    My eldest brother inherited my father's carpenter's chest and most of his hand tools. I have never been a jealous person, but I admit that I was envious of my pops gift to him. Every tool was over 50 years old. All of them old school hand tools, planes, hand saws, punches, chisels, etc. After I confessed my shameful attitude to him one day, and apologized for it, he did something incredibly generous. He waited until my next birthday and wrapped up half of the tools and gave them to me as a gift. I was truly touched by his kindness and generosity. He told me that he knew our dad would have wanted him to share with his little brother. Men don't cry often, but Both of us shed some tears that day. And some wonderful memories of our hard working, kind hearted dad.

My father and my brother are both gone, but the lessons they taught me won't be forgotten. If you have family, call them and let them know how much they mean to you. I am loving this series of videos. I grew up spending a ton of time in my dad's shop. He lived and worked on a horse farm as a kind of caretaker and it seemed like he was constantly fixing and building things. There's such a comforting, nostalgic quality to things like vices and drill presses for me now. I love the sounds of someone just working away in their shop.

      It was just kind of funny after watching tons of woodworking channels talking about building stuff with wood
      and then coming across one where the guy starts off with
      "If I'm building an AR-15, or something, and I need a little vice, ya know, to do my work".
      Yeah, totally relatable, exactly what I was needing one for, building assault rifles.
      It does make ya think about all the possibilities there are, even if it's not manufacturing assault rifles,
      I could use it for making birdhouses too. 😀

    Small suggestion, recess the back jaw of the vice into the edge of the bench you can then do away with the back packing and get an extra 1/2" of vice opening and when holding longer work the bench edge will give more stability. Consider do you want hard wood jaws? Do you want the jaws to be harder than what you put in them? or softer so your work is protected from marking. they are a sacrificial item and easily replaced.

    • @crpth1
      @crpth1 6 лет назад +1

      Nice tip about recessing the jaw. I usually make J shaped jaw covers and never screw them, so replacing them it's as easy as lift them up. After awhile they are all banged up anyway. ;-)

      Agree .... the jaw wood should always be soft so that they do not mar the material it's holding ... sometimes I'm amazed how some woodworkers do not think thru what they are doing ... sorry, I'm not trying to be too critical, it just comes with 87 years of experience in the shop ... thanks for your vids.

    Shoe Display for hand planners

  • @sawdustwoodchips
    @sawdustwoodchips 5 лет назад +9

    typically that sort of vice should also have the fixed jaw inset into the bench face the thickness of the fixed jaw plus the sacrificial jaw. Doing this will allow long boards to be clamped flush with the edge of the bench. Also, the wood used for the vice jaws is better to be a soft wood - pine for example. you want the jaws to dent not the work. alternatively, add some leather in the jaws. Anyway, my two cents - keep up the great work

  • @seanmcaleavy2369
    @seanmcaleavy2369 6 лет назад

    I have two of those Irwin vices. One at each end of my bench. On one of them, instead of putting permanent wood inserts for the jaws, I drilled two 1/2" holes that are 1/4" deep into some 1/2" stock and glued two super magnets in the holes so they sit flush with the surface. Then I glued a 3/4" strip of the 1/2" stock along the long edge, flush with the face that doesn't have the magnet holes in it. I made two of these and they are removable wooden jaw inserts that I can easily remove if I need the small 4 1/2" vice to give me an extra inch.

    You should really look at a dust collection system. Not only have they linked sawdust too bad allergies, cancer and asthma, it is so nice to have a clean shop all the time without constantly fighting dust in the air. With such a small space it wouldn't be tough to implement it and it is such a pleasure to work in a space that cleans itself.

    • @tjwatts100
      @tjwatts100 7 лет назад +3

      That is expecially true of some of the exotic hardwoods like iroko which is very bad for you in dust format, as is MDF dust. I've never bothered too much about softwood with infrequent working - but if I were doing this level of work frequently, dust reduction would be a good idea. Does america still use tanalised timber (treated with copper and arsenic)? Dust from that would be bad.

    • @wutangclams3203
      @wutangclams3203 6 лет назад +1

      Dust from yew wood is especially toxic.
      I've read that once you inhale any sawdust, it stays in the tiny air sacs of the lungs forever and mucus cannot carry it out. Over a lifetime of buildup and clogging, inflammation occurs, leading to copd and cancer, among other things.

    Very nice bench. This suggestion about the fixing of a vice will probably get lost in the volume of comments, however it may help someone. When fixing the back cheek of the vice use two plaques of wood the same thickness as the cheek fixed on each side (of the back cheek) to the bench itself. Fix the vice to the bench and fix the lining to the two plaques. The lining can extend an inch or so to each side of the vice. By using a thick piece of hardwood in the front lining you could bore a hole in it for a dog. The extra inch or more on each side will be very convenient for wider pieces of wood.
    I have used the Chinese copy of this vice for an end vice with thick lining and dog. Very effective.

    Great idea mounting the machinist vise on a jig. I was about to relocate my machinist vise to another bench to make way for my new wood vise and they can share space on my main bench. In a small shop with space at a premium, most items are either dual purpose or relegated to a shelf to collect dust. Btw, Have a Merry Christmas and a fantastic new year!

    Everything about your well bench is useful and practical. That seems to be the theme. Since every other woodworker on RUclips has an ornamental display of planes and antique tools that will probably gather more rust and dust, I would rather see your tool wall hold tools that you will probably reach for every time you work on a project - or at least find a way to display just the ones you use most and store the rest in a secondary location.

    Good info about Irwin. Harbor Freight is also a low end vise with same problem as yours; that is, the steel plates are not parallel so you have to remember to compensate when cutting the blocks for the vise by cutting at a slight angle. Notice the non parallel near the beginning of your video as well as at 10:51. Best wishes enjoying your shop and sharing your joy of woodworking with the world.

      Thank you Doug for pointing that out, it is around the 10:30 mark. I was focused on the planing and never noticed the bouncing and deflection the bench had at the first viewing. By no means am I discrediting the bench or its capabilities but I wouldn't have expected it to have the much distortion. I may reconsider and use full supports that go from bench to the ground.

      For a heavy bench the braces should go to the floor. It looks amazing but the flex in that bench would drive me nuts.

    • @libertyfivefivesix
      @libertyfivefivesix 7 лет назад

      For someone who had built this bench as their primary bench though, well, they'd be having to build it "twice" then - right?

    • @kennyH20
      @kennyH20 7 лет назад

      You can still keep the bench but I would relieve the angle on the current braces by bringing them to the floor. I would also move them closer to the outer edge especially if you plan on mounting a vise.

    Oh those highly affordable little bench vise are amazing quality for the price. They should be worth like $80! I just got mine last week and I was supremely impressed. I will be making a mini work bench that I can use on the floor or clamped to a bench top with that very vise. Very much recommended, you will not be disappointed.

    How do homesteaders make enough money to sustain themselves and their family? Not all of us have corporate sponsors and are flush with RUclips money. I'd love to get off the grid and into nature but I don't know how to get started. I love your channel but it seems like a facade to me.

    • @wranglerstar

      When we moved into this place we had nothing. We had to borrow money from family. If you continue to make excuses how life is not fair you'll never get out of your current situation. If you would like to learn how we did it get our book from the library. Do you think a successful channel just happens? Do you think corporate sponsors randomly choose people to throw money at? These things come from years of hard work. My advice to is stop whining, role up your sleeves and get serious. Nobody is going to give you anything, you need to earn it, now get to work,

      Cody's done a number of great videos on how to get started, which is mostly budgeting, getting a good understanding of money in and money out and prioritising paying off debt and living cheaper. When they first launched this adventure they didn't have a RUclips channel bankrolling them, Cody was still running the Jeep parts store online I believe, and Mrs. W appears to be a very conscientious budgeter. It is a lot easier to find reasons not to try and do what we want, but we need to ask ourselves, which will yield a better and happier life? Surely it is better to strive towards what we want even if we risk failure, rather than give up before we've even tried.
