5 runouts an innings, batsmen having no fucking clue what they’re doing, no concept of milking singles. You glorify it but reality is players were just dumb as fuck back then.
I grew up with cricket, the nostalgia is real. It's a shame cricket isn't what it used to be, sports in general aren't required viewing like they once were.
Mark Waugh could be very sharp as a medium pacer, I saw some speed guns at around 135km/h at times and I recall him saying he had been clocked quicker than paceman Physco @ Holdsworth from NSW
Watching the death overs in early to mid 90s cricket is like watching a Benny Hill skit. Batsmen have no idea how to milk singles or manipulate the field, they throw their wickets away with diabolical shots and the stupidest run outs you will ever see. There is no way you should lose needing 12 off 18 with 4 wickets in hand. These guys were inexperienced, they panicked, they played like amateurs. It’s amazing it took so long for Michael Bevan to pop up and show guys that you can make runs without trying to hit 5 sixes in a row when needing 30 off the last 10 overs.
Windies were 2 down for plenty and cruising home when Mark Taylor (filling in as captain for an injured Allan Border) threw Mark Waugh the ball in the 39th over. It was just out of hope maybe to give his 6th bowler a few overs. Mark just kept taking wickets so he stayed on. Steve used to always bowl the death overs.
The Waugh twins Mark and Steve bowling in the death overs is quite a rare scene.Best part of all that this strategy won the match for Australia vs Windies cricket team while defending a small total of 198 runs.
The MCG had just been resurfaced at the time, and had more sand on it than a quarry. The only player in that match who regularly managed to reach the boundaries easily enough was Richie Richardson. He also took the slow outfield out of play a few times by hitting the ball at least 90 metres over the fence. There were no boundary ropes back in those days either, you could only hit a 6 by hitting the ball over the fence. Richardson put the West Indies in a winning position with his lusty hitting, but shortly before this video he got out to what Bill Lawry described at the time as the catch of the season. It was no surprise that his team folded more easily than a deck of cards after his dismissal.
Cricket Station 24, what went wrong that Steve & Mark Waugh got dropped in 2002 from Australia odi side & never played wc 2003 & odi for Australia, please let me know.
I believe they were dropped because Australia failed to qualify for the VB Triangular Series of 2001-2002 featuring SA and NZ. I guess the Aussie selectors felt the Waugh twins at 36-37 were too old to be a part of the WC 2003 squad build-up. I remember Mark Waugh was permanently replaced by Matthew Hayden at the top of the order and Steve Waugh was replaced by Darren Lehmann in the middle order of the ODI team. I know both Hayden and Lehmann were part of the ODI squads earlier but they kind of cemented their spots after the Waugh twins were dropped. As a cricket fan, I was so upset that they were dropped but the immediate result was the new AUS ODI squad under Ponting blanked SA 5-1 in the 7 match ODI series in South Africa.
Arthurton in my living memory hardly ever contributed towards a win. He and Logie were the weakest links in the name of specialist batsmen in WI History but while Logie in the pre Johnty era was the best fielder to ever grace the ground, Arthurton was plain useless. How he survived for that long only suggests the lows that WI domestic was experiencing back then. Had Lara had one more depndable flamboyant batsman WI could have carried their legacy well into the 2000's
The Waugh's are 10km at least quicker than the best in Women's cricket. The Waugh's had very good bouncers and weren't scared to bounce the best batsmen in the world.

Cricket was at its best at this point. Even the commentary was far superior.
Alyssa’s uncle was a very good wicket keeper.
Big grounds, tooth pick like bats. Terrific contest between bat and ball. 90s era when 200 used to be a fighting total.
And those lightning bolt uniforms, Loved em!
Yes , after 2000 odi became totally batsman game

O-50 after the first 15 overs was considered a good start.

So funny how Tugga was more annoyed that his LBW appeal against Arthurton was turned down, than he was happy Ambrose was run out. 😂😂
I thought that too. Maybe he wanted the better batsman’s wicket? Not very good sportsmanship from SW
Australia always playing smart cricket.. they remain calm and cool under challenging situation makes them an expectional team
Bill Lawry what a legend!
Got him, yes! Piss off your out! Magnificent bowling, and he's a Victorian!

Both the players are matching winner one of the best twin brothers in the international cricket

Great pair of brothers Steve & mark Waugh...
Yes, and both homosexual which is a statistical oddity.

Incredible. If they lost it would feel like a terrible decision to have them bowl... But they destroyed. Crazy.

What a great Aussie side, the Waugh brothers - great exponents of tight and varied medium pace.
Great video. I tell you what though, no wonder Billy Birmingham took the piss out of Bill Lawry so much. He was spot on.
I miss these types of atmospheres at one day cricket
Mark Waugh's best ODI bowling performance and he top scored for Australia with 57

Bill Lawry. What a beauty you are. Pure class😊
Healy was ridiculous throwing with that much accuracy with the glove on.
Classic Bill Lawry and the Waugh brothers ... add Warnie to the mix and it just doesn't get any better
Great to see this footage again. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it
Mark Waugh bowling medium pace was rare ! 😮
He bowled seam up a lot when he was younger, and he had a reputation as being pretty quick in county cricket.
@@paulcadwell2568 Oh ! That's something not many would've known. Thanks!
I think both Waugh bros got struck down with stress fractures which is why they gave up the bowling.
They both used to love bowling bouncers
Omg thanks for sharing mate!! Loved the waugh brothers and Dean Jones.
That was bloody good work from Healy!
Curtly's run out in this match very similar to the 1996 WC SF
Didn't realize mark bowled medium. I always remember him bowling offies
It would have been not long after this he changed to off spin, around ‘92/‘93. From memory is was because of a back issue
Only west indies selectors knows why keith atherton had a long career ....his performance in 96 wc was disastrous still he played for windies till 99
I was at this game. It started off slowly, but geez it had a great ending.
Ohh the good old days
A team of cricket legends in this one
And the Umpires can call a run out without referring to a 3rd Umpire

Crazy how things change. Almost guarantee that last ball would’ve been creamed for 6 today. It was right in the slot.
The crowd was just like this at the mcg last year against England during Head and Warners record opening partnership
Can't half tell that they're twins, given how similar their bowling actions are. 😂
very nice ❤
Watching this I have to ask; What the hell happened to Australia and cricket in general since these days???
Back when cricket was talented. Not sandpaper wannabe’s like today :(
Dnt know how but Australia always find way to win matches from jaw of defeat 🎉
That is why they are six time world cup champions

Great before the joke of 20/20 came in.
It's funny to think that this sort of pace is comparable with the fastest bowling that women face in women's cricket.

If the Waugh's bowled in women's cricket they have them all out inside 15 overs and I reckon Mark would have knocked one out with concussion
