      Mark Harrison True, but nobody knew that for sure at the time. A Russian sub came horrifically close to launching its nukes during the crisis. The Kremlin gave subs the authority to launch if they decided they should. This sub had zero contact with anyone and assumed WW3 broke out when they were getting depth charges dropped on them. 3 officers had to agree to launch. One refused (Vasilj Arkopov). He literally saved the world. It was so intense that a fist fight almost broke out. Amazing story.

      True. These 13 days of the Cuban Missile Crisis was probably one of the scariest moments in US history. No one knew what was gonna happen and the missiles could've launch at any given moment.

    I was eleven years old at the time. The nuclear war drills at school were conducted regularly. People started building bomb shelters in their basements or living in them entirely. The thought that a nuclear missile was going to drop out the sky and wipe out civilization was a reality to us.

    For the doubters ( and at one time I was one of them), John F. Kennedy proved hIs true ability as President. He was being encouraged by military leaders to use this situation to invade Cuba. There is little doubt now this would have launched us into war, and very possibly, nuclear conflict. Patiently, Kennedy carefully deliberated the results of such a precipitous action. Instead he initiated an embargo, giving the Soviet Union a chance to respectfully withdraw. In my opinion, he earned his greatness as President with this momentous decision.

      @@markharrison2544 That is true but this exchange forced them to look at the situation from the position of the other instead of just their own. Not many leaders can do that and Kennedy was one such leader. Yes, I believe the Soviet Union was protecting a client state. I also believe that No American government could permit the missiles to remain if they wanted to maintain their legitimacy. But you have to look beyond and to the end game. Anyone can start a war. Not many can avoid one when it comes so close.

My mom was feeding my sister while sitting on the couch and my dad & great grandma were transfixed on every word JFK uttered. I stood in the doorway of my bedroom unnoticed for almost the entire broadcast until my mom noticed me. I was shaking…scared to death that we’d all die that night. That night, with my sisters cradle in their bedroom, I slept between my mom & dad. The next morning…a Tuesday…I was kept home from kindergarten. JFK was a great man ,undoubtedly the last independent president of USA. It's a shame that nowadays he is associated with the assassination more than his actions... For instance-in related videos- "A nation remembers- Nov 23 1963" . Let's rather mention his energy , wisdom and the fact that he was one of two presidents who started their own currency (non-federal-after 1913). The other was Lincoln (who was also assassinated) .This is not a coincidence. They both were representing the people and their rights ,which didn't suit the bankers' elite and the secret societies. Now,50 years after 1963 ,USA is no longer a free country. Freedom is only artificial.
    Thanks for the great video!

    The Presidium made mistakes during Kennedy's administration till they realised that we'd never 'swap' West Berlin, even for a non-nuclear Cuba. The Crisis matured both sides, but we can thank JFK for keeping our hotheads from invading Cuba again.

      Nixon would have listened to Gen. LeMay and the rest of the hawks in the cabinet who wanted an air strike. They didn't understand that there aren't winners in nuclear war. Kennedy did. He used his experience in the South Pacific, and his lessons from the Bay of Pigs in this situation. His caution saved the world.

    If you say '1000 miles' it does not sound so serious as saying '1000 nautical miles'. When the miles are nautical you know you are in it. What is the difference between an offensive and a defensive weapon?

    • @ironcito1101
      @ironcito1101 8 лет назад

      The distinction is blurry, but I would say that a defensive weapon is one designed to counter other weapons. For example, surface-to-air missiles, anti-tank rockets, things like that. Of course, most if not all weapons can be used offensively or defensively, depending on the user's intentions.

      If its followed by a consonant its "Cuba," if its followed by a vowel its "Cuber," Its called an intrusive R, I have the same accent feature. I inherited it from my family despite not getting their non-rhotic accent. I tried hard to say my "er" endings, but I didn't notice that I put an "er" on words that end in an "uh" sound if they're followed by a vowel until someone pointed it out to me later in life. It works like this. "my idea was best, but your ide-er is better."

    • @brianevans6328

      As one of Irish decent JFK would likely pronounce words that end with vowels as though they ended with an r. Scotch-Irish folks in the Appalachians do the same thing. Those of English decent have a tendency to do the opposite, they don't pronounce the r even if it is there. They will speak of Prince Chahls.

As the crisis heated up he was in his Aircraft with atomic bombs in England waiting for the word to go. He told my Mum if she hears the Squadron take off, we lived near the base, she was to shoot me and my Sister, then herself.
