Disney, but she’s the only princess with lost memories I can think of 😅). I know Timpani’s not exactly a Mario princess, but she is a human Mario character, so I get really happy when I see someone including her with Peach, Daisy and the other Mario girls 💖
About Tippi’s character changes here, I suggest you read my most recent comment on this video because I talked about it at length (and I don’t want to repeat myself 😂). But, yes, I adore how now it truly feels like Tippi did actually love the worlds!! She’s so melancholic in the original game that her lashing out at Bleck because all living things are “priceless”, as she says, felt a bit weird, like it came out of nowhere, specially since every time she met someone new, she instantly thought they would betray her and the heroes (ex. Squirps) or that they were straight up weird (ex. Flint Cragley). In her defense, it probably didn’t help that she got kidnapped by a certain nerdy chameleon…
I’m really excited to see how those moments will get tackled in the musical, too!!

The SPM-BatB comparison is so interesting, because most of the elements of BatB are there, but spread out across the timeline. Timpani was probably a simple village girl like Belle, and she fell in love with Blumiere, who was not cursed or evil yet per se, but was already considered an outsider, being from the Tribe of Darkness, and who thought Timpani would be "repulsed" by him, so there's already roughly the story. Then, Blumiere is "cursed" so to speak with the Dark Prognosticus and becomes "evil" (using that term loosely obviously) and gains a new identity, and loses everything he held dear, and locks himself away in his cold and lonely castle, wasting away in his grief and hatred and isolation, albeit with servants who still care about him, though he can't recognize how much he cares about them. Then we have Tippi/Timpani falling in love with the beast "again", though it's technically just remembering her love for him from before, so you can't really say it's her falling for Bleck solely as he is now, because she already knows/knew him. But symbolically, the similarities/references are there, with Timpani loving the Beast because she loved him from before: because she knew his true heart. I guess you could say that, while Belle in BatB has to spend time with the beast for a while to get to know his true, kind self past his monstrous, cursed (emotional) exterior, Tippi went through that phase first, and thus she can look past the Beast in Bleck as soon as she meets him, and see Blumiere.
I definitely think you could play up other elements of SPM to make them more similar to BatB, too. The residents of Flipside/Flopside aren't hostile, they probably wouldn't mob Bleck's castle lol (since it's the heroes' job to defeat him anyway), but in an AU where Tippi did end up letting it slip who Bleck is to her and she defends him and shows that she doesn't want him to die, there could definitely be interesting conflicts there between her and the villagers, wrt who she knows Blumiere to be vs. the monster everyone else sees him as because of what he's doing (and Merlon would try to understand/be more on her side, like Maurice). If we put Dimentio _loosely_ into the Gaston role (very loosely lmao), I could EASILY see him riling up this conflict from behind the scenes somehow, if nothing else just to cause drama and fuck with Bleck and Tippi lol.
And and and okay picture this. The end of BatB has the Beast depressed after Belle leaves, and he's resigned to just letting the mob and Gaston come and kill him, cause he doesn't think Belle will come back and the curse is about to be permanent anyway, so he has nothing left to live for. During all of SPM, Bleck really does not want to be doing what he's doing _anyway_ , because deep down he still cares, but he doesn't have the strength or willpower to back out, because he really just wants to die, etc. This feeling of hopelessness and despair increases tenfold once he realizes Timpani is alive, because he DEFINITELY doesn't want to destroy the worlds and her, his will to live is the lowest its ever been at this point because he feels like he needs to die in order to save her, and knows he'll never be able to be with her, and believes he doesn't deserve to be, anyway. You could have Dimentio (Gaston) there taunting him about this, telling him the heroes and the one who calls him "Blumiere" are coming to kill him, etc, and Bleck says to just let them come, to the despair of Nastasia (like all the servants in BatB at this point). But _then_ , as soon as Tippi actually gets there, as soon as he SEES her, Bleck has a change of heart and actually starts trying to fight back, because HE REALLY WANTS TO LIVE TO BE WITH HER... 😭
And then and then, of course I adore how things play out in the game, with the minions being the ones to give Bleck his confidence and hope back before even Tippi can (very important; one of my favorite parts of the game), but..... imagine it playing out exactly like the end of BatB does instead. Bleck is dying (Dimentio's last attack hit him instead of Nastasia taking it), he tells Tippi he's glad he got to see her one last time, cue the emotional death scene and Tippi crying over him (i imagine the heroes are off in the background dealing with Super Dimentio while all this is going on lmao), but then suddenly the Pure Hearts appear and do their thing, and both Tippi and Bleck get their magical transformation sequence, turning Timpani back into her human form, and making Blumiere, well, alive lol, and maybe giving him his old outfit back or something, free from the DP's influence. Just tl;dr THE ENDING BATB SEQUENCE IS PRIME MATERIAL FOR THEM HERE. Have I been brainrotting about this for the past few weeks now? Maybe.... I would draw it if I could 😭😭😭
Now I'm thinking though, as a greater AU much closer to BatB.... It might be interesting to have the backstory play out the same as in the game, but Bleck ends up capturing Tippi the pixl somehow, and she slowly breaks through his shell and falls in love with him, with them feeling some sort of intrinsic connection between the two of them that they can't explain, and it's only at the very end when they both transform back (heroes wouldn't be a thing here, nor backstabbing Dimentio; probably Flipside/Flopside mob in this AU) that Tippi gets her memories back and realizes she's Timpani and that Bleck is Blumiere, and Blumiere realizes that she's Timpani? BatB with the twist of them falling for each other again as different yet similar people, fated to find each other again, not realizing who they both are until the end...... 🥺🥹💖 ahhhhhh the POTENTIAL
And yeah re: Tippi's characterization in the musical, I love how much life it's given her. Blumpani is my OTP, but I feel kinda bad that I'm so much more invested in Bleck than Tippi, because the game just doesn't give her much to work with...... Like, she has amnesia, so I guess it makes sense for her to be kind of numb and lifeless in the early game, but it's like she doesn't grow a new personality of her own until she goes on the journey with the heroes, which I find.... kind of hard to believe? I much prefer her having found newfound happiness in Flipside with her new family, and already forming a new identity long before she met Mario and co (especially because it makes later reveals hurt so much more/makes it more painful for her, like you said...). And because she speedruns getting her memories back so quickly around the middle/end of the game, it feels like she does a jarring 180 degree shift on certain things like you said, when we never saw her care that much for most of the game... I really wish we could have had more scenes in the game to show her thoughts on things as she develops, to flesh out her character more 😔 and maybe tell us some of her backstory as she recalls it. But I'm happy the musical is doing her so much justice 😤💖 it's definitely going to make me cry so hard later lmao, and I look forward to it

There was a time when I listened to “Evermore” and “If I could love her (reprise)” just to imagine Bleck singing at the beginning of Chapter 8, right after his last meeting with Nastasia. Especially the final verses of “Evermore” fit him so well, with him trying to imagine what could have been in another life… I’ve always believed that Count Bleck didn’t fight to the fullest when he faced Mario and the rest of the heroes because he wanted the universe to live, and so he was just trying to fake still being the villain in order to get himself killed by them without any mercy 😔
Another song that fits at this moment, although it’s more hopeful, is “The man I used to be” from The Count of Monte Cristo musical. There’s a really good animatic out there of Bleck with this song, which led to me reading The Count of Monte Cristo, and discovering the musical haha. There’s quite a few songs in it that fit Blupani: “I know those eyes/This man is dead” foremost (I’ve always imagined this song taking place in Chapter 6 with their “reunion”🥺); “I will be there” also fits them for when they both were still hopeful about finding each other before Timpani got transformed into a pixl and Bleck chose to destroy everything…
Recently, I have been listening to “Would you fall in love with me again” from EPIC The Musical, and I have come to the conclusion that it also fits them so well. The song actually helped me realize why in the end, Tippi “forgives” Bleck so easily: because, just like Penelope, she has been waiting so long to find again her lover that she doesn’t care about what he’s done; it would be a far greater torture for her to just let him go 😭
About the closer-to-BATB AU, I love this so much!! I headcanon that the reason why Tippi fell in love with Mario during the game was because he reminded her of Blumiere, and so she felt inclined to having feelings for him because she hadn’t yet realized that the man of her memories/dreams had been an actual person and that he was still alive. Blumiere and Timpani do really give the feeling that they would be the sort of lovers to fall in love in any universe/reincarnation 🥹
Also, about the transformation sequence, it’s pretty funny that you mention Bleck being revived by the power of the Pure Hearts (in the context of Dimentio’s attack hitting him instead of Nastasia), because I’ve had for years the theory that, already in the original game, Bleck was revived by the Pure Hearts. My theory is that what we see in the game isn’t his true appearance and that he’s actually a ghost escaped from The Underwhere, so in reality he wouldn’t look like his game appearance after wedding Timpani because the Pure Hearts would revert him to his true form (really hope you can understand what I’m trying to say here; it’s two in the morning where I live and my mind isn’t properly working at this hour 😂)
But yeah, all of your BATB ideas are so good! 😭 Timpani and Bleck do really fit with BATB’s themes

I gotta say, I’m not the biggest PotO fan (it’s not that I hate/dislike it, it’s just that I’ve never had a real hyperfixation with it like I’ve had with SPM and Mario in general, or BATB, or The Count of Monte Cristo), but I have to admit that the songs are very gorgeous. And also, that Love Never Dies makes no sense: why did the characters of Raoul, Meg and Madame Giry change so much from the original musical to the sequel? Just so that the Phantom is seen as the “good guy” in comparison? Look I know Erik’s a morally grey character, but it all just feels like a lazy attempt at fanfiction…

I had never heard “If I Could Love Her” before, but ohh it does fit, AND SO DOES THAT SONG FROM EPIC OH MY GODDDD 😭💔 it’s so beautiful and sad….. NEW BLUMPANI HYPERFIXATION SONG FOR SURE. And yes for sure, so many of the Monte Cristo musical songs are PEAK Blumpani. Those three you named are my favorites for sure 🥹 and they all fit so well ueeeeee….. The SPM to CoMC pipeline truly is so real; I got into SPM first, and then fell in love with the CoMC anime partly because it reminded me of Bleck, and now fast forward to 2024, my SPM fixation reawakened and so has my love for CoMC, with the musical songs reminding me of SPM (I had heard “The Man I Used To Be” years ago, from a Professor Layton amv LMAO, but for some ungodly reason I’d never listened to the rest of them until this year; they’re all so GOOD UGHHHH)
And yeah speaking of Layton, which you mentioned in your other reply, it really does feel like we’re soulmates cause yeah wow, what DON’T we have in common 🤣😭💖 Not only Layton, but you have a Kirby icon, and coincidentally I’m also going through a huge Kirby hyperfixation (by which I mostly mean Return to Dream Land ahaha….. if we’re as alike as we seem to be, you can probably guess where I’m going with that 😅) right now alongside my SPM one LMAO, so there’s another series we have in common 😭 I hope this isn’t weird/too forward to ask, but do you have Discord? The BATB musical is so lovely ^^ I think that “A Change in Me” is a great song for Tippi; that and “Once Upon a December” and “Journey to the Past” from Anastasia. I’ve also been recently listening to Wicked and I’ve come to imagine a sort-of-bad ending for SPM with the song “No One Mourns the Wicked”, in which Bleck is the only one to die and Tippi has to act as if she didn’t know him in front of the Flipside villagers 😭 After all, there are some leftovers from the original game that pinpoint to the fact that perhaps it was at first considered that Bleck would be the only sacrifice (there’s an unused Tippi tattle for Nastasia, in which she laments that they both have lost the man they loved…🥺) Btw, for more songs that could fit Bleck, I think “Death to your doorstep” is another great banger from CoMC
As for the Twitter thing, believe it or not, I’m actually very active there; the thing is that I don’t tweet/retweet anything, I just give likes 😂 But now, thanks to Elon, it’s impossible to see that 😅 And no! Don’t worry, it’s not creepy or annoying. I saw that you followed me, and followed you back, btw. Great job once again! To everyone involved!! The artwork is gorgeous!! The editing is great (very well paced video). voice casting spot on as always. But the lyric writing here was so amazing! I loved how it portrayed the friendly town of lineland while also moving the plot farther. I also like how Tippi’s character is so attached to this place as her home and her willingness to help them. I love that addition and wish the game touched on it more!!

Oh my gosh it turned out so well!!! Merlon and Tippi’s voices are perfect, and the ensemble’s countermelodies are just as much fun to listen to as they were to sing!

Cititrinne has outdone himself with all the amazing artwork by capturing not only Flipside's bustling atmosphere, but also the otherwordly presence of the first Pure Heart and door. I also love how Mario looks so squishy haha

These are way too underrated!! I love those parts where multiple people are singing different lyrics at the same time but it still sounds great! Beautiful performance!! The lyrics in itself are great too!! Also the choir parts always gave me insane goosebumbs! Keep it up!! As a SPM Fan I approve of this!!

Ughhh, Flipside _was_ song 4... My predictions were perfectly fine how they were, but I overthought it! Although this pretty much completely confirms that the third video will be the wedding, but which songs will it be?
Anyway, this song is amazing! Tippi's VA is awesome as usual, and the new VAs did great too! I like how Merlon sounds like Yoda (especially starting at 1:06), it's surprisingly fitting for him!
