    Great stuff!
    Regarding 4:50.
    How come we don't bevel the edge but instead add an edge loop around the ring?
    Or does it do the same thing?

    Aren't you likely to get distortions in the smooth preview when you adjust the edge flow of the major shape after you cut the second cylinder out?

    thank you! I freaking hated booleans as it always jacks up my topology and makes the hole look like a weird soggy bit. This helped me understand how to manually fix and give it more supporting subdivisions.

    This is made even easier (for more complex models) with Mayas new remesh & retopologize tools. Just do the booleans, remesh then retopoligize and alot of the time you're left with a really clean model

    This works but it isn't a great strategy for getting a smooth result - moving the original edges around like that creates distortion.

    hey i applied booleans and did a retopo also but i got issues in mesh,there is hidden edges under the faces how do i get rid of that? its a stubborn edges no matter how many times i deleted its not going.

      Go to Vertex Face mode and select the edges (they’re going to select like vertices) you want to delete, then go to Select > Convert Selection > To Faces and then you can delete the hidden edges.
      Most of the time, the “hidden edges” are really very narrow faces that are very difficult to select in other modes.

    great video josh, i wanted to ask a question. when i retopologise a boolean model sometimes it kind of goes green and i have to insert a new shader, why does it happen?

      @Some one sometimes ai standard also goes green but it's alright, i usually assign a new one. I think it's not that big of a problem 😅 great content btw

    using maya2023 and sometimes it wants to work, and then it doesnt..when I was trying to extrude the one hole to give it a edge loop, the face of the area around it covered up the hole automatically

    I liked watching this tutorial and found it interesting. However when I tried to copy this, I ran into numerous issues that you glossed over and/or didn't mention/explain. Would have been helpful for those of us newer users.
    I wanted to update this and say that after doing the tutorial again, really making sure to attend to all the nuances, I was able to get good results. This was a really helpful exercise especially as a person who is quite new to some of these tools. Thanks again.

    Suddenly I don't know what happen.... Maya is saying "my shelf cannot be readable". PLZ help sir...
    edit: even I deleted my all my Maya files and copied again from my backup folder... it is showing still it cannot be readable.

    this method creates bending. you need more spans in your curve prior to the boolean operation if u want a clean result.
