Very, very cool! Another layout to explore. By the way, that old patch was brilliant, more like Tibetan bells. This one is more like a gong and doesn't need a Shared. Still missing a 'sizzle' so I bet using a bit of Spectraphon and slow envelopes will go to China.
Sometimes, it's as entertaining to listen to you talk as watching you patch. Though probably planned, it seems more "stream of consciousness". Reminiscent of the character Chris in Northern Exposure. Another winner.
Thanks! Full disclosure: I decided to script the video in this way after a Covid-induced fever dream… the patch was sitting and waiting to be recorded for about a week ⚡️🎶
QPAS (and Mimeophon) are the keystones in my MN setup. Their playability with great sound and unique features puts them in my overall top 10. It disturbs me to see so many on the second hand market because I wonder how far people have looked into them before deciding to sell them. Can't live without them.
Damn. Getting Borges' "Garden of Forking Paths" vibe from your intro...no other modular synth YT personality brings this kind of wild connective insight, at least for me.
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSICI had a feeling I had this feeling before! Yes! I had seen it, but this was a great time to watch it again. Sort of haunting hearing the sounds but seeing the empty chair: the patch going on without you there
as much as i enjoyed the patch (way into pitched percussion) i enjoyed even more you talking process and abstractions, keep the philosophical aspect to these videos
The old patch with the DPO, ModDemix and QPAS sounds more like a pitched gong. However, the modulation feedback in the new patch adds a lot of liveliness to the sound!
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC probably a happy accident when someone plugged two oscillators into a ring mod and a filter and discovered: That sounds like a gong 😅 I find it very inspiring when you show your patches and also explain how you came up with the idea. Making Noise is synonymous to exploring sounds.
In terms of whether or not it matters if it sounds like a gong, I think it depends on the perspective. When creating a patch, I try not to think of defining sounds by their similarities to acoustic ones. However, I think it's important to note that most listeners (especially those outside of the world of bleeps and bloops) probably make these associations, at least on a subconscious level. Further, there might be certain expectations created by the presence of a particular timbre, and the decision of whether and how much to confirm or subvert those expectations can open up lots of fun creative pathways. I'd love to see more videos dealing with patch experiences and philosophies. Excellent video, as always!
Thanks for your thoughts! I agree with you - it can be so fun to unexpectedly hear something familiar in a patch, and then “follow the sound” as our friend Todd Barton likes to say ⚡️
Nice 👍 Modular synthesis is analogous to taking a bicycle ride through the countryside, only stopping when your inner gong chimes in at a place / point of interest. Then it's onwards to other destinations and sonorous pitstops.
Glad it's working for you! "La Synthèse Humaine" is a Serge-oriented channel with the philosophy/synth connection made probably even more explicit, unfortunately they don't post super often.
I always wanted to figure out how to recreate a sound from Tomita's "Snowflakes are Dancing" where he had these tails that ascended in pitch that layered over each other. I would love to see your take on that! Thanks!
Listening unfolds within the stream of Space-Time. Patching is bound together by electrons, each with a lifespan of 66,000 yottayears (5 quintillion times the current age of the Universe). Our spirits ride the standing waveform we call consciousness, on the longboard of Life, hanging ten toes into the Unknown. Thanks for sharing your Art, Walker!
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC Let's just say it would be a challenge to reproduce with a different stereo filter for example. No guilt bro. You SHOULD be showing the value of MN modules. Kinda your job ;)
Tomita whistle patch: please! Any other of his timbres/patches would be great to see as well. FYI I've gotten something resembling the "weird clock chimes" sounds he had on his version of "The Sunken Cathedral" with a QPAS, Maths, and Teleharmonic.
I would love listen to the Tomita Patch and see how it's done. Which Tomita Album were you referring to? I only know "Pictures of an exhibition" and some of the Holst "Planets" but I'm not sure whether they feature this particular patch. Thanks for this very interesting video!!
I believe the Debussy record has the whistle fairly prominently featured, even including the audible process of it being constructed from a noise source and filters :)
"It's easy to delude ourselves that logic has a monopoly on truth" I was going to try and use that phrase to shoehorn my usual "Oof" comment but that sentiment is so beautifully articulated, it would be a shame to ruin it. That being said, I think that these fantastic videos certainly have a monopoly on Oof! Amiright?
I love your patch videos, always learn something interesting to try out. But I think I tune in even more to just hear you talk about sound and process. I'm curious how much scripting goes into the dialog or if this is just how you talk all the time?
I probably do talk like this all the time... but the videos are scripted :) Here's an unscripted "off the cuff" talking with Tony about the Shared System and making music: ruclips.net/video/C4ox-VjRlX4/видео.html
I appreciate your discussion on how you got to the patch / worked in reverse. If someone don’t know this, it’s easy to assume if you cannot plan amazing things forward through time, in seconds, you stink. Also holy snuggly cow
Came here to learn about a patch, ended up learning about learning itself 💜

I came here to learn about a patch, ended up confused on when to use snugly and snuggley.
You are such a great educator, Walker!
Thank you :)
My favorite part of this is when Walker said "it's Möbing time" and then Möbed all over us.
Razzies here we come! 😛

@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC Again, your way with words is just brilliant. What an amazing story.

Yes to more patches from the Allen Strange book. There’s a few in there I’ve been meaning to try. Wonderful video, always inspiring.

I think I agree! One thing I'm curious about now is how they arrived at that original idea for the patch.

Get it on-ping a gong, get it on.
Meanwhile, I’m still thinking…
Your videos are always inspiring Walker. Inspiration is a precious thing, of COURSE I would like to see a Bells and Whistles video or two. Peace 🖖

Why stop there? Indeed, why stop anywhere? ;)
It's a beautiful sound. The earlier chaotic, noisier eounds as well, btw.
You've got more (Allen) Strange ideas? Yes, please!
Walker is great at coming up with patches that you need lots of MN modules for. Anybody might think he was in marketing 🤣
It’s funny you say that since in some ways the whole point of this patch was that you DON’T need lots of modules 😭
