this is one of the many reasons why Sachin was termed as God of cricket... dekho akela banda ek side pakad ke khel raha hai aur baki sabki line lagi padhi hai... he fought all alone in so many occasions... remember those Sharjah days, tour to South Africa, Australia, New Zealand in early 90's, same old story... it was only after Dravid and Ganguly came to his support in late 1996 and Indian Team started to transform to "Team India"....slowly

@@hopes2002 Mark Waugh was Australia's premier ODI batsman of the 1990's and he was Australia's no.2 Test batsman of the 1990's. He was Australia's leading run scorer of the 1990's in both forms of the game. The only two things missing from his Test career is the big double 100 and red ink scores. He tended to get out when he done his job. His ODI record is remarkable but he spent a lot of his career early on coming in the later overs trying to score quickly after the top 3 consumed most of the deliveries. If he went to opener much sooner his record in ODI's be even better. Australia might have made the semis in 1992 World Cup if they used him how NZ used Greatbatch but Australia was still playing a 1980's style. If he had a different surname he wouldn't have to endure ridiculous and obsessive comparisons when he was a very special player who was a match winner and the big wicket for the opposition in big games. Do yourself a favour and get the book called Waughlock by Brendon McConville. It's a real gem that unlocks how great Mark Waugh really was.

I've got to say, especially in the early to mid 90s, if Tendulkar didn't play well India was done. Till Dravid, Ganguly and Laxman got established a little later in the decade, he was single-handedly carrying the team's batting. Gavaskar had similar problems as well in his time.
I get that you're comparing them purely in terms of style/technique, but Tendulkar's achievements were uniquely impressive given that Mark Waugh had massive backup in that Australian side. Alan Border overlapped with him. Tubbs and Tugga were great batsmen. Ponting and Langer overlapped with him towards the end.
On paper, India had Azharuddin and Jadeja, but they never seemed to pick up the slack if Tendulkar got out in a match that counted.

1996 cricket world cup is the most unique world cup ever played among the 19 cricket world cups till date ( including 7 T20 world cups). Below are few facts :
    1. Only world cup to be won by a co-host nation. Sri Lanka won final in Lahore and not on home soil
    2. Only final in which both captains were left handed batsman
    3. Only final match to be held in pakistan
    4. Pakistan is the only country which hosted a world cup final without hosting a semi final match !!!!
    5. Only final to have a century in a success full chase. Arvinda di silva scored 107.
    6. Only time world cup trophy was handed over by head of a state. Benazir bhutto the then PM of Pakistan handed over the trophy to arjuna ranatunga.
    7. 1996 world cup is the only tournament in which both finalists despite being in the same group never faced each other in earlier stages of the tournament. Australia did not go to sri lanka for its pool game due to security reasons and sri lanka was given 2 default points
    8. Arvinda di silva is the most productive man of match player with 107 runs 3 wickets n 2 catches
    9. Sanath jayasurya is the least productive all rounder to win player of series award
    10. Only world cup final among the 4 final match appearances of Glen McGrath where he went wicketless
    11. Only 50 over world cup match till date in which sri lanka beat Australia
    12. Only World cup when India played at Eden Gardens Calcutta in 50 over world cup !!!!
    13. Only 50 over world cup in which West indies lost a semi final match
    14. 1996 was the last time West indies reached semi final stage in 50 over world cup
    15. Ind vs Sri Lanka semi final, only test or odi in history which was awarded due to rioting crowd !!
    16. Only World Cup in sub continent when India did not host the final match.
    17. Only World Cup final in which Glen McGrath and Shane warne went wicketless
    18. Only World cup where all semi finalist belonged to same group
    19. Ony World Cup final where Glen McGrath, Shane Warne and Ricky ponting were on the losing side
    20. Only World Cup where the opening match did not have any of the host nations
