@ChaosPatriot76 Actually Matilda was a slang term for the bag the swagman carried, usually containing their few possessions, in modern terms it would be a tent or bedroll, but other than that yeah he pretty much stole a ram from one of the local squatters
It was indeed put forward to replace the British one. The lyrics were replaced with God Bless Australia, give it a listen. Unfortunately it didn't get the nod and lost out to Avance Australia Fair.
@@angieroxy7550 It feels like it was written by some little kid under great time pressure, the lyrics are mostly meaningless. Most national anthems of English-speaking countries tend to be pretty bad. The only exemption I know of is "God save the Queen", it's fine, but "Rule Britannia" is better.
To people who don't get it: This song is about a swagman (worker) carrying a swag (bedroll where swagman puts his stuff) which he affectionately calls Matilda, hence the title of the song. As the song goes, the swagman camps by a convenient billabong (watering hole) under a coolibah tree (or Eucalyptus coolabah, a kind of tree found in eastern inland Oz*) and sings his catchphrase, "You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me!" as he watches and waits for his billy to boil. (he was boiling some water for a nice cup of tea) A random jumbuck (sheep) comes to drink the water of the billabong, the swagman catches the jumbuck and shoves it into his tucker bag, (handbag which he conveniently has with him) planning to have it for dinner. The squatter, (landowner) who apparently is the jumbuck's owner, comes up mounted on his thoroughbred (pure-bred horse) with three troopers (police) and demands that the swagman return the jumbuck. My fave part: As the troopers try to arrest him, the swagman declares, "You'll never take me alive!!" and drowns himself in the billabong. He dies, and if you pass by the billabong, you can hear his ghost singing his catchphrase over and over. *Oz is another name for Australia.

The song is infinitely better as an anthem, and for some reason it literally only just dawned on me that if the complaints are that it’s about a criminal there’s no reason the lyrics couldn’t be tweaked. But it’s SOOO much more singable
With respect, not so. Advance Australia Fair replaced God Save the Queen as Australia's official anthem in 1984, following a plebiscite in 1977 to choose our national song. Over 7 million of the 8.4 million people on the electoral roll chose to vote in the plebiscite, with Waltzing Matilda pipped at the post by Advance Australia Fair. At the time I was a teenager and remember the public conversation leading to the plebiscite - we debated the topic at school - everyone had strong opinions about it. Waltzing Matilda was the sentimental favourite, but the lyrics were perceived as controversial and a teensy bit embarrassing - should we choose for our anthem a song about a sheep duffer who commits suicide rather than submit to the law (or tyranny, depending which way you look at it)? My parents thought so and voted accordingly because their respective fathers, uncles and great-uncles were ANZACS (1st and 2nd AIF) who sang Waltzing Matilda as they marched off to war - for them Waltzing Matilda expressed the ANZAC ethos of Death or Victory: 'You'll never catch me alive, said he!' Whenever I hear those words I get a lump in my throat. Sheer bloody-minded, self-defeating anti-authoritarian Fuck You is just so ... Australian. For that reason Advance Australia Fair leaves me cold - it's spin doctoring, PR - it doesn't say anything about who we are, why we are the way we are, or what we aspire to.
