Old friend of mine's dad was a fireman in Monroeville, and was part of the safety crew for Dawn of the Dead. He had a bunch of interesting pictures from the shoot. Some interesting stories too.
In reply generally: A lot of the stories are raunchy, and sordid. So probably not great material for YT. Lots of alcohol, coke, and loose sexual behaviors. One of the stories that isn't so NSFW, that I can remember, was a guy begging them to wash off his zombie make-up with the fire hose. They declined at first, because of obvious reasons. However, after they were nearly done for the day, and had a bunch of alcohol in them, they gave in. Blew the guy off his feet. They turned the hose off, ask if he was ok, and he said "I make bad decisions when drinking". Aparently it didn't even get most of the make-up off, mostly blasted the prosthesis off his skin. You can aparently see him, soaked, missing patches, in the final bit they shot that day, which was just a crowd shot of the extras. Everyone else in the shot is dry. He wasn't even supposed to be in the shot, they just threw him in for funsies.
I agree with your sentiments about shopping malls. In the 1970s through the 1990s, when malls were in their heyday, the very concept of an empty and abandoned mall came straight out of a dystopian nightmare scenario of survival in the end times, such as a zombie outbreak or a similar pandemic that would make COVID-19 look like hay fever. When the pandemic hit in 2020, malls had long since become considered passé and were firmly in decline due to the meteoric rise of online retail through Amazon Prime, so empty and abandoned malls became our reality.
i think it would be interesting if you tried exploring L4D2 workshop maps too, just in case you're interested, there are mods that fully removes the AI and hud and let you explore the maps just by yourself
Paintball and airsoft are pretty common in malls. Used to live near one that had go-cart racing, one of those sky diving simulation fan chambers, rock climbing, paintball, and a skate park.
This makes me want to see an episode of Librarian playing a level of left 4 dead, the safe rooms in it have a sort of "creepy and comfy" feel. Same goes for dying light I suppose. It would be interesting to see what he thinks of their respective safe rooms, their vibes, and the incorporated environmental storytelling.
9:30 Some Left 4 Dead custom campaigns do write up their own wall writings. Although more often than not they'll reuse existing ones if they fit the environment and backstory.
I live in a pretty rural area in central Louisiana, and there's a mall in the "city" (more like a large town since it's a really small city with no really large/tall buildings anywhere) near where I live, and back a decade ago it was very lively and bustling with business, but when I went to go visit it again recently, it was very low-activity and most of the businesses were closed down. There were entire sections of the mall just completely empty, dark and abandoned. And it was the middle of the day, too, so it wasn't like they were closed for the day. They're saying that the mall itself is losing business and may shut down soon, which is kind of sad because it was one of the biggest attractions to our small city. Not to mention the $6 burger meal at the food court, which is rare to see around here for so cheap
Not just the Crossroads Mall, it looks to be a port of its rendition from the Left 4 Dead campaigns (specifically the "Clean Up" map. #3 in DC, 4 in the others). Top tier campaigns, sad the Director's Cut was broken by the TLS update and needed to be jankily chopped up to get working.
Rewatching your old gmod vids and got the idea to explore old empty cod maps. The sense of nostalgia mixed with that eeriness of knowing that the map was once so populated is so interesting. It really is a creepy and comfy feel. I love seeing your channel grow and trying new things and would love to watch you explore a few old cod maps.
Hey man, been watching and loving your videos since Exploring haunted gmod maps, just wanted to tell you how much i appreciate your unique style of videos. I recommend that you try out abiotic factor, the game might not be what you usually play, but it does have a very special cosiness and creepines to it!
15:17 L4D2 corpses/infected have a shader that isn’t supported by gmod so they turn into a mess like that (there is a mod for it). Plus at 1:20 Pac-Man cereal boxes.
Yeeees. My favorite videos you do are definitely the Gmod ones, especially the horror maps. They're how I found your channel (which is funny because they were randomly suggested to me from RUclips. I don't even play Gmod or game on PC.) I like to watch/listen to them when going to bed. Your voice is very quiet and chill. Helps me sleep.
As someone who lives a half hour away from the real Monroeville mall, I can say in PA at least that I wouldn’t be surprised to see a paintball place in a mall in PA. I’m far closer to the nearly abandoned Pittsburgh Mills mall, which features an indoor nerf arena. It’s a surreal experience walking that mall, the whole thing is basically one big circular hallway with the only open stores or restaurants existing at the exits, everything in between being barren barring one or two random venues that aren’t typically even stores. It makes you wonder how some of them stay afloat. Last time I was there I sat on the catchers mitt shaped chairs outside the dicks sports which is only accessible from outside the mall in their front entrance for some reason, and a bunch of unsupervised kids ran in the nearest mall entrance screaming until their mom came in about 3 minutes later. I kept walking after that and got passed by an old man watching Alex jones on full volume out loud on his phone while walking the mall. It makes me sad to see the state it’s in, but if the mall could never be restored to its former glory, I think it would fit a horror movie very well. I know this barely relates to the video or my initial point, but it’s rare I get to talk about my interest in western PA malls.
I love the way you voice your thoughts, it is your thoughts and not just something to fill the silence. And the way you analyze the environment and take catalog of even the smallest thing, it really helps me feel as if I'm not missing anything when I close my eyes to sleep 😂
I went and took photos in an old mall just outside of town. There were very few people and the place was pretty run down, so I'd look into all the empty stores and take photos. There was a space behind a wall that just had windows leading to it. Since my grandma was with me, she was able to tell me that that space was originally a little restaurant, one she had been to in the past. One that I had never seen open in my life, as I was born past the prime of the mall. There was also a fountain, now torn down, that looked like a bunch of pan flutes. My dad told me about how he remembers when the water ran through it, a time I also never saw.
it's always something about the gmod videos, they're so calming and interesting, and cozy, watching these before going to sleep or late at night is truly an experience❤
Not sure if anyone's said anything about this but given the way you commented on the paintball place I'd just like to provide some insight:) Paintball places are pretty common inside of malls, usually the ones that are on the way out in terms of their general lifespan, and some places (at least in my experience in the deep South of America) Eventually the paintball place can even just get the whole mall on certain dates. But I haven't been to any of those yet so perhaps I've read incorrectly, love your videos! 💜
I used to work security at a mall here in San Antonio it was weird being inside walking around with no one there and the music low, I also worked night shifts btw
This sorta reminds me of the mall near me… after the pandemic it got hit hard… and most stores are either gone or moved.. it’s just sad, how a place once filled with life is now a shell of its former self…
not gonna lie I have your videos playing in the backgrounds while I play through heavily horror modded Fallout 4 like these videos are my version of the safety glock
I used to work at a bar that was part of an indoor/outdoor strip mall kinda place. When we took trash out, there was a maintenance corridor with doors that we had to walk down that spanned almost the whole complex. Very backrooms-y feeling. Every now and then, the lights would go out because it was set to a timer, leaving me in pitch blackness. It was very creepy and yet somewhat comfy as well.
Gnome Chompski is the Valve equivalent of The Watchers, the reason for the achievement in HL2:EP2 was because he needed to get to the Combine Over world in preparation for Epistle 3...... he's still waiting.
gnomes are definitely up to something Their mischievous by nature, but they're very territorial in movviciously attack anyone who messes with their space. So having one in your garden protect you from intruders. It's like putting a security system alarm sign that you're front lawn to deter robbers
Hi Librarian, I suggest you play the game Stories Untold, I belive it would pair up nicely with your narrative style of commentary, been a fan since you played Anatomy by Kitty Horrorshow
This is the earliest I’ve been to one of your videos me candle man. If you don’t mind, I’ll be shamelessly suggesting a neat and somewhat short indie game to you now. If I remember correctly, you love dream logic right? Well, try Yume Nikki then! (English translation: dream diary) It’s built essentially entirely around dream logic, it’s the perfect game to just walk around and interpret the things you see (which I know you love doing when the games aren’t spoon feeding the story to you like some paranoid babysitter / storyteller). Even if you don’t make it into a video I suggest you try it for yourself if you haven’t already, you’d be surprised how engaging a walking simulator like this can be! Also if you do enjoy Yume Nikki and want more, you can always try the thousands of fan games it’s spawned, here’s a few good examples before I go. -Yume 2kki (Way bigger than the original and conveys a wider range of emotions with its environments) -.Flow (Much scarier than the original) -LCDDEM (Fairly generic) Bye now lol
I really wanted an abandoned mall so i could use it for fnaf sb ruin nextbot chases, and this one is great. Now im gonna decorate it (just because i wanna) and this map is the perfect one for it. (Maybe not perfectly, due to a STRIP CLUB IN A MALL?! Just... Why?)
Does anyone else have an issue with the immersive flashlight turning itself on or off when you look left with the joystick in VR? Really bringing me out of the experience and idk how to fix it.
@@TheThunderGhost Yeah I can't figure it out either. I've messed with keybinds, INI files, everything. It's such an immersive feature that I don't want to disable it, but I also don't feel like exploring without control of my flashlight.
Honestly I wish you made some short form content of this sorta stuff. Maybe just talking about a map or a neat clip or two. Would be perfect for in the morning just as something to watch a couple of before hitting the showers and leaving.

That is so cool

If you can tell us any, I'd love to hear them.
