  • In todays episode of 'Pictures On My Mind' I talk to London Documentary Photographer Roland Ramanan about his 10 year long form photo project 'Dominoes' shot in Gillett Square, Hackney, East London.
The project touches on many social issues including drug and alcohol abuse.
He had much help along the way and he talks about mentoring from the photographers Mimi Mollica and Stuart Freedman. Through the series he transitioned from street photographer to documentary photographer.
He also covers making the work, finding a publisher and collaborating with designer Vika Books and publisher Dewi Lewis.
You can crowdfund his book here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/... The deadline is the 12th November 2023.

Fabulous- I love Roland's curiosity, dedication and compassion. I always felt that social documentary work was scoffed at a little back when I studied photography but it's an important strand of photography and as valid as other approaches. Thanks for another inspirational video Edward. I work with moving images for a job but you have prompted me to get going with some personal work again and it feels good to be back!

Thanks for the kind words! Yes, if it wasn't for people like Roland doing these self initiated projects it makes you wonder what's left for future generations? The academics would cite the 1000s of photographs on social media as a reason why documentary is redundant but those 'highly curated' snaps are not the same as a commited photographer documenting one group explicitly. Go get em! Let me know how you're project goes.

Thanks so much for your kind words Gareth! If my work makes anyone look twice or get inspired it’s a great honour.

Hello again. I wonder how helpful it was that Roland has a benign appearance/persona, which probably led to people underestimating him until they become more familiar with his being in the area. Interesting to hear him questioning his ethics about the pictures he took, which doesn't appear on the radar of some photographers, and that translated into the compassion clearly on view in his images - the dps of the funeral for example. The photographs taken by, Jacob Holdt, in his book 'American Pictures' came to mind while looking at Roland's images. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

That was fab Ed. Great to open your followers up to Roland and his fine looking project. Kickstarter next stop, will be a worthy inclusion in my swelling library. PS. No matter what Mr Hutson said, i think you are an engaging interviewer. And, as you pointed out, this was only your 2nd attempt. Of course there are skills to learn. No wincing here, just doffing of cap as running a yt channel is highly time consuming ✊🏼 keep it coming, i am learning much
