- Today I'll be opening up my Lenovo Legion 5 and upgrading the RAM from 16 to 32 GBs and installing a second SSD.
---------------------------
Parts Used:
SSD - ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB
RAM - Crucial RAM 32GB Kit (2x16GB) CT2K16G4SFRA32A
Legion 5 15 with RTX 2060 and Ryzen 7
Legion 5 15 with GTX 1660Ti and Ryzen 7
Before upgrading the laptop you should disconnect the battery cord. Otherwise you can damage the whole laptop. Guys please do this first before touching the insides with a screwdriver
Thank you for the video! Was very helpful with step by step, easy to follow instructions that includes the minor details that others may overlook (especially setting up the new ssd in the end). Followed it and successfully installed a new ssd in my Legion.
ADATA ssd now installed on my Legion 5 17". Very easy except for removing the case, as the side areas you mentioned were having none of this nonsense. Thanks for the quick and easy to follow instructions!
useful reference for the future. I just got my legion 5. Thanks!
How do u like it
@@Angry-Lynx its heavy but its been great so far! The trackpad has some quirks, but im on a mouse most of the time. The CPU and GPU fly - chews through video encoding and games like dota are smooth as butter. Saved myself a bunch of money over the current gen models and im pleased i went with last gen. Even if i upgraded the RAM and added a SSD im still under the current gen prices.
Thanks for mentioning the 16gb RAM false limitation thing, I had my doubts cleared.
It's not that you can't, it's just that there's no real performance upgrade, let's you upgrade to 64gb but limits performance to 16gb
Very clear explanation! Im picking up some parts during the black friday sales and will be making these upgrades! Thank you!
Always disconnect the battery when removing/adding parts. There's also a option to disable the battery in the bios.
Bro help, If i disable battery in bios, then I dont need to remove the battery? ?
@@Shivam-vr6eh yes, look it up on how to do it. There's an option in the bios to do it and there are instructions on how to re enable it all without taking the battery out. I can't remember exactly what you have to do, but there is an option to do so
@@Riley1524 Have u tried that bios option urself? coz I heard sometimes laptop just doesnt start after disabling battery thru bios........Can I simply remove battery cable,is that safe?
@@Shivam-vr6eh I have when I installed more memory...There's a sequence that you have to do before you can start the laptop up, but I forget how to do it. Just search and it should be easy to find
Very true. While I didn't do it in the video it is always best practice to disconnect the battery and to use a anti-static wrist strap.
This video was very helpful the most helpful video I found actually first gaming laptop and first time installing ssd and ram and I was able to do with without any hiccups while following this video thank you!
Thank you for the nice comment. I'm glad you found it helpful.
Great review! Keep it up!
YOU'RE A GENIUUUUSS!!!
Thanks this video deserves more views
Just added a m.2 to my new legion 5 using this tutorial! Thanks!
I have a Legion Y530 and my father buy this legion 5, and both are amazing. I buy the y530 first and I upgrade the ram and the hdd to ssd and is simply a very nice laptop family.
Thank you so much for the clear information!
Thank you! Greetings from Poland.
thx man,, u deserve more subs and views. ,
Great review. Love from India.
Brilliant video, perfect pace and clear. Sorry if a silly question, I am new to upgrading computers. The new M2 drive slot, does it support PCIE M2 drive?
Depends on your laptops model, some of those Lenovos coming with 2x m.2 slot and some with m2 and ssd. So which do you have
@@ariavision i have legion 5 2021 > does this laptop support 2TB m.2 ? i have two m.2 slot without ssd
@@acealfaify7104 yes it does
The first slot supports 1TB
The second slot max 2TB
@@ariavision thank you so much for answering my question 3>
@Sean before you upgrade make sure that you update the bios as that is the trick… but to be honest not sure, heard that Lenovo is working on new Bios update which supports 4 TB
Thank you for your video it was very helpful. Thanks a lot
I hope you can show also how you flashed legion 5i with rtx 2060 to 100watts or 115 watts
Instructions are on discord server he linked
Thanks!! My Legion 5 is supposed to be here tomorrow; I already ordered a 32gb upgrade and will probably pop in a 2tb M.2 drive in the second slot very soon.
If I want to store games do I use the ssd?
@@KM-lc6hj yes. Ssd can load things faster then hdd
@@bananafone1414 ok thank you
No need to flex fancy boy 😂
Did the 2tb NVMe drive work? I've read on the Lenovo forums that only 1tb drives are officially supported
Thanks a lot for this detailed video, I have to like it.
May I ask what would happen if you installed a 4TB SSD, would it still work?
I'm really happy to see this video. I'm planning on buying a Legion 5 Pro, and I'd like to upgrade it to 64 GB of RAM, but wasn't sure if there was some limitation to doing so.
For the second SSD, is there any limitation on the amount of storage? Somebody said that, based upon the number of pins in the harness, you'd only be able to get a 512 GB SSD in the auxiliary slot, but I have my doubts. Ideally, I'd like a 2 TB main drive and a 2TB auxiliary drive. Any thoughts on this? How big was the second SSD you installed? Thanks for the help.
Also, I like your Fender Jazz bass.
Thank you. The ssd I put in is a 1tb. Seems to be working well.
Thanks. It's a Carvin.
@@lieflikes Oh wow! My brother has a Carvin DC400 from the early 90's that he bought new. I'm a drummer, which is why I didn't realize it wasn't a Jazz bass. :-)
@@christopherg9806 It is an SB4000. They don't make them anymore but it's definitely one of the nicest bases I've ever played and I've owned a lot of bases.
Hi, that is a cool video. I just have a question. Does the first slot use the same M2 size than the second one? Thank you.
How have these upgrades been holding up after a year?
thanks a lot
Can you recommend a few ssd for this laptop? Cause you I can’t find the one used in the video in my country. Thanks!
Why does my laptop blue screen when i put a new ssd in ?
Just got this laptop and asking if there are more than 1 slots for hard drive
What's the maximum in Terabytes i can upgrade the storage to?
wondering if I can put 2TB of NVME in both slots?
No on first slot only 1TB and on 2nd 2TB
thanks was just wondering if seagate barracuda would fit in this laptop since there's complaints about it needing some hdd to be max 7mm thick
M.2 or 2.5 SSD?? they seem to be about the same price..
hello the model is Legion 5 15ACH6 82JW003JAR?
is it possible to attach a XPG SX8200 Pro 2TB 3D NAND NVMe Gen3x4 PCIe M.2 2280 Solid State Drive R/W 3500/3000MB/s SSD instead of the original ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB you attached?
and are all M.2 the same size to fit in this laptop or there's a specific size?
you're not upgrading the battery?
do you need to wear a antistatic braclet when doing this if youre on carpet?
How much RAM and SSD can I install?
Why u have not unplugged the battery? It can damage components if battery is plugged during ssd upgrade
Is it necessary to disable the battery in the BIOS and physically unplug the battery?
Hey I know this video is old, but I’m thinking of doing this and a lot of other videos have said to disconnect the battery but it looks quite tricky, I see you didn’t on this video, would you say this is an important step ?
Thank you
There is some risk if you don't disconnect the battery which I didn't do in this video. Best practice is to always disconnect the battery and using anti-static wrist strap.
May I use the drive as an external hard drive like with a wire, or must it be installed to use?
What was the screw driver used
I basically did everything the same but it didn’t show up or to allocate it
Can I upgrade ssd 256gb to 512gb in Lenovo legion 5
Sure you can do, the first slot is up to 1TB and second slot up to 2TB
Do you need to remove battery before any upgrades ?
Does this laptop support SSD 2280 NVM PCIE4.0x4(gen4) so I can get a Gen 4 SSD?
No
Will the legion 5 2060 model have a different process or ability to upgrade?
the only difference is the video card GPU.. nothing else is different
@@B.D.TRX4 lenovo legion 5i i7 10750h has 2933 mhz ram frequency and rtx 2060 100w.lenovo legion 5 ryzen 7 4800h has has 3200 mhz ram frequency and rtx 2060 115w.
is a problem about this laptop and ram speed. So ram speed isn't just frequency but also the latency/CAS (cl 16 /cl18 etc....) and usually u can tweak ur bios to get the right ram speed you want on your pc.
But here you cannot, Lenovo didnt add this option (XMP options).
So if you buy some good ram, 3200mhz cl16 this kinda thing, it will be bottlenecked.
Original ram is 3200mhz cl22. There is a quick formula to realize what speed your ram got " (cas : frequency) x 2000 " which gets you 13.75. here the lower the better.
3200mhz with cl16 gives you 10 so its 25% faster. its HUGE. But without XMP options, the ram speed shuts down to 2666mhz cl 22 so a result of 16.5.
You buy good ram which should go 25% faster but you got 25 slower than the original ram. Unbelievable.
The problem is that absolutely nobody talks about it.
So even the graphic card and cpu can be bottlenecked by this if you don't check ram speed with cpu-z.
I don't know if Lenovo can add XMP options in their bios with an update, but that would be just decent behavior from them to try or communicate about it.
It's a gaming product. damn.
Hi, is it better to buy the ram with cl22 for this Legion 5 15ARH05H? How about cl20? is Kingston Fury IMPACT a good option?
@@JibHyourinmaru yeah I bought the Kingston FURY Impact 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz DDR4 CL20
which was the best in the market for this pc 6 months ago
my ram only shows up as 8
Mettre une plus grosse batterie sur le Lenovo legion 5 est possible
i'm fucking mad. i wanted to buy a new ssd to add to my legion 5. But i thought, i wanna take a look first before i buy a ssd,
there is one screw left for me to rtemove so i can plug in a ssd card. But it just couldn't be moved even the slightest. Now that i have tried so often to loosen it, the screw isn't usable anymore and i'm fucked :(
i have a question my legion came with 240gb ssd now if upgrade it with an 500gb ssd in the M2 slot , that is not a problem right ?
Did you do it?
Omg it would be so awesome if you changed your channel name to Big Gay Al
How could i not like your video. Youre like cross of big gay al from SP and gay character from family.guy
😂
HELP HELP HELP PLEASEEEEEEE : I have installed an SSD Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB in the second slot, but the sequential speed is half of what it is supposed to be, the speed should be 3.500 MB/s but I only reach about 1.750 MB/s. According CrystanDiskInfo the transfer mode is PCIe 3.0 x2 while it support PCIe 3.0 x4. Could it be a Samsung problem ? Or is the PC that allows only 1TB SSD ? I found this online: psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/Legion/Lenovo_Legion_5P_15ARH05H/Lenovo_Legion_5P_15ARH05H_Spec.pdf
how is your laptop now ?
i plan to buy 2tb nvme gen 4x4 .. can we install it on second slot ssd ?.
and cause my legion 5 only support gen 3 x 4 , it's no matter for me if ssd run on 3000 mb/s ..
