- Balhaut was the center of chaos operations in the sabbat worlds and the beating heart of the Archons empire! But more so then that it was a key step on the saints path to conquer these planets in the Emperors name millennia ago! And Warmaster Slaydo intended to follow in those footsteps! But can he manage it? The Imperial Navy would need to execute a complex strategy and the Imperial Guard would then have to drop into the teeth of massive Chaos forces. Casualties would be devastating. But the rewards might be greater still.

How so?
Given that he killed the archon, I wouldn't exactly call it incompetence. Just, perhaps not the best trade.
He was old but not without a spine.
I like how this battle plays out. The limited yet successful deployments of the Astartes makes them feel special and gives them a kinda secret weapon status in wars like this.
It also seems far more plausible than the stories where they get 10,000:1 kill ratios and conquer entire planets by themselves.
One of the things i really like about this Crusade and lore is that the regular Imperial Citizens mostly stay loyal and the majority of the fighting is done by established Chaos units. On Balhaut we know that at least some civilians fought with bolt action rifles against Chaos.
No spoilers but Gaunt actually visits his own memorial chapel and geta corrected by the tour guide that actually he is dead.

Yeah probably helps that many chaos controlled worlds didn't outright ban the worship of the emperor like most chaos forces would.

@@TactWendigoInterestingly I've only listened to one GG audiobook, I had the omnibuses and novels (several hardback versions yeee) for the longest time that Salvation's Reach was the first and only one I've listened too. For me GG stops there, I haven't honestly cared to read the novels after that one as well. I think Abnett's declining health, (very) sadly, has affected his work over the last decade or so.
@@schaddenkorp6977 all the books are really good that I've read/listened to in the series it's just that at a certain point in the audio series they change to a horrible narrator. Larkin goes from being narrated like he's quietly going mad to comicly joker level crazy. It really sucks.

Love Slaydo, he was a great character and for me made me think many Warmasters were like him because the Ghosts novels were the 2nd 40k thing i ever read.
Cant wait to continue into worlds like Fortis Binary, Aexe Cardinal, Gerron, Salvations reach, Heritor Ashpodels return on Verghast and most importantly Urdesh
Verghast, Gerron, Salvations Reach, and Urdesh are very important for the Crusade but, I say of them all Verghast is the most important one for the Ghosts as the true start of their legend

I almost wanted a play by play of the fight between the two. But you have one really old man versus a chaos empowered old man, so might not be all that interesting.
It would be basically range attacks as the choas slowly gets closer

What's great is that arch's storytelling sounds not like a lore video, but as a documentary.
Something that has always bothered me about 40k, but is particularly egregious with this particular entry, is the numbers. Both the time and troop sizes are one or two orders of magnitude to small. I would enjoy it more if the initial fleet engagement was closer 16 hrs.

Yeah, that was my reaction as well. Sugar is a refined product made from beets or sugar cane. It doesn't occur naturally and certainly not in space.

Sounds like it could it have been fate that the Archon and the Warmaster were destined to have that final battle here at Balhut. As if this was the chapter for them to come to a close and then the next leaders of both sides will carry on this crusade to bring it a close.

I'm missing some major details here like asphodel's minions trying to flood the olegarchy with neurotoxins and the massed concentration camps on the western plains housing the former imperial population, apart from that great stuff as always.
You constantly are rambling how Chaos is evil. However, here we have a force which is so competent as to land their landers in an ocean and to lose 42% of landing force to AA guns... Not to mention that in some places it was over 80%.
Like, even the most inept Chaos commander doesn't do mistakes like these commanders. Slaydo's only worthwhile virtue in this is having back up of an Imperium as he is completely detached, stubborn old man who just wished to die for his martyr's cause.
If Cybon and Draver would know that up until this point the Crusade was only a foreplay, they wouldn't be so eager to take Slaydo's place. What Urlock Gaur and Anakwanar Sek had to offer was much more than what these carrierists could afford to accept...
imagine how much cooler Napoleon and The duke of Wellington would be if they had actually 1V1'd like our warmaster and archon here

The death of Sladdo while killing the Archon and the appointment of this unknown. Tells me Sladdo and his appointed successor were religious zealots of the same group and Sladdo sacrificed for sainthood and put another of his group in charge to finish the groups plans.with allies behind the scenes.

Seems like undeveloped story. Imperium attacked and Chaos was here to be beaten in non-descriptive confrontation which was sure epic in scale and fighting everywhere. However, non of that is for us to know. Disappointed compared to how much detail there is in Siege of Vraks.
