This was the era when 1 ball was used throughout the match. Batting was much more difficult once the ball got soft.
Swing was also for lesser overs man as only one new ball was used.. that time in test cricket always 500 600 were scored more often.. nowadays its difficult to score even 350.. there were more flatter pitches at that time with most matches being drawn

That is more myth than factual, BCCI started getting uber rich from early 2000s onwards when they started giving broadcasting rights to private broadcasters, Sachin was there since 1990, major money would flow from 2000 onwards.
