hats off to grigor for playing one of the best tournaments of his life, re-entering the top 10, and setting himself up as one of the best players in the world. it took the best of the best to put him down. im really disappointed to see that a lot of people were doubting sinner's form after indian wells (as if there's anything wrong with losing in the semis to one of the best players in the world at arguably his favorite tournament). people have been unfair to him (and carlos) and moving goalposts. mainstream fans dusted him off because he had no slam and now that he does, they make up more excuses to slander him. jannik is one of the genuine guys on tour. he isnt as energetic as other guys but he still doesnt put up a facade. he gives time to members of the tennis community and is super respectful on and off the court. his rise hasnt been as meteoric or as fast as others, but his run to this level has shown so much resilience and grit. he has truly learned from his losses, arguably more rewarding to have it this way anyways.
that being said, miami is a court that suits his style very well and even though he lost as the favorite in IW, i still had him winning miami fairly easily. jannik is becoming more and more like djokovic with the sliding backhands and ability to level up as the tournament goes on, but he also has so much more power. ridiculous stuff.
even though clay is his least favorite surface, he has had some great results in the past (b2b french open qfs where he lost to rafa and qf/semis in monte carlo). with his newfound form being leaps and bounds above what he was, i have little doubt that he will earn far more points than he did in his last clay season. winning a big clay title seems very likely for him right now. excited to see skilled clay court players who havent quite gotten the results they've wanted (ruud, rune, novak, tsitsipas, medvedev) step it up on the dirt. this is looking to be a very interesting clay swing.
