  • Calcium Reactor Maintenance is something you don't have to do every day and that's a good thing!!! Today I'll show you what it takes to maintain a calcium reactor and explain to you how they work and help you figure out if you need one or not. Even if you don't have a calcium reactor this video is still worth a watch! Your reef tank will thank you. I use Reborn calcium reactor media and ReMag by Two Little Fishies because it is the most natural media readily available. I use a Korallin c3002 reactor with an Eheim pump, a Carbondoser.com regulator and a Masterflex economy drive peristaltic pump to consistently deliver water through the reactor.
    My reactor set up:

    Regulator: amzn.to/2VR1QW1
    Media: www.marinedepot.com/search?Qu...
Peristaltic pump (not mine but will work): www.marinedepot.com/Kamoer_FX...

You mentioned initial cost but did not comment on ongoing costs which, over time, surely can impact the long term viability of any decision.

Cost me $50 for a 20# tank refil which will last at least a year. And the media needs to be filled about twice a year so that's about $70 per year. I think the real saver is the time and most importantly the consistency the reactor gives. Hope this helps

NEVER MIND, I see thats your water in to the CR. I have 1502 model that I used for 10 years until I drop[ed it and broke all the fittings . Sad that they are not standard sch 80 fittings. will cost over a hundred bucks to replace them :(

Thanks for the vid! I just picked up a Korallin reactor like yours, and I have a question for you: How did you adapt the tubing/fittings to the RO tubing and John Guest fittings? Also, I see your peristaltic pump is pulling from the top. What are you doing with the other outlet, the red tube in your case? Thanks again for the content!!

i used some barb to JG fittings i bought from US plastic online. on top of the reactor the line that comes out has a barb fitting ball valve and i just shoved the RO tubing on that and ran it to the JG end of the adapter mentioned before. that then runs to the rubber dosing tube on the peristaltic pump.

Wondering why you are using a needle valve on the effluent out when your using the Kamora to feed the CR. (Unless it's opened up all the way?

It's opened up all the way.. I attempted many times to tune the reactor with the needle valve until I gave up and bought the peristaltic pump. I was lazy and didn't take the needle valve off lol

Is it really worth saving that little bit of media left in there? That stuff's been sitting in there with the "chocolate milk" for a year. Isn't it better to just start fresh with all new stuff? Also, I see at least three dosing containers behind you. What else are you dosing?

I think it's worth saving. That's probably $10 worth of media... The Remag is more expensive and I didn't have any on hand. Plus I got it cleaned out pretty good. Its set up to dose acropower, iodine, iron and potassium.

Didn't mean the Kamora, meant the dosing pump your using.

      No I don't have a kamora, it's a masterflex peristaltic pump

Looks like a bit of a mare doing maintenance on that in your current setup with the tight space. Reefer problems :) Bet you’re glad you only need to replenish once a year!
