I water fasted for more than a month. I’m 17 and I don’t know how I got away with it, living with my parents. I suppose my parents were worried but it’s not like they could shove food down my throat. I still can’t believe I did it to this day. I was really insecure in myself at the time and wanted to prove something to my ex-boyfriend... the strangest thing about the whole experience was how obsessive I became during that time. I became obsessed with certain people and as well every single day I would look at food I craved, it was almost filling the void I suppose. I was very physically weak, I could walk but not at a fast pace and not for long. Despite the physical weakness I wanted to keep going, because subconsciously I felt it was the only control I had in my life - every other aspect was a wreck. I felt superior to others in that sense because of my self-control at the time. Another effect it had, my perceived image of beauty was really distorted during it, it became like an anorexic’s. I always thought a healthy curvy figure with some meat was beautiful, but the further I went into this challenge for myself the thinner I wanted to be. I wanted a thigh gap, I wanted the bones of my rib cage to show, I wanted my butt to be really small. uhm. 8 hours is a normal sleep cycle... anybody could sleep for 8 hours without eating... it should be 16 hours of fasting. And for 8 hours you should be eating 2-3 meals within the 8 hour period. Source: improvement pill intermittent fasting
I water fasted for 8 days, took vitamin tablets every day. The most dangerous part is the lack of potassium. It’s possible to get other electrolytes from different waters, but its not possible to get enough potassium from water
For sure, it worries me that a lot of people think that water fasting means water and literally nothing else, but you're meant to take supplements to replenish your electrolytes throughout the fast. Going 3+ days without topping the big three up (sodium, potassium and magnesium) gets very dangerous. A teaspoon of lo or lite salt (50/50 sodium/potassium) diluted into your water through the day and a magnesium citrate supplement are the simplest ways to get them.
@@soosoolar water fasting is actually very healthy, what the media tells you about losing weight is all a lie. Don't be a sheep and do your own research
Hey please be carful because with these types of videos I can’t imagine how easy it would be to fall bad into ED habits, sending love from Scotland 💞🏴
I have done 5,7,10,15 day fasts everytime i felt better than ever bit it takes a lot of research and medical supervision. Next up is a 40day fast. I hope i dont die!😂
@Gal Horowitz I'd rather suffer a few weeks than try a caloric restriction diet for months and months that fails 99% of the time. I have never regained my fat after a fast but always after caloric restriction. Once i hit that plateau it's all over for me. With fasting and keto i've managed to break through them without much hassle.
@Gal Horowitz first 3 days are the hardest so why give up after they are over now that im fat adapted i can fast any time i like without having any issues its great
In Germany we actually have clinics for fasting! My own doc recommended fasting to me and said an extended 30day fast once a year is very healthy! There is actually a lot of research regarding fasting in Germany! Maybe try google translate
My church club used to encourage fasting :/ i was like 10-12yrs old and they'd invite us (just children) to fast for a weekend i never went i like food to much, i left the church club shortly after they told me id be going to hell for going out trick or treating 😂
I go to church and fast and did as a kid too. Never developed any bad habits from it or had any health problems from it. Fasting for 1-2 days, even for kids, seems fine to me and I was fine when I did it at that age as well. It definitely should be supervised by a parent though. And fasting for kids could mean just not eating any snacks and having a small meal those 2 days. But yeah I get why it would seem wierd to some people and it should always be something the child wants as well. (Fasting for religious purposes) So you don't want to do it, you shouldn't have too.
My friends at the time (10-12) did this for 8 days. Parental agreement. I joined it because of curiosity and I ended up with an eating disorder mostly because of how I felt/looked and it defiantly sucked major ass and I'm still dealing with an ed so oof. Psa. It literally was like. One meal a day and basically it was bread.
I was reading it helps with the diabetes. I was diagnosed like 4 months ago but the insulin makes me so hungry at 4 am so i don't think I could fast. 😂
@@aidinvega3300 i get that same hungryness in periods where I overeat or eat too much carbs. If I ignore it it goes away by itself and it disappears with my normal diet. Ps I don't have diabetes so please before attempting anything talk to your doctor. The only thing I know it's safe diet wise with diabetes is to reduce the amount of carbs in the diet while adjusting the insulin intake accordingly.
Me: *suffers of migraines 365 days a year and sometimes can't get out of bed for an entire a week and can't eat anything*.... Oh so it's called waterfasting now??
Yeah a lot of people have told me this, but I don’t know if I have the strength to do a longer fast. I’m quite slim and it would literally eat at my muscle which I’m not massively keen on. But I did mention that there are benefits!! I would rather be too cynical than too optimistic as i don’t necessarily want to encourage something that could be dangerous x
I actually water fasted for 2 days then 1 regular 1000-1500 cal day then repeat till I got my ideal weight it was good Only problem was cravings not hunger pains those were non existent just craving were like controlling me I was looking at veggies.. I hate veggies lol
@@icedmocha5264 please don't. it might get you to lose some weight but it's not safe or healthy and bad in the long run. you're much better off just eating healthier and exercising a few times a week
Yall you aren't learning healthy benefits. That's why you shouldn't not eat for days, it's not going to teach you the ways to eat healthy. If you slowly change your lifestyle and learn how to eat healthy you will make positive changes for life. This is why crash diets don't work. Often participants gain back the weight plus more. If you have real problems with weight see a therapist or nutritionist instead of doing crash diets. Even ellbat literally tells you not to do it for weight loss, she says how dangerous it is for anyone so if anyone is going to try this get a medical expert to look after to you.
i know you probably get this a lot but please stay safe when doing these diets, hearing about your past eating struggles and seeing these get me worried bc i know where you're coming from and i would hate for you (or anybody else) to go through such a horrible thing :( ❤️
I LOVE water fasting. I started for health and spiritual reasons and it's something I still fall back on whenever I am feeling particularly crappy or lost in life. I saw that you felt really tired when you did it. I'm the opposite. I actually get really manically energetic when I fast, so much so I have a harder time getting to sleep. I'm not a scientist but my body absolutely feels better after a fast. I feel lighter and since I have so much free time when I'm not eating it usually makes me super productive. I can see how having a past ED would cause negative emotions to come up during a fast though. It must have brought up pain bodies for you. When you have a past ED it makes complete sense you would view it more as self punishment/starving. Thank you for making this even though it must have been so uncomfortable. You inspired me to do a fast starting Monday. I need the spiritual zen I get from it, lol.
Thank you for sharing your experiences! I agree with you. As someone with no history of ED, is relatively healthy, and has done her research, I am all with you for doing water fast! Of course there are things to pay attention to (hydration level, electrolytes, how our body feels, etc.) but human bodies are incredibly resilient and I do believe fasting in general can benefit people who are struggling with the effects of modern diet (aka being insulin-resistant and carbs-dependent). It is definitely NOT for everybody, but it is also actually VERY possible to do water fast in a safe manner and reap the benefits of it (be it autophagy, increased insulin sensitivity, clearer mind, weight loss, etc.) 😊
Am I the only one who never forgets to drink 2 litres of water a day 😂 I LOVE drinking colddddd water every few hours I just feel so thirsty always (but I always need the loo lmao)
@@Ellbat to be honest I fast for at most 18 hrs a day without eating or drinking for a month every year as it is part of my religion for 4 years now and I'm only 16
Did a 3 week water fast when I was 37. Walked for 2 sessions of 2 hours each day at a fast/moderate pace; Exercise included weight-lifting of reduced sets and weights around 50% of typical. Drank Smart Water (water + salts), ensuring I always had sip bottle on my person and tracked amount drunk each day. The biggest issue I faced was jaw ache from under use and energy levels like an old battery you've just charged - max juice for a fraction of the time. I agree totally about highlighting various dangers and questioning reasons / exit point, but... your experience was way off. You experienced the worst of the first few days of carb cravings, your body was geared to fuel from the contents of your stomach and initiate complaints before it was actually empty (food is still providing energy until it's passed through the gut and...). After a few days you'd have switched over to Ketosis and the body would be able to derive the glucose the brain and muscles require from ketones - headaches stop, cravings reduced considerably. Considered going for a round month, but decided that mixing my experiment with driving wasn't worth the risk to myself or others. There's absolutely no way I could have done it, without the walking, both for diversion and fresh air when feeling nausea. What it gave me was an appreciation of what hunger is and our ability to persist.
I can’t wait for the day I’ll be able to say “I used to be anorexic”. I can’t wait for when I’m considered recovered. I love you ellbat, thank you for always making me feel better

You have very low fat stores. 24 hours is fine for anyone at a healthy place, and is a good 'break' for your body. Water fasting longer than that would not be recommended for you. There are a couple documentaries and studies done on fasting. No one pays for the studies cause it doesn't benefit any companies ie. the food companies (empire). It is extremely minimalist.
i love how you are spreading awareness and as someone with an ed, i think you did a wonderful job 💜 diet culture is so damaging and i wish health was more of a priority than losing weight. it would save a lot of lives.
I did that years ago and i just got insulin resistance :(, it's good to have a RUclipsr like you that not onli says "miracle diet, its good or safe", you make research about it, so good, Greetings from Chile ♡ take care.
@@Ellbat insulin resistance is like a pre-diabetes, but this makes you to have high levels of insulin, some people have high levels of glucose in their blood Because of that but for me it's the opposite, under 60 even eating 2 or 3 times my glucose levels were so low, i gain 88.2 lbs (40 kilograms, 20 in 2 months and the rest little by little even doing diets and exercise).
Fasting made you develope pre diabetes? How was your overall diet afterthe fast? Once fasted you'll be insulin sensitive, which is why you have to be careful on what you do after a fast.
@@meebyte i just started eating little portions of food, but i was weak and my hands start to shake a lot, then i started to eat more, one day i realized that even consuming a lot of sugar my levels of glucose were lower and i went to the hospital and my doctor diagnostic was insulin resistance, obviously after blood tests.

Just did my daily fall in love routine.. and speaking of water fasting, I am finishing the third day just now. Feeling great and this is my third time. I do it once in every three months for 4-5 days. Everyone talks about the doctor's supervision, but no one sees a doctor. This should be pointed out stronger. Check your vitals every 6 months people. Stay healthy!
Yeah, I was morbidly obese. Then last year my Mum died and to say I lost my appetite would be an understatement. I've been mostly drinking water and cold sugerless tea. Sometimes I don't eat anything for 3 days at a time. I've lost over 40 kgs since Christmas. That's basically a small person worth of weight. So yeah, "water fasting" aka starving yourself, does work.
I water fast once a year for a week and It makes me feel really healthy after. Now I know it isn't for everyone but it detoxes me mentally and physically. But I always observe my body from very close and make sure it's okay, if I feel the slightest bit odd I stop IMMEDIATELY!!!!
@@Ellbat so basically it's when u have like a really high carb day and then like a no carb day. You could do the same with High cal and low cal. The idea is that your body would be confused and the chemicals in the body would change or something like that. If u wanna get more science-y I suggest looking online. xxx
@Борис Янакиев I am aware as I am a vegetarian, it's just very difficult to further restrict the vegetarian diet and still get all of your macro and micronutrients
But it’s not really a “diet” tho, if done right and with prior research it’s a fully sustainable and complete. And it is also not something people do for weight loss or as a magical cure-all solution. Raw vegan is questionable tho.
I LOVE how you talk about the diet, and it's dangers, possible side effects and the good stuff this is so fucking important. specially for us, in recovery from e.d
Me: wants to try test out water fasting Also me: loves chocolate almond milk Just thought I should say, *chocolate almond milk is better than normal chocolate milk*
I have had anorexia for a very long time. I have also been water fasting for nearly as long. It can be uncomfortable but overall the benefits outweigh the risks. After fasting for 90 hrs. I get really high on it. Nothing compares to the level of spirituality I feel while fasting.
As someone who's struggled with anorexia for years (the tendencies are still there, they'll always be, but i've been disease free for the past 2 yrs), i find the concept of fasting unsupervised and for diet reasons absolutely insane. Ignoring your hunger pains makes you forget long term what it means to be hungry, how much should you eat and how often should you eat!! It can also reaaaallly fuck up your metabolism and cause weight gain as well as significant metabolic issues!! It is sooo irresponsible to promote that and im so glad you talked about this seriously, laying down facts and science!! Thnk u!❤❤
Thank you so much for this, Ell. I've been desperately looking for a diet to return to a healthy weight, and with how seriously I want it, I considered a water fast. This actually medical and scientific knowledge behind it was very helpful to me. And the laughs are always great.
I listen to your diet videos when I work out in the morning. Not only are these vids super interesting to me, they inspire me to become healthier without practically starving myself 🎶 thanks! 🐅
I've done 5 water fasts so far, my longest being 6 days. However I do drink black tea/green tea (no sugar) as well as soda water (zero calories) to help with hunger pangs. They work. I'm currently on my 6th water fast, this time I've got Himalayan pink salts to help with electrolyte depletion as well as multivitamins to supplement the lack of minerals. I'm going to attempt a 2-week stretch this time.
I'd like to see you do the rainbow diet. Or a trend diet that you could vlog over time - the 30 day vegan diet, would be interesting if you were up for it - I'd be interested to see the effects of that - especially because I was considering it after hearing how "good" it is.
@@Leanne_w Sorry, "extreme" was probably the wrong word to use. You can change your eating habits without making it an "extreme" diet. I also would not consider veganism an "extreme diet" in the usual context. I believe I simply meant longer here. However, I fully understand why a restrictive diet or one that went on for longer would be potentially triggering and harmful in this case. I respect that. When I posted this over a year ago, it was in the midst of her KPop diet series and her various other food related challenges. So did not think she would shy away from this type of video or find this harmful. I simply watched a RUclipsr who often filmed diet videos and, in comparison, thought these would not be as restrictive, yet would still hold entertainment value. This was, of course, without the context. Now I have watched more from her, outside of these and respect why she no longer films these types of videos. Apologies, for my poor wording.
I am glad she has stopped filming these videos as her physical and mental health is paramount. She is truly a wonderful woman and apologies to all for any harm done.

Also you can die of hyperhydration. So really if you are going to just drink water, you better know what you are doing. Mostly bad things can happen to you :)
"Too much" water is one (and more) liters, in a very short time period. Like, if you chug one liter in, lets say, ten minutes, you're going to feel nauseous, dizzy. Most people throw this up before your body has time to process it, however, it's still not a good idea. Chug two liters in the same time, and you're putting yourself at a severe risk. What happens is, your cells drown and they dillute the salt content in your entire body. We need a balance between water and salt to function. Too much or too little of any of these is not good. You can without harm, drink two to three or more liters in a day, just portion it out. You will pee a lot, and pee mostly clear, but your kidneys can as a general rule, process one to two deciliters of fluid each hour. If I remember correctly, I can't remember the source.
you forgot to mention how dangerously addicting the dizzy feeling is, along with the desire to feel empty, and for those in recovery of and ED how a water fast can trigger a relapse, ;)

A teaspoon of lo or lite salt (50/50 sodium/potassium) diluted into your water through the day and a magnesium citrate supplement are the simplest ways to get them.

What the fuck

Yall you aren't learning healthy benefits. That's why you shouldn't not eat for days, it's not going to teach you the ways to eat healthy.
I'm not gonna read that oh hell nawwww

Plus it proves to yourself you do not need to be a slave to food. And with the upcoming planned famine, you're going to need to know this.

You have very low fat stores. 24 hours is fine for anyone at a healthy place, and is a good 'break' for your body. Water fasting longer than that would not be recommended for you. She’s mentioned that she used to be anorexic so doing an extreme diet wouldn’t be good for her.

If you drink too much water too fast. But if you drink it over time your kidneys will be able to process it and you will pee it out
"Too much" water is one (and more) liters, in a very short time period.
