  • We’ve all heard that our eyes are the windows to our soul. But, it may be more accurate to say that our eyes are the windows to our health.
In this passionate and poetic talk, Dr. Harbir Sian explains how undiagnosed systemic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and even brain tumours can be discovered within these one inch orbs inside our heads - and how regular eye exams can not only preserve your vision but possibly even save your life.
Dr. Harbir Sian is an award-winning optometrist whose passion lies in education and his profession. Harbir studied Kinesiology and attained his Bachelor of Applied Science degree at Simon Fraser University. He then moved to Boston to study at the New England College of Optometry and graduated with a Doctor of Optometry degree in 2010.
Dr. Sian traveled to South America and the Middle East to perform eye exams in underdeveloped areas and has been awarded Young Optometrist of the Year by the BC Doctors of Optometry. He has written many blogs, started multiple video series including For Your Eyes Only with and Chiasma, and launched The 20/20 Podcast. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I always look in her eyes and get lost in them, I haven't ever had a photo of her saved because it would be great to have something to keep looking at and when i get lost in her eyes I get scared that she might notice and get creeped out 😅

So what does it mean that the last optometrist i went to said my eyes are beautiful. Not to me but in his paperwork. 🤔🥰 What did he mean???
Edit: i am nearsighted and he said to me that i am lucky. 🤨🤔 I only wear glasses to drive or if i watch tv.

As Christ said when he lived on earth:
"The eyes are the lamp of the soul."
And what most people have not realized is that all eyes radiate to the world the inner quality of being. They radiate the inner consciousness which blesses what it sees-or shrivels it up with its own bad temper.
Study the eyes of the predators, one and all, and compare their fierce intensity with the eyes of the non-violent herb and grass eaters-there you will see the ferocity of the one and the tranquility of the other.

Everywhere, there is reciprocity of love flowing between living things-plants, insects, birds, animals, fish-and their environment. Only the predators put themselves outside this love consciousness.

Good lecture Dr Sian, Thanks. However, you make the case that the eyes are part of the brain and vision is the most involved neurological system but then reduce your scope to describing ocular disease and eyesight, which typically have only a little to do with vision. I agree that Optometry has learned that ruling out ocular disease is very important but it should be recognized that this was not its original mandate. Many practitioners are interested in ocular disease but the public, not so much. It pains me to see so much effort going into optometrists duplicating ophthalmology services for the 5% of people with eye disease while ignoring the 25% that have vision problems that might require an understanding of some of that neurology you're talking about. You're not wrong about what you say but I think you're just scratching the surface as to what optometry offers.

Optometry is not duplicating ophthalmology. It's always been a battle between the 2 professions of optometry scope expansion which is a political one and not a skillset one.
