It would have been super cool if you explained WHY I might want Type 1 instead of Type 2. According to your example, your speeds were MUCH faster as Type 2.
In general if you need to ask you should not have NAT type 1 for your safety. NAT type 1 is typical useful for setting up servers which you want to have a static external IP i.e. it can be reached from anywhere using that IP. The common misconception is it holds back games if it isn't NAT type 1.
Thanks guys. I'm an old guy that isn't super well versed in the technical side of this stuff. I just want to get in there and shoot people in the games with the least amount of lag possible.
Great explication. Far and away the best on RUclips. It is interesting as to why Sony chooses to use the terms Type 1, 2, and 3 on the network dashboard. I think this just leads to a lot of confusion amongst the less tech inclined gamers. So many big gaming channels use the term NAT Type 1 and Open NAT interchangeably. They are not the same at all.
Thank you for the video. I now know why my internet is very slow downloading games, and what the different NAT Types are and what they mean. Basically I will have to invest more money into my internet services to go for a wired connection it’s that simple. Additionally I know how to benefit fully off of it also.
You missed a setup. You can connect a hub (or a router configured to operate as a hub) to the modem. Every device on the hub will be given a different public IP. Note that ISP's will likely require a service upgrade to allow this. It used to cost about $10/mo per extra public IP from one of my old ISP's but I have also seen it as a free feature. In this type of setup, a router can be connected to the hub to have a separate network that operates on a separate public IP. One reason to have this sort of setup was that UPnP used to be very hit and miss and if needing to run multiple computers/devices that needed the same ports forwarded, it would oftentimes not work properly with some routers. Also if running multiple servers on the same ports and same internet connection, like multiple different websites.
I had a nat type3 and wasn’t able to play with my friends on cod or parties said can’t hear me because of nat issues... I went for the router configuration and turned on uPnP and was able to get me to type 2 and never had any issues after that.. most recent routers have the option. Even with a 120 download 25 upload I had issues btw
dmz in most home routers just opens all your ports to a single device in your private network, but it doesnt give it a public ip. Its like activating port forwarding for all ports to a device. Your router might have a more expanded definition of what dmz typically is on a home router which it calls DMZplus. At 5:10 it says once you activate this feature your other hosts with private ips wont be able to communicate with the host in DMZplus, which seems to suggest that it will get a public ip making it more like an actual modem passthrough feature not the typical home router dmz. On my home router for example placing the ps4 in dmz opened my nat in games but left the psn nat to type 2. I had to activate a feature that allowed devices to make their own PPPoE connections. Then configured the connection on the ps4 with PPPoE and then i got type 1.
DMZ doesn't mean NAT type 1, Its just to avoid Port limitiations, NAT type 1 just means your PS4 is connected directly to the internet, Nat 2 is with a Router or Modem and Nat 3 is Router or Modem and additional firewalls that your ISP is applying to your connection like NAT44. also you can have NAT 1 with WiFi.

Some ISPs provide only NAT 2 by default (from the cable). So if you activate DMZ and open specific ports in your router it will still be NAT 2. You need to contact your ISP for that and usually you won't get anything from the support. So just accept it, you're stuck with nat 2.

Nothing. The Playstation 4 is not designed to make any services that requires a public IP. But it is possible, since it is an IP network device. BUT! You could be in a situation where your PS4 is behind a firewall that blocks certain services. Such as remote play. You could go around the NAT and just connect your PS4 to the WAN. It is overkill, but possible.
If you have a modem only, you can also install a switch and after your switch you can still use your router, just connect your ps4 on the switch instead of your router
It's literally the most flawless connection I've played on since I mentioned it on your video the other day. The ethernet switch idea has really panned out for me. I can let my ps4 use all my connection. Then, the other devices behind the router, i can limit by enabling a qos and limit their available bandwidth. But hey, some people might just want all their devices behind a router and just be done with it but the gameplay is flawless with all ports opened.

If you want NAT 1 you have to put the public IP on the console, you would have to use 4 public IPs to make it work, maybe you don't need it to exist the UPNP
To each their own but maybe you should explain to people why having a public IP on your PS4 is potentially a bad thing. As a cyber security professional I would never dream of putting my PS4 on a public IP. This makes it discoverable to outside threats and more susceptible to attacks. If anyone does this, for the love of God please do not have your PlayStation set to automatically log you into your PSN account (i.e. require your password to be entered) and second, DO NOT store your credit card information in the system. Simply enter your credit card information in manually each and every time you make a purchase. I love the videos John, but in this instance, this is really bad advice.
So, my friend who uses his data hotspot to play on his PS4 has never had NAT Type 3 before until recently, and now he can't play most games with us, like Minecraft or CoD or Fighterz. He can still play Apex and a couple other games, but that's it. It kinda sucks. Is there any reason why he's now got Type 3 all of a sudden? I wish there was a way to fix this, but we haven't been able to find a way to yet.
I have a mild solution to bypass NAT3 that may not have been mentioned here... A way to obtain direct connectivity without using wireless and put the PS4 in anyroom in your home ( not for dorms ). Power LINE - Using your home electric wiring to transmit internet...I use it with my VERIZON FIOS FIBER 1GB and its amazing!! If your wiring has issues, another soultion is MOCA... which uses your home cable wiring but it has limitations...
I gave up on this awhile ago. I used DMZ on my PS4 and even my PS3 way back and was never able to get type 1. Type 2 has never hindered me from connecting to other consoles. The main concern is having ports opened. Since my Nat is always open I've never worried about it. The funny thing is I have put my switch in the DMZ and my Nat is type A which is equivalent to 1 on PS4. Oh well lol
There is no "fix" it just states your current condition. Its "change". And how to change feel free to read this: connection.support.playstation.com/#!/ navigate to "My online experience is poor" -> "I want to change my NAT type" -> "Both" -> "Type 3"
NAT Type 1 = open network, no router/firewall

To each their own but maybe you should explain to people why having a public IP on your PS4 is potentially a bad thing. As a cyber security professional I would never dream of putting my PS4 on a public IP. This makes it discoverable to outside threats and more susceptible to attacks. If anyone does this, for the love of God please do not have your PlayStation set to automatically log you into your PSN account (i.e. require your password to be entered) and second, DO NOT store your credit card information in the system. Simply enter your credit card information in manually each and every time you make a purchase. I love the videos John, but in this instance, this is really bad advice.
I dont understand anything happening in this video but that i have NAT type 3 and i cant fix it
because ur stupid
Did you fix it ?
What can I do if my modem has only fiber optic cable? How can I connect it directly to my PS4?
1.2 Mbps
19.1 kbps
Gameplay Videos your internet is crap
Yikes
So, my friend who uses his data hotspot to play on his PS4 has never had NAT Type 3 before until recently, and now he can't play most games with us, like Minecraft or CoD or Fighterz. He can still play Apex and a couple other games, but that's it. It kinda sucks. Is there any reason why he's now got Type 3 all of a sudden? I wish there was a way to fix this, but we haven't been able to find a way to yet.
so do I just need to move my Wi Fi not near my pc or satalite (can't spell)
jack pfeifer are u sure cuz i am nate 3
I've got my ps4 connected to an internet extender. And since then it's been at NAT 3
Yep. Double NAT. Not a good setup.
I’m using a repeater to extend the signal of my router and I have type 2 but I need type 1 to play one of my games
Wtf all i get is 5.9 mps you get 89.9 mps 😂😂😂
I gave up on this awhile ago. I used DMZ on my PS4 and even my PS3 way back and was never able to get type 1. Type 2 has never hindered me from connecting to other consoles. The main concern is having ports opened. Since my Nat is always open I've never worried about it. The funny thing is I have put my switch in the DMZ and my Nat is type A which is equivalent to 1 on PS4. Oh well lol
HOW DO I FIX MY NAT TYPE SO I CAN JOIN MY FRIEND
There is no "fix" it just states your current condition. Its "change". And how to change feel free to read this: connection.support.playstation.com/#!/ navigate to "My online experience is poor" -> "I want to change my NAT type" -> "Both" -> "Type 3"
Oh..so NAT type 2 on the PS4 but the NAT is open in games is good enough then? Meaning I don’t need to specially get type 1?
I have a nat type 3 and I use a ian cable and I’m in college I need help I’m dumb
