  • Come and join me as I make a trip to Riverside, California to meet Rob Roy and see his amazing desert garden and his remarkable cactus collection. What I thought was just a quick trip to pick up a few cactus plants, turned out to be one of the best trips I have done for my hobby of growing desert plants. Rob Roy is very knowledgeable and he unselfishly shared a few tricks to help me hone my gardening skills.
    This is part 1 of 2 videos. Part 1 focuses mainly on Rob Roy's garden and his collection. Part 2 will be more educational as Rob Roy teaches us a few propagation tricks. My plant haul from his collection will also be in Part 2.

    Amen. I have been collecting for 40 yrs and developed a very easy follow able routines. depending upon my location. I use plant guide zones. I’ve lived all over the US.
    My father taught me how to garden plant rotate species. He was from Czechoslovakia. He taught me to prepare for winter. Buy propagate in Oct. Then all my yard I trim trees And yard bushes outside November 1st ALWAYS. I have been a successful green thumb. Develop the routine suited for your area and go with the flow. If you love plants shrubs trees bushes read about your area and follow that advice. Obviously it’s worked for you beautiful garden. I’m not any different than the next plant lover but I keep a journal, and I pay attention to plant map zones watch and I keep the weather records to "your to keep my plants happy and healthy. Happy planting and taking care of them as I take care of myself.

    To Rob Roy it's really nice to see someone who isn't afraid of hacking and chopping Cactus and other plants for propagation purposes I grew up in Tucson in the landscape construction world and I've done a lot of experimenting myself I'm probably one of the few people that's been able to transplant saguaros and have them grow thanks for your good work

    Hi Ana! Wow, 😮 that is a totally awesome garden. A cacti lover’s paradise. Rob might be more into cacti than us! 😂😂 I know some of his cacti are older than my children. 🤣🤣 Truely magnificent. I wish I was there then I’ll never leave and just get lost in paradise. Woohaaa...driving a nail through to get them to produce pups! It hurts me to even think about doing it. 🙃 I know the beheading method but this? Ultimately I know the pups would cover the scared area. Wonderful video and looking forward to part 2. 👏👏👍👍

      Correct Molly. I don’t have the heart to drive a nail into my cactus either but it does make sense if you want quick propagation. I was mesmerized in his garden. I did not know where to focus first as there were so many to see! The big cacti in the ground were truly amazing! 😍🌵😍

    Behind and a little to the right of the somewhat common crested golden barrel is a plant I've never seen before ... from video frames 3:20 to 3:23. Wish you could get a better picture of that with a bit of explanation. I think its a euphorbia, but not sure. Looks like a stack of six balls with a vertical brown stripe on each ball, and two arms of 3 balls each. Very unusual. I also have a couple unusual cacti I did not see in his video. Wish I knew a way to give them to him. They just get too big for my place.

      Oh, yes sorry. Crests are genetic defects (also sometimes due to injury) on the apical meristem or the top growing point of a cactus. Instead of growing upward, it grows sideways in a line and new growth points form along that line. This creates a fan-like shape that curls. 🙂

    Hello Ana, that's a impressive collection of cacti and succulents. Wish I could get my hands on some cacti seeds. Great video.
    😅 I need some advice again. So, my green Maverick opuntia, the mother plant, has died. But, in her passing she has left long stems that are still healthy. I have taken cuttings from many of them and I'm just waiting for them to callous. However, I have discovered a long stem, which seems to have already calloused over naturally in the pot. Removal was very easy.
    My question is, do I make a fresh cut over the callous of this stem to propagate the cutting?
    or
    do I simply repot it and hope that it roots?
    I really want to save this plant. Any advice would be a life saver. Please help!

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  5 лет назад +2

      I’m sorry about your mother plant. For opuntias, the roots usually come out of the aerioles. If the end has calloused already, then it should be fine planting it in dry soil first. Just make sure some aerioles are buried in the soil. Hope this helps. 🙂

      Thank you soo much for the advice. I can say for sure its not easy taking care of cacti. And your doing a awesome job about educating people about them and how they should be cared for.👍
      Cacti seeds are super hard to find. They are soo epic to see grow. I shall enter that raffle the moment it is live! 😁
