    I have always felt that Ghosts had the best Create a Class system we’ve ever seen in a CoD game. The evolution of Pick 10 to getting more perk points for dropping items was near perfection.
    As a side note, I also loved Extinction (the alien/cryptid mode) and I think it never got love because it wasn’t zombies. The team play mechanics, the rank progression system, and the mission structure all impacted future iterations of Treyarch zombies, but the fan base didn’t like Extinction as a mode, and I’ve never really understood why.

    So I am a junior game developer. The reason that you don't see that awesome perk system. I also think it was really good. Is because it's hard to make at first. Lots of initial work to make the whole system. But also a lot of internal testing to try and balance it. Once it's built and tested internally it is awesome to go back and make changes when players test it even further. It's sad how game studios are more about less effort more rewards then making a fun game.

    • @Frozander
      @Frozander 2 года назад +23

      It is not that hard to do. You just give a budget to each loadout and make it so that items cannot cost more than that budget. Sure it is "harder" than basic 3 perk system but not by much. COD already supports N amount of perks (specialist for example). Hardest part is balancing and that's not really a development budget time, you can create basic balancing internally and then use the already announced beta phases to further balance it. You can still balance it as you go.

    • @gamerbg294
      @gamerbg294 2 года назад +6

      And in my opinion it is a fairer system, because the more beneficial the perk, the more expensive it will be (for me the problem with the cod ghosts version is that it provided a very high amount of points, which makes you spend on very good perks without limiting you too much), because I have a concept that the greater the variety, lower is the probability of a good balance (in this case, it may even seem that I contradicted myself, but as I said if the system provides few points, that way the player, despite the many options, will be able to choose only a few perks, which is the best way).

      As for Extinction, I disagree. It's repetitive, but in that same vein, so is the actual Zombies. And it's not a Zombies ripoff, it was the one time they tried making a mode that WASN'T just Zombies, but then afterwards, everyone just ripoff Zombies and just does the same thing.

    This system also makes post release adjustments easier. You don't have to rework the perk, just adjust its cost in points. Reworking or straight up removing a "controversial" perk is a tough decision. Same with just leaving it, so it becomes a must have, or an oddity that no one picks. Fine tuning the cost over a patch or two is much easier to pull off.

    From the first time I saw it, I've always been a supporter of the ghost perks system concept (despite some problems when it was applied in the game, such as: having many perks doing few things, it would be much better perks with more functions and consequently a smaller number of them; the variation of the cost of the perks, since they vary between 1 and 5 points, would be much better between 1 and 3 points; and finally and most importantly, the high number of points that is available for choosing the perks, because could spend on very good perks, however, without limiting you too much in choosing others, in my opinion, the ideal would be 6 points avaible, but of course, obviously the perks would do multiple functions for it to be balanced), too bad it's very difficult for it returns, because even if the concept is good, I believe that IW doesn't want to risk using a concept of a very controversial game.

    • @Dragoonsoul7878
      @Dragoonsoul7878 2 года назад

      No it wouldn't it was discussed in this video, doing multiple things led to it being over powered. Their combined effects still exist but are more balanced. Lets say a 3 points is basically a normal perk.
      This means those combined perks (Normally 1+2 points) would force you to get a side effect you don't want or something that can't be balanced. Meanwhile Ghost, Flak, or other main perks cost 3 points. The result is those bad perks go almost completely unused because you're lost 1-2 points.
      A big common issue was Loud Footstep Audio + Equipment Detection as a combined perk. Leading to one of the strongest perks in all of CoD.

    I disagree a little bit with Stopping Power being the only option for your Perk 2 slow in MW2. You said Danger Close was the other option, but Lightweight was often selected for those who also had Marathon in their Perk 1 slot that wanted absolutely maximum mobility. Cold-Blooded was also a good pick over Stopping Power. Often UAV’s ran rampant in those days and people hated dying on a killstreak all because they called in a UAV to find exactly where you are. In other words, the choice was a lot more difficult than just either DC or SP…

    I think one underrated of ghosts was the kill streak and the “point streak system”. The kill streak system was your normal 1 kill = x amount of points towards your kill streak, how ever the “point streak system” worked off of how many kills you got in the game and didn’t restart after death, since it was super forgiving it would usually be supportive items like an ammo crate or ballistic vests, but my favorite one was where you called in a helicopter and you were a passenger on board with a sniper , it was super fun but was also just as hard since you would have to actually lineup shots and hit them. Still my favorite thing in ghosts and they haven’t added it since

    Honestly, this has been something i have said since the game has been out. By far one of the smartest and most game changing things that, while it still was saddled with previous ones metas and with the insanely overrated Blops2, is the thing most people remember positively about the game.
    Also one thing with the maps i found pretty quickly was they were made more with the off game modes, like the micheal myers and infected (which they *really* leaned into and got some really cool shit) and Ground war. In normal games youd waddle around for a while and rarely see anyone, but with just that team size increase for ground war, youd really not run into that as often. What i think happened is there was a big out cry/wish for more ground war designed maps from MW2 fans, as that was *the* mode for most people (next to S&D), so they made the maps bigger to compensate but then with the whole divorce issue, werent able to get the full go on just making all modes bigger as well, and just did the standard without changing the maps to fit the smaller size teams, hence the issues. Also the ttk is about normal for CoD games, its really Blops2 that massively increased ttk that made it feel too fast, and later games that kept the Blops2 ttk.

    Insurgency Sandstorm actually has a system similar to this. When you’re creating a class all the gear and weapons are unlocked from the start, but you have a limited amount of points and can spend those points to put stuff on your character. Because of the point cost, there’s a really engaging decision-making process of what you want to prioritize. Maybe you want to kit out your primary with tons of fancy attachments, but then you don’t have any points left for your sidearm. Or maybe you want to give yourself a ton of armor and become a walking tank, so you sacrifice some grenades and attachments to make that happen. It’s super cool and forces you to think a lot more when you’re creating a class

The dlc gun system in bo3 (previous game) was broken and drained you of money due to how rare the drops of guns. But with infinite they brought back the variant system from advanced warefare, so even if you got the lowest rarity of the dlc weapon you unlocked it. I was able to get every dlc gun in the game without paying any real world cash within like a week or two of playing the multiplayer. Compared to bo3 where that is either a lifetime task or a many hundreds of dollar investment.

    Might be apples to oranges right here but this reminds me of the subclass 3.0 system in Destiny 2. For those who don't play, you get 2 big perks called aspects that really affect the subclass, and then depending on how strong the aspects are they get 1-3 fragment slots each (stronger aspects have less slots) for you to insert fragments into (which are minor perks for the class).
    The system definitely needs work with the variety and balance but I found the "build a class" approach really interesting, and once you have a framework like that it's easy to expand upon it and make tweaks to the outliers.

      Interestingly enough, death streaks conceptually have some merit balancing-wise - just... maybe less so in a twitchy shooter like CoD? As a catch-up mechanic, I mean. Skill and game knowledge takes you far in a twitchy shooter with low TtK - but when a team is running away with the lead and getting kill streaks to push their advantage, matches could be settled minutes in, barring a miracle. That being said, I've mostly conceptual knowledge of CoD as a game, so my observations don't hold much water.

    Something that was stupid about Vanguard was the Dead Drop field upgrade, there was an exploit I would do with the dogs where you get two kills away from dogs, activate dead drop, get the last two kills and call in the attack dogs. When you died you would respawn again two kills away from having dogs again, so you could have a stream of dogs flowing into the map and your teammates could do this too. It was super scummy, but I couldn't stop laughing at the enemy's death chat hearing them yelling about the damn dogs, I was in tears half of the time.

    I'm at 10:10 and here was one of my classes
    2 shotguns
    Mts-255 & Bulldogs with those extra damage shells.
    Agility, Quickdraw Marathon just perks that made me fast overall.
    C4
    I'd run in and start blasting

    The perk feature was genuinely the saving grace of this game, that and infinity wards litany of genuinely fun party games, especially infection. Search and rescue was a pretty nice highlight as well that I appreciated and miss, although I haven’t bought a new cod game since bo3, and only picked up bo4 this year for zombies.
    If they had just tweaked some models for player characters so they stood out more (especially on 360, ps3 hardware), and upped the ttk time just a tad it would’ve made the game genuinely an okay one. There was still the issue of maps that were not well designed aside from a few, although iirc the dlcs fixed this (but I only bought the first one) with the added effect of splitting up the fanbase, which was the main issue with old cods dlc implementation
    TLDR; a solid 5.5-6 game, it wasn’t horrible, but it was a huge downward slide from bo2. It had some cool features and honestly with some really small tweaks that infinity ward refused to implement it could’ve been atleast a 6.5

    this reminds me of perks in Deep Rock Galactic. It's a co-op PvE shooter that i absolutely love, and they overhauled the perk system a while ago to be a bit similar to this one imo.
    there's a ton to choose from (25 - 30 iirc), and all of them have multiple levels. At first, you had 5 slots and each one could hold 1 perk - but some were objectively better than others - like Iron Will, which let you bring yourself back to life for 12 seconds after dying. Perk points are really easy to get too, so you'd be able to unlock and fully level everything within a reasonable amount of time.
    I've clutched so many missions with it, it's insane. Gave you just enough time to revive 1 or 2 people and possible heal. After the timer ran out, you'd go back to being downed (and said timer was never on-screen, which makes it even more urgent). If you managed to heal yourself, you'd fully come back to life as if you'd be revived. The important thing though is that it had a 5 minute cooldown, so you could use it multiple times per mission and clutch even more.
    It was pretty unbalanced though, so it got nerfed when they overhauled perks to the current perks 2.0 system.
    There was no distinction between perks either (no active vs. passive or anything), other than only being able to equip 1 of each (e.g. can't stack Iron Will 5 times to make it last for a minute or more) (equipped perks were also always at max level since lower levels are just objectively worse).
    However, they overhauled the entire system a while ago, splitting perks into passive and active. You can have 3 passive perks and 2 active ones, but just like the old system you've got to unlock all the slots after the first one. Makes you more selective at the start, and allows you to learn what each perk does a bit easier.
    iron Will was heavily nerfed alongside this update, making it kinda meh (at max level it would just bring you back to life for 12 seconds) and restricting it to only once per mission. Took an update or two, but it finally got to where it is now: At max level, you stay alive for 12 seconds, increasing your damage, giving you slowdown resist, and reloading all your weapons when you activate it.
    although i miss the old cooldown-based one, it's still really damn good - but it's better balanced now, to the point where a lot of players don't use it (whereas before you'd be questioned if you didn't use it).
    i suppose it's not quite the same as this after all lol, but this video still reminded me of it so i figured i'd write a comment discussing an old overhaul to one of my favourite games.

    Another benefit of this system is the additional killstreak category that trades the big bombastic weapons for more perks, and you can balance your killstreak and the "maxed out" bonus around those perks. Wanna get maxed out really fast: put in a bunch of low-cost perks, the bonus's kill cost is lowered the same. Wanna get better perks quicker: put those in earlier on your streak, making your maxed out bonus harder to reach.

    This. Absolutely this.
    I LOVED the CoD Ghosts perk implementation. It was so freeing and varying. Yes you'll always get the tryhards doing that one exact build every time but dammit there were other viable customization options!
    And I will stand by my idea that Extinction wasn't that bad. It was a good mode, the first map was a bit boring but definitely was more a test to see if the mode was viable, and the next two maps were basically just fantastic additions.

    I think a big reason why we won’t see a system like this anymore, is due to the increase of allowed weapon attachments, and increase in number of attachments in each category. Many of these perks can be added in some way to your gun, and when we can have like 9 or however many attachments it’s up to per gun. I think you can only have one or the other (massive gunsmith or massive perk system)

    I think Extinction was a blast. Sure it wasn't Zombies, but it was new, different, challenging, with some fun replayability, and a halfway decent story.
    The Perk system was huge, and honestly, should be the only way perks are handled moving forward.

    I absolutely loved ghosts and so did my little brother. I joined it reaaaaallly late as I joined on ps3 and bought it preowned at gamestop with my own money. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and me and my brother would do splitscreen hide and seek with the ghillie suits on that jungle map with knives. The campaign was okay, extinction wasnt all that for me, but the multiplayer was amazing as someone who loves quick ttk's.
    Thankfully we can all relive our old cod experiences with either original hardware, xbox one/series backwards compatibility (god bless), or plutonium and iwx as they provide a way to play custom servers with people and they are all playing! from mw 2 and ghosts, to black ops 1-2, world at war, and mw3. A lot of these games are populated on steam as is though but some are not and it is a godsend to be able to replay these games again with *less* cheaters.
    I hope this comment reaches the audience who cares and enjoy!

    What I picked up was that the more customization CoD has, the better the game could be. Obviously good maps, skins, and kill time are important, but customization of actual tools for the player will make the game all the much better.

    I liked the character customization. Like giving you customization of different body parts. I think it should come back ad it allows you to make more interesting characters. It also gives you the ability to make yourself stand out. If they add a camo system to make everything match up.

    The first time I ever saw this system was with the original Homefront game. I found it super fun and intuitive and was pleasantly surprised to see it when I first got Ghosts.
