This channel is like a half assed hiking channel mixed with a half assed photography channel mixed with a half assed travel channel. I literally can’t imagine how it could get any better
I really enjoy the break down on each roll of film you have added into your latest videos. really enjoy every video you do, i hope you dont stick to your idea to one video a month in your podcast, though i understand why you would, keep it up Jason your vidoes are truly inspirational
Love the breakdown of keepers / portfolio shots you are doing now in your videos! I have started looking at every roll I shoot with that mindset and it has really helped me narrow down the aspects I like in my photos.
The Hasselblad is the fastest camera to load. But then again as a swed I was of course born with a A12 back in one hand and a C12 in the other. Love, love, the redscale images. They are fire!
What’s so great about your videos is that interspersed within the humour are some really great tips, for example the advice to use the yellow filter to add a little more contrast on the photo of the buried house
I don't mean to attack your decision, but why would you shoot 4x5, and then diffuse it, if you do not want the extra sharpness it offers? Isn't that one of the main points of shooting it over 120 or 35mm?
You are brave to enter those broken buildings, I am afraid of going in for the uncertainty of falling cellings and potential bad guys in the buildings.
Wow, those images at the start are so good! Lomo Redscale is so good. Loved my roll I shot last year and def need to shoot again. Those redscale images are insanely good and that walking blur shot is very cool. WOW 7:15 Hass bw shots at 1600 are solid.
I admire you for having figured out how to use the grafmatic backs. Mine seemed more trouble than it was worth so eventually I just used regular film holders which is what I used when I started to shoot 4x5.
That left most Roy photo is probably my fave of the film shots I've seen of that sign. I like it because it is more "complete" sort of feels like an environment while the right one, yes, is dark and moody I think feels a little too empty with the darkness. Plus, I think left most composition and lighting is more Hopper esque. Thanks for the video!
at 12:10 there is just something about that photo that is just awesome to me. That has to be one of my favorite indoor environment photos I have ever seen. There is something about the way the light is hitting the chair closer to the camera that makes it feel fake like its painted somehow but I know that its real. Awesome work.
I work as a construction consultant & several years ago I was inspecting an abandoned 18 story hotel in New Orleans when I came to a room where I opened a closet door with a frightened homes person. We both were quite surprised & didn't want him to freakout so I told him don't worry I won't tell anyone you are here. Then the next day I was inspecting with one of the owner's reps & as we went by a room I said to the rep there is a dead body in there. If you know that smell you never forget it. We were not able to access the room but latter they did gain access & there was a dead person. For me abandoned buildings are not something I do for fun!
If the tones are too cool you can warm them up during scanning. No color negative image is created without color correction. Even when making analog prints you need to dial the colors in the way you want. 800T can look just as warm as Gold.
Just a thought, but if you find the 4x5 lens you've got is too sharp, maybe try an antique lens with less resolving power like a Petzval or an older Kodak lens? Just really lean into that hipster anachronism we all know and love as film shooters. 😁 I reckon uncoated glass and a simpler lens formula might just give you more of that more dreamy look you're going for, and there's plenty of cheap lenses like that on Ebay, etc so you're not losing much if what you get turns out to be shite. Also I'm loving the redscale shots you've been doing recently! Either it's Blade Runner 2049 or I'm expecting to find Matt Damon farming potatoes just out of frame, but either way the shots look cool as fuck.
First, I was almost in tears from the opening humor. Then the redscale shots. Awesome!!! Now I see some more of the sand dune that Caleb showed. Great post all around. Nice putting the identical shots on different film next to each other, facilitating easy comparison. What was it that activated your adrenaline? Lastly, thanks for the food shot, it looked good. As I said to Caleb, you do a good food channel on the side.
Accept it -it’s the Hassy and not the BBQ. Have the 500c and just love the pictures from that camera. Some of my best. Just joined the Pentax 6x7 club. What a beast! And got it at a garage sale for $5.
ever considered heading out to the Cerro Gordo mining town to shoot some film? I think it'd be neat, even if it is now some very well known abandoned stuff (or now re-inhabited stuff)
Weird, I just shot that location in Baker, CA. As well. I used CineStill 50d tho - totally agree with you about the graffiti being so uninspiring when shooting this location. Wished I would've gone inside the hotel but honestly wasn't in the mood to potentially fight a desert tweaker to the death that day.
So the only time I seem fold laundry is when I'm watching a GrainyDays episode. I'm gonna need you to go ahead and create more content because I'm a wrinkly mess when there's large gaps in time.
this channel has taught me a lot like, how to carry heavy equipment around for shitty photos and that BBQ is best to eat if youre constipated but what I really have taken away recently is how he chooses his "keepers" and "portfolio" shots. gets me thinking about how i should organize what are keepers and what should go on my website. also I dont remember seeing any flaming hot Mountain Dew chugging. does that mean areochrome is back?
I really dug this video. Great comments on the photos. I just have to say, I quite often disagree with you on which of your shots are good. So many of the ones you dislike are not objectively bad.
I got some nice shots out at that Desert Research Facility That You Mentioned. I was a geo student, so I was allowed to play there. To get splashes of light, you should try the lava tubes out there.
I just tried some redscale myself recently. Interesting. I used Redrum from lomo which is 800T. My results were more yellow than I expected but I think it is because there is no remjet layer. I may try it again with a regular film to see if I get better redscale instead of yellows.
Have you tried netting lenses on digital cameras vs using promist? is it a cool alternative to bringing some vintage looks into digital at all? I was inclined to try maybe pairing a vintage lens + netting on a digital sensor to see how it turns up...
Hey Jason……I’m heading out to Vegas tomorrow, can you recommend anywhere around there where I may be able to pick up some Cinistill 800T in 35mm? Couldn’t find any in LA at all.
Man, that photo at 5:20 is smoking hot. Do you know the music by Godspeed you! Black Emperor? (yes, it's the band name). I feel like that photo totally belongs to the atmosphere on their debut F#A# infinity
21:23
"are people really coming to hang out here"
*is hanging out there*

That's like 1.5 full asses of effort
you had me til the last sentence 😅
“Banging at the back door for sweet release” hahaha what a wordsmith
patrolling the mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter
When I got this assignment I was hoping there would be more gambling.
I just lost a months worth of caps.
Could be worse...you could have taken an arrow to the knee.
We won’t go quietly, legion can count on that.
Real grainy days fans only watch these videos while having a difficult time on the toilet
Frome either BBQ or Taco Bell
I really enjoy the break down on each roll of film you have added into your latest videos. really enjoy every video you do, i hope you dont stick to your idea to one video a month in your podcast, though i understand why you would, keep it up Jason your vidoes are truly inspirational
Man, your soundtrack choices in this video were insanely good! It added a lot to the atmosphere tothe environments.
This is the most elaborate brokeback mountain account I've ever seen, and look everywhere for those. Good job guys.
Jason is so lucky he gets to be Caleb's passenger princess 😮💨
What’s so great about your videos is that interspersed within the humour are some really great tips, for example the advice to use the yellow filter to add a little more contrast on the photo of the buried house
Also bring back Kodachrome, momma
That music combined with the dope-ass shots near Roy’s has a thriller movie vibe, gave me goosebumps. Really nice music choice, what a sequence!
I don't mean to attack your decision, but why would you shoot 4x5, and then diffuse it, if you do not want the extra sharpness it offers? Isn't that one of the main points of shooting it over 120 or 35mm?
taking pictures at the mojave almost makes you wish to switch to digital
The sand dunes location looks like the album art cover for Tame Impala- The Slow Rush.
04:43 the one on the right is the one for me. Really like the light reflecting on the car.
A pleasure to watch. Great shots. I live up here in the desert and when I go out, I am always on the lookout for you two guys. Thanks.
4:41 something about the glow of the horizon just takes the first (left) shot to another level. Just fantastic.
Nice to hear Jason actually liking his work in this video
Thanks for letting me tag along. Looked fun.
The garage wall aesthetic of the studio is more jarring than the hair, but other than the lack of Baxters the content was excellent.
You are brave to enter those broken buildings, I am afraid of going in for the uncertainty of falling cellings and potential bad guys in the buildings.
Man oh man, those videos of your are really fun! Easy going and atmospheric at the same time! Keep it up! Thank's for all the free eye candy!
The buried building shots really reminded me of the cover of Tame Impala's The Slow Rush
Same, literally the first thing I thought when I saw it. 💪🏻
Dude, these redscale shots are all Banger McSlammers.
The red scale photos remind me of Blade Runner 2049
I gotta say, I've really enjoyed the long-form videos
I'm digging the redscale, it sorta has this apocalyptic vibe to it. Also, the B/W shot from zzyxx rd would have been awesome on redscale.
20:08 My favourite photographer @NickCarver also took several shots for this building!
Another gem from the scatalogically inspired Crown Prince of downbeat Lo-fi film dialog
Wow, those images at the start are so good! Lomo Redscale is so good. Loved my roll I shot last year and def need to shoot again. Those redscale images are insanely good and that walking blur shot is very cool. WOW 7:15 Hass bw shots at 1600 are solid.

The redscale shots look amazing. Reminds me of Blade Runner
Gonna need an aerochrome alternative update asap
Love your longer videos so much. Your personality and character are questionable but the longer videos rock. Love you Mr Grainy

It should be the left one, 100%. Astonishing photo, man.

Great video, loved the redscale photos! Especially the first roys sign shot🤩🔥
Babe wake up Jason finally posted again
Beautiful composition. Simple and very balanced. 17:29
Thank you for sharing so many good photos and so much useful information.

I just drove to Palm Springs from Utah. Love stopping at Roy's. Wish my pictures looked half as good as these lol
I need to try that technique of putting a swinging bag on my tripod while taking exposures. 😂
He has pegboards now, he’s growing stronger and stronger.
If the tones are too cool you can warm them up during scanning. No color negative image is created without color correction. Even when making analog prints you need to dial the colors in the way you want. 800T can look just as warm as Gold.
Zzyzx is a beautiful spot there’s some unoccupied buildings at the back with the lakebed in the background amazing story behind the place as well
I usually don’t like redscale, but every single one of those was a certified banger.
Was at Roy's last month and shot some Kodak Color Plus. wish the sign was on while driving back. Great video!
Channeling Jason Lee with the 4x5 and that stylish hat.
But for real, another banger
Amazing as always
Glad to find this video! I was wondering where you were. Always fun to see y'all out there shooting film.
Probably your best video i have watched

"To baldly go where no one has gone before." 😂 Your hair has abandoned ship but don't worry about it: it's a lot easier to take care of this way.
that redscale slaps so hard
the photos you shared here have totally convinced me that I need to shoot some redscale immediately.
Am I really here this early? Always a treat to see a new episode.
@14:58 is the winner in my black heart.
Accept it -it’s the Hassy and not the BBQ. Have the 500c and just love the pictures from that camera. Some of my best. Just joined the Pentax 6x7 club. What a beast! And got it at a garage sale for $5.
Always love your videos, great music in this one
Currently recovering from the concussion I suffered when I fell off my chair when I heard this video was not sponsored by Squarespace
wow these might be some of my favorite images of yours to date. love the one at 16:44, its so dystopian and I can't stop looking at it!
That one looks crazy good!
ever considered heading out to the Cerro Gordo mining town to shoot some film? I think it'd be neat, even if it is now some very well known abandoned stuff (or now re-inhabited stuff)
the amount of train horn goes by in this video makes me cackle

Wished I would've gone inside the hotel but honestly wasn't in the mood to potentially fight a desert tweaker to the death that day.
I want to have the confidence Jason has while shooting a piece of cement
Lol. Them old Toyota's do that. Had to hammer the starter longer than I should have.
So the only time I seem fold laundry is when I'm watching a GrainyDays episode. I'm gonna need you to go ahead and create more content because I'm a wrinkly mess when there's large gaps in time.
Came for the photos and video. Stayed for the sound design.
I would love for you to do a video on how you guys find these locations. They're so cool.
I love the 4/3rds format
Yup, some very good photos at Roy's.
Please tell me what's the 4*5 camera in your video ?
this channel has taught me a lot like, how to carry heavy equipment around for shitty photos and that BBQ is best to eat if youre constipated but what I really have taken away recently is how he chooses his "keepers" and "portfolio" shots. gets me thinking about how i should organize what are keepers and what should go on my website. also I dont remember seeing any flaming hot Mountain Dew chugging. does that mean areochrome is back?
You must have blinked. It was quick.
@@mikejankowski6321 that’s what i get for watching and working at the same time

I just gotback east from being out that way. I def should have shot more black and white. Hoping my 4x5 portra on roys comes out ok
There's something wrong with the people that see an abandoned home and think, yeah let's destroy this because...?
The sand in the building photos 😘👌 As for the others some are great too, some are keepers. Great video 2x👍
Awesome work, Jason Schwartzman as a photographer from the new film by Wes Anderson “Asteroid City”. 👍🏻
no baxter appearances refund plz
Anybody knows which 45 camera is he using?
babe wake up, grainydays just posted a new video
Man's liked halations so much he shot only halations
Jason, nice video. I don't recognize the viewfinder atop of your Graflex. I'm interested in this. Please advise. Thanks!
Man, that photo at 5:20 is smoking hot. Do you know the music by Godspeed you! Black Emperor? (yes, it's the band name). I feel like that photo totally belongs to the atmosphere on their debut F#A# infinity
Those redscale shots ooooo 👌 👌 👌
Goddamnit Toyota Land Cruiser! Would’ve been so awesome to see pics of that bad boy in the desert
Sweet redscale! Great video, thanks for sharing!
I think the fake new Rolleiflex has a better chance of returning before Kodachrome 🤷♂️
I love the 4:3 so much, makes for a great viewing experience on 16:10 screen
A lot of nice shots! And you are looking very Ansel Adamsesque in that hat.
This was awesome.
