I quote Scott Hryciuk from a comment in the song's video here in RUclips:
“Constance is my mom. Today - December 4th is her birthday - she is 88. She is the nurse in the photo. She is in a long term care home and I have not seen her since early March of this year due to COVID-19. Unfortunately the press release is incorrect. Courtney’s grandmother died in 2020 and she wrote the beautiful lyrics to honor her grandmother. Dylan’s grandmother is still living and has been suffering from dementia for several years. Dylan created the video imagery to honor his grandmother and her struggles at this time in her life.
Mom goes by Connie to those that know her. Today her proper name of Constance is more meaningful. Dylan from Versa Films is my son. I am thankful to Courtney and Spiritbox for having the courage to tackle a subject like this. Courtney: I am sorry for the loss of your grandmother. I am touched by the comments from everyone that has been through this. As the son, I know how it affects me - everyday seeing your mother not remember you. Counting the times she remembers your name. As parents we don't always see or realize the impact these circumstance and this disease has on the grandchildren. Dylan, Courtney and all the comments show that the pain runs deep within the families. For me it is tough to watch this video. It is harder to live with or to have lived with this in real life. Words cannot begin to describe. Thank you to everyone for their comments as hard as they were to publicly display. It's amazing Dylan. It's amazing Courtney. It's amazing Spiritbox. Constance is proud. I am proud”.
This song is pure gold.
That was exactly what I thought the song was about. I watched my grandmother become increasingly detached from reality, to the point that she couldn't recognize her own children or where she was. The shot where the face in the photograph became blurred really got to me.
I’m not crying, you are.
I administer medications to the dementia and psychotic elderly here in Aus for 6 years now and it can be a really fun wing/ward but sometimes its so horrific for family witnessing the mental and behaviour decline of their loved ones. It must be horrible on so many levels and I can't count the amount of times I've seen people leave rooms crying. You never know how much mental/emotional strength anyone actually has until you witness something like progressed dementia of a loved ones.
I'm going through this with my grandmother right now and it's been pretty bad for about a year now. Thanks due to some relatives she's in a memory assistance facility literally 1 block away from my home, but we still can't spend time with her due to this lockdown. I can talk to her over the phone, but I think that confuses her even more since she can't see who she's talking to, and she'll often forget who I am mid conversation. It's one of the saddest, most infuriating things I've experienced in my life. I feel incapable of being able to do anything about it, and it's all compounded when people tell you that you're some sort of monster for not wanting your 92 year old grandmother to die while locked up away from family.
Sorry to rant / share too much
@@jeffjensen8 @Jeff Jensen I know how you feel. The worse it gets, the harder it is to be around them and pretend it's ok. I remember a few *almost* conversations where just a bit through it, I, my uncles, or even my mother had become her late husband in her mind... Or insisting that she needed to be somewhere for very important reasons that she was never able to finish describing. The end, before I finally accepted that she was gone, was the worst. I'm still ashamed to say that she would probably have been better leaving us sooner.
My tears aren't ready to be activated for the 3rd time in a week, but I can't miss a Kardavox episode.
I listened to this song once on my own and with a few times with reactors...every time, I cry. Such a beautiful song.
I feel this. Heavy. 😂
Only your third time in a week? I think I'm up to like 50 and I still tear up. A masterpiece.
I listened to it the first time and now the 8th time from different reactions and havent cried once. I guess everyone is built differently
@@zerozeeros That's great! It does hit everyone differently for sure. This one hit me on a personal level. I usually don't just cry at a song, but the content of the song and the video reminded me too much of my grandmother. 12 years of watching her slowly forget our family sucks ass, and this song helped me just grieve.
Song is so devastating, I tear up every time.
Makes me think about fly tipping
@@sodgape that's deep
"I've seen this enough times I won't tear up..."
Wtf, on the title screen???
If you want to know why she sounds as emotionally soft and vulnerable as she does, watch the video and follow the story, then notice that she's been crying through it. It's personal to her and also to the video's director.
I'm glad that I wasn't the only one who noticed that.
There are 100s of reactions out there that do that, but this is a vocal analysis by someone who understands how she does what she does. Not trying to stir a pot here just putting my 2 cents. He mentioned in the video it was hard for him to concentrate on the vocals. I imagine after a few watches it'll click for him, but I also can imagine he is trying to concentrate and give his input on her vocals primarily. Imagine you are a chef and you specialized in herbs. He's here to tell you about that rosemary sprig in your amazing steak dinner and why it's so necessary. He knows that steak is juicy and tender, but his life is that rosemary sprig. I agree this shit hits hard and powerful and the video is a work of art on its own, but I don't come here for that. I am eagerly awaiting this guy to do Constance for more of a dive into the video: ruclips.net/video/UajswOUDfOQ/видео.html
I don't listen to this type of music or know of soiritbix but this music video reminded me of my grandma and her dementia and skitzo episodes.......not to sound like an asshole or anything but this is exactly what it would sound like...an emotional rollercoaster
Except for the fact that anything and everything you actually SEE in this video has literally nothing to do with the sounds you hear, they are 100% recorded separately and then lined up on top of each other. Sorry to be that guy and ruin it for everyone. 💩🔫
I love seeing people get lost in music like this.
Spiritbox makes it easy!
Me: 😢
Everyone else watching video:😢
Mark: “I wanna be on broadwaaay!”
the first listen is emotional but when you get what the song is about you cry
i cried the first time.
I've watched every single reaction video to this song on RUclips so far, cried through every one of them, and yours is the one I've been waiting for the most.
Same
Likewise. I love how this dude gets completely immersed in the music.
Her singing is like being coddled by a warm, soft, fluffy blanket that somehow gives you chills. Another way to describe it is buttery smooth af
Anyone else start to break when you see the grandma smile and hug her grandchild.... that’s when the cry shivers activate
That wash of sound
Is exactly the greatest most perfect
Measure of bliss
In metal that can be made.
There’s just something that makes my skin chill.
And my emotions come in strong with extreme intensity.
Cry every time I hear this
It hits home
Exactly!
Low key, this is also one of the best music videos I have seen in a long time. Really WATCH the video one of these times and see the little details added.
Swell and breakdown is kinda how I describe this track. Its like letting air out of a balloon and stopping and then at the very last bit of air letting it go to fly. Such a pleasure to the ears.
This actually made a lot of sense
Courtney's grandmother passed away this year after a long battle with dementia. This song is about her. It moves me to tears every time because I feel like I can hear the grief in her voice.
oh god this song again ok here we go
Hopefully you haven’t run outta tissues yet :*(
My thoughts exactly lol
You're like a refined version of Jack Black in School of Rock. Love it. Subscribed.
Every friggin time... freaking tears. My God this hits so hard. I just visited my Mom's dementia facility to drop off her Christmas present today. These feels are like a mountain.
"demanding that i meditate and be introspective" is a perfect way to describe this song, theres just something about the feeling it conveys that just makes you... think
I love hearing what you have to say. But in this video, I loved where you were speechless. I absolutely agree that Spiritbox does it the best.
Fans of this NEED to check out HOLY FAWN's Death Spells album. They're an experimental post rock/metal, shoegaze band and the whole album is gorgeous. Some of the best cleans in the game, fantastic screams, and hyper-melodic wall of noise choruses like Mark mentioned liking. Seriously one of my all-time favorite band finds.
Oh yeah...this is going on the playlist. Thank you =)
Holy fawn is phenomenal. Fun fact, the bassist in HF is also the bassist in my band Kardashev!
@@KardavoxAcademy BRUH that is indeed a fun fact
@@KardavoxAcademy Whoa!! that's awesome!!
Chase. Thank you! I love finding music I would probably not find otherwise. Thank you!!!
Man this song is so good, she sings it so well, that instrument breakdown nearing the end is just so heavy (also with emotions).
Found this online:
The authorship of “Constance” is mainly attributed to Spiritbox frontwoman Courtney LaPlante. She wrote it during 2020’s coronavirus pandemic. And due to the resultant lockdowns, she was unable to be with her grandmother during her passing, in addition to not being able to attend her funeral. So that’s whom the song itself actually serves as a tribute to.
Meanwhile the titular “Constance” is actually a reference to Constance Hryciuk, the grandmother of Dylan Hryciuk, the director of the track’s music video. She also passed away in 2020, to dementia.. And basically, Spiritbox used the occasion of the release of this song to honor both of these artists’ grandmothers.
Which makes it even more beautiful for me as I've lost my grandmother to alzheimer's.
Dylan's father commented on the original video that his mother is still alive and the video was actually released on her 88th birthday. She has, however, been battling dementia for many years.
The chills... Man this song is strong
BTW just the day after this track came out I watched the whole 6 hours of Everything at the end of time and that was a hell of a ride (emotionally)
I've lost family to dementia this song sums up my feeling's and it's helping me deal with things. Over the last 9 years I have lost most of my family members in December and I came across this song and it broke me. This song has a special place in my heart. Great reaction to a awesome song. Just subbed peace ✌️ from Stan the Alaskan.
Love how the explosion of energy at 5:22 washes over everyone.
An absolutely masterpiece, this song.
Not sure if anyone else has shared this with you yet but here's an excerpt from an interview with Courtney about the song:
"Due to border shut downs, I was not able to say goodbye to my grandmother Phyllis, to whom the song is in tribute, or attend her funeral. I always promised her that I would sing at her memorial service, because she always requested a 'pretty song with none of that scary screaming.' I hoped writing this song with no 'scary screaming' in it would help me find a sense of closure."
"Dylan (video director) wrote his video concept to honor his grandmother, Constance to whom the video is in tribute. Our music videos usually have a horror element to them, and we wanted to explore a different side of horror: the horror of feeling like your mind is betraying you, due to a long battle with dementia. With Dylan's permission, we named the song 'Constance' to immortalize her story."
I cried again just reading this even though I knew the context already. Haven't seen these exact quotes
I watched this video a week ago and i am still crying.
Yo this is exactly how I look when I listen to every Spiritbox song, but especially Constance. I know you wanted to cry from the beauty of this sound, let it out! Great video I'm glad I found this channel.
Quickly becoming my favorite reactions content - Well done, Mark!
Thanks bro - glad you dig it!
This is my first video of yours.
Bro, Im in love with ur friendly energy and NOT BORING vocal theory!!
Im so glad, that you are showing everything with exaples and excersice!!
Big up from Russia!
* *sounds of clicking like and surbscribe buttons* *
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching!
This song reminded me of my grandma...she's 93 now , super emotional song
The song is a dedication to Courtney's grandmother that passed away from dementia
Just want to say you are one of the most informative reactors I’ve seen. I don’t regular reaction channels, but when there are songs I think have a next-level impact, I like to check out others reacting to it. You bring a fantastic analytical perspective on the few songs I’ve searched out that you reacted to. Please keep on keeping on!
This popped up on my feed 👏👏👏 Well done my friend. Great work on this one.
Yo, thanks so much man! Love your videos!
13:17 Collectively sums up my feelings of the song. Hurts so good.
Bruh I cant right now.. this was for her grandmother.
No it wasn't 😂
@@sodgape It was though. She wrote the lyrics for her grandmother and even sung the song without any screaming sections because she didn't like when she did that.
@@iladiesnutzoyochin The lyrics are dog shit but the song itself is great 👍
@@sodgape that's irrelevant to you saying the song wasn't for her grandmother lol
@@iladiesnutzoyochin you're irrelevant
I think something that is missing from a lot of these analyses/reactions (there’s a lot to unpack in this song so I’m not attacking anyone) is the breakdown. How it trends off from these cords that align with much of the rest of the song into these very diminished and demonic sounding cords that deviate from the norm. Two of my grandparents have died from dementia and the breakdown captures that gradual descent into a loss of self and normality perfectly.
I’m not sure if this was intentionally done or if the band created this breakdown based on how they felt, but I hope they know how much I appreciate this song and especially the emotional that went into that breakdown. It’s more than “brutal” sounding. It captures the very pathology of this disease.
My heart goes out to everyone impacted by this terrible disease. I’m working towards studying it in the lab some day. I hope you all are staying safe.
This songs proofs yet another time how good Spiritbox is. There are certain moments within this song where I thought: "Man, a scream here would be dope". But then the instruments push forward and resolve this pressure. Best example might be at 17:45 as well as at 1:37
I've heard it described as "heavy, but in a different way"
One thing I love about the approach of this and a lot of their other clean sung songs, is that her volume dynamic makes her voice phase into and above the sound of the music. It's like her breathiness is driven by the guitar more than her own vocal push at times.
This dude’s dumbfounded was at the beauty of this song is exactly how I first felt too. Love it dude. I’m no singer (just a dumb drummer) but really enjoyed this, great video brother
Thanks bro!
every time i hear or see this video, i think of my grandma. I tear up every time. I miss her.
The chorus is so huge. I love it
Edit: Remember when everyone thought Holy Roller was the greatest thing ever (and it was really, really good). Now they release this and everyone is freaking out again, rightfully so. I have a feeling they’re gonna keep amazing us and I can’t wait for that new album whenever it comes.
Watching you experience every tonal inflection and emotional transition both vocally and musically is a pure joy. I too close my eyes and often find myself using my hands to “paint” the music I’m experiencing - giving it shapes with my fingers. And this song, in particular, stole my breath and had me weeping… and weeping… thank you so much for this amazing reaction.
I've been blasting this song often since it came out. That chorus is HUGE. Great video as always.
Literally every new band in my playlist in the last 6 months has come from your channel. Love the channel bruddah!
Bro!! With all my respect. You can't stop the song at the gates of that great chorus. It's no natural.
4am in Australia and I saw the premier notification. Might aswell stay up xD
What an emotional rollercoaster this song is.
I’m sure you’ll listen to this again and watch the video. It’s worth watching.
I am also a huge fan of the "wash of sound." Which is also why I am a huge Devin Townsend fan like you too! It gets me every time.
Instantly subscribing to this.
This is the first time I've ever watched one of these vocal coach reactions where everything he's explaining has made perfect sense to me
Great to hear, welcome aboard!
That subtle guitar solo... so impeccable
I have never heard this song before this reaction... and it happens to me too. I had to stop, and then listen to the song by it self like 10 times. Then i came back here... this song is a masterpiece!
Such a beautiful song, thanks for watching!
The amount of satisfaction I get seeing you react the exact same way I do to this song... is immeasurable. It’s truly soul music & causes an emotional reaction whether you want it or not. 🖤
I have such a hard time watching this video. Such a beautiful song, incredible video. But man is it a kick in the heart nuts at the same time
duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude! that simple tip for developing vocal fold closure control (whisper to full note) is so cool! thank you!
also, this song gives me chills every, EVERY time I listen to it. absolute masterpiece.
Two of my favorite vocalists in one video!
I love that my man's is just jammin' with his eyes closed while everyone watchin' is just bawlin' their eyes out.
Worth waiting for your reaction for this long! 🙂
I love this song so much 😍
I’m in tears a minute in and this guy start starts singing row row row your boat
This song is a vessel that allows me to feel a cosmic pain that we all share but hold deep within. The cry that comes from so deep that its intangible and unexplainable but... more pure then any moment I can experience.
So glad you give Spiritbox the time they so much deserve. They are so damn amazing and Courtney is a goddess. Thanks Mark for another great video.
This song is stunning.
That moment when you close your eyes and open them and Mark is making the exact same faces as you...
I love this channel.
I love Mark.
I love mental tricks you play on yourself that get results. The liquid pouring analogy for example. I always found those more useful than just saying 'oh do this with your vocal folds'.
Man, this song is so heartwrenching.
His reaction at the end is my reaction Absolutely Every Time. Spot on, man. Too f'in good.
God the ending still chokes me up
best song ive heard in 2020
I was in an amateur hardcore/metal band for a few years about 8 years ago, I've never really enjoyed people and their advice/tips on how to control my vocals. That being said, tonight I was watching a few reaction videos to this song specifically, im happy I stumbled here because I appreciate everything you say and the way you describe it. Hell, you're about to get me back into vocals again haha. Honestly though, cheers from a new sub
This video is too damn good. Sends the message pretty clear.
This is the heaviest song my heart has ever felt. If you've ever watched one of your loved ones fade away due to dementia or alzheimer's, this is a wonderful tribute to them. #Spiritbox
Yeah, this song hits hard every time I listen to it!
Gotta start including the songs that play during the logo segment in the description.
First time watching your videos and your analysis is very insightful 🤌
Thanks, William, I hope you stick around!
I just wanna thank the people in the comments for sharing there stories, I know its not easy to talk about loved ones that have passed. Just gotta take one day at a time and live it to the fullest, because we are only given one life. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever and courtney is a goddess. 🙏
Quite often I watch these videos and go, "Hey I have that same t-shirt from Target too!" Oh and I love the analysis. That too!
Hey man, thank you for your reaction. Enjoyed the analysis and the technical vocal tips. Subbed.
Awesome, thank you!
Just started watching your vids and I have to say I love them my man, love your explanations and how you feel the song
Thanks dude!
these incredible instrumentals ....i have to hear this stripped too... courtney is amazing and the collaboration between them makes this mouth watering and such beautiful amazing stuff. xo
So, I first heard of this band on Octane on Sirius XM with their song Secret Garden. When I hear a person or band that just hits everything, the instruments, vocals, lyrics....I just have to check them out. I stumbled across this song and instantly started bawling. Her voice is so hauntingly beautiful in it and the music is just so amazing. My mom had dementia, so it hits a little too close to home.
God dammit it finally got me. Seen this vid a bunch and it finally gets me during a damn reaction version of the video.
It'll get you in the end!
Really thankful I found this band their debut album comes out next year and they are just absolutely phenomenal musicians Courtney's voice sends shivers down my spine
perfect choice for vid, good analysis as always
Thanks dude!
Just because you appreciate spiritbox, you got a like and a follow from me. ❤️
Thanks Jack!
Wow. Really good content.
Glad you liked it
“Start with whispering” and my mind immediately goes to “hey lil mama lemme whisper in ya ear” kill me please 😂
Tell you sumthing that you might like to hear..............
Was waiting for this video to come out the second I saw the spirit box video.
Spiritbox is one of a kind! Love Them
Loved this. Her voice is angelic
Your reaction video has been best of the couple I've watched. Also Mark. I will pass along your compliments to Courtney and Michael. I 5hink it would mean a lot coming from you. Ooh, I'd love to see you guys get together for an interview or maybe doing a vocal track together. I don't think I have that power but it would be pretty kick ass!
We would absolutely LOVE to have Courtney on the channel in some capacity. If she's interested and willing to drop us an email on kardavox1010@gmail.com - we'd love to sort something out!
this song is so good but it touches my soul in a way so I walk around all emotional at work xD
Love this song…the amount of elegance mixed with sadness and Heavyness of the song is just OO7
Anyone else seen this music video ten times already but just want to see someone else cry?
You sing "row your boat" and it sounds good lol I may hit you up for tips/lessons in the near future. Hate my voice, learned with terrible technique - but I love singing. Awesome videos.
You should really take a look at either Numenorean or Deafheaven, amazing work from both!
And MØL
@@DiscoStu12081983 Just more blackgaze in general 😂
@@Planthoarderr Yeah man, would definitely be a great change up!!
Unreqvited (yes that’s spelled right) and White Ward are great as well.
@@tevildo9383 love how White Ward adds some saxophone to their work, really spices it up
Thanks for the upload, another good video as always!
Beautiful song
I'm with this guy. The best.
Fuckin' love you bro. Fuckin' love this band.
This song just makes you feel a certain way, it breaks me every time.
