Definitely true on the compression and other sound tweaks.

    A few things:
    - How old is this/when did he perform it? I haven't seen him use his Taylor in a while.
    - I really hate it when he says "guitar nerd song." Based on my own experience playing this song for crowds I can see why he started calling it that, but it is still belittling of his talent and songwriting ability, as well as those of us who cover it.
    - The bass he gets from his sound is almost 100% the wood choice in his 714-CE. I can't get the same tone in my 314 with EQ, it's all woods.

@fezzard Yeah I think so too. But whenever I've played a 714ce I had it plugged in, where I could EQ some of the presence out of the high end. I think it's still a great all-around guitar but it's definitely not the best "campfire strumming" guitar.

Wow, so much better than the version that used to get the rounds way back in the day.

@fezzard For pop you probably want a brighter sound. The 314-ce is what Dave Matthews uses, and the Taylor that I have. If you get a Taylor make sure to get a newer one with the 9V expression system. I would say the only guitars in the 14-ce line that are worth the money are the 314-ce, 514-ce and 714-ce. The 514 is probably the best of all three, but it's subjective. I love my 314 but I feel like the natural bass response is lacking, due to the brighter tone woods. (continue on next post)

@Vaughanabe13 i agree with you man, its an awesome guitar with great wood combinations.... the only thing that sucks for this guitar is its only good for fingerpicking or plucking with the fingers with a pick the strings tend to get too bright, atleast for me i dont like that, other than that this is a great guitar....

    A few other things:
    - The embellishments he plays in this version are almost 100% the same as he has always played. His songs typically have a "studio version" and a "live" version and even though the live version is different, it never changes over time. This version of Phunk is the exact same one I heard 3 years ago live, and it's the same one in the majority of his youtube videos.
    - The mix needs a combination of reverb, compression, and analog delay. His tone is good, but the signal is dry.

@Vaughanabe13 hey dude, you seem like a guy that really knows guitar, specially taylors.... ive only tried the taylor 714 ce ive been playing martins all my life... and I play fingerstyle stuff mostly in the style of tuck andress and also play blues like clapton and pop stuff like john mayer or dave matthews... if youve heard of those guys then you might have an idea what sound i like, so do you have any taylor model reccomendations that will fit my style that is better than the 714 ce?

@fezzard A 714 will NOT sound as bassy as it does in this video, he applied heavy EQ here. But it will have a very nice, smooth low end, and it's a very good all-around guitar. Nathan Montgomery plays a 514-ce so check out his videos for that sound. You might also consider Larrivee, they have some good high-end models. But if you can afford it, the best for my money is a large-body McPherson - those things just absolutely ROCK. I'm biased though, I prefer the Taylor sound over Martin any day.

Man, your poor friggin hands. Most guitarists get callouses, but not on their entire strumming hands.
