It's rare that you have that luxury. In that case the freight train was stopped and it was fairly short, so the locos were able to get it rolling in reverse somewhat quickly. If the train was heavier or the passenger faster there would still have been a serious impact. Most of the time freight trains take a long time to get rolling.

I think that way is trelease the brake pedal and try to leave the road into snow. There is no bumper on this road and 100-200 meters (4..7+ seconds) to understand situation so I see no problems to do that (excluding the lack of brains. I understand it's bad to write this about died driver but he broke too much. Broken expensive trains were result of working time of many people and railroad trafic pause is lost time for many people too.).

I can explain, the truck driver was still on the track when the second train came. And after hitting part of the debris slammed into the first train thereby derailing it.

Very simple, one of the train had to wait in some track while other train was going to an another divergent secondary track to get back on the main track. Yes usually happens when train drivers are sleeping or levers to move tracks were not moved automaically or manually at the correct time.
It's all the game of timing. Like i dont now that you have noticed that but if you see some first footages there is different tracks from one track. Every train has its specific time to go and where to go. Just in that mismanagement accidents causes
The Train Dispatcher is the one that gives the all clear signal and what time the train is clear to go. If they're wrong the Engineers & Conductors pay the price.

I have a friend who was an engineer that got hurt when the train engine caught fire and he was able to save the other engineers and conductor by getting them to jump from the engine while it was moving and when he was carrying out the conductor they had to jump from the side rail and he got broken ribs, a punctured lung and broken hip from impact. I also had another friend who was linking train cars together in the yard and the one he was on derailed crushed him. It was awful! They were only able to bury a piece of his hand. It was fully loaded and it pretty much desintegrated his entire body. I think about him all the time. Their Dads and my Dad were best friends so we all grew up together. Their Dads were Railroaders so they followed them into that industry as I followed mine into the Food Service and Customer Service industry.

I believe the last one with the Canadian Via train happened at the Thamesville yard. I understand the other loco was shunting grain cars to the local elevator. A last minute radio call to the Via train gave them enough time to slow and stop while the shunter reversed to give them room.
There's a couple of those collisions where you could see people jumping out of the engines and not sure that's always the best idea because you're gonna have to get a long way from that track in order keep a train car or two from piling up on top of you.
These are mostly older videos, from the 80s to early 2000s. Today, PTC, ATS, or another equivalent system would have stopped these before they occurred.
You have better odds of winning the Powerball than having a train land on you after jumping. I dare say the odds are literally zero, as a speed low enough to allow you to jump is not fast enough to topple a train.
I keep wondering why some railracts are single, it should be partnered for opossite direction. They may be impoverished with money for that, thus this is happening.
