  • Air force police shut down a street in London to allow two C-17 heavy transport planes to land, delivering helicopters ahead of Joe Biden's visit to the UK. The VH-3D Sea King helicopter transporting the President will adopt the call-sign 'Marine One'.
    Joe Biden is expected to meet King Charles III to congratulate him on his coronation, before flying to Lithuania for the NATO summit. The President will use one of several VH-3D Sea Kings with the US Marine Corps as Marine One to travel around London. The US Army will provide Chinooks to support the operation.

      The C130, C17 and other military cargo planes are designed with extreme amounts of takeoff lift. They often deliver/pickup from grass or dirt ad hoc air fields so are designed for very short takeoff and landing. I’ve done many flights in the C130 and never failed to be amazed by it. When not loaded, the distance defies belief. Like private prop plane takeoff distances. Heavily loaded everything changes pretty dramatically but still, they can use almost any airfield.

Aircraft are not allowed to start their engines at the gate as items on the ground can be sucked in (including humans) and the jet wash from using reverse thrust to move an aircraft would be extremely dangerous and could damage the jet bridge and destroy windows in the terminal building. Once the aircraft has been pushed back and out onto the ramp, they ask ground control for permission to start engines and only when authorised do they initiate the startup sequence.

      @@alaska3300 it's not a case of being applied to people due to their status - it is a safety issue. Commercial flights do not start engines at the gate due to the very real dangers posed by doing so - dangers that don't change depending on who is flying on the aircraft. As the Security Brigade is neither a commercial flight, nor is it at the gate, but reversing an aircraft out on the taxiway away from buildings, it is relatively ok to do what they did, as long as those on the ground and in the aircraft are aware of, and take notice to mitigate those dangers. The US presidents aircraft does not pull up at the commercial air-bridges either, so it would not apply in those circumstances - but you simply don't attempt to reverse a commercial aircraft out of a gate because the jet blast WILL destroy parts of the buildings and jet-bridge - and it doesn't matter who is on the aircraft - that would be an incredibly stupid, illegal and irresponsible thing to do.

    My last posting before taking early retirement from the RAF in 1983 was as Officer Commanding Aircraft Servicing Flight at RAF Northolt. In that time, Ronald Reagan came to visit the Queen and Maggie Thatcher. Marine 1 was brought in to Notholt by a C-141 Starlifter and was stored in "my hangar".
    An amusing event: One day I came back to the hangar from Station HQ and went to enter one of the man doors at one end of the hangar. It was being guarded by an armed US Marine sentry and he wanted to prevent me from entering. I got up real close and pointed out that this was "my hangar" and that there was no way that he and his gun was going to prevent me from returning to my office. I'm quite a little guy but there must have been something about my approach that caused him to think twice and I was allowed to enter and walk past Marine 1 in the corner of the hangar.

      @@327Erich I don’t know how to reply to your comment, since you obviously are not getting the bigger picture. California for example. People are held to buy electric cars but are not allowed to charge them, plus these cars waste more resources and create more harmful gases and waste more energy by building them than a regular gas engine can possible create in its whole lifetime. Non of them needs to fly to GB for a meeting, that could be held online. Biden is probably not the only one coming in with this massive amount of machinery and massive waste of energy and with this massive burning of fuel that neither you or I or a whole small town creates in a year

    • @327Erich
      @327Erich Год назад

      @sonofthedesert3132 EVs do not create "more harmful gases" than ICEs produce. That is a total myth with ZERO truth, regardless of whatever abstract comparison someone wants to make. I'm all about it if leaders are willing to meet virtually, but there's an element of realism in the fact that world leaders DO still travel and meet in person some of the time, and the fallacy of attacking someone for using imperfect technology to push for more efficient and cleaner technology is a card that's typically played by political opponents for obvious political reasons. It's disingenuous....maybe not coming from you in particular, but certainly in most cases.
