Rolled the dice at auction on a 1996 Western Star 4964F! Am I insane?

- part 1- I finally found one, and it looked really good in the pics. The auction was across the country so I rolled the dice. Not sure that was a smart move! Empty promises from the seller- surprise, surprise.

Buying a Semi at a auction is like picking up a woman at a Bar. When the Alcohol wears off you see the real deal.
😂 i hear that! Thing is, the more i look at it more excited i get to finally just yank out that engine and build what i have wanted to build for decades now.
That's were I got mine
@@jeremybishop9848 they got great cabs
👍👍👍 I just subbed to your channel. I hope you get that old girl sorted out. That’s a very nice truck.👍👍👍 like you say hard to find those these days that are in that good of shape, body wise
Always love the old western stars. Sorry you had such a debacle with that one.
Your not Insane very nice 96 WS
Love them horns
Thanks!
Very nice truck! I was watching it online for a long time. Looking forward to seeing more. I drive a heritage dump truck and own an 89 tractor that I'm fixing up. Love the old stars!
Right on!
If they would build them like the old ones wire headed engineers are costly
I bought a 1994 4864F off a guy sight unseen, talked with him alot on phone and he sounded truthful. Safe to say I'll never do that again there was a few issues, not to bad but bad enough to be several thousand dollars worth to fix and he clearly lied no doubt but that's what you get if you don't look yourself in person. Goodluck with your truck, hopfully there's not to much wrong, they are quite cool old rigs.
Its always a gamble. Thank you!
I’d love to see maybe a series or some videos of you fixin up the old girl. Seems like this vid got a lot a positive views! You seem great behind the camera man. Can’t wait to see more! :)
thanks for the kind words, the response has been amazing!! stay tuned there is more on the way
Can't wait to see an update video
stay tuned, due to the overwhelming response to this video i will be making more! thanks for watching!
They were hand built. Probably the nicest frame you'll find. Not really enough dealers. Small cabs if your over 6 ft. Looks like a nice find.
Thanks. The dealer situation was always an issue in my area. This is pete and kw country, very few stars.
@@jeremybishop9848 what kept me from getting one was resale values were lower compared to Packard. I always wished I'd bought one with sticks
What he said, best cross members and brackets you'll ever find
@@forestlawrencegrading9154 the frame on the auction truck Jeremy bought was exceptional 👌
Man that thing is mean af lookin driv,ah. Would love to hear those 4 horns on top. Gonna subscribe and hope to hear them in a video at some point in time. CONGRATULATIONS on one of the toughest RIG'S around..
Coming soon!
Yeah, it looks like you’re gonna have to throw some money at it. Such is life. Just subscribed!
Yup, that's truckin. Thanks!
B positive man I've owned trucks 8 of them 43yrs stay positive I've bought mostly good ones a few bad but it all works out I grew up in Rhode Island was working for c line then Anderson rigging out of Plainfield mass rt 1 moved to SC 28 yrs ago been trucking strong till this yr getting ready to retier ,,,don't forget that's a jewel waiting to b polished b positive good luck
Thank you, I'm pretty excited to go through it and bring it back to its former glory. I love these trucks!
Old politions think they can make a new climate
Let the buyer beware.
Super nice ride. Let it be, polish, and bring it over to the community park truck show in Macungie, PA. You did good!
I will see you there, I go every year as i live in the region, thanks!
I think you did awesome. That’s a beautiful truck!!!
Thanks 👍
Don’t feel lonesome. I too have bought sight unseen and you got the better deal! Truck I bought was 4x rougher than what I was told.
Your W/S looks like a lot of good truck. It will take some time and money to partially or fully rebuild but hey, that’s still cheaper than a new rig so you’re doing alright. I’m assuming you paid the right price. Hopefully you didn’t overpay. Good luck to you friend. Wishing you all the best with your new project!
I think we'll make out ok on it, like you i have been through this before. It usually works out in the end. All it takes is the cash to get it done!
Damn. ! That's a shame. Looking like Good Bones. Like you said. It's going to take some money and TLC to get the old gal back in shape. One thing. Caterpillar recommends Cat Red antifreeze. Probably you should get a new totally new wire harness for the engine. Especially since it lived in the Northeast. It's going to be a really cool project truck. Best of Luck. Will be looking forward to seeing the progress. Stay Safe out There 🇺🇸 👍🦺
Thanks, more to come! I have seen (and resurrected) much much worse. It will definitely have Cat ELC in it when we are done with it
I like the old cab style on those.
This is my first heritage star, i really like the old cab as well. Thanks!
Wasn't much ugly
Love the old Kelowna built Star Cars.... Back when WS built a great truck.... Similar to the old Chatham Ontario built International's.... Hope she turns out to be a great rig for ya
Its amazing, the doors arent falling off of it like my peterbilts always were. Solid but very heavy cab!
I have that charger just an FYI NOCO came out with a fast charger for it charges the thing from dead to full in just a couple of
Hours.
Thanks!
I hope to see more of this truck, looks like a good base though being screwed over sucks it shouldn't be a surprise these days
Absolutely no surprise. We can make it right and it will be nice when its done!
It needs a complete teardown...start on the frame and work your way up....going to be nicely recognized when your done.
oil in the coolant but not much most likely oil cooler need to be changed had that problem twice with 2 different cats
it goes a little deeper. keep watching future videos, it gets worse! lol
Truck was for sale for a long time in CT. Boss Looked at it but passed. Said it did not seem right. Hope u have good luck with it.
Your boss is a smart man, lol.
I used to heavy haul and run a 4 axle western star, silver, had a Detroit, ran good, but the trailer was heavy.
The old W/S' s are good solid trucks. I own a 1993 W/S . The thing just keeps on going. Starting to get a bit difficult to find some parts for it from the dealership so I'm always looking for ones not in use anymore.
thanks for the heads up on the parts situation!
Call T Quip in Manchester nh they can tell you what they did what it had in it. Most of his trucks had cats with around 425 hp to 435 hp in them. The one I had the 425 mechanical cat that’s what mine had in it. And a 8 LL trans. I think They sold the trucking part of the business off about 10 to 15 years ago. But the keeped good records on the trucks.
Thanks I really appreciate that! I will call them. According to the door sticker it came with a 3406e@ 475 and an 8LL.
@@jeremybishop9848 heavy hauler he probably had a bigger motor than the dirt trucks
Oil in the coolant means it has a cracked head or something like that. I hope u get everything worked out with it. An u just got another subscriber hope to see updates here soon
Roger that, stay tuned. thanks!
Looks like it has good bones.good luck man
thank you!
Someone slapped that truck together. But, no smoke and no knocking sounds. The tires have lots of tread, and don't seem dry rotted...are they a complete loss/can't trust them kind of thing?
I think i can use the tires, at least for a little while. No dry rot just old.
Thibeault’s old lowbed tractor, she was the flagship of the fleet, they’re out of NH
If you are friendly with them I would love to know more about the truck!
I drove that truck tebortkorp in Londonderry,, I put a half million miles on it.. heavy All the time..140-160 lbs..550 cat was in it when I got to drive it when it was New..
Really?? Thats awesome! Can you tell us any more about it?
That's not the same truck!! I work for thibeault corp / Ernie and Michael thibeault!! Bobby G and Mike d and i drove 5hat truck until we sold it to Rooster that owned Specialized!! Their was a second truck ordered in 1999 ! Witch they sold just a short time ago!
Drove more than a few of those model western star logging trucks in Maine very tough trucks compared to other manufacturer's. I'm sure you'll fix it up like you want.
at this point it's a blank slate i guess, silver lining?
That’s a old T Quipment truck from Manchester New Hampshire. I bought one in 2005 ram it for years. He must of had 40 tractors running dump trailers all looked the same good looking fleet.
Guy from NH was a Field mec for a cat dealership the contractor keep him stayed all day everyday overhauled engines anything even started the 57s for us do you know who he is
This would have been in 89
HERITAGE WITH CAT POWER FOR LIFE!!!!
Oh man i love these i drove same year and model with a n14 525 hp cummins 13 speed it hauled i loved it these are getting hard to find ever wanna sell it serious buyer here
Thanks I'll keep that in mind for sure
You like mack? Have a 2002 vision sleeper truck 4 sale
WS makes a nice truck. Few things to sort out, hopefully nothing major. At least it wasn't pouring smoke out when running.
They really are nice trucks!
Oh, woh is me, I bought a 96 class 8 and it wasnt factory fresh, I just cant understand it. My 99 4962ex ran for 1.4 million miles before it was moved to a dump truck. That truck is solid and you didnt get screwed.
factory fresh and completely thrown together but promised a good truck are two different things! Thanks for watching!
I always change all the fluids then ad a bottle of big bottle of bars leak in the new coolest and never had any trouble she's a sweetheart I think just being positive for you lol it will b a horse for ya great truck I love western stars
I got to get me one of those jump boxes. Damn sure beats jumper cables 🥵
They really are fantastic!
Still a beautiful truck
Thanks!
This truck was at north country auctions dighton mass September 17. I actually took a picture of the Pintle plate for a reference to work from for our truck. I really liked this truck and watched it to make sure it didn’t go to cheap. Great running cat looked like it was well taken care of
what is too cheap? i think someone bought this truck and swapped the drivetrain with some junkyard parts.
@@jeremybishop9848 crappy truucks
@@jeremybishop9848 $34000 was enough but it has alot of potential and will be a nice truck
The mileage would explain the speed sensor problem they unhooked it 😆
agreed! Who knows if it even works. I guess we will find out eventually.
Still looks like a nice old Star car.
Thanks i think so too!
You really lucked out with it being swapped over to an 18 speed, that’s a really high cost proposition over an 8LL. Around here a good reman 16918 goes for $5,500 and up and the higher torque rated models are up in the $7-9k range. A reman’d 16908ll by comparison is in the $3,000 range. Really surprised that truck only had a 147 series trans in it, I’d think a 475 electronic 3406 would put out over the 1450 ft-lbs that 8ll was rated for but maybe it was right on the line? Well in any case you’ve got a better trans…same overdrive ratio in the big hole, almost the same lo-lo for the heavy and slippery stuff, and a ton less ratio spread in between. It’ll really help with mpg and speed in the hills. It seems like the big power engines like our 525 N14 or your cat benefit just as much from closer gear spacing as a little engine does if not more. The N14 used to have an 8LL behind it and even though the engine pulled super strong from 1400-1800 rpm because of the huge gaps between gears there were a lot of hills where you had to run it near 2100 because the next gear was just barely too high to keep it from lugging and bogging down so to keep up decent speed you were always a gear too low running it screaming and guzzling fuel or a gear too high lugging it to 1200 foot on the floor hoping the EGT’s didn’t hit 1,100 before you too the hill.
Yes sir i was surprised (and happy!) to see it also. It is a much better trans for hauling heavy. Thanks for the info on the numbers!
It is about the price
yes, if i had gotten it for 25k less, i wouldnt be upset at all!
You seem to have a handle on the electronics, if that’s the ecm from the original engine, is it going to ignore the present engine and give readings for the original, or is it going to give readings for the present engine? Thanks, take care and good luck.
I have to go through the harness and check all of the sensor part numbers to see if they are even the correct ones for the ecm. Great observation
I don't buy ANY vehicle without laying hands on it, and if I can't take a little ride in it I walk away, unless I'm buying a non runner that I plan on fixing
I have had good and bad luck honestly. First pete i bought was a great local truck, with a little oil leak. That little oil leak turned into an inframe rebuild, cost me 15K. Sometimes you win in this game sometimes you dont.
Did you ever hear of Ray Carpenter puller truck The Bounty Hunter I know him iwas at his shop his mec molded a housing put two turbos on that Cat engine it would rev to 5
O Tay buckwheat. Your the guy who always has a opinion, opposite of the conversation. Parents must of ignored you.
@@KA-om9oz I guess I watched a different video than you, the one I saw he said more than once how badly he got screwed. Or you believe it's really intelligent to buy shit without looking it over first
From what I saw looked like a good tractor. Did it really have oil in the coolant
Yes it does, just a little bit. May be remnants from previous repairs?
i paid 23 k for an auction 96 Int with n-14 with nice paint. Paint makes it what it aint
Good luck with it!
I'd be surprised if it has the original 8ll in it, that the low tq 8ll, I think the 1600ftlb one was a 1691b if I remember correctly, that's a odd setup with a 14k front and 20k tag . Surprised it doesn't have a 18 or 20k front cause it's a tri axle tractor. Single steering box?
yes single steering box, light front axle. 14/20/46 is pretty common where i'm from for a lowboy tractor
Does the unhooked speed sensor also log the milage on the truck???
No but it throws a check engine light
Those are some Stout trucks. My friend had one with a Cat engine. An that truck would pull up HELL.. Looking forward to seeing more videos of what u got planned for it an see it in action.. But i can say if that's oil in the radiator THAT'S NOT GOOD 😳🤦🏾♂️ we had a dump truck that was doing that an it end up Being a cracked head I hope it not anything that not fixable without u having to put to much money into it
Thanks 👍
It's clean for a 96, the double frame isn't all frame jacked
Fix that ground strap to computer if it's broken
I wonder if it had a head problem, they fixed it, painted the head and motor and never cleaned the radiator out? Wishful thinking until u run it and see what's happening
The wind blasted air cans give away the high miles, id say its probably 1.2mil
I think there is more to the story, i'm just not sure what yet.
Did you ad coolant first.
Yeah they just threw it BACK together enough for it to run for the auction an whoever Buys it.
With all the new polishes on the market, its showing it was made for a quick sale and yes its hurting inside somewhere as its got to more than just a oil cooler or something easy to remove an fix. I sure hope the cabin is not hiding a huge pile of rust that kills more nice cabins than anything. Rust jacking is not good but like you said, its all fixable. So do you let it make some money to pay for repairs or just tear it down now and redo everything from the fan clutch to the bellhousing
that is the ultimate question
@@jeremybishop9848 I would vote for a tare down as its usually something you can fix. Right now, short of a bad liner or broken piston (kinda think its that deep) parts are cheaper before one part eats the rest of what is still good.... wishing you the very best as I do like how a Western Star looks, thats part of why we drove em
I think it's a fine looking truck looking for some love. Maybe you can haul some milk and spill just a bit of it.
definitely needs some love but still a good base to build on
Get the green coolant out of it switch to red.
we definitely will do that. Im a firm believer in ELC.
Last real western star I learned in a 1994 as a teenager I drive 2019 now and it’s pure junk in every way diamler Benz focused to much on freightliner and really ruined the western star name in my opinion . First off you can’t get it with anything but a damn Mercedes engine with a Detroit emblem on it (dd13/dd15/dd16) all turds 💩
I dont disagree. I had a kelowna built 2002 4900 with a 475 cat, and LOVED that truck.
Water pump oil🤔🤤🤤🤤🤤
how much you pay bud?
way more than it's worth in it's present condition
Damn talk about what your looking at and why really!!!
Ok then what did you pay for it?? It’s an auction truck!! The steering probably just tighten the knuckle on steering box. Anything can be fixed!!!!!
I think the oil is what was left over after the head gasket was changed maby ,take the oil fill cap off see if water in the oil if not good to go ,,,,hey thinking positive for you brother I bought a Detroit lke that it was fine drain the oil off of the coolest before it runs a cycle on the thermostat mine ran another 800 thou no problems sound real good actually
Is the serial # on the engine the right one if not then it did get swapped
There is no serial tag on the engine itself, it has been removed. Thats the worst part. With a 5ek the injectors have to come out or the pan has to come off just to see what pistons are in it, aluminum or steel. Fortunately i think i have the original ecm to build from.
Try contacting kt3406e , he might give you some pointers on idling it
I’ve seen some of his content, he does really nice work
Wrong antifreeze in it, atomization while knock holes in sleeves
Still looks good ,looks like good bones
Thanks I think we can make it work
