CG works well when making large crowds, extremely large characters and extreamely fast movements, they probably used CG because of the large crowds and extremely fast movement needed however when animating the quite tame human portion they stuck to regular animation.

Thats just kind of how things are though. If i solve nine math problems, but the tenth one is wrong, you immediately notice that it was wrong. Nobody would care if i got them all correct, unless they were specifically looking for it. Same with CG, same with everything. The only exception is when something goes the extra mile and goes from being good CG to being incredible CG, where everybody goes "oh man, that looks so flippin good!"
that one moment in episode 15 of kill la kill when ryuko was dodging jakuzure's beam attacks was fully done in CG, and it took me waay too many rewatches to finally notice it
i mean. not attacking mappa, they did a great job with the time they had.. pretty much attacking the bastards, that said it had to release end 2020. Such a shame for a well written und animated (s1,s2,s3) anime/manga. Watched the new episode and i was so fucking disappointed in it, when i think about what wit or mappa could have done with it, if they would have released it a year later. These cgi fights titan on titan feel so weird. Episode 1 was good but titan on titan just looks so fucking bad with no impact.

Land of the lustrous is probably the best looking 3D anime of the 2010’s Edit: people are saying Beastars is a competitor, which is but from what I found it’s traditional 3D and 2d flash. I meant cgi anime

man the amount of hate aot has gotten for cg. Episode 6 wasn't that bad. If anything it was great. I hate the attack titan being cg but its not so bad that i can't watch the show. Y'all need to chill out. The armored looked weird in eps 6 because reiner didn't have enough energy/ willpower so he only half transformed. The cart and jaw titans were handled spectacularly and the beast was fine too. The crowning achievement is how they did the colossal.
I feel like the cg in aot season 4 fits Because the titan looks more bigger and it feels more realistic unlike the other season the titan animation seems a bit restricted
@@Garatano22 well yeah, collosal titan isnt used much and that specific reiner transformation is used once so just like the female titan it would be more work to make a 3d model and animating it rather than just 2d animating it.

They’re gems, their entire body is the color at their hair/eyes and it comes off when their in water. They put a powder over everything but their hair eye (except phos...we don’t talk about that). I never really thought of the movement as laggy, but more as..”flowy”? The movement is really smooth, but their movements are more exaggerated and such. I agree with hair thing though-!

If they are trying to make an entire anime with CG I would say that it is impossible to make that unnoticeable; at that point, it is a stylistic choice. Examples of this being done (and being done well) are Land of the Lustrous and Beastars, which are both made by Studio Orange who specializes in that style. Despite the fact that these animes and others of similar style and caliber are easily noticeable as CG, they could still be considered "Good CG." Honestly, it's up to discussion and preference, but it is certainly an interesting argument.

Monty Oum was a fucking legend, and it's a damn shame the animators for RWBY didn't seem to learn a single thing about animation or choreography from him. That man could probably take Rock Paper Scissors and turn it into the most epic, stylish, and cinematic sequence in history.

@@jstout333 i personally didnt mind the bad cgi of overlord that much, it was so short in each season and its not like any antisipated fights were using cgi. only fight was the ainz vs 240k soldiers. the story was so well made and the carracters were so likable the fights were almost the 3rd most liked aspect of the anime. sure . seeing each of the guardians full strength fight would be epic. sience we allready have seen shalltear and ainz going at it. i felt like the politics and getting to know the world were more entertaining than the full shalltear fight.

Yeah the armies in the first 2 berserk movies are kinda wonky, the first a lot more than the 2nd, but I dare say the 3rd movie is what I wish a Berserk anime could be.
While watching the Berserk movies I was like: Yay Berserk - switch to 3D - Eww bad CG - switch to 2D - Yaaay Berserk ... The anime on the other hand ... I could not bear it past the second episode ... :(
As a big fan of the old 1997 version of Berserk, I wasn't too fond of the movies. But after Berserk 2017 I look back at them with glowing rose tinted glasses.

@Malum Animation isn't the same thing as visuals, necessarily. Until Volume 4, RWBY didn't really look good other than Monty's fights. Volume 4 looked decent and 5 looked alright, but the only good part regarding the visuals in the early volumes suffered for the most part (with some exceptions like Yang VS bandits or Qrow VS Tyrian) because Monty is now dead. Then there's Volume 6 which has pretty good fights and looks even better than Volumes 4 and 5.
The land of the lustrous is one of the best cg anime I've watch this far, the graphics and story, with calm background music is so good it calm my mind

No , man . I love wit but titan cgi isn't their strength. The only good cg titan is colossal titan Season 2 and rod reiss titan , other titans (and at some times horse and organic objects)are in background so you can't focus on them but when you do it seems weird. When titan cgi of mappa (except episode 6) is so good that at some times I can't say if it's cg or hand drawn .
A friend of mine showed me Land of lustrous. At first I was like "huh, a CG anime. Well I watched KF so I don't mind the CG" I tought it looked weird but I care more about a good story rather than the graphics BUT when the first started to show all those crystal light effects I totally understood why it is CG. It's the best choice for that anime and that kept me going. The anime it isn't that great but just looking at the pretty CG effects it's worth it.
Meta Pronouns like "him" or "he" are never used. Characters will say "-kun" or "aniki," however, actual pronouns used by characters are "they" or "them." Androgynous pronouns. I wouldn't really take the word of a fan wiki anyway lol
sorry,I meant the translated version of the manga. They're currently about 68 chapters in. Whenever required,they (the translators) will opt in for male pronouns.
You realize cg animations don't get beyond 24 fps, that is if people are willing put effort into it and lose all semblance of life. And 2d animes in Japan are animated at 8 fps as a standard and 12 fps if they want to put effort into it?? Right?? Even Disney tv animations are 12 fps while their old 2d movies were 24 fps done in 2s, which is 12 fps but allows more fluidity if necessary
CerealKiller I have never heard a movie reach 30 fps. That's absurd and not mention redundant. For a live action movie 24 fps is all you need. Because unlike games, you don't need high fps to make it fluider. in fact the major difference I see in games running in 30 compared to 60 is just that they run faster. Nothing else, specially nothing with animations since when the games that run at 60 fps switch to cutscenes, they instantly drop the fps From 60 to 24 since when it's prerendered and cinematic, your eyes can't tell the difference. It's only noticeable through gameplay in button input delays. 60 fps comes handy in game but not when making a movie. Real life captured in cameras doesn't get fluider than 24 fps. And 2d animations merely immitate that in lower framerates. Mostly because opting for lower frame rates around 8 and 12 fps make life easier for the animators
Yeah, RWBY does it right. Especially the newer seasons since (3 onward). Since switching to Maya they got even better, though with the loss of their creator/choreographer, the fights have gotten overall worse (with a few great gems).
Tokatsu I strongly disagree. I mean sure, from a somewhat objective standpoint the story and characters may have improved a bit, but that only succeeded in bringing it out of "charmingly janky" without managing to reach "genuinely good." So the whole thing got a lot more boring. The end of season 3 was absolutely amazing, but after that they dropped the ball so hard that someone three floors down got a concussion.
I didn't really pay much attention to what he was saying, because I was too busy waiting for the inevitable mention of Houseki no Kuni. A show that's not just looking good compared to 3D anime, but compared to all anime.

yogeshrii manoharan it was an 80s ova of a popular manga (golgo 13, a famous 60s manga) The reason it looks bad now is because the technology it used is purely mathematical in application. For comparison, tron, the first Hollywood movie to employ extensive use of computer generated imagery for a cut was released an year prior to it.
Rest in peace, Monty Oum. Actually can't find better choreographed, structure, and imaginative fight scenes anywhere. Still haven't found a replacement for him. I wish he'd been around to see the increase in production quality for RWBY and been able to make more fights, himself.
I found it hard to take the story seriously after the first couple of season, but despite the bad PS2 era cutsceen look, the fight scenes were dynamic as hell. They took what they had and made the best of it and it was damned good to watch.
The team can still make decent choreographed fights even w/o Monty, as seen on the short fights in Volume 5 between Blake and her friend which name I can't remember and the fight between Cinder and Raven, however, they are highly restricted because of the horrendously bad writing of the show.
Nohb'dy 11(TL;DR at the end) The series peaked at Volume 3 with the best writing (imo) and animation within the first 3 volumes, however the fight scenes weren't as extravagant and well choreographed as they were on the 2 previous volumes (since, sadly, Monty died at the beginnings of the development of the volume) but they still were pretty decent, the best one being the fight between Cinder and Pyhrra; after that everything went downhill. Volume 4 was weird, it had a lot and nothing happening at the same time, since it tried to focus on a lot of characters at the same time in only 12 episodes so none of the progress felt really organic, as an effect of that it felt really slow and had very little fights happening, and the fights that were there weren't really that interesting (I would say that the fight on the trailer of the V4 was the best fight), it worked more as a setup volume, preparing for the things that will happen in the future, kinda like V1 but not exactly the same. With V5 they are about to hit rock bottom, it had a lot of uninteresting talking and painful pacing, nothing really happened until like the last 5 episodes of the Volume and even then it wasn't that good, it had more fights than V4 but they were awful, didn't have any choreography and they were just throwing punches back to back, the animation was also really stiff and it has the worst battle of the whole series; I really doubt they will improve with Volume 6 since they also have rushed the production of volumes after V3 but I'm willing to give them one last chance. TL;DR Not really, everything after Volume 3 is a downhill full of disappointment.
I think it isn't as bad as people think. There are a lot of different things you need to pick up on to fully see why certain things happen, like certain references and personal motives.
The entire Jungle in Disney's Tarzaan was in cg(back in 1999). It looks authentic as hell and doesn't clash with the design choices. They also used a lot of cg in Aladdin as well as Beauty and the Beast(only one shot in this movie is noticeable where you can differentiate cg and hand drawn). Ghibli has been doing it as well. A lot of the monsters in the back ground for Spirited Away was CG back in 2004 and barely clashed with the art design. And all of these are static scenes. The cg animators in Japan either need to get good or not be lazy.
There is a modern disney short film which being done fully 3D then later get rendered 2D fully by their engine its called paperman,which is in my opinion "fully unnoticable"

I didnt mind the anime much. I dont think the CGI did it any favors, but I was still able to watch and enjoy it. I would 1000% agree for it to be made by a better studio, but its still better then nothing imo. Also yes, I did read the manga for those comments that will eventually say "you should read the manga, its SOOO much better" bla bla bla.

Yes the best looking CG Anime and one of the best looking Anime in general (also the story, characters, worlds ect. are all amazing as well, because looks alone can't carry a show) Land of the fucking Lustrous (Houseki No Kuni) deserves more recognition and attention, also a season 2. I hope Studio Orange's next Anime be it season 2 of Land of the Lustrous or a different Anime (Adaptation, Original ect.) is fully 3D and look as good or even better than season 1 of Land of the Lustrous.

I just watched all of Beastars, stayed up all night to watch it. My god, that show has some of the BEST CGI I've EVER seen in an anime. I often time's not only found myself not even noticing it was CGI but better yet, noticing it was IMPROVED because of it. The framerate felt smooth as fuck, a phrase I got used to saying to myself throughout those first 12 episodes. The art is beautiful, the facial animation is FAR more expressive than anything Polygon Pictures has EVER done. Not only does it NOT suffer from the stiff facial expressions of something like Knights Of Sidonia (which I still maintain is a great show despite the CGI, even if it is often a hindrance to the show and not as much a benefit), but it doesn't have the terrible low framerate like it Knights Of Sidonia had either. It honestly might even better looking than The Land Of The Lustrous even, since the animation felt so smooth, and the art style felt more seamless and less obviously CGI. I kept finding myself being so shocked at how great it all was. Only to realize after I watched the whole show it IS made by the same studio as Land Of The Lustrous, which basically explained EVERYTHING to me about how the hell it had such great CGI for an anime.

CG works well when making large crowds, extremely large characters and extreamely fast movements, they probably used CG because of the large crowds and extremely fast movement needed however when animating the quite tame human portion they stuck to regular animation.

man the amount of hate aot has gotten for cg. Episode 6 wasn't that bad. If anything it was great. I hate the attack titan being cg but its not so bad that i can't watch the show. Y'all need to chill out. The armored looked weird in eps 6 because reiner didn't have enough energy/ willpower so he only half transformed. The cart and jaw titans were handled spectacularly and the beast was fine too.
The crowning achievement is how they did the colossal.

They’re gems, their entire body is the color at their hair/eyes and it comes off when their in water. They put a powder over everything but their hair eye (except phos...we don’t talk about that). I never really thought of the movement as laggy, but more as..”flowy”? The movement is really smooth, but their movements are more exaggerated and such. I agree with hair thing though-!

If they are trying to make an entire anime with CG I would say that it is impossible to make that unnoticeable; at that point, it is a stylistic choice. Examples of this being done (and being done well) are Land of the Lustrous and Beastars, which are both made by Studio Orange who specializes in that style. Despite the fact that these animes and others of similar style and caliber are easily noticeable as CG, they could still be considered "Good CG." Honestly, it's up to discussion and preference, but it is certainly an interesting argument.

@Malum Animation isn't the same thing as visuals, necessarily. Until Volume 4, RWBY didn't really look good other than Monty's fights. Volume 4 looked decent and 5 looked alright, but the only good part regarding the visuals in the early volumes suffered for the most part (with some exceptions like Yang VS bandits or Qrow VS Tyrian) because Monty is now dead. Then there's Volume 6 which has pretty good fights and looks even better than Volumes 4 and 5.

No , man . I love wit but titan cgi isn't their strength. The only good cg titan is colossal titan Season 2 and rod reiss titan , other titans (and at some times horse and organic objects)are in background so you can't focus on them but when you do it seems weird. When titan cgi of mappa (except episode 6) is so good that at some times I can't say if it's cg or hand drawn .
theres a mobile game called honkai impact, the animations are fluid and the cg isnt bad either (in my opinion idk anything lol)

A friend of mine showed me Land of lustrous.
At first I was like "huh, a CG anime. Well I watched KF so I don't mind the CG" I tought it looked weird but I care more about a good story rather than the graphics BUT when the first started to show all those crystal light effects I totally understood why it is CG. It's the best choice for that anime and that kept me going. The anime it isn't that great but just looking at the pretty CG effects it's worth it.

the houseki no kuni wiki defaults to calling them with male pronouns,and so do the translations of the manga if I recall correctly.
Meta Pronouns like "him" or "he" are never used. Characters will say "-kun" or "aniki," however, actual pronouns used by characters are "they" or "them." Androgynous pronouns. I wouldn't really take the word of a fan wiki anyway lol

Bad CG in anime always looks like its dipping below 30 fps.
You realize cg animations don't get beyond 24 fps, that is if people are willing put effort into it and lose all semblance of life. And 2d animes in Japan are animated at 8 fps as a standard and 12 fps if they want to put effort into it?? Right?? Even Disney tv animations are 12 fps while their old 2d movies were 24 fps done in 2s, which is 12 fps but allows more fluidity if necessary
CerealKiller I have never heard a movie reach 30 fps. That's absurd and not mention redundant. For a live action movie 24 fps is all you need. Because unlike games, you don't need high fps to make it fluider. in fact the major difference I see in games running in 30 compared to 60 is just that they run faster. Nothing else, specially nothing with animations since when the games that run at 60 fps switch to cutscenes, they instantly drop the fps From 60 to 24 since when it's prerendered and cinematic, your eyes can't tell the difference. It's only noticeable through gameplay in button input delays. 60 fps comes handy in game but not when making a movie. Real life captured in cameras doesn't get fluider than 24 fps. And 2d animations merely immitate that in lower framerates. Mostly because opting for lower frame rates around 8 and 12 fps make life easier for the animators

Since switching to Maya they got even better, though with the loss of their creator/choreographer, the fights have gotten overall worse (with a few great gems).
Tokatsu I strongly disagree. I mean sure, from a somewhat objective standpoint the story and characters may have improved a bit, but that only succeeded in bringing it out of "charmingly janky" without managing to reach "genuinely good." So the whole thing got a lot more boring. The end of season 3 was absolutely amazing, but after that they dropped the ball so hard that someone three floors down got a concussion.

The reason it looks bad now is because the technology it used is purely mathematical in application. For comparison, tron, the first Hollywood movie to employ extensive use of computer generated imagery for a cut was released an year prior to it.

I found it hard to take the story seriously after the first couple of season, but despite the bad PS2 era cutsceen look, the fight scenes were dynamic as hell. They took what they had and made the best of it and it was damned good to watch.
The team can still make decent choreographed fights even w/o Monty, as seen on the short fights in Volume 5 between Blake and her friend which name I can't remember and the fight between Cinder and Raven, however, they are highly restricted because of the horrendously bad writing of the show.

Nohb'dy 11(TL;DR at the end) The series peaked at Volume 3 with the best writing (imo) and animation within the first 3 volumes, however the fight scenes weren't as extravagant and well choreographed as they were on the 2 previous volumes (since, sadly, Monty died at the beginnings of the development of the volume) but they still were pretty decent, the best one being the fight between Cinder and Pyhrra; after that everything went downhill.
Volume 4 was weird, it had a lot and nothing happening at the same time, since it tried to focus on a lot of characters at the same time in only 12 episodes so none of the progress felt really organic, as an effect of that it felt really slow and had very little fights happening, and the fights that were there weren't really that interesting (I would say that the fight on the trailer of the V4 was the best fight), it worked more as a setup volume, preparing for the things that will happen in the future, kinda like V1 but not exactly the same.
With V5 they are about to hit rock bottom, it had a lot of uninteresting talking and painful pacing, nothing really happened until like the last 5 episodes of the Volume and even then it wasn't that good, it had more fights than V4 but they were awful, didn't have any choreography and they were just throwing punches back to back, the animation was also really stiff and it has the worst battle of the whole series; I really doubt they will improve with Volume 6 since they also have rushed the production of volumes after V3 but I'm willing to give them one last chance.
TL;DR Not really, everything after Volume 3 is a downhill full of disappointment.

I think it isn't as bad as people think. There are a lot of different things you need to pick up on to fully see why certain things happen, like certain references and personal motives.
The entire Jungle in Disney's Tarzaan was in cg(back in 1999). It looks authentic as hell and doesn't clash with the design choices. They also used a lot of cg in Aladdin as well as Beauty and the Beast(only one shot in this movie is noticeable where you can differentiate cg and hand drawn). Ghibli has been doing it as well. A lot of the monsters in the back ground for Spirited Away was CG back in 2004 and barely clashed with the art design. And all of these are static scenes. The cg animators in Japan either need to get good or not be lazy.
There is a modern disney short film which being done fully 3D then later get rendered 2D fully by their engine its called paperman,which is in my opinion "fully unnoticable"

I didnt mind the anime much. I dont think the CGI did it any favors, but I was still able to watch and enjoy it. I would 1000% agree for it to be made by a better studio, but its still better then nothing imo.

Yes the best looking CG Anime and one of the best looking Anime in general (also the story, characters, worlds ect. are all amazing as well, because looks alone can't carry a show) Land of the fucking Lustrous (Houseki No Kuni) deserves more recognition and attention, also a season 2. I hope Studio Orange's next Anime be it season 2 of Land of the Lustrous or a different Anime (Adaptation, Original ect.) is fully 3D and look as good or even better than season 1 of Land of the Lustrous.
yeah, that show really has a lot going for it. Definitely my favorite from last year, even if I can appreciate that something like Made in Abyss is overall "better."

I just watched all of Beastars, stayed up all night to watch it. My god, that show has some of the BEST CGI I've EVER seen in an anime. I often time's not only found myself not even noticing it was CGI but better yet, noticing it was IMPROVED because of it. The framerate felt smooth as fuck, a phrase I got used to saying to myself throughout those first 12 episodes. The art is beautiful, the facial animation is FAR more expressive than anything Polygon Pictures has EVER done.
Not only does it NOT suffer from the stiff facial expressions of something like Knights Of Sidonia (which I still maintain is a great show despite the CGI, even if it is often a hindrance to the show and not as much a benefit), but it doesn't have the terrible low framerate like it Knights Of Sidonia had either.
It honestly might even better looking than The Land Of The Lustrous even, since the animation felt so smooth, and the art style felt more seamless and less obviously CGI. I kept finding myself being so shocked at how great it all was. Only to realize after I watched the whole show it IS made by the same studio as Land Of The Lustrous, which basically explained EVERYTHING to me about how the hell it had such great CGI for an anime.
