This is such a diamond in music history. Came here by watching a documentary about the best covers of ABBA. There will never be a better cover than this one. The simplicity, dark, bass sound gives this lyrics the meaning why they ever where wrote for.
When I first watched this, I cried like a baby. As a grown German man, we are programmed to never admit to this! Even so, it is very meaningful to me. I love Portishead, and much love from Hannover.
Whatever the land we grow, whatever we are made, where we are from where we go; hearts are build the same and first hear this sound before watching it we are all the same; we have to know where to bellow. The truth, if it exists; this song talks especially at the very moment of simply humaity, at the spark ou enjoying. We are all with you. From france, Bordeaux, planet earth, around the sun... below the waste
they are kinda dead, but there are still many ppl with such vibes and idea for music, I hope new bands take on their style of dark jazz hop. dark cloudy vibes forever
No one can replicate their sound. No Lo-Fi chill radio station will ever capture the authentic gritty essence of old tapes like Portishead as oppose to some artificial preset on Ableton. They are ear candy to the max!
Nothing haunts the soul like Portishead. The darkness and the agony is authentic, but it's so elegantly expressed in an artistic form that all the negativity becomes transcendent. Thank you for some of the best music on earth! I still look forward to a new album even though the wait is forever. I know it will be more than worth it once more...
I also got here after seeing the documentary about the best covers of Abba songs. Had no idea of Portishead, interested in pop songs from long time ago and having done such a master piece out of it... I have been ABBA fan since ever and for ever - but never would think anything like this could be possible. They made such a dark, "existential" song out of a bit sad, but generally positive ABBA song... Although it doesn't fit my ABBA experience well, I really love it. In a way, it also proves the genius of Bjorn and Benny in their music making.
If you're honest, the song was intense already from Abba. Just listen to it closely and feel it. It's hard not to feel the despair in it, even that it's from a pop band and was released in the 1970s. Should better not be listend to by a depressive person …
This version is so hauntingly awesome.. And just drips with that Portishead sound. I freakin love it. Im just sad it took me about 4 years to find it after release.
Verse 1] Where are those happy days, they seem so hard to find I tried to reach for you, but you have closed your mind Whatever happened to our love? This is so overwhelming, and such incredibly emotional timing, with the recent situations across the world. She really is singing this to all of us. That ending is so powerful. Nailed it once again, Portishead.
Si sienten que 3 discos de Portishead no son suficientes para satisfacer sus deseos de oír a Beth Gibbons les recomiendo su álbum en solitario "Out Of Season" que es una reverenda obra maestra.
I saw this on the big screen at Glastonbury in tribute to Jo Cox, everyone watched in silence, it sent shivers down my spine, extremely powerful video and music absolutely fantastic

I thought ABBA's version is really smart, because it reminds me of neglect and abuse and how those things are often obscured to outsiders. So the pop melody functions as a cover-up for the meaning of the lyrics, just like how women often hide their wounds with make-up, long hair and sunglasses. If you'd hear this as someone's ringtone, you might think "that's funny...", it's a subtle calling out for help without getting caught because "it's just a silly pop song", right? This cover is nice, but it doesn't really add anything to the lyrics. It's just sad.
@@DarkAngelEU I see your point of view, for sure. It's like "Every Breath You Take". A really, really dark song dressed up in something light and bouncy. I do adore this cover, though. It's the other side of the same coin. It might not 'add' anything to the lyrics, but it's an interpretation that takes the meaning of the lyrics and lays it bare. It's basically the sound of someone who HAS hidden that abuse and neglect from the world for far too long, and has finally torn out that romanticism and the rose-colored glasses are not just taken off but crushed beneath their feet. It's this longing and desperation for all the joy and beauty that love brings into a person's life, and the realization that somewhere along the way it's completely slipped through their fingers.
I find it absolutely amazing how Portishead has turned this once happy upbeat song by ABBA into amazingly dark emotional masterpiece. Then again, this is the same absolutely amazing band with such emotional songs like "Roads", "Sour times" and "Glory box."

Despite the upbeat melodies and bright voices of the two ABBA girls, there was always an underlying darkness and melancholy in many of their songs.
+chelseacharger so true...
You nailed that one on the head. That is precisely why I like ABBA, intelligent and somewhat dark lyrics.
All you have to do is remove the F major chorus. The verses of the ABBA version are also pretty creepy due to them
being in D minor.
It proves that ABBA is timeless and fits to anything: pop, disco, rock, punk, gothic, metal...

When you're gone
How can I even try to go on?
When you're gone
