Hey Cody I've been watching your videos for almost a year now and I love what you do! keep it up! anyways quick question: Do you get a kick back from amazon if we buy from wranglermart? I just bought a set of chisels a week ago, if I would have known that some of the money would have gone to you I would have bought them from there.

me mo I think your missing the point, it's his piece of beautiful grained wood that he used to build something that is special to him, that will hold something of worth and value to him! I feel honoured he felt we were worthy enough to share in its creation, and that's enough for me and it should be for you too.

I've been watching Wranglerstar vids for a few years and love them.... I am kinda sick of hearing people criticize him.... Mr. Wranglerstar, my advice (unwarranted) is to completely ignore them from now on.... I think they get some sort of sick satisfaction from knowing it gets to you. Have fun and God bless!

I agree. I mean, the titles were one thing (even though they didn't bother me one bit), but now people are complaining about what type of wood he uses? Life's far too short.

They (whoever they are) say we shouldn't feed the trolls and that the best way of dealingwith them is to refuse to even acknowledge them. But I think sometimes you just have to tell them to shut up! It is certainly more satisfying. And after all, it is Wranglerstars wood, his workshop, and his channel! So I think he has every right to use whatever he wants, wherever he wants, and also has the right to tell em to get lost!

The shelf is as always made with special care. The material was chosen to set off the treasured brace and drills. You will get years and years of enjoyment from all of these. Others opinions are simply that... opinions. Don't allow the negative comments detract from the joy of creating your workshop the way that you desire. Let the chaff of negativity be drawn up and into the air filters and out of your way.
I so enjoy watching your videos and learn so much. I grew up on a farm in Indiana that has been in the family for generations. Seeing many of your older tools reminds me of the workshop on the farm and my dad and grandfather. Thank you for sharing your time and talents. God bless you and yours.

Great job Cody! I loved the fact that you made a shelf for tools that you cherish and are family heirlooms! That's why I suggested to my brother to send you some stuff like that. The work that Chad put into the lumber, combined with your work and skills made something that will be around in your family for a long time! I think that's very special. Don't let any negativity get you down. Woodworkers are very passionate about wood and sometimes let that passion get the best of them. Keep up the great work! Really enjoy your videos!

The shelf looks great and the naysayers just wish they had stuff half as nice. You just ignore them and keep doing your usual fine job. You are a blessed man, with a great wife and fine son. Cody,
First off, I love your videos. Goofy titles, funny thumbnails, 10 min of a chain saw, I love them all. Keep them coming.
Secondly, you have been mentioning mean comments alot lately. Keep in mind that people tend to write a negative review of a product or service more often than a positive one. Don't let them derail you or keep you from doing what you want. It may seem like you make a bunch of people mad with off subject video titles and what not, but the majority of us aren't swayed by it. We just don't take the time to say we weren't bothered by a videos title.
The shop looks awesome. You have definitely inspired me to overhaul my shop and improve my organization. Thank you!!

Praying you feel better soon. Praying the damage to the mail box isn't bad. Don't listen to the keyboard second guessers. I think your grandfather would be honored that you treated his tools with such respect. Does anything else matter? :) Love you guys. Thanks for sharing your lives with us.
A suggestion for the mail box rebuild? Build it so that when, not if, it gets hit again that it can swing to the side. My dad build one like that for us years ago. He had an iron pipe in the ground, and another sat down inside it and came up vertically then a 90 degree elbow and out horizontally. A flat board was bolted to the pipe on the end of that, and the mail box was attached to the board. It lasted decades, as far as I know it's still there. :)

For me and my budget i bought mostly second hand tools. some were in rough shape but it wasnt a bad thing because i learned how to repair/restore them (with the help of great youtubers such as yourself). It gave a better understanding how to use and take care of those tools. it was a good learning experiance and a big wallet saver.

I don't agree that you showed disrespect to the sender, or to the wood itself - I actually thought it was sweet and considerate that you'd use some of the finest wood you had for your finest old family heirloom tools. Like you said, it will last a lifetime - both the shelf, as the tools themselves. You should keep doing what you are doing, Cody, and don't let others tell you what to you.
Your life/work is not a popular vote thing, it's you showing us what, and how you do things - keep it that way.
God bless, and keeping you all in our prayers!

The Stanley Sweetheart planes had a real problem with quality control when they first came out, so they got a bad rep, but they have, I understand, worked out those problems. Another decent plane is the Wood-River planes sold by Woodcraft.
I'm going to argue that you don't go cheap on hand planes, if you buy a good one, it will last for several generations, and, a good plane is such a joy to use. I'm partial to the Lee Valley Veritas planes, I have several, as well as some Lie Nielsen, and some good old Stanley planes as well.
    My list of starter handtools;
    1) Low angle Block Plane
    2) 5-1/2 Jack Plane
    3) 1/4" and 1/2" chisels
    4) Panel Saw
    5) Back saw
    6) 12" combination square (get a decent one)
    7) a good tape measure
    8) Marking knife (make one)
    9) Wooden Mallet (Make one!)
    10) Drill and bits
    11) Clamps (lots of them LOL)
    12) Workbench with some kind of vice.
To me the first planes to get is a good low angle block plane, this tool is so very useful for so many things, and a decent 5-1/2 Jack plane, because it will work as a #4 smoother or for working larger boards as a jointer, in a pinch.
Hand chisels, you should have four to start, but two would do at first, a 1/4" and a 1/2", then later add a 3/8" and a 3/4".
Narex is a brand that Lee Valley sells, and I understand that they are really a great value. I have all Japanese chisels, as I'm in Japan and I'm able to find good used ones for very cheap.
You will also need some kind of system to keep these tools sharp, there are lots of methods out there, I use good quality Japanese water-stones, but that's just me.
Next up you need two decent hand saws. If you are going western saws then a Panel Saw (don't matter if is is rip or cross cut) and a decent back saw again, either rip or crosscut. I like the Japanese pull saws, again, I'm in Japan, so the Japanese saws make sense for me.
A marking knife is something you can make yourself, easy to make really.
A decent wooden mallet, again, make it yourself, same as the marking knife, make one, it is not hard.
Get yourself a nice 12" combo square, spend a bit of money to make sure it is worth using, and add a good tape measure.
After that I think that a bit and brace are nice, but most people will opt for an electric drill, get a decent one, and some decent brad point woodworking drill bits.
Now go make yourself a decent workbench, not a work table, but a bench, it should be solid and heavy, and it should have a decent vice on it. Dog holes and hold fasts can come later.
With the basic tools listed above, you can build a decent bench, like the one Cody built or something even more basic like the Roubo style of bench, this is what I have and really like.
Really this should not cost you that much money, especially if you look for sales and purchase the tools spread out over a bit of time. The worst thing you can do is to buy cheap tools, these will frustrate you and eventually you will replace the with better tools, thus making the cheap tools not really cheap.
    I hope this helps.
    Cheers!

Starter set of carpenter tools. About 1958 I inherited my Grand fathers carpenter tools that he used as a part time carpenter/handyman from about 1900 to 1955. They were in a wood toolbox like a suit case and tool caddy like your $25.00 caddy from 2 years ago. Here is a list of the major tools I remember. 2 hand saws 1 rip & 1 crosscut, 1 coping saw, 2 planes large and small, 1 brace and a hand full of bits, 1 16oz claw hammer, 1 8ox ball peen, 1 1/2" chisel,2 screw drivers,1 small Stanley hand drill,1 combination Square, 1 building square, plumb bob, 8" torpedo level, and a roofing hatchet. Thanks for your vids and good health wishes to you and yours. Don W

I think that was a very good use for the maple. Just think every time you glance at them or use them, it will make it a little more special. I admire your work Cody. I had to move several years ago and had to sell my shop, it had everything. Norm would be proud. Now I have a very small area and pretty much gave up woodworking but watching you has given me inspiration to start working again. Many thanks for another fine woodshed video. I'm enjoying learning as we go along. And many of us enjoy any little visit from Mrs W. Too bad about her mail box news.
Until my inlaws moved they were in Sandpoint, Idaho. When we drove up to visit them we noticed that everyone on the main road going in, had their Roadside mail boxes suspended from one apparatus or another. Hanging from chains. We found out later that the reason for suspended mail boxes was the snow plows. A lot of damage had been done, and this is how residents found that the damage could be minimized-- hanging, flexible recepticals.

i agree with the price compliment and forums. when i was about 12 i picked up the wood working hobby from my grandfather who is now been deceased for a little over a year. he taught me a good bit about the carpentry and furniture trade. my grandmother on my moms side had a neighbor who was a very successful furniture builder.he had once told me that" it's not the price of the tool that makes the best quality furniture." " it's the best quality in the wood worker." meaning that just because you spend 500.00 on a set of planes means that that they are any better then 200.00 set. now my grandfather had taught me that patience and perfection were the main things that made the best quality in a wood worker.

I was at a woodworkers trade show last year, and stepped into the booth of a really fine hand tools company. I wish I could remember the name, something with a V I think. Anyway, they allowed us to test most of their tools on blocks of wood they had setup in the booth. It was amazing. I gained so much respect for quality hand tools. I use a lot of the low end ones such as that older Stanley in this video, and do just fine. However, the difference with the nicer tools is truly incredible. I was in their booth probably for a couple of hours literally just shaving wood, not even making anything specific. It was pure joy to use them. They accomplished what you dream a tool would (e.g. Cuts perfectly, no chipping, skipping, fraying. Smooth). It was as if God reached down and said, "yes, this is possible." But wow, they had a price tag. Little mini spoke shaves for something like $70. Planes for $375. Maybe in my later years. I hope so!

Wranglerstar, I have been watching your videos for a while now and really enjoy them. As to the shelf for your braces and hand drills your using the curly maple shows respect for the family history of them and you should ignore what anyone else says. As you said in an earlier video about the piano makers workshop that had sculptures and fine art in it your shop should be pleasing and inspirational to you since you are going to be spending your time there. One other thing, have you considered a cyclone separator for use with your HEPA vac. One like the Dust Deputy might save you from having to replace filters in your shop vac as often.

Two things: 1. I am so impressed with how you both handle bad news and problems in your lives. This wasn't the first time and I've been meaning to make this comment for a while now. Your mailbox was destroyed and the two of you handled it with respect when many times things like that lead to relationship arguments. Cody, you conduct yourself with the utmost class and respect, and that is the measure of a real man. Jack is a lucky young man to have his parents as role models. 2. Does anyone know the audiobook that made a quick appearance in the video? Sounded interesting.

Beautiful shelf for tools that mean a lot to you. Love the maple and how the shelf turned out! I am really enjoying the approach of the tool "groups" and making different shelves specific to what you have. It is inspirational to me. Keep up the great work! Hope you and your family feel better soon!

Nice work wirh the new shelf. Personally I felt your choice of wood was rather apt and showed a genuine respect for the tools. Quality tools ensconced upon quality wood. It would be quite nice to use different woods for different shelves to feature the wood as well as the tools?

The best tool is a hand-me-down tool. I have some really crappy tools that I inherited that go back 3 generations. They were the low-end models then but have a rich history in all that they have built. So, they get restored and treated well, but used. They say a poor carpenter blames their tools. But, I've seen some of the most amazing stuff my great-grandfather built with his limited budget and the tools he could afford. Love the channel!

I can think of no better use of such a beautiful material than for it to be there for you to see every day than a noble shelf in your shop. Perhaps the naysayers do not understand how precious those tools are to you.

I didn't really look at the title that much, just started watching it. wasn't really sure what you were making but when I saw you drill those holes and cut out those notches I thought you were making a curly Maple gun rack and I was so excited. turns out it was a gun rack of sorts, it's a tool rack, guns a tool, braces a tool. it all works, looks fantastic, wish I had one.

It has always amazed me how people judge other people works or what they have when they do their best. Most of the time the people judging can't do any better themselves and don't have any better tools if any. The ones who can do better stay humble about it and maybe give them guidance.

And I think the maple wood was a good choice for the shelf. I agree that special tools deserve special treatment. It would be nice if all the shelf's could be made with hard woods, but it would be to expensive.

+Wranglerstar. It is so nice to see your wood shop taking shape and getting organized. It is looking very nice in there. I too am a rookie amateur woodworker like the subscriber you mentioned in this video. I would love to see your take on a proper set of beginners tools. The shop I am setting up is totally "unplugged". As for cost, Please make every effort to keep it as low as possible. We are a homeschooling family of six with one income, and I work as a police sergeant in a moderate size town. Money is tight. My family and I will keep you and your family in our prayers for a full and swift recovery in the coming week.
Thanks, and have a great day.

The way I look at it is it'll stand out more among the plywood shelves. Anyone in your shop will see that shelf and know how much you cherish what's on it. It's more a respect to the items and who they belonged to then to the wood itself, although you are respecting the wood since it is being placed where it can show its difference.

More then half my shop tools (Power and Hand), are restored just because I love saving old tools. A reconditioned tool (if done well) has a long life and gives me quality work in return, plus, I know HOW to keep them in good shape. That said, I do own newer tools as well, and spend good money for the best tool that I NEED, for the work I do. Buying a Cadillac where a pick up will do is just wasted money. I LOVE the drill rack, awesome! Built for a lifetime and something to pass down to your son, from you. Use the woods you want, its your project!
