    Awesome story. A friend of mine had a friend who’s a dentist so I asked him to ask him if he would talk to me. I spoke with him and I explained that my school recommended getting 150 hours of shadow experience and asked him if I could get some shadow experience with him. He said “I don’t know about 150 hours but I can give you one day if you want to come in.” So I was grateful and said I would love that. I am going to shadow with him next week for a day and I was thinking “if I can win him over maybe that one day will turn into something more.” This story gave me hope that I might just be able to do that. Fingers crossed!

    In my state (CT) we have to be certified to become a dental assistant. Which means we have to go through dental assisting school which can take up to 9 months of training. How should I find opportunities like this if I need to do that program? I don't have 9 months to spare!!

      Christina Budzinski if you don't want to go through DA training, I would recommend trying to volunteer as a sterilization tech at a dental office. This will give you work experience in the office and if you get lucky, you might even get paid for it! Good luck :)

      Thank you for your response! I've shadowed a dentist but I've noticed that the dental assistants to sterilization, and they even have a float assistant who sterilizes the rooms. What should I do? Should I check other offices?

      Christina Budzinski you can keep trying to volunteer at that office if they will let you, but it sounds like you might need to look around the area for other opportunities. The real key is to be patient and keep looking for opportunities!

    loved your video. i want to go to school for dental assistant. but i hear that doctors treat assistants like trash and they talk down on them. im sure not every doctor but can you please shed some light to me (or anyone in the field) before i choose this as a career

      Thats a great question to ask, Samuel. every profession will have a boss that treats his or her staff like the dirt of the earth... but in every profession, there are also plenty of bosses that treat their staff with the utmost respect. you just have to find the right office! I hope that helps. best of luck to you!

    You got any certificates for all the volunteer work you did? To add to your dental school application ???

    I'm also trying to get shadowing hours. I convinced my dentist to let me shadow, but i don't know how i would record those volunteer hours. So, my question to you is how did you record your hours?

    • @DentalPro2021
      @DentalPro2021  7 лет назад +1

      to be honest, I had to estimate my numbers, and I definitely was on the low side when I recorded my hours. I started off by recording my hours in an excel document that was dedicated to shadowing, extracurricular and service hours for the application...but my work experience in the dental office got to the point where I had so hours that wasn't concerned with getting an exact number..and based on how my application went, I don't think the schools really cared either. they just wanted to see that I had adequate experience in a dental office.

      ok, thank you so much! and when i record my hours do i have to get a signature from the dentists? or just keep track of the hours?

    BTW if I get my certification through one of those 12 week programs to become a DA to work mean while I get my undergrad, do you think those are legit? And I know you mentioned you volunteered for a while would those hours count as shadowing hours?

    • @DentalPro2021
      @DentalPro2021  7 лет назад +1

      my volunteer hours definitely counted as shadowing. however, if you were going to get a paid position, you would need to count it as paid work experience on the AADSAS. as far as the DA program goes, its really up to you...i looked into doing a certification course like that after my first year of undergrad, but then I ended up getting a position at the dental office before starting a DA program. I have definitely heard of some students doing that though and it seemed to work out for them.
