In an old interview with Hugo Martin he explained that the reason the Praetor suit has humanoid symbols (at least in the 2016 version) is because Doomguy is constantly adding to, and modifying it. We can see this with how he takes upgrades off the Elite Guard, and furthermore in Eternal where he gives the suit a complete redesign as seen in the fortress of Doom, stripping parts off the 2016 armor to accommodate his new one, so it’s like the suit has been altered heavily from its "original" form when it was given to him by the Wretch mentioned in the Slayer’s Testaments
Ah, ok cool. Very interesting. Makes a lot of sense. Though I still wonder who “the wretch” was. I’m guessing Samur Maykr but it’s hard to say for sure EDIT: it’s not Samur or Valen, Hugo has confirmed that the wretch is a separate character

The praetor suit was created by the Sentinels, according to the historical context of the game, during the events of Doom 1, Doom 2 and its expansions Evilution and Plutonia the Doom Guy was a human with only weapons and enough willpower to kill demons, at the end of these events the doom guy falls through a portal that takes him to the planet of the Sentinels. My personal headcannon as to why the armor had the symbol ‘d22’ on it, was because this doomguy is the same marine from the original games, but who eventually got trapped and entombed down in hell. That would explain why it can interface with human technology, and why it was designed for him, a human. As to why no one seems to remember who he is, or what he did for them in the first games: maybe it’s because time works differently in hell, where he ended up getting saved by humans from the past, or he spent so much time down in hell humanity was destroyed and had to rebuild back up to that point, or simply forgot about him. Who can say? But at the end of the day he is still just that same marine, fighting for a people who aren’t truly his. But doomguy doesn’t care who it is he’s defending. Because all he wants to do, is kill demons.
Hugo confirmed the explanation is tied to the multiverse. The earth from the original doom games is a different earth from 2016/eternal. He traveled from one to the other. Still unclear how though. I’m hoping The Dark Ages explains it
Let's just admit, Doomguy is an incredibly powerful fictional character who faces very few challenges due to his near-indestructible nature, making him similar to Saitama in his universe.😂
No other praetor suit has been found because if the other individuals that wore one are anything like doomguy, you're never laying a hand on another suit unless you want to die, lol.
I was under the impression that the UAC modeled their tech after the slayer suit and that most of the argent tech was only really possible because they were trying to reverse engineer it
I played the original doom back in the day when it first came out in the early 90's. Back then he was just a normal space marine that fought against a never ending onslaught of demons, slowly got access to OP weapons. And under insurmountable odds, he barely made it out alive in the end. Haven't played it since then. Fast forward to now, he's superman / God with even more OP weapons. What the heck happened? Seems like there is no challenge.
Maybe the d in “D22” is the model (like how the Gundam in the original anime is the RX-78-2. Coincidentally the second unit) and the 22 is how many were made (like when I’m referring to ALL of the RX-78 Gundams I say unit 2 or unit 3 if I’m talking about the origins of the RX-78-2 and the RX-78-3. [the two surviving RX-78 units]).
The fact the suit doesn't work unless the doom slayer is wearing it badass. Reminds me of the guns from Judge Dredd how they only work if the owner is using it.
Thought it be cool for the suit to have been a blessed-holy suit and doom guy himself blessed with strength, endurance, vitality from God. Like a battle angel of sorts.
"as mysterious as the doom marine himself" A, what I believe to be a soldier (Going off the first doom game) who got themselves caught up in a situation, and now they can't back out of it.
Well depends on gear and what version of the character we talking bout kratos at peak power as in during the Norse saga without holding back may stand a chance agains the slayer I haven’t played gow 1 2 and 3 so I don’t know bout the gear but as far as I know kratos could stand a chance just depends on certain things
damn it, there was a time when doom slayer killed demons with his bare fists (because he won't find them in hell) and with his bare ass covered in the blood of the unclean, perhaps for millennia or millions of years, because in hell the concept of time practically does not matter
I think the uac wanted to hide the fact it was an unknown armour set and tried to put it on with uac soldiers but like you said the suit doesn't respond well untill doom guy wears it and when Samuel hayden probably knew this seeing how he was samurr makyr secretly and wanted to keep the suit in the coffin thing
A fantastic detail that I remembered when you said no other Praetor suits have been found, the Murauders have something very similar, but much more medieval in design
As a doom fan the suit is made from some super tough diamonds you can learn that from the lore and most likely it only works for him is probably because he was blessed with some super strength or something cause when you kill the second maybe third demon elite thing it says “does one not wish for more power” or something like that
I'm pretty sure that the armour we are going to see in Doom: The Dark Ages is the original Praetor suit. It might have been redesigned a little by the Slayer, but it should roughly be what was given to him by the Wretch
TLDR; the Preator suit is the original UAC armor from the original Doom series, but modified by a Sentinel that underwent Demonization. The suit was made completely by humans, and the demons were metaphorically or primitively explaining the Slayer's powers. "The Wretch" is not named, and since that word appears in other codex entries referring to other beings, "wretch" seems to be the Demons' catch-all term for anything that isn't a Demon, or is and doesn’t act like a Demon. As we can see from pictures of the armor, there's English on Doomguy's armor, as if it were mass produced by a corporation (gee I wonder which big bad game Corporation it could be), but the Demons' writing system was taken wholesale from the Argent D'Nur when they conquered it, so if Doomguy had been one of them, there wouldn't be English on his Armor, but runes instead. The conclusion is that *Doomguy* in 2016/Eternal *IS* the same one from Classic Doom games so, likely, this means when he got teleported to Argent D'Nur, they upgraded his already existing armor and the Wretch further upgraded, after Argent D’Nur fell, using Argent energies and some sort of runic Hell smithing techniques. Remember, Argent energy can corrupt beings and make them into Demons, which likely means, “The Wretch”, is a likely a transformed Sentinel of Argent D’Nur. Quote: “The true nature of Argent energy is explained in Doom Eternal when the Slayer goes to Nekravol, where demons torture their victims until the last flickers of hope are removed. The soul is then extracted from the victim, and the husk body mutates into a new demon.” Quote directly from Hayden himself: “The demons only utilize a portion of the resources that come from the human soul. It was the Maykrs and the Sentinel Priests who discovered and unlocked the true power of the Essence. They combined Sentinel and Hell energies together, refined it, and created... Argent.” So somewhere along the way, a Sentinel got Demonified, turned into “The Wretch” and still, somehow, retained his former self to some degree and upgraded the original UAC armor Doomguy showed up in. Mystery solved, even if it isn’t at all important to the series or the narrative the series is telling. Pretty simple A-B through line. Friendly reminder, not everything in a story needs explaining, or digging into.
Thank you for getting the lore right 👏🏼 I think D22 is the iteration of the suit. In Doom Eternal when you go to the colletion room you can see that Doom Guy periodically modifies the suit. It would seem to me the knowledge and process to create the suit was done so by a demon more advanced in ranking than the hell priests, the wretch, and only the knowledge as to how to alter or tinker with the armor is left with Doom Guy himself. I also think Doom Guy is more than capable of producing the suit of armor himself simply because he conscripted its creation to begin with.
Imagine in doom the dark ages there are gonna be other people like the doom slayer but he’s still the strongest and they all have their own preator suits but they all get killed in dark ages
The sturdy green armor worn by the DOOM Slayer in DOOM(2016) is full of detail, from seams and reinforcements to more recognizable elements like the red Praetor logo painted above the visor. However, one understated marking on the Praetor Suit has caught the attention of keen-eyed DOOM fans since the game’s release - a small white designation of “D22.” On the right shoulder guard and left-hand neckbrace on the DOOM Slayer’s character model, you can clearly see what looks like a “D” followed by the number “22.” Though the Praetor Suit is chock full of etchings and markers that seem in line with a piece of military grade equipment, the visibility of the D22 on the Slayer’s armor has prompted players to believe the designation to be some sort of in-joke or reference, possibly even a clue that explains the Suit’s background. To get to the bottom of this, we got in touch with DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal’s creative director Hugo Martin and asked him directly why D22 was chosen for the Praetor Suit. And fellow Slayers, we got an answer: “It looks cool," he explained. Another case closed for the Slayers Club! I think Hugo also commented on it during some other streams, where it boiled down to the same answer - it's just there for looks.
Is doomguy as durable as he is without the armour and can his skin be damaged or cut through like can his arm be sliced off and he Regenerates it when he absorbs argent energy from demons????

Hugo confirmed the explanation is tied to the multiverse. The earth from the original doom games is a different earth from 2016/eternal. He traveled from one to the other. Still unclear how though. I’m hoping The Dark Ages explains it
"In a foolish human expedition 🤓." I've heard saying no offense lets people know I'm not serious
I’ve always wondered if doom is just the precursor to Warhammer 40 K
I mean... The machine guns/assault rifles we get in 2016 and eternal can fire micro rockets
The way 40k is set up, nearly anything can be a precursor to 40k.
@@dutch_asocialite so who knows maybe real life is a precursor to 40k XD
@@dutch_asocialitesuffer not the unclean to live
I mean. It could quite literally be that Doom Guy is actually the Emperor after he is woken back up due to the appearance of the Chaos Gods.
Doom Guy can walk on Sun surface that strong and undistructable this suit is
Let's just admit, Doomguy is an incredibly powerful fictional character who faces very few challenges due to his near-indestructible nature, making him similar to Saitama in his universe.😂
He's one punch man
He's still way more durable than the suit
Absolutely. The suit is nothing without doomguy.
No other praetor suit has been found because if the other individuals that wore one are anything like doomguy, you're never laying a hand on another suit unless you want to die, lol.
Quality Lore here !
I really hope that we'll learn more about "the Wretch" in Doom Dark Ages
NGL, I do love my suit
you'd look better with it off tbh

No 😂
Can't wait to see if Doom Dark Ages, ends with you in the Sarcophagus
I was under the impression that the UAC modeled their tech after the slayer suit and that most of the argent tech was only really possible because they were trying to reverse engineer it
Doomguy is Link... Look into it. A hero in green, slaying monsters with a powerful sword. And D22 is Doom 2022

That’s the guy from Halo

I played the original doom back in the day when it first came out in the early 90's. Back then he was just a normal space marine that fought against a never ending onslaught of demons, slowly got access to OP weapons. And under insurmountable odds, he barely made it out alive in the end. Haven't played it since then.
Fast forward to now, he's superman / God with even more OP weapons. What the heck happened? Seems like there is no challenge.
He’s the same character. His abilities simply escalated.
Doom Guy manifested his suit through sheer force of will...
“Prey tore” one silly goofy wave pronouncing predator but somehow bad ass
It’s not called the predator suit. It’s the praetor suit.
Doom 2016 better story than eternal
Ok
Doom lore:
- rabbit dies
- man proceeds to eviscerate trillions
Doomguy + doom suit = doom slayer
Nut really. More like: doom guy + divinity machine = doom slayer
I feel like Doom: the Dark Ages is going to end with how he wound up in that sarcophagus.
[the two surviving RX-78 units]).
probably his original heavily modified armour from his original timeline before he went back in time to the current setting.
“Who made the Doom Guy’s Suit?”
Proceeds to not tell you who made the suit.
Actually, in doom eternal, using sentinel batteries, you can unlock other suits
Marauder out here like "what about my armor"
The praetor suit was clearly inspired but sentinel garb but it isn’t the same
The fact the suit doesn't work unless the doom slayer is wearing it badass. Reminds me of the guns from Judge Dredd how they only work if the owner is using it.
The first doom game had other people with that kind of armor😮
Not really. The old armor is certainly similar but it isn’t a 1 to 1 copy at all
That number indicates that there could be at least 21 more Doom slayers out there
Thought it be cool for the suit to have been a blessed-holy suit and doom guy himself blessed with strength, endurance, vitality from God. Like a battle angel of sorts.
Oh shit, i JUST remembered that i bought this game last night, fucking love this game, thx for reminding me
"as mysterious as the doom marine himself"
A, what I believe to be a soldier (Going off the first doom game) who got themselves caught up in a situation, and now they can't back out of it.
Doom is such a simple game, until you start paying attention
It’s the dark lord’s old armor maybe
Could be. The lore says it was made by “the wretch” though and we still don’t know who that is
The next game will deffinetly introduce us to the creator of the suit
“The design is very human”
Another reason why Doom Guy wipes Kratos 1v1
Well depends on gear and what version of the character we talking bout kratos at peak power as in during the Norse saga without holding back may stand a chance agains the slayer I haven’t played gow 1 2 and 3 so I don’t know bout the gear but as far as I know kratos could stand a chance just depends on certain things
I mean, both are god killers and Doom Guy doesnt really attack humans unless they attack him or his fam/pet
I left as clueless as I came
The 3d artwork in Doom is first rate. Doom Eternal maps, story line and animation are on a whole other level.
Dark ages is gonna kick ass with the lore it’ll bring
I'm guessing the reason it looks so human like is that whoever worked on it based it on his UAC-made armor from Doom 64
He has like several of them at his base and Evan taking them apart for redesigns
damn it, there was a time when doom slayer killed demons with his bare fists (because he won't find them in hell) and with his bare ass covered in the blood of the unclean, perhaps for millennia or millions of years, because in hell the concept of time practically does not matter
Anybody else think a game about Doom Guy 5v5's would be hella lit?
When he said its indestructible i think back to the first doom and how easily he can die on high difficulties xD
Praetor suit is iconic, idk why they made it sleeveless in doom eternal
I think the uac wanted to hide the fact it was an unknown armour set and tried to put it on with uac soldiers but like you said the suit doesn't respond well untill doom guy wears it and when Samuel hayden probably knew this seeing how he was samurr makyr secretly and wanted to keep the suit in the coffin thing
A fantastic detail that I remembered when you said no other Praetor suits have been found, the Murauders have something very similar, but much more medieval in design
I imagine The Dark Ages will detail how he ended up with the praetor suit
The soul is then extracted from the victim, and the husk body mutates into a new demon.”
Quote directly from Hayden himself: “The demons only utilize a portion of the resources that come from the human soul. It was the Maykrs and the Sentinel Priests who discovered and unlocked the true power of the Essence. They combined Sentinel and Hell energies together, refined it, and created... Argent.”
So somewhere along the way, a Sentinel got Demonified, turned into “The Wretch” and still, somehow, retained his former self to some degree and upgraded the original UAC armor Doomguy showed up in.
Mystery solved, even if it isn’t at all important to the series or the narrative the series is telling. Pretty simple A-B through line.
Friendly reminder, not everything in a story needs explaining, or digging into.
The alloy is indestructible
Doom guy destroys it in eternal to make his own
the design is very human
It’s master chiefs armor. The covenant knew he was a demon. They took care of the covenant and now they’re fighting through demons
Thank you for getting the lore right 👏🏼
I think D22 is the iteration of the suit.
Before you Rip and Tear, make sure to wear a helmet.
His armor is one in the same as the miradors. They served the sentinels together until the war in which doom slayer was put into his deep sleep
No, his armor was made by “the wretch”. Hugo also confirmed that it wasn’t made by Valen nor Hayden.
I wonder if doom the dark ages will explain this
I’m willing to bet on it
Imagine finding out that the wretch created a D23 suit 😅
The doom marine is just Masterchief who fell through universes.
Wait till Doom Slayer discovers Hazbin Hotel (There all cooked)
For a second i thought title said dad lore. 😂
So basically.
We don't know.
"The suit is ancient"
Proceeds to have modern design elements and specifically modern emglish enscribed on it.
Yep. One can very easily add English inscriptions to the suit after the fact. The argenta appear to speak English, they’re very ancient.
Imagine in doom the dark ages there are gonna be other people like the doom slayer but he’s still the strongest and they all have their own preator suits but they all get killed in dark ages
Kinda just seems like they added that lore after the suit look was made so they just forced the lore into that mold
Probably sent back in time from the future
The sturdy green armor worn by the DOOM Slayer in DOOM(2016) is full of detail, from seams and reinforcements to more recognizable elements like the red Praetor logo painted above the visor. However, one understated marking on the Praetor Suit has caught the attention of keen-eyed DOOM fans since the game’s release - a small white designation of “D22.”
On the right shoulder guard and left-hand neckbrace on the DOOM Slayer’s character model, you can clearly see what looks like a “D” followed by the number “22.” Though the Praetor Suit is chock full of etchings and markers that seem in line with a piece of military grade equipment, the visibility of the D22 on the Slayer’s armor has prompted players to believe the designation to be some sort of in-joke or reference, possibly even a clue that explains the Suit’s background.
To get to the bottom of this, we got in touch with DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal’s creative director Hugo Martin and asked him directly why D22 was chosen for the Praetor Suit. And fellow Slayers, we got an answer:
“It looks cool," he explained.
Another case closed for the Slayers Club!
I think Hugo also commented on it during some other streams, where it boiled down to the same answer - it's just there for looks.
I’ve seen the interview now lol. Still fun to speculate and almost certainly will be explored in the dark ages
Is doomguy as durable as he is without the armour and can his skin be damaged or cut through like can his arm be sliced off and he Regenerates it when he absorbs argent energy from demons????
He’s very durable but the the limits to that durability are unclear. All we know is that he is killable. The demons could kill him, he’s just too badass
Virtually indestructible, man inside, very destructible
