MakeNoise DXG | Life after Optomix

- The DXG is one of the first 'green' LPG's that sound like a true lo-pass gate that honors Don Buchla's legacy. It doesn't just replace good old Optomix, it adds a lot of patching power in that same 8 HP footprint. First and forremost, it's the World's first dual stereo LPG. On mild settings it sounds like the Optomix. Push it a bit harder, and you'll get the top LxD channel which has this 12 dB 'bite'. It also offers the dynamic response from the 0-Coast and a stereo Aux that can be used as an FX send/return when you patch Ch 2 to your effects chain. It's highly recommended to get your moddemix back in your case, because strikes can now be velocity sensitive and you can use it to 'damp' the model. The DXG will seriously extend your sonic potential and also works very well in the Old Shared where you can use four DPO outputs and mix Erbe-Verb and Echophon back in.
There's just one 'caveat' I found. There's no CH1 output. This goes directly to the 'Sum' out. So in the old Shared, you'll need to use a module like moddemix to get access to that mono sum, which is needed by the EP and EV. But that's an easy workaround :).
This video features a patch from the DXG manual, created by Ryan. It's called the Stereophonic Ethereal Woodland Space Drone. With a name like that, I just had to give it a try.
I was convinced I'd miss Optomix when using the DXG, but honestly, I do not.
It's easier to miss the DXG when it's gone. But then you can still use the XPAN to patch loads of sounds to the Optomix and add some dynamics by crossfading and panning. I am really looking forward starting the first episode of the new Shared System X tutorial series. The 'X' is not an official system, it represents your personal custom machine.
Final notes about the four vactrol-free alternatives I shown in the video.
Rabid Elephant's natural gate is brillant, but it's unobtainium and goes for ridiculous used prices. It's good, but not worth $800. Endorphin.es Sqwk Dirty offers two LPG models, but they only strike. There's no 'ctrl' equivalent to use an envelope (e.g. Maths). The Steady State Gate is more like a circuit bent resonant experimental LPG from a parallel universe and doesn't sound like a Buchla. Finally, Mutable Streams has a vactrol model, but there's just no life in it. These are my personal assessments but modular is about bulding your own personal dream machine and I feel an LPG should sound like the classic Buchla 292 Quad Lo-Pass gate. But that's just me.

I’ve been yearning to get me mitts on one of these sweet babies. This demo just titilates the antici…….pation. Meanwhile, I’ve revisited RXMX and MMG to strike up some perky fun in my newly consolidated Shared System suitcase. I got to spill over to a second case. So many toys-so little time.

How do you like the sound of it compared to the 292t?
Is it possible to put a signal in the channel 1 left and a loose cable into channel 1 right, a loose cable into channel 2 left and a signal into channel 2 right and then take the final summed outs left and right to different destinations (eg: make it behave like two independent/mono LPGs?)
The 292T doesn't have a strike input and sounds a bit more mellow compared to the DXG. The DXG can expose a lot of extra punch when CTRL is turned past 03:00, but sounds similar to the 292T and the Optomix around 01:00. The scenario of CH1 with L patched R dummy and CH2 R patched indeed gives you dual mono LPGs you can process independently (or just have an amazing hard L/R panning fest).

Great, maybe a shootout, bongo style? LXD-Optomix-DXG. I tried the System X setup. It is a nice case but not definitive, it’s missing a big bold reverb, the Mimeophon is not enough for me. Only 4hp left, something gotta go or change🤔
Actually I am working on one :). As for the reverb, i miss that too, but my Noise Engineering case with six versios is one level up. When MakeNoise will eventually release a new Erbe-Verb the case will no longer work for me either....
Heads up Magarit updated the firmware for LANIAKEA and dialed back the distortion a bit. I'm finding it much more usable.
I always feel it has a mind of its own, but it's a beautiful mind.
Hi, great patch :) Optomix is an envelope generator in addition to being a low pass gate, which allows you to send the generated envelope into a VCA if you want. What about DXG? I feel like there is some ambiguity about this?
I am not sure what you mean. Optomix needs an evnelope generator into CTRL or a strike. However, you could 'abuse' the strike response when you don't patch the input. I am not aware DXG can do this too but I will do a deep dive into LPG's again after I made a few different videos.
@@CinematicLaboratory Thanks for your reply. I mean Optomix can be just a envellope generator: strike and you gate a envellope and them you can use it in a other module like your favorite VCA for example. So you have a fast bango enveloppe, but without the low pass thing.
@@Kpidg True, you can use Optomix as a 'vactrol response' envelope. I've checked for you. The DXG is totally silent. But I am planning to do a deep dive on vactrol LPG's vs DXG soon.

Considering replacing Optomix with DXG but I want to use both LPGs individually. If I read manual correctly it is not possible with DXG. You can't get first LPG out without mix with second. Did I understood it correctly?
Correct. Ch1 is summed together with Ch2 and the aux in and only Ch2 has “direct outs”
Honestly, the DXG is a great 'first LPG' but if you already own an Opto or LxD you may find it sounding too different. I see it as a complementary module, but not a replacement.

Sounds amazing and very innovative. But that's a vactrol machine! At some points it reminds me of the QMMG.

Nice demo patches. The DxG seems to sound a bit boring and sterile to be honest. But that's more a matter of taste.
I also think it's a design mistake not to have output 1 available separately.
Boring and sterile may be my patch :) but I compared with the LxD today and the difference is quite big. But there's also a big difference between LxD and Opto. Having no CH1 output also bothers me. The only way to solve this is to get a second one and chain it.
@@CinematicLaboratory I prefer the mild resonance of the LxD's channel 1 over the Optomix: gives it some extra flavour, but that's not always what you'd want.
No Vactrols:(. My cases want cadmium and red paint lol
