  • part 1- I finally found one, and it looked really good in the pics. The auction was across the country so I rolled the dice. Not sure that was a smart move! Empty promises from the seller- surprise, surprise.

I bought a 1994 4864F off a guy sight unseen, talked with him alot on phone and he sounded truthful. Safe to say I'll never do that again there was a few issues, not to bad but bad enough to be several thousand dollars worth to fix and he clearly lied no doubt but that's what you get if you don't look yourself in person. Goodluck with your truck, hopfully there's not to much wrong, they are quite cool old rigs.

You really lucked out with it being swapped over to an 18 speed, that’s a really high cost proposition over an 8LL. Around here a good reman 16918 goes for $5,500 and up and the higher torque rated models are up in the $7-9k range. A reman’d 16908ll by comparison is in the $3,000 range. Really surprised that truck only had a 147 series trans in it, I’d think a 475 electronic 3406 would put out over the 1450 ft-lbs that 8ll was rated for but maybe it was right on the line? Well in any case you’ve got a better trans…same overdrive ratio in the big hole, almost the same lo-lo for the heavy and slippery stuff, and a ton less ratio spread in between. It’ll really help with mpg and speed in the hills. It seems like the big power engines like our 525 N14 or your cat benefit just as much from closer gear spacing as a little engine does if not more. The N14 used to have an 8LL behind it and even though the engine pulled super strong from 1400-1800 rpm because of the huge gaps between gears there were a lot of hills where you had to run it near 2100 because the next gear was just barely too high to keep it from lugging and bogging down so to keep up decent speed you were always a gear too low running it screaming and guzzling fuel or a gear too high lugging it to 1200 foot on the floor hoping the EGT’s didn’t hit 1,100 before you too the hill.

    • @jeremybishop9848

Is the serial # on the engine the right one if not then it did get swapped

There is no serial tag on the engine itself, it has been removed. Thats the worst part. With a 5ek the injectors have to come out or the pan has to come off just to see what pistons are in it, aluminum or steel. Fortunately i think i have the original ecm to build from.
