    What a moving and beautiful thing it is to see this, for Roses like myself who can't visit in person. Seeing this brings me closer to distant ancestors and the mystery of my origins.

    I'm a Rose as well although DNA has concluded that my ancestors are part of the clan but not directly related to the barons of Kilravock. No matter. The spousal unit and I spent 5 days there last summer while I researched a book I'm working on about Kilravock and the Jacobite Uprising. I then found out about Arthur Rose, and voila!, another book in the making. It is truly an inspirational place. I just adore it.

    Descendant of the Rose clan on my mothers side. Visited at behest of my grandmother in 2006, while at uni in Canterbury. A truly magical place. The only evidence of my journey there are a few stones from the river and a piece of the monkey puzzle. Hope to return someday

    Thank you for sharing. My grandmother whose maiden name was Rose told me often growing up how her ancestors came from Scotland and landed in NC then migrated westward. Unfortunately, I was not able to visit Kilravock while my grandmother was alive; she would have loved to have seen it. One striking feature of the Roses of my grandmother's family was many of them were tall and strong. My great uncles (all 4 of them) were at least 6ft or taller. Not sure if it is a trait; however, they were all good quality and honest. My grandmother was known to never tell a lie; not sure if that is another trait in the Roses. I do miss her a lot.

    I'm from the U.S. too. Kilravock has been within our family stories for most of my life. I was fortunate enough to visit Kilravock in 2004 with my mother who was a friend of Elizabeth Rose, Baroness of Kilravock. Then we went again in 2010 (when these pictures were taken) to do research on a book about Arthur Rose I am currently writing. If you can ever manage to get there, do it. I truly felt as if I had come home.

    My great great great great grand father Donald Rose, his 2 sons and wife came to Nova Scotia in 1780 something was granted 2000 acres of land. We lived on that land for over 200 years. We have the docs and line info going back quite a bit. If I every had the chance I would buy the castle.

      +PtahXHi Steven noticed you're a Rose from Canada; not sure if you're from Nova Scotia area. However, some of the Roses in my family who lived in NC, TN, and KY married into the Le'Geres who migrated from the Nova Scotia area to the US in the late 1800s. Just thought I would ask if your family also married into the same set of Le'Geres

      I'll take a look at the tree in the next while and see if we are long lost relatives. We came through Nova Scotia from the States at one point but their is a larger line of Roses that are predominant in the east of Canada. So far it doesn't look like we are of the same line as they are but who knows as we go further back 😄 Either way it's always good to hear from another leg of the Rose family -

    John Rose was my grandfather descendant of Rose Clan; hello to all others who are descendants of Rose clan. Constant and True is our crest. Mary, Queen of Scots, was received at the castle in 1562, and Prince Charles Edward Stuart was entertained four days before the battle of Culloden. His enemy, the Duke of Cumberland, visited soon after the battle, and Robert Burns came here in September 1787. It is a Category A listed building and is no longer occupied by the Rose Clan. The Castle is no longer part of the Rose Clan estate; in 1984 the Castle was transferred to a charitable Christian Trust. It was operated as bed and breakfast accommodation for a while but is no longer open to the public.

    I am a descendant of the "Rose family". My late great grand mother was Ada Porter & she married James Dalrymple. I have been to the family castle about 10 years ago now, & I had just missed Elizabeth. However she was not well at that time. I would love to hear from anyone else. I understand that the Rose family are stretched right across the globe

    Hello - on the spur of the moment I thought I would just have a brief look at Kilravock. I too am connected with the Roses of Kilravock but also Edinburgh and I see there are two comments asking about Arthur Rose - he was my grandfather.Mary Rose Somerville

    • @tcher48
      @tcher48  8 лет назад

      +Josie Curran The Arthur Rose I'm researching died in 1714. He was spying on the Jacobite army garrisoned in Inverness with a "trusted" friend. Who just happened to let the Jacobites in on his presence. He was shot and killed just shy of one year after his ransom from an Algerian pirate who held him captive for 12 years. Truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction of which I'm writing about Arthur.

      You were able to visit inside the castle? The last time I talked to the Kilravock Trust, they said they were closing off the castle to tours and the B and B that was there. I hope it's open again. I was really sad that they closed it. This is what replaced their website which had all kinds of good information on it. :-(

    Loved this video! I lived on the estate for a good part of my child hood, maybe 7 years and my memories are all good,it was such an amazing place to be a child and grow up! Both my parents worked on the estate. Is it true that the estate is no longer open to the public?? I've always wanted to go back, the gardens were amazing!!!

    Sadly, I just heard that Kilravock is no longer open to visitors. I wrote to the head of the Christian Trust for some historical fact checking. Her husband wrote back and told me they were no longer at Kilravock. His wife had retired and the estate closed to visitors. How sad. Evidently, the costs incurred were so great they could not keep the B and B open. I am hoping they are taking whatever savings they have from not having to pay insurance and the nonsense of taxes to improve and preserve the estate. I am forever grateful I was able to visit twice and have memories which will last me a lifetime. I do feel like a part of me has been disconnected though. *sigh*

    I wish I knew. I've tried contacting the Trust that is in possession of the castle, but no one has answered my emails. I was shocked to see the website taken apart and saddened as well. I have no idea what's going on there. It makes me curious though. I had always hoped to go again and walk the grounds and climb the tower to see the gooseberry bush at the base of the flag pole. Maybe someday.
