I quote Scott Hryciuk from a comment in the song's video here in RUclips: “Constance is my mom. Today - December 4th is her birthday - she is 88. She is the nurse in the photo. She is in a long term care home and I have not seen her since early March of this year due to COVID-19. Unfortunately the press release is incorrect. Courtney’s grandmother died in 2020 and she wrote the beautiful lyrics to honor her grandmother. Dylan’s grandmother is still living and has been suffering from dementia for several years. Dylan created the video imagery to honor his grandmother and her struggles at this time in her life. Mom goes by Connie to those that know her. Today her proper name of Constance is more meaningful. Dylan from Versa Films is my son. I am thankful to Courtney and Spiritbox for having the courage to tackle a subject like this. Courtney: I am sorry for the loss of your grandmother. I am touched by the comments from everyone that has been through this. As the son, I know how it affects me - everyday seeing your mother not remember you. Counting the times she remembers your name. As parents we don't always see or realize the impact these circumstance and this disease has on the grandchildren. Dylan, Courtney and all the comments show that the pain runs deep within the families. For me it is tough to watch this video. It is harder to live with or to have lived with this in real life. Words cannot begin to describe. Thank you to everyone for their comments as hard as they were to publicly display. It's amazing Dylan. It's amazing Courtney. It's amazing Spiritbox. Constance is proud. I am proud”. This song is pure gold.
That was exactly what I thought the song was about. I watched my grandmother become increasingly detached from reality, to the point that she couldn't recognize her own children or where she was. The shot where the face in the photograph became blurred really got to me.
I administer medications to the dementia and psychotic elderly here in Aus for 6 years now and it can be a really fun wing/ward but sometimes its so horrific for family witnessing the mental and behaviour decline of their loved ones. It must be horrible on so many levels and I can't count the amount of times I've seen people leave rooms crying. You never know how much mental/emotional strength anyone actually has until you witness something like progressed dementia of a loved ones.
I'm going through this with my grandmother right now and it's been pretty bad for about a year now. Thanks due to some relatives she's in a memory assistance facility literally 1 block away from my home, but we still can't spend time with her due to this lockdown. I can talk to her over the phone, but I think that confuses her even more since she can't see who she's talking to, and she'll often forget who I am mid conversation. It's one of the saddest, most infuriating things I've experienced in my life. I feel incapable of being able to do anything about it, and it's all compounded when people tell you that you're some sort of monster for not wanting your 92 year old grandmother to die while locked up away from family. Sorry to rant / share too much
@@jeffjensen8 @Jeff Jensen I know how you feel. The worse it gets, the harder it is to be around them and pretend it's ok. I remember a few *almost* conversations where just a bit through it, I, my uncles, or even my mother had become her late husband in her mind... Or insisting that she needed to be somewhere for very important reasons that she was never able to finish describing. The end, before I finally accepted that she was gone, was the worst. I'm still ashamed to say that she would probably have been better leaving us sooner.
@@zerozeeros That's great! It does hit everyone differently for sure. This one hit me on a personal level. I usually don't just cry at a song, but the content of the song and the video reminded me too much of my grandmother. 12 years of watching her slowly forget our family sucks ass, and this song helped me just grieve.
If you want to know why she sounds as emotionally soft and vulnerable as she does, watch the video and follow the story, then notice that she's been crying through it. It's personal to her and also to the video's director.
There are 100s of reactions out there that do that, but this is a vocal analysis by someone who understands how she does what she does. Not trying to stir a pot here just putting my 2 cents. He mentioned in the video it was hard for him to concentrate on the vocals. I imagine after a few watches it'll click for him, but I also can imagine he is trying to concentrate and give his input on her vocals primarily. Imagine you are a chef and you specialized in herbs. He's here to tell you about that rosemary sprig in your amazing steak dinner and why it's so necessary. He knows that steak is juicy and tender, but his life is that rosemary sprig. Courtney's grandmother passed away this year after a long battle with dementia. This song is about her. It moves me to tears every time because I feel like I can hear the grief in her voice.
Every friggin time... freaking tears. My God this hits so hard. I just visited my Mom's dementia facility to drop off her Christmas present today. These feels are like a mountain.
Man this song is so good, she sings it so well, that instrument breakdown nearing the end is just so heavy (also with emotions). Found this online: The authorship of “Constance” is mainly attributed to Spiritbox frontwoman Courtney LaPlante. She wrote it during 2020’s coronavirus pandemic. And due to the resultant lockdowns, she was unable to be with her grandmother during her passing, in addition to not being able to attend her funeral. So that’s whom the song itself actually serves as a tribute to. Meanwhile the titular “Constance” is actually a reference to Constance Hryciuk, the grandmother of Dylan Hryciuk, the director of the track’s music video. She also passed away in 2020, to dementia.. And basically, Spiritbox used the occasion of the release of this song to honor both of these artists’ grandmothers. Which makes it even more beautiful for me as I've lost my grandmother to alzheimer's.
Dylan's father commented on the original video that his mother is still alive and the video was actually released on her 88th birthday. She has, however, been battling dementia for many years.
Not sure if anyone else has shared this with you yet but here's an excerpt from an interview with Courtney about the song: "Due to border shut downs, I was not able to say goodbye to my grandmother Phyllis, to whom the song is in tribute, or attend her funeral. I always promised her that I would sing at her memorial service, because she always requested a 'pretty song with none of that scary screaming.' I too close my eyes and often find myself using my hands to “paint” the music I’m experiencing - giving it shapes with my fingers. And this song, in particular, stole my breath and had me weeping… and weeping… thank you so much for this amazing reaction.
I think something that is missing from a lot of these analyses/reactions (there’s a lot to unpack in this song so I’m not attacking anyone) is the breakdown. How it trends off from these cords that align with much of the rest of the song into these very diminished and demonic sounding cords that deviate from the norm. Two of my grandparents have died from dementia and the breakdown captures that gradual descent into a loss of self and normality perfectly. I’m not sure if this was intentionally done or if the band created this breakdown based on how they felt, but I hope they know how much I appreciate this song and especially the emotional that went into that breakdown. It’s more than “brutal” sounding. It captures the very pathology of this disease. My heart goes out to everyone impacted by this terrible disease. I’m working towards studying it in the lab some day. I hope you all are staying safe.
One thing I love about the approach of this and a lot of their other clean sung songs, is that her volume dynamic makes her voice phase into and above the sound of the music. It's like her breathiness is driven by the guitar more than her own vocal push at times.
duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude! that simple tip for developing vocal fold closure control (whisper to full note) is so cool! thank you! also, this song gives me chills every, EVERY time I listen to it. absolute masterpiece.

@@sodgape It was though. She wrote the lyrics for her grandmother and even sung the song without any screaming sections because she didn't like when she did that.
This song is a vessel that allows me to feel a cosmic pain that we all share but hold deep within. The cry that comes from so deep that its intangible and unexplainable but... more pure then any moment I can experience.
I love mental tricks you play on yourself that get results. The liquid pouring analogy for example. I always found those more useful than just saying 'oh do this with your vocal folds'.
I have never heard this song before this reaction... and it happens to me too. I had to stop, and then listen to the song by it self like 10 times. Then i came back here... this song is a masterpiece!
This dude’s dumbfounded was at the beauty of this song is exactly how I first felt too. Love it dude. I’m no singer (just a dumb drummer) but really enjoyed this, great video brother
So, I first heard of this band on Octane on Sirius XM with their song Secret Garden. When I hear a person or band that just hits everything, the instruments, vocals, lyrics....I just have to check them out. I stumbled across this song and instantly started bawling. Her voice is so hauntingly beautiful in it and the music is just so amazing. My mom had dementia, so it hits a little too close to home.
I was in an amateur hardcore/metal band for a few years about 8 years ago, I've never really enjoyed people and their advice/tips on how to control my vocals. That being said, tonight I was watching a few reaction videos to this song specifically, im happy I stumbled here because I appreciate everything you say and the way you describe it. Hell, you're about to get me back into vocals again haha. Honestly though, cheers from a new sub
Really thankful I found this band their debut album comes out next year and they are just absolutely phenomenal musicians Courtney's voice sends shivers down my spine
I just wanna thank the people in the comments for sharing there stories, I know its not easy to talk about loved ones that have passed. Just gotta take one day at a time and live it to the fullest, because we are only given one life. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever and courtney is a goddess. 🙏
these incredible instrumentals ....i have to hear this stripped too... courtney is amazing and the collaboration between them makes this mouth watering and such beautiful amazing stuff. xo
This is the heaviest song my heart has ever felt. If you've ever watched one of your loved ones fade away due to dementia or alzheimer's, this is a wonderful tribute to them. #Spiritbox
This in my opinion, is true genuine music. Stuff that comes from the heart. Any song that has genuine meaning always resonates with me no matter what genre. Its terrible under the circumstances this song was written, but god damn did something so beautiful get born from something so horrendous. I've never heard of spiritbox before and I heard this song on a spotify recommendation. and Im glad I listened to it, it truly puts it into perspective to effects of dementia from the sufferers point of view. This song will always be in my playlist. Good damn job.
I don't know if you or anyone else mentioned this but SPACE is one of the greatest techniques she used in this song. Lots of room for the listener to think and the emotions to really hit. The music and chords really complimented the vocals as well.
Love Spiritbox as a metal musician. They're one of my favorite, like Loathe and others. I lost my grandpa this year while taking care of him for the past 2 years but, he also got me into music being in T-Bone Walker's band. Feels are reals. 🤘🏾

@@iladiesnutzoyochin The lyrics are dog shit but the song itself is great 👍
@@sodgape that's irrelevant to you saying the song wasn't for her grandmother lol
@@iladiesnutzoyochin you're irrelevant
Bro!! With all my respect. You can't stop the song at the gates of that great chorus. It's no natural.
This song is a vessel that allows me to feel a cosmic pain that we all share but hold deep within. The cry that comes from so deep that its intangible and unexplainable but... more pure then any moment I can experience.
This song is stunning.
I love mental tricks you play on yourself that get results. The liquid pouring analogy for example. I always found those more useful than just saying 'oh do this with your vocal folds'.
4am in Australia and I saw the premier notification. Might aswell stay up xD
This video is too damn good. Sends the message pretty clear.
I have never heard this song before this reaction... and it happens to me too. I had to stop, and then listen to the song by it self like 10 times. Then i came back here... this song is a masterpiece!
Such a beautiful song, thanks for watching!
Two of my favorite vocalists in one video!
Man, this song is so heartwrenching.
This dude’s dumbfounded was at the beauty of this song is exactly how I first felt too. Love it dude. I’m no singer (just a dumb drummer) but really enjoyed this, great video brother
Thanks bro!
Spiritbox is one of a kind! Love Them
God the ending still chokes me up
Hey man, thank you for your reaction. Enjoyed the analysis and the technical vocal tips. Subbed.
Awesome, thank you!
these incredible instrumentals ....i have to hear this stripped too... courtney is amazing and the collaboration between them makes this mouth watering and such beautiful amazing stuff. xo
Um, demon king by brand of sacrifice?
Many want to see it
Yeah but let's enjoy this video instead of passive aggressively complaining that he didn't do the thing you wanted
@@hailhummus are you new to reaction videos
@@hailhummus I wasnt really thinking when I typed it, it did come out a lot more rude then I meant it to and that's on me
I have such a hard time watching this video. Such a beautiful song, incredible video. But man is it a kick in the heart nuts at the same time
That moment when you close your eyes and open them and Mark is making the exact same faces as you...
I love this channel.
I love Mark.
Love this song…the amount of elegance mixed with sadness and Heavyness of the song is just OO7
Just started watching your vids and I have to say I love them my man, love your explanations and how you feel the song
Thanks dude!
best song ive heard in 2020
Fuckin' love you bro. Fuckin' love this band.
Loved this. Her voice is angelic
Quite often I watch these videos and go, "Hey I have that same t-shirt from Target too!" Oh and I love the analysis. That too!
This is the heaviest song my heart has ever felt. If you've ever watched one of your loved ones fade away due to dementia or alzheimer's, this is a wonderful tribute to them. #Spiritbox
Yeah, this song hits hard every time I listen to it!
I love that my man's is just jammin' with his eyes closed while everyone watchin' is just bawlin' their eyes out.
Thanks for the upload, another good video as always!
Was waiting for this video to come out the second I saw the spirit box video.
God dammit it finally got me. Seen this vid a bunch and it finally gets me during a damn reaction version of the video.
It'll get you in the end!
I’m in tears a minute in and this guy start starts singing row row row your boat
I have no idea why but the ending of the song, going super heavy into that calm tranquility made me cry like a baby. I have zero idea why . Fuck dude
perfect choice for vid, good analysis as always
Thanks dude!
First time watching your videos and your analysis is very insightful 🤌
Thanks, William, I hope you stick around!
Gotta start including the songs that play during the logo segment in the description.
I'm with this guy. The best.
This song just makes you feel a certain way, it breaks me every time.
Just because you appreciate spiritbox, you got a like and a follow from me. ❤️
Thanks Jack!
Darko US just released a song called "Donna" that is flowy and ambient like this...your reaction would be amazing
I don't know if you or anyone else mentioned this but SPACE is one of the greatest techniques she used in this song. Lots of room for the listener to think and the emotions to really hit. The music and chords really complimented the vocals as well.
YOU LITERALLY MUST REACT TO DEMON KING BY BRAND OF SACRIFICE. Make our Christmas dreams come true!!
Love Spiritbox as a metal musician. They're one of my favorite, like Loathe and others. I lost my grandpa this year while taking care of him for the past 2 years but, he also got me into music being in T-Bone Walker's band. Feels are reals. 🤘🏾
ya this song's fuckin devastating and I love it
