Josh the Adept Ape is top-notch. Also check out KT3406E for another great Cat truck engine mechanic. Good luck on your engine rebuild. You’re due some.
Yeah that guy knows his stuff.
I have been buying and repairing bikes, cars, and trucks for most of my 42 years on this earth, but I have NEVER had anything like this to deal with. Every bolt is either loose or broken or just plain wrong. Thanks for following along!
agreed! i watch them both and learn alot!
@@jeremybishop9848 I have some videos on my channel of a Wood-Mizer sawmill that I had for 23 years and sold to two guys about two years ago. One of them turned out to be an incredibly destructive idiot so he was pushed out of ownership by the other partner and I was tasked with getting the mill back in working order. They had it for just over a year. It took me five weeks of work to make the sawmill work again. So yeah - there are people out there who shouldn’t own wrenches.
I love the styling of these western star trucks. Can’t wait to see it back on the road, keep up the work
Thanks, will do!
It's amazing the unscrupulous people that sell trucks these days. That poor engine seen better days. I be flipping mad.
I'm definitely not thrilled! At this point all i can do is laugh, fix it, and share my experience with the world.
Unscrupulous people everywhere as America and the rest of the world continue to decay with worthless people....
Thats what I like about Jeremy's videos, there are some good and " normal " people still around.
Oh my ...lots of wear... now lots of work but you seem positive still. That helps me not get stressed out seeing this.
it's kind of like a treasure hunt for me now LOL
It will be easier to work on out of the truck and you can take your time and paint frame, whatever you want to do before putting it back in. Worth it in the long run.
thats the plan, thanks for watching!
Wondering why you were taking out the transmission.... OH yeah, I forgot about 3rd gear..... darn....
From the look of the motor I would venture the guy changed the original one for this junk one before sending it to auction. I've seen that before. At least your going about it in the right way. As long as the block is good you will be alright. If you plan on putting the truck back in service don't cut costs. Replace the worn parts and you should get another million miles out of it. Best of luck.
thanks, i think you are exactly right
Good luck with the re-build.
thank you!
@@jeremybishop9848 Looking forward to ypur videos on the re-build👍
That engine has run well over 1 million miles, maybe even 1.5, depending on how well the previous owners took care of it. (You can call the dealer & give them the VIN, and unless the truck is a glider, they'll be able to tell you what engine & serial number was in it from new.
I started to rebuild the C-15 in my Western Star this past Feb., but the entire engine - block, crank, and all, was trash, so we ended up building a totally new one. My engine had about 1.4 million since its first overhaul. (The truck had 2.3 million on it)
The head cracking is normal for high mileage Cats - my mechanic isn't happy with standard Cat heads: since it won't cost much more, get a performance head, a C-18 cam, and a non-wastgated turbo & a performance manifold: you'll be very pleased even if you don't turn up the power.
If it sti has the Cat engine brake heads, check them for cracks, as they're also prone to them with high mileage - and if you have the P-38(?) Brake heads, they're made of unobtanium, so there are no new ones.
Also! Check the rear engine mounting brackets! Some are steel, others are aluminum, and they can break. They ARE still available.
Pretty much everything for the truck is still available, HOWEVER - Daimler/Freightliner is lacking enthusiasm for supporting older trucks, so in order to find many parts through the dealer, you need a VIN for an identical 2003-2004 truck, because they changed many part numbers - but won't update the database for the older trucks!
Also, the parts database for older trucks is nowhere near as detailed as it is for the new trucks - and there's a LOT of Canadian terminology used, making parts harder to get in the States.
If you run into trouble with finding parts for the truck itself, and dealers in the States won't help, there's an "old timer" at the dealer in Calgary that'll help you.
Cat engine parts, except for the brake heads, shouldn't be a problem.
Thank you! For the truck side, i have a pretty good dealer close by that took on the challenge. Old school mom and pop dealership not the new corporate fellas down the street. The engine looks like it was a junkyard swap and they used the old ECM, so the real serial number is not available. Once we get it down to the block and see what it looks like we will decide what to do with the block. Hoping for the best.
@@jeremybishop9848 Anytime!
I keep forgetting you have a '96, so you have a narrow cab truck: some cab specific pieces may only be available through wrecking yards. Mechanically, everything on the chassis should be the same as newer trucks that had Cat engines.
If you ever need cab items, try VanDerHaags: aside from being a chain of wrecking yards, they get a lot of N.O.S. parts, that they blow out for cheap.
A few years ago, they had a sale on side steps: any length, for $30.00. My truck needed steps, and my truck uses the longest ones they made - 8'...still only $30.00 each, brand-new!
If you end up needing a radiator, have yours re-cored. Daimler switched Western Star over to the crappy aluminum radiators with plastic end caps - those things blow the cap seals whenever the weather changes, and I got the last new brass radiator for a 4900 that was in this hemisphere! (The only other one left, was located in Australia)
@jeremybishop9848 Whoa. Full stop. Sorry to be so late on this, but I’m just catching up on your saga. If by “real serial number is not available” you mean the hurt engine that came in the truck, maybe the sheet metal or stick on tags that came on the engine are missing, but the cast in or stamped in serial number on the block should still be there. You have experience with motorcycles. You should know this. If it is ground off, chances are good you are in possession of a stolen engine. If you put money in that block, it’s worse than throwing it away, because someone could come back on you later. Your seller is probably smoke in the wind, but the auction people are still around, and they make a big deal out of transferring paperwork. Good luck and take care.
i know that truck in its hay day saw some weight and tugging the hills out on Rt.93 in NH
from this and previous comments it was a lowbed tractor hauling some serious stuff all over new england? thanks for sharing. I love learning about the history of the trucks we have!
this engine is a cream puff lol compared to the ws I got a few years back
I pulled the pan after I drained the liquid inside and it was full of jelly inside the pan, engine, front cover etc.
pull the valve cover and it was a complete cake in there lol
took me a few hours just cleaning to find the head bolts.
ended up with a out of frame rebuild from dipping the block and there forward with new parts. 38,000 dollars later I had a truck.
yarn I started on the rest of the truck.....
you sir are in the same spot.
I learned then to do big jobs at once. Pull the blocks and start new from the fire wall forward. you'll save yourself all kinds of time and headache.
yuck!
Hi mate how are you getting on with this western star now, have you made much more progress?
Still working on it, parts have been slow to arrive, and we have been busy. Updates coming soon!
Is there any recourse against the Auction house? It was advertised as a " good " truck if I recall??
was a "great running truck, youll be super happy with it" and "ready for the road" when i inquired about the history. Maybe he meant the dirt road back into the junk yard? Jerks everywhere these days.
Are there Engine stands for these large diesels like car engines? If not how do you work on one of these when not an inframe?
Yes
yes but i do not have one. maybe i'll make one im not sure yet. time is tight right now
Its called undercoating lol!!!
putting the head back on the rebuilt short block today, stay tuned for more!
This poor ol girl was ran hard and not maintained well at all.
An old truck driving friend ran cats and he told me once there are orings in the heads that need to be replaced as maintenance..??
there are orings under the head but you would do a whole top end gasket set when a head gasket goes out, otherwise i wouldnt think you would replace them. its alot of work getting the head off of these things.
@@jeremybishop9848 Agreed, I did not mean that it was an easy job that only took a hook tool to remove some O rings..... LOL.. Just thought that might be where the coolant was coming from..
Did I see a cracked head on your video? You jumped by that part too quickly for my elderly mind..... LOL
@@ricksmith4736 yes we found a crack between the exhaust valves on #5 cylinder. I"m doing my best with the videos, i will keep that in mind for the future. That was 18 hours of footage i had to get down to 30 mins or so, LOL! Thank you for watching and for your input!!
@@jeremybishop9848 Not complaining, I enjoy your video's and you do a good job on them,, I guess I was thinking more along the lines of " Ah ha, looks like we found where the coolant was coming from"....
Will this require a new head??
@@ricksmith4736 yea, the head is toast. Apparently its common for these heads to break. We are currently trying to decide what to do about the rebuild with parts costs being so high and limited availability.
I'm quite open to suggestion on the videos as im very new to this and sometimes struggle with what to cut and what not to cut. I appreciate ANY input about what you want to see!!!
Typical Scatterpillar, if they aren't breaking cranks they are cracking heads
Seriously considering putting a green one in its place..
@@jeremybishop9848 I would if it was me, or go one step better and go with a red top N14, in my opinion that's the only engine better than a 60 series Detroit
I've seen a lean condition cause that. I don't know why anyone would want to jet a carb leaner, it never gives you more power. All that did was mess up your engine. Please, just leave it alone!!! Believe me, I know!
🤦🏻♀️
Make better life choices 🤣
I’m on the same page with my 01 4964ex with a 6nz 🫠 I need a cab to engine wiring harness to get back on the road and it has been a money pit
Theyre such great trucks, it's a shame people let things go so badly.
