Just some overall observations overall that I’ve noticed with all the new or expanded SOF communities. And I’ll preface this by saying that I’m not opposed to these expansions, quite the opposite. But here goes. First and foremost it seems that especially during the GWOT everyone was trying to get that SOF money, gear, training, mission, etc. Even AF SF got into it with the DAGRE teams, not fully in but feet wet we’ll say. Navy SR teams, Navy SARC’s doing the full team mission like the PJ’s, etc.. What’s next? A detachment of my beloved MP Corps attached directly to JSOC? Pipelines IMO are too long. Two years minimum before your operational? A huge chunk of your enlistment is spent. Not everyone in each career field needs to be dive qualed, that alone is a massive hit to the attrition rate. I get that because of the various insertion techniques and that they deploy in teams by themselves instead of with other SOF elements, that having everyone be qualified is a huge benefit given how small it is. The overall expansion of SOF seems like a money grab. It’s a way to ensure guys aren’t cut given the next BRAC because “if you cut X unit then you’re gonna lose Y capabilities.” It’s definitely great jobs and great warfighter capabilities, but it’s protection of a fiefdom in an era where we’re broke & going further in debt every day.
