    I took one lesson from Billy, and I got some useful information, but mostly what I remember is sitting knee-to-knee with that guy and listening to him play that big blonde Gibson guitar - what a treat

    I doubt that Jay would remember me but I live in Australia and I bought a Gretsch Brian Setzer SSLVO from him. The guitar was even better than he described it. Jay took calls from me after hours (due to the time difference) and was a true gentleman. His knowledge is amazing. I sadly had to sell the Gretsch, due to financial woes (yes, even at my age. Must be a musician thing) I miss that guitar every day. I would highly recommend Emerald City Guitars and in particular Jay, if you're looking for an amazing guitar from an honest reputable dealer. Thanks Jay for being You!!! (P.S. I intend coming over there next year and you will be my first port of call).

    When they were playing these guitars in the 70’s they weren’t that “aged”. It’s just a well built guitar just like the new reissues.

    • @peepongdingdong9208
      @peepongdingdong9208 5 лет назад +2

      Did you know, you can age your guitar by playing it and gigging with it? Magic! Also if you want finish checking, make sure to not use a humidifier and temp control!

    • @Dagger_323
      @Dagger_323 4 года назад +6

      Definitely not _just_ like the new reissues. They don't make the electronics or the hardware anything like the originals. I know because I have a '59 Reissue and it didn't even begin to nail the sound of an original 'Burst until I nabbed a set of vintage hardware and changed out the electronics for early '60s PAFs and early '70s Centralabs (same build as the late '50s pots but a whole lot cheaper). Now it's literally spot-on and sounds every bit as good as the two original 'bursts I was lucky enough to play. In terms of the construction and the wood the modern Reissues are fantastic, and definitely better in that regard than a lot of tone wood snobs give them credit for. But in terms of the hardware and electronics, (especially the hardware) they still fall very short imo.

    • @Dreyno
      @Dreyno 4 года назад +4

      @@Dagger_323 They keep making little incremental moves towards the originals but the custom shop industry is built on never quite getting there. At both Gibson and Fender. If they just went and made an exactly authentic ‘59 Les Paul or ‘54 Strat (which they absolutely could), that’d be the end of the “quest”.

    • @Dagger_323
      @Dagger_323 4 года назад +3

      @@Dreyno exactly. This way they can keep hyping up their “updated” line every so often to get more people hooked into buying another R9 thinking _this_ time they’ve nailed it. The secret is the old hardware and electronics. Only two pickup winders I’ve ever tried make accurate PAF copies, and those are Throbak and Stephen’s Design (my nod goes especially towards the latter). No one is making accurate hardware. It’s surprising the radical difference the old hardware makes by itself, but when coupled with the old electronics the result is practically a different instrument. You could put that stuff in a Gibson USA Standard and it would sound closer to an original ‘59 than what comes stock out of the Custom Shop, despite the inferior build quality of the USA line.

    • @Dreyno
      @Dreyno 4 года назад +2

      @@Dagger_323 Gibson could make their own hardware or get special runs to vintage specs from small manufacturers. They’re charging 5.5k for a guitar. They could afford to use pots that cost 10 bucks instead of 3 bucks. Capacitors to vintage spec would cost a few cents more. Vintage spec wires the same.

    Whether it reflects the amp settings while this was recorded, I don’t know, but I do think that putting a tweed Bassman up to almost full with the treble on almost full is brave. You can play these with the treble and bass on 0 and the mid and presence on full and get a much better sound. You can also just turn the treble down and not do what they did here. I believe the treble and bass boost the sound whereas the mid cuts the sound - so the “neutral” setting is bass and treble on 0 and mid on full. Having the presence on full also does something in this configuration...I forget what.
    I think some of you are being a bit hard on the guy - he plays some nice licks. It’s really the amp that makes this harsh and not very pleasant. If he’s turned the amp down to half way and taken all the treble off I bet the rig would have sounded lovely.

      The power of product endorsement. If someone tried to launch a guitar now that was better than a Fender Stratocaster it would never be successful because everyone wants a Stratocaster. In the mid 60s the top blues influenced rock stars like Clapton and Page started using them. The rest is history. Beats headphones made bullions from paying celebrities to wear their headphones on the red carpet to give another more recent example of the power of celebrity exposure.

      @ian miller Other musicians are rarely even in the market for these things. Most of the time it's the lawyers and rich collectors that get a hold of them and take them out of their case every so often and then stick them back in where no one gets to hear them. At least Bonamassa uses the stuff in his collection for their intended purpose: making MUSIC. And you know when something gets into his hands that it is going to be well looked after. He shuffles his collection every so often anyway so it's not like these guitars don't circulate again. I find your contempt towards him a bit overblown.

It’s pretty obvious when you plug it in that it does stuff that other models don’t, i don’t think i’m alone in thinking that. Mind you, i’m sure today’s usa lespauls could give a historic custom shop reissue a run for its money.. Millmore - Actually imo, not overated by any means. Simply bad eq and marginal playing at best. I'm sure when this player is in his zone, he may sound better but not in this demo necessarily. In fact one could do a blindfolded A-B comparison vintage LP & amp vs. reissues and although there would be a difference, that difference would be unappreciable. In any case though, ust my opinion. Cheers...

    Not a very good demonstration, there was a definite lack of flow & rhythm in his playing, especially his fingering. This guy doesn't really have it. He should listen to Mike Bloomfield to organize his fingering technique. Not sure anything can be done about the lack of rhythm.

      Apologies but I agree with Gabriel P. If he is indeed a pro player then the standards of what is good ( technique, tone etc.) must be much lower in that neighborhood. Is a player in the context of a demo really NOT going to show his very best? So, if this IS his best, then I'm not spending time nor $ to go to one of his gigs. Otoh, he might sound really good when playing in his band.

      theshyguitarist that amp sounds like shit! I really don’t like the sound of these Fender amps at all; the overdrive is always fuzzy sounding and not tight at all. I guess people keep using these amps because that’s what they hear people talk about so they just use one instead of listening and making the decision themselves on what to use.
      These 58-60 Les Paul guitars with humbuckers usually do have more highs but this was even more pronounced from the setting of the amp; I agree with you about the treble being set too high here.
