Portuguese wines have many things going for them as the country has a long history, a lot of indigenous grape varieties, and diverse Terroirs, and on top of that, the wines are generally cheap.
It is the 10th largest wine producer in the world. While the country looks out over the Atlantic and was instrumental in discovering the rest of the world, it was also isolated for a long time and therefore stuck to old traditions, methods, and varieties.
With Port and Madeira Portugal continues to produce some of the most famous fortified wines, but there are also great table wines coming out of Portugal - especially today.

I have a little story here. I live in Madrid and at one time I lived near a wine shop that boasted a wonderful range of wines from around the world. Ha! I found a few from the USA, A few from France and one or two from Italy. Then I found a red Dao and I commented to the owner (or maybe manager) that Portugal as a country had perhaps the greatest range of vine varieties in the World and wasn't that amazing! From a pleasant demeanor he suddenly turned on me and said Portugese wine was all plonk, they didn't know how to make wine and what I had just said was a complete lie and what did I know anyway I was English and had no idea about wine at all. Needless to say I never returned!
Hahahahaha, a typical Spanish response to anything Portuguese, by a Spaniard, that most likely, never set foot in Portugal, or even tried anything Portiguese.
Each country thinks its wine is the best, so I´m not surprised at that happening in Madrid, cause of all regions, Madrid is the one that dislikes Portugal more.
Saying that I´ve tasted great wines in Spain and very bad ones as well, the main difference I found regarding Portugal is that they have great quality products but fail at marketing their products, they really need to sell themselves better, that's the fault of the people as they struggle to believe in themselves but mostly I blame the Portuguese government.
But the hospitality, warmth and joie de vivre they possess along with the nostalgia and slow pace of life, make the Portuguese grow in the heart of countless people every year, so much so, Portugal is breaking pre-Covid tourism records
I´ve tried Portuguese cuisine and wines and oh boy was I surprised, such a rich and vast variety, they even eat snails in the summer along with a draft as a snack just like the French, so dare yourself and do like me and visit that beautiful country.

Totally underrated wines. On our honeymoon in Portugal we randomly contacted Quinta da Pellada in Dão to ask if we could drop in. They were not only welcoming, the winemakers drove us around the vineyards in the old Land Cruiser, did a tasting with us in one of the Estates houses, then the main man Alvaro Castro himself joined us for the occasion! Genuinely lovely people, great conversation and beautiful wine. A truly memorable experience.
Of all the winerys in Portugal that you could have wandered into you sure stumbled into the very best of Dão, Álvaro de Castro is making some of the best portuguese wines at the moment, from Quinta da Pellada, his Carrocel Red Wine is an ode to wine making as his the White Primus. He also has another estate close by called Quinta de Saes. One of Portugals greatest wine producers for sure !!
@@josemariagomes7768 yes we tasted some amazing wines, including some we couldn’t afford! We knew of Alvaro Castro (i had enjoyed his wines before) and wanted to visit. It was indeed a good choice and a lucky day. I just wish more Portuguese wines were available here in Australia (we have an embarrassingly small selection available here - it’s horrible tbh)

I live in Portugal for over 20 years.
During these two decades, Portuguese wine made a big step forward in terms of quality. A new generation of winemakers are involved in this process.
The result are wonderful wines at pretty affordable prices, compared to French wines for example.
When I’m abroad, I’m almost always disappointed by the wines I get served, and when I see the price tags I get depressed.
On one hand I wish that Portuguese wines get more recognised abroad, on the other hand I’m afraid that prices might rise when they’re not a Geheimtipp any more…
Portugal is a country I've fallen in love with. They have such a friendly and welcoming culture paired with excellent food and wine. And as a Brit I've always grown up around green luscious scenery, but most hot areas in the likes of France and Spain often have a more arid feel, whereas Portugal has all the culinary benefits of their neighbours whilst also retaining the beautifully lush flora and scenery

As a Portuguese when I heard "Affordable" I instantly thought "Ah yes, these 2,50€ to 4€ bottles are divine!"
I searched for the price of those wines in this list and said: nope. Not for me.
As a portuguese Sommellier i coudnt be happy enough to hear your opinion about our wines. I'd say that the selection was VERY WELL chosen! Most of my clients are not portuguese and I get a lot of people discovering Portuguese wine and ive been very happy with their feedback.
A few notes from me. The encruzado is my favourite grape and a lot of times, I do present to my clientes as Chablis Chardonnay "lookalike" 😃 not because of the aromas or taste, but how similar they are in there purpose ,therefore im very happy that you would also describe this grape, the same way. Encruzado is War veteran, as you could have it with Sushi, Salad, Grilled Fish, Fish in the Oven, AND even with Turkey, Chicken, Duck you name it! Its an ALL-ROUNDER!
Douro Reds are incredible, my favourite Reds, is a shame that this selection wasn´t the right one, I wouldnt specifically recomend this as "an example" of a good Douro.
Great alentejo also! Antonio Maçanita ( its MASSANITA ) not Makanita 😄

Well, he clearly chose Niepoort for its name since there are amazing Douro wines at even lower prices. Any wine from Quinta dos Poços will be better than Vertente as well as some from Quinta de La Rosa.
Also, there are some "weird" but amazing wines from Bairrada's Campolargo he could try.
hey! I'm going to Portugal next week and I don't know anything about your wines! What is the cheapest (in Euros) wine I should go to start seeing some quality?? In italy is around 6 euros where the quality starts to change. What about Portugal(I can't afford to drink much expensive wine all the time lol).

Of all the West European countries Portugal probably offers the best QPR and amazingly affordable wines. As you mentioned there is a lot of variety of taste and flavor profiles in the different regions. The Douro, Dao and Vinho Verde are my favorites, though Bairrada seems to be an exciting emerging region. In the past I found Alentejano wines to be a bit heavy, overly fruity and not so well balanced. But that last wine from there sounded pretty awesome, sounds like things are changing there.
I went to Lisbon last year, and absolutely loved Portugese wine. Of all wines of the world, I believe it has the greatest bang for your buck, often punching above its weight in price. My most favourite discovery was Vinho Verde - I had not heard or tried of it in my 20 years of exploring wine. It was a revelation at how easy it drinks and goes so well with just about any meal. The acidity and freshness, along with super fine bubbles dancing on your palette, really compliment just about every meal in Portugal. I goes well with any spicy, rich, or even delicate poultry or seafood dishes. What it may lack in complexity, it makes up in brightness and freshness. Konstantin, are there more complex Vinho Verde's you'd recommend? I'd love to try them. Also, I only learned last year that Vinho Verde was a style of wine, but didn't know there was also a designated region on Portugal - thanks for sharing that knowledge. Another bargain and great value region for wine is South Africa - I've also had great value wines from there too - maybe for another video? Cheers!
It is a region and a style yes. Kind of like champagne in a way. You can't call it Vinho Verde if it is not from the region.
One of my favourite producers is Quinta da Raza. They have a wide variety of wines from single-grape to blends, white, red, rosé... Standouts for me are the Red of the grape Vinhão, the whites Alvarinho and Gouveio and the rosé Padeiro.
If you lived in Portugal it's as easy as ordering online a bunch of their different bottles :)

When in Lisbon, the restaurant where I had learned about Vinho Verde only had told me that it was wine made from young grapes, and why they're "green" as not yet mature. It's great to learn it's not just from young grapes from any region, but a specific region. With Champagne, I still associate that style of wine as sparking white, but from a specific region. Whereas with Vinho Verde, it's completely its own thing, which is very cool to come across a new style of wine after 20 years in and out of the hospitality industry.

Alentejo really is special. Having gone to a dozen wineries there is always this sense of pride in tradition, well kept but humbly built sturdy old villas with very thick walls that feel like they belong. Like they've grown in thickness as their reputation spread over centuries. It has that Tuscany vibe. I've grown here, drank over 100 alentejos, and I still feel like I've only scratched the surface. Especially with the new generations and foreign knowledge coming in, really fine tuning the winemaking to the climate, the variety is fantastic.
Portugal is my favourite winecountry since I did a two week biking tour along the Douro 20 years ago. My favourite wineries are Quinta do Lemos from Dao(amazing 100% Touriga Nacional 2013) and Wine&Soul from Pinhao/Douro(Pintas and Pintas Character 2017). So good. You should try them.
Finally Portugal!! Very nice video, Konstantin. Good wine choices. I really like your honest opinions. The Encruzado is, actually, one of my favourite grape varieties as it combines fantastic freshness with more complex flavours and aromas. The idea of combinig it with fried chicken made me laugh (in a positive way!).
Being Portuguese, of course I love portuguese wines but I do agree that we still have much to evolve and, also, that the portuguese winemakers are still a bit afraid of some price points, wich leads to, sometimes, our wines being undervalued.

Encruzado is such an amazing white varietal... its bright accidity and high alcohol pontetial gives the wine cellar ageability. Probably my favorite autoctochthonus from Portugal

Love Portuguese wines. We did a pairing dinner a little while back, 6 courses and 6 wines. It was a blast! And eye opening as to how good the wine’s coming out of Portugal are. Thank you for a wonderful video.

Konstantin I'd like to thank you for a nice video. I've recently explored Setubal and Alentejo and my conclusion is that Portugal offers a great variety of solid value wines that are not meant for wine snobs.

Thanks K , must keep trying different types. Only yesterday had my first wine from Portugal for many months. Marques de Borba Bianca, Arinto, Antao Vaz and Viognier. Delightful quaffing stuff “superior cafe wine” 88 points. And now you have encouraged me to try others. Big plus for a light white, it was screwcap.

Some wines i recommend from Portugal as well:
- Beira do Interior - Red wine - Vinified in an old style Earthy, rustic, tannic, a little like Cahors.
- Dão Reds with Jaen (Mencia) - A lot like bierzo wine but more spice and floral
- White Alentejo - Antão Vaz in the blend making really rich white wines
for the white wine of Alentejo for me the Monte Velho from Herdade do Esporao is an excellent entry level wine,
From region of Beira Interior wines i recomend the wines from Quinta dos Termos. A good variety of grapes with different styles.
Hello, Konstantin. Portuguese fan here! Thank you for the video, been expecting it for a long time. Two observations: it's arguable that bairrada os the most important region for sparkling. Távora-Varosa, between Douro and Dão produces it almost exclusively, and has a lot of tradition. I'm not saying you're wrong, but you'll certainly get some resistance from Távora fans. About niepoort, the lack of concentration is not and accident. Dirk has very strong ideas about what he wants from his wines, and intentionally goes against the grain in Douro (but I secretly agree with you). Thank you for all your work.

You should do Greece next! Ive tasted a lot of Greek wines at this point and there are so many incredible grapes and regions that most people have never heard of!
Well, I didn't taste that much portugese wines yet. None the less there is one wine from Portugal I honestly adore, and that is the "Quinta da Mimosa Palmela" from 2018 from producer "Casa Ermelinda Freitas". The wine was recomended by my local wine seller who knows that I love a good Rioja and he said the wine has a similar taste, great quality by charging half the price. And I can confirm that. Now after your video I think I have to dive a little bit deeper into wines from Portugal!
You should come and visit the region and get to know some other producers, it's not as scenic and sprawling as it is up north at Douro, but the Palmela region, where Quinta da Mimosa hails from, has quite some charming beaches nearby and some of the best bang for buck wines in the country. You can scoop some of them Mimosas for around 7€ a piece down here. Cheers
Portugal is near and dear to my heart. I’m there every year and Lisboa is my favority city in Europe. While the reds are excellent at all price points the whites get me really excited like Encruzado which you showed…
People know the Alentejo for soft reds and the Douro for bigger wines but I love the regions of the Dão, Bairrada, and even the Lisboa VR.
Way to show an Alicante Bouchet! For me, it’s hard to top Mouchão for that variety.
Love Mouchao. The only wine I still maintain a vertical. Had dinner with Hamilton Reis, the wine maker in Evora three weeks ago.
Mouchão and Quinta do Mouro are for me top producers in Alentejo.
Got back from a table wine tour of Portugal a couple of weeks ago. Have been in love with Portugal for over a decade. Going to the Azores and Madeira in July.
Great video. Regularly buy Portugese red, white and sparkling. Let's face it: most of us are looking for great wine for a budget, not the best money can buy. And for bang for your buck, extra for your euro, Portugal can be a great choice. Thanks for sharing your expertise so accessibly again.
Agreed! Another great region for great value wine is South Africa. I've had some incredible red wine at great price points.
You believe price has to do with quality when in fact you fail to account for the cost of living in Portugal.
Wine is not cheap in Portugal because it's of lesser caliber, it's not cheap because it's an export commodity, but rather a living necessity priced accordingly.
That means quality is not tied to your globalist perception or import tax burdens, you fell into a supply and demand trap where you're paying for marketing.
And you phrased it as if Portuguese wines were priced to compete with anyone else as if we needed to.

My favorite is Quinta do Vallado 2019 a beautiful Douro Red. We had the pleasure to test some wines last year while we stayed close to the winery.
Oh man.I love finding the wines you recommend and trying them (and the success rate is super high) - but it seems like your favorite two wines are hard to come by in the US. A bummer. I tried several baga wines this weekend. It was an amazing experience! I had some awesome sparkling wines with brioche notes and regarding the red wines, they can be so powerful and other ones can be a perfect match with some friends during a hot summer watching the sunset.
- 1 Sparkling wine that I recommend: 2015 Quinta das Bágeiras Baga Grande Reserva
- 1 Red wine that I recommend: 2011 Quinta da Vacariça Garrafeira Tonel 18

First comment in the channel, my wife and I really enjoy your videos and I genuinely loved this one. I’m originally Greek, and live in Lisbon for the past years; my personal take is that, although Greece is a hidden gem when it comes to wine, and New Zealand & Germany are my favorite wine countries in terms of taste, Portugal is extremely surprising at every turn: Value for money, quality and huge variety - they seem to tick all the boxes. I’m writing this comment sipping a Carcavelos 15yo from Villa Oeiras (a gorgeous dessert wine), and since I remember you’re fond of green and jalapeño pepper taste notes in your white wines, I’d highly recommend to try the Sauvignon Blanc from Vincentino (Alentejo) and Casal Sta Maria (Sintra), both of them at the edge of the Atlantic and quite on the salty side. I’ve only tasted such strong aromas of pepper from South Africa, but these cost 15€; a true bargain. Some Rieslings are quite interesting too, I’d recommend the Beyra and definitely the Muxagat from Douro, they’ve done quite a good job at elevating some fine petrol aromas. As for the reds, I’m still discovering them, for the price range of 10-15€ there are some coffee/chocolate/spice diamonds in the country. Keep up the amazing work!
There's some surprisingly brilliant vines in the south of portugal despite their age. The orange earth on the hills are something else . Recommend it! Also, first ;)

Well, hello gorgeous. This is longtime overdue but the fact that you have both an Anselmo Mendes and a Bairrada that's not by Luís Pato truly shows how deep the research went and more than makes up for this slight.

Vinho Verde wines are some of my favorite wines to drink - particularly in the summer. I love love LOVE an Albarino for its fresh and crisp flavours. And they are so very inexpensive! You get so much bang for your buck!
For Alvarinho try the Quinta do Regueiro, specially the Barrica and the Maturado, as well and every Márcio Lopes wines from Melgaço (and every other region too, great winemaker).
Anselmo Mendes was the first winemaker that saw a huge potential in Melgaço/Monção and in Alvarinho and revolutionized the region. He is someone that really knows a lot about winemaking. Contacto is their bottom of the range and still a great wine for €8 but their top wines compete with very expensive wines from other regions in the world.
Alvarinho is an amazing grape. You can get very different wines from such a small region, you can try 20 wines and all quite different.
Bairrada is home of great baga wines both white and reds, your explanation was spot on and Luis Patrão is a great example of them. Great choice. Anselmo Mendes also has great wines in Bairrada that are worth trying. Quinta das Bageiras and Giz are must tries for Bairrada wines.
Douro and Dão are too big and diverse to mention, Druida is a great example of Encruzado, Santar has a few great ones too, as well as Passarella, Taboadella or Caminhos Cruzados . I’m not very fond of Niepoort wines, they are good but I find the overrated and expensive for what they are.
The Maçanita brothers are becoming winemakers superstars, most of what they do is great, but they are also very experimental. They are making a huge effort to recover old varieties and procedures that were almost gone.

Portugal still underrated in terms of wines.they can compete with the best burgundy or Napa Valley or anywhere in the world.
those are actually 5 great wines. Had them all and they are indeed fantastic!
With red wine becoming more ready to drink with less and less tannins, I can see the day when the majority of my wine purchases will come from Portugal. Red wine likes some cellar time and taking away all the tannins doesn't change that.

Finally! I'd love it if you tasted Loureiro from young winemakers doing exciting things like Miguel Viseu from Aphros/Galactic/Paraiso Natural. Also try the range of Portugal's best sparkling winemaker Caves Transmontanas Vertice, which started with help from Schramsberg.
Nice little selection, especially the whites, I in fact generally prefer Portuguese white wines to reds, not least from a value perspective. The Contacto Alvarinho I sometimes buy here in Sweden, it’s a real bargain at just above €10. Encruzados are more rare than Alvarinhos, but each one I’ve tried have been very good or even sublime, I especially remember a wonderful quite mature Taboadella Reserva. But why no Touriga Nacional?
Alentejo red wines are amazing! Portugal has a lot of good wines from north to south and the islands included!

I attended a tasting in Glasgow, Scotland, in March this year, featuring the producer Sandra Tavares of Quinta de Chocapalha and Wine & Soul. She was on a tour which saw her visit places in the US in April. Her range is first class. Pity that Konstantin didn't include any of her range in his review.
Alentejo reds are a joy to drink, so many decent wines for a good price, love it

I have worked with another wine from Fitapreta, that wine was exceptional value for money in my opinion.
Great that you covered Dão although I think the reds are the best ones in that region. To me they are the most Burgundian reds outside of Burgundy even though they go mostly with TN.

I agree with folks who say Portugal is underrated. I love Port, also both Sercial and Bual Madeira. As I am one who cannot afford to indulge his tastes much, I do appreciate a bargain, and Portugal never disappointed me ONCE. Two wines that spring to mind were a Douro Valley generic mix red, might've been Malbec Cabernet, from Tesco at £6, which is cheap as chips and delicious, and Waitrose Ruby Port, also v inexpensive, which I had at Xmas, clear as a bell, young, sweet and delicious, just like me. Oh, and J. Robinson IS a great wine critic, but the top HAS to be our own dear Konstantin.. How's that for U tube sychophancy? Nice one! Cheers everyone. 🍷🌟👍
Enjoyed you tasting these Portuguese wines. I'll be seeking them out in the UK. On another note: you mentioned that port wines are as popular/declining consumption; I'm sad to hear this (I've no doubt it's true) as I'm a UK-based wine consumer and I love port - not just at Christmas time (when the British seem to rediscover their love of this fortified Portuguese wine!). Is port popular in Germany?

the red I usually drink is Esteva from Douro region and the green is Quinta da Aveleda. they cost around 4.5 - 6 euros. prices have gone up in the last year. we usually don't spend 5 euros in a bottle of wine because there are many good wines for less
Actually not a big fan of Quinta da Aveleda, it's a over processed green wine. My suggestion for green is "Muralhas"
Before moving to Porto I knew next to nothing about the wines of Portugal. There is so much great wine at affordable prices coming out of here. I've had a few on this list but now I'm going to track down a bottle of that encruzado.

Portugal do have some exceptional wines. Although mostly small producers/productions don't allow for a large world visibility. You should make another posts focusing wines per region.

I would say start with the region of Alentejo, go to Setúbal, pass through Douro, Ribatejo, etc...
Fortified wines like "moscatel" can make part of the story alongside Porto and Madeira
And surely there are some interesting wines in Vivino over 4.0. difficult to get 100 points but some will get, from you, into the range of 87-95
We need also wine from Greece 🇬🇷 they are awesome little gems 💎 not overrated!
Just came back from a 2-month trip to Portugal. Tasted quite a few local sparklings and I was very impressed by a 2013 vintage pinot noir by Murganheira. Really good stuff, but priced at 24 Euros at the winery, so I suppose it's reasonable to expect something great 😸

You should try Terra do Demo... I never understand how the people pay for Champagne, when you taste something like Terra do Demo, a sparkling wine that you can drink with meat, like pork, but also with fish like codfish, or others... Just a camaleon...
One of the best sparkling in Portugal, the vintage Pinot Noir from Murganheira. Sadly its price rose a lot lately.

Hi Konstantin, due to climate change and new, adapted grape variaties The Netherlands (particulairly the two most southern regions of Brabant and Limburg) is now also a wine producing country. It would be interesting to see your thoughts on some of the 'top producers' in the country. Although i am dutch myself i am not aware of any truly great wine being produced in the country at this moment. I think this 'new new world' might merit your attention now or perhaps in a few years.
