The Foreign Origins of Scottish Clans
Scottish clans are as synonymous with Scotland as whisky and tartan, yet many Scottish clans have foreign origins. The origins of these clans speaks to the invasions and migrations into Scotland over the centuries.
Clan Fraser is a clan that has a few different branches across Scotland. The name is first recorded in 1160AD, and the Fraser clan motto is "Je Suis Prest" (I Am Ready). This motto speaks to the origin of the clan. It is thought that the Frasers are descended from Norman knights in the Anjou district of France.
One theory is that their name comes from the French Freseau family who themselves originated from a fierce tribe in Roman Gaul called the Friselii. This tribes name itself comes from the French word fraise, meaning strawberry, as there was an abundance of strawberries in the area that they lived in.
One notable Fraser in Scottish history was Simon Fraser, who fought alongside William Wallace and Robert the Bruce during the First Scottish War of Independence. In 1306, he was captured by English forces, and given the same punishment as Wallace, hung, drawn, and quartered, with his head stuck on a spike on London Bridge alongside Wallace’s.
Another Scottish clan with a fascinating history is Clan MacLeod, associated with the region in and around the Isle of Skye. The MacLeod’s are said to have a Viking or Norse origin, as they are descended from a Viking ancestor, Leod, who was the son of Olaf the Black, King of the Isles. Living in the 13th century, Leod was a very powerful chieftain.
Clan Stewart is perhaps one of the most famous clans, considering it’s connection to the royal throne for centuries. Initially spelt Stewart it later evolved into the House of Stuart, with the first Stewart monarch being Robert II of Scotland in the 14th century. Stuart’s reigned on the Scottish, and later British and Irish thrones, for centuries until the death of Queen Anne in 1714.
The clan itself can be traced back to Walter Fitz Alan, an English baron. Walter moved to Scotland under the reign of David I, and the name Stewart is said to come from Walter’s title as the High Steward of Scotland. Walter himself however was a descendant of the Earl of Brittany who came over with William the Conqueror’s forces during the Norman invasion of 1066.

Clan Keith is a great story! A Hessian warrior (or proto-Hessian/Chatti) who found his way to Scotland, fought in the wars against the Danes/Norwegians and killed their general named Camus, in the battle of Barrie. For this, the King of Scots dripped his fingers in the bloody body and drew them down the Hessian's shield - From that day, he was known as the Camus Slayer and given the lands at Keith, whence he and his kin took their name. To this day, they say the stripes on the Keith coat of arms are there to remind us of our brave and mighty ancestor.

They were also mostly left handed and built their castles/ staircases to accomodate this, so that they would not be at a disadvantage if attacked on home ground. As I understand it, this clan sprang from a Viking named Ivar, and the McIvers were essentially cousins of the Campbells. My immigrant ancestor was Andrew C. McIver, born in Argyll in 1716. And unlike some people claim, McIvers did have their own chieftains. We will never forget.

If I did my homework right, the McIvor name originated somewhere in Argyll. I think the battle of Altimarlach is one of the reason some McIvors went to Caithness with the Campbells to thrash some Sinclairs. Emigrated to Canada in around 1860. Nice to hear about other McIvers or McIvors loose on the world. Best Regards: Andrew R McIvor

Although many foreign outlaws & colonizers came to Scotland to settle they quickly became absorbed & assimilated into ancient Scots Pictish-Gaelic society, till the point that their non-Scottish bloodlines eventually vanished within 2 centuries.
Thus the foreign clan name endured intact, yet the foreign progenitors/originators disappeared thoroughly into the established indigenous populations, till the bloodstream of their distant descendants barely revealed the genetic stamp of those first foreign colonizers (less than 1 percent of the DNA of their far off Pictish-Gaelic offshoots!).
The only exceptions would be around the northern coastal rim of the upper Highlands, the Orkneys & Shetlands along, with a lesser degree, the Hebrides, where the Norse Viking influence was strong & comprises up to one third of the DNA of many of the local inhabitants, as many a tall blonde from those areas can attest.

The Clan Chisholm, are of Norman descent, & are believed to have been given land in the border regions near Hawick, by King David I. I was able to trace my Ancestry back to Canonbie in Dumfriesshire, to the late 1600s. A number of the family were found to have married into other local border Clans. The Scott's, Elliot's, & the Armstrong's, who's names are associated with the Border Reivers.
The earliest document I have seen, is the Ragman Roll, 1296. Where the Scottish nobles, swore fealty, to King Edward I. Attached are 90 seals, of which one of them relates to Sir Richard de Chisholm, Count of Roxburgh. His descendants went on to fight the English at Bannockburn, Nevilles Cross & Culloden.
Many of the later Chisholm's went to the Americas, to seek their fortunes. Some unfortunately were associated with the running of Plantations in Jamaica. Chisholm House was purchased in 1826 by William Chisholm, from the money he made in the Caribbean.
It would certainly be interesting to see the Chisholm Clan, get a mention, in one of your Celtic History videos.

Campbells arose from MacIvers. MacIvers are known as 'The Grandsons of Iver'. Possibly Iver the Boneless , son of Ragnar Lothbrok, both Vikings of History Channel fame.
Iver's daughter Laliva married a Galgael prince Sidroc and Clan Iver was born.

The McMaster Clan? Hard to find information. My understanding they are also associated with MacInnes and Buchanan. What I’ve learned is they were 3 brothers who chose McMaster, meaning son of master. They were not nice and asked to leave Scotland and went to Ireland, where they were sent back to Scotland. Finally leaving for America, Canada, and Australia. While in Edinburgh I got a clan history and found our tartan. Same in Dublin. Somehow not as much information here in the USA.

Clan Hay (Chief is Lord High Constable of Scotland) came from northern France under the name of "de La Haye"

  • @Thehaystack7999
    @Thehaystack7999 6 месяцев назад

Clan Hay. William II de la Hay, is said to have come with William the Conqueror and the Hay family were loyal to the Scottish crown, and fought along side King Robert the Bruce, and maintained titles such as Earl of Errol. And Constable over the Realm of Scotland. It seems like there is a legend of a man called Hay and his two sons which fought off a raiding party of Danes at about 950 AD. However the earliest record is of William II de la Hay coming from Normandy, one of 21 Knights which came to Scotland. The family was included in the first parliament, was then considered a traitor to the English crown and Hay was loyal and fought side by side with The Bruce. The Hay Clan was loyal to the Stewarts and were outcasted as confederates with the Jacobites. I seem to keep seeing the same small information from the Hay Clan, I hope there is collateral histories which include William II de la Hay and William the Conqueror’s knights, such as their mission and goals and relationships and religion.

You asked for stories of Scottish clan/name ancestry. Ours (Gladstone) may count …I hope! The story passed down to us (that my father had from his father,, who had it from his father before him) is that our branch of the family comes originally from an English Jew who went to Scotland when England’s king expelled all Jews who wouldn’t convert to Christianity: the “choice” be8ng to convert, to be executed, or to flee the country. (History documents that this expulsion did indeed occur, in the year 1290). So our ancestor hid out in Scotland, and he and his descendants lived there for generations until some went to the Russian Empire (as it was then) be use the Tsar of Russia was sending all through Europe to find skilled craftsmen to build up his emplire. So our ancestors went to Eastern Europe, and there we lived (as builders to the Tsar) for centuries until 1920 when my father’s father came to America (after his term in the Russian Army), amd here we are.
