Great and precise details. Hope you're a teacher...oh yeah, you are...to us! Thank you for such detailed information. Anybody can do this following your video and not left wondering about any part of it. Blessings...
Awesome! I never would have made the scarf by the directions on the back of the label. I was confused beyound belief. Thanks you much for posting this!
Very thorough tutorial, I don't have much patience but I was mesmerized so I couldn't stop watching, the audio is good enough and I have hearing problems, hehehe, Thank You!!
Thank you so much, I have made a few, did not realize that I was not doing it correctly, thanks for the help, sure it will make things easier for me. You are the best!!
This video is wonderful! Much better and more specific than the videos created by Red Hart. It answered all my questions. I wish I had seen it 3 days ago, before I started using this yarn. The camerawork is excellent and your specific tips very clear. I had no trouble hearing you.
I bought this yarn to give me something simple for one of my first knitting projects. I was so lost on how to do it until I found your video. Thanks for taking the time to lay it out for a beginner like me. Now lets go see if I can actually make it.
Awesome and easy. I love it and made my first scarf in one day. On to the next one. Thanks for the video. It was much better than the written instructions.
The yarn was on sale today, so I got three skeins...I was thinking that one skein would not be enough for one scarf, but it appears that it will be. I'm so happy I found this tutorial. You made it look so easy and I'm so excited to start! This tutorial is exactly what I need to start a new project for Christmas gifts! Thank you so much and have a great week!
Thank you for your feedback Susan. This was my very first video experience, and I learned a lot. I am in the process of creating another one to replace this one. Have a super day :0)
Thanks Juilee1009! You are so sweet! I actually do teach various things at one of my local craft stores and private lessons :0) Have a super weekend! Thank you for your compliment!
Hi Lorraine! You are so very welcome :0) I teach at a local craft store and I hear that regularly. I am so glad you found my video helpful. And, thank you for leaving feedback! I will be posting other knitting & craft videos soon, so please check back. Have a super day!
ive never kitted anything in my life. at first it was pretty tough, but you made it super simple to learn (once i started to watch instead of do what i thought you was going to say..lol) thank you so much!! my daughter is 7 and she's been wanting to learn for a couple months now and i didn't know how to do it. we are going to attempt to make them for Christmas for all 4 of her grandmas. :) i actually feel like i can teach her now. AHHH!!!!! im so excited!!!!
I am so happy to hear this Mandy! It is fun for kids to do this scarf, I have had some your girls in my class where I teach locally, and they love it! Have fun! :0)
just saw your video - I watched the guy from red heart yarn and kinda got lost = I thought I could knit but it just wasn't working - thanks to you, I made one and its great!!!!!!
This was soooo helpful. Thank you Yvette for posting this. I just finished my first knitted scarf although I've made a crochet one. The knitting method is so much nicer, it takes more time but the results are so much fluffier, hence nicer! Thanks again Yvette.
You're very welcome Cindy! I am so glad it helped! Yes, I like the knit or real crochet versions better, much more ruffly and fluffy and feminine! :0) Have a great weekend!
I wouldn't recommend this without still finishing it. I suppose the fray check could work, I will have to try it :0) Thanks mollycottontail, I appreciate your comment!
I watched your video to help me try and make a ruffled scarf. For some reason, I started off with 10 stitches for the first two or three rows then I noticed I was up to 12 stitches, so the next row I cast off one stitch and did the same for the following row, now I'm back to 10.Hopefully it won't be too bad for the first one. I have knitted before but not with this type of yarn and it's been so many years since I've knitted I kind of forgot certain things like casting off. Thank you.
Thank you Phyllis! I appreciate your compliments :0) If you are interested in crochet, I just added a crochet video this weekend with 2 different ways to crochet it as well. Have a super week!
God knew I was going to have some question. I have watched a few to see where to start and how to start. Why to use crochet or knitting. Why some where more belled loose then the other. You are awesome. I saw one so loose and bell like I wanted to learn to make it. God Bless You. I want to see more LOL nerves but ready. Oh wait it will take me forevery to unrow my yarn. I have trouble with my hands and shoulder so I all the help I can get.
Good morning Greta :0) Thank you so much for your compliment! In order to get the rufflier version, you skip every other hole/stitch. So you would work one, skip one, etc for the whole row. This will give you a much rufflier scarf, without the bell look. Check out my blog mentioned at the top of the page, it will show photos with measurements of all 3 versions (knit & both crochet). I hope this helps. Happy crafting! :0) Have a super day!
Your explanation is better than the redheart video or the joann's video! Except (as others have said) the audio is scratchy. Thanks for making the video.
Thank you Mzdiana82, I appreciate your feedback :0) This was my very first video, I definitely learned some things, haha! I am in the process of creating a new knit version of this video. I hope to have it up very soon, please check back. Have a terrific day! :0)
Great tutorial! I have taught myself how to knit and this is very simple. Loved your crochet tutorials as well. Could barely hear you though on this video.
Hi Yvette, I've been wanting to learn how to make these scarves for a while now and your instructions seem very easy to follow...I can't wait to get started! I was just wondering what the difference in length was between a scarf where you stitch every hole and the more ruffled one in which you stitched every other row? I think you mentioned there was a slight difference but if you could give me an approximate measurement, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks so much!
I would like to make my sashay scarfs a much tighter knit and not so "bell like". Can you give me any suggestions please?? I use size 8 wooden needles and i have been using every hole to try and make a tighter ruffle. So far i have also only used the red heart yarn and have not tried the starbella yet. I love your video, it made learning how to make the scarf very easy. thank you
Thank you Tracy. I only have the measurement of the one using every other hole that comes out nicer and rufflier, the one using every hole, would be longer and not really ruffly. The knit one is 65 inches using 6 stitches, you can see my comparison photos/measurements of knit/crochet versions I did, on my blog, I'll post it in the descriptor above asRUclips won't let me add links in messages. I hope this helps, Have a super day :0) Please let me know if you have any questions :0)
The audio wasn't that bad, but it was a little hard to hear. I got the basics, and I'm very excited to start knitting a scarf like this for my mom! Thanks for the video, I just started knitting and I could understand everything because you explained it in simple terms. Thank you! :)
Hi jacfle1, When this happens, try not to pull the yarn. If you are very careful, you can still find the cast on stitches even if it falls off the needle. If not, you can very gently pull out a couple stitches and then you will start to see where you left off. This is tricky!! Good luck :0)
Thank you Crafty Tami :0) I will work am working on another video...I will show how to do every other stitch, in the mean time, if you just use every other hole instead of going into every single hole as I showed here, you will get a rufflier version like the blue one you liked in the video. I hope this makes sense...I will try to get the other video completed quickly to show you and others. Have a super day!! I appreciate your comments, as it helps me make improvements on my videos :0)
Great video (except for that background noise :-) ). I can't wait to watch your crochet version next,. I liked the more ruffled version on the blue one shown at the end a little bit more. I didn't understand what you meant by "skip every hole" when making the more ruffled version. Any chance you're planning on a video showing that technique soon? I hope so! Thanks for this. I had no idea this "yarn" would be so cool to work with and plan to go buy some as soon as we dig out from our blizzard!
Hi Mzdiana82, I am in the process of re-creating this video, and it will show the frilly version..I hope to get it published here very soon :0) Have a great afternoon!
Hi Selina, No, but this happens to me and others that I know that make these scarves as well. We have not figured out why this happens. I wish I had an answer :0) Have a super evening!
I've knitted several of these ruffle scarfs and I actually learned something new from watching your videos. Thank you so much for posting. Could you explain how you closed the last stitch. Are you closing the last stitch with the thread by tacking the stitch's hole. I couldn't really see what was happening in the video. Have you crocheted or knitted any shawls/wraps with the sashay yarn, i.e. Sophia's Shawl on Ravelry?
Yes, every other space results in a fluffier scarf. I need to revamp my video, gonna have to make the time! :0) Have a super weekend both of you ladies :0)
Do you have a video for the blue scarf at the end where you skip a stitch each time? And yes, if you could re-do this one or do a new one with the skipped stitch version that looks more rufflely not "bell" like that would be great! It was really hard to understand what you were saying sometimes because there was a lot of static in the sound. Love this scarf and can't wait to get the knitting needles to try! Thanks for having such a precise and detailed video while taking your time to help us ladies out here who do not know how to knit yet!
Thank you Dawn :0) I am working on a new video, please check back here on my youtube channel. I am focusing on adding new videos regularly from now on on many fun creative subjects! Happy Crafting!
Any idea why my scarf looks more like "bells" at the beginning and ruffles towards the end? I'd really hate to pull the whole thing out and start over...I'm doing the knitted version...love the video, btw...thanks for any assistance!!
So this looks simple enough and i'm going to give it a shot. But i'm slightly confused on when you say to skip a stitch to make it more ruffled? Do you mean when you go to cast on you skip one hole and cast on the next one?? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question but i've never knitted before. Thanks for your help, i can't wait to try it out!!!
Hi Erika, when you are working with the yarn, use a hole and then skip a hole. I am creating a new video for this, please check back here on my youtube channel soon, I am making this one a priority for everyone :0) Have a super weekend!
HI Bernadette, only use every other hole in the yarn. If you use every single hole, you will get a bell shape instead of ruffles. (ignore the super tiny holes that hold the yarn together that create the larger holes, I am only talking about the larger holes. Please let me know if this does not make sense. Have a super weekend@ :0)
2/21/15: I have created an updated version of how to knit Red Heart Sashay ruffle scarf here: ruclips.net/video/JaL6dhZcCBA/видео.html This video is a little faster in the process, so I hope it is beneficial for all levels. I am creating one specifically for beginners as well, however, I think this new one is helpful for newbies as well, just need to rewind to watch the rows possibly, once you do it a few times, I think it will be a breeze for you :0) Thank you for watching! Happy Creating!
Hi Yvette, Loved your video em I correct in saying there pretty much made in the same manor with the exception of preference of knitting or crocheting? Also and I'm not criticizing please check your auto the first part was fine and the next I we had to strain to hear you. Keep up the good work. God Bless...
+BettyLCP Thank you Betty. The knit and regular crochet versions look very similar (fluffy and so forth). The second beginner crochet version comes out different, it has sort of a spine on one side and the ruffles all lay to the other side. Quite different from the knit and regular crochet version :0) I hope this helps answer your question. Have a terrific day!
I would make sure that you have about 6 inches left at the end after you cast off and only have one stitch left for your tail. I have a very short video on a different, much easier and secure way to end your scarf once you get down to that one last stitch when you cast off..check it out here: ruclips.net/video/mtfPl-YoeYw/видео.html.......This is the way I use and I love it! :0) Please let me know if this answers your question. Have a super weekend!
I had difficulty with the yarn twisting.. It seemed to depend on the direction that I turned the needle when I changed rows. It also seemed to make a difference in how ruffly the scarf turned out. When I always turned the needle clockwise, the ruffle was more like a bell, not ruffly. I can't decide which way to turn it.
Hi Donna, When you turn your rows, always try to turn in the same direction, otherwise you may need to turn your work to unwind it every few rows so this does not happen. I hope this makes sense :0)
I actually understood this one better than the crochet one! Both were great though. I do have a question - can you do more than 6 at a time if you want the scarf to be a little wider?
Thank you snicketpicket :0) Yes, you can add more stitches to make it wider. The average number I find most people use is anywhere from 6-10 stitches. You may need to add part of another skein to make it longer. Have a super weekend!
just so you know adding more stitches you will completely change the look of the color if it is a multi color pattern which can make it look off...just so you don't waste your time!!
Hello, a terrible thing just happened -- I'm knitting a ruffle scarf, 8 stitches on the needle, 4 of them slipped right off and disappeared. Now I have a weird loop of the yarn hanging there and a headache. How can I fix this and re-attach without unravelling about two feet of scarf? Thank you.
Are you also the same person that has taught us the crochet, no crochet way to crochet the ruffle scarves? I have followed these instructions on yu tube, and have quite a few trying desperately to figue out the amount of stitches and crochet size for each of the major typed fof frilly yarns. One would be for Starbella and the other one for Sashay, and yet figured out the exact size hook, using different amountt of loops you pick up, Could you give me a more definate idea. Must look frilly!!
I appreciate your comment xtissuepaper686x.. I will be remaking this video soon, please check back to my youtube channel. This is my first video and I did make it quickly for a few ladies that were students of mine at a local store. Thank you for your feedback as it helps me make changes and improvements. :0) Have a wonderful weekend!
That's awesome!! I love to hear this! :0) I actually posted a short video on my youtube channel here, it is called Easy Secure Way to End Your Ruffle Scarf. I think it is easier/better than the one I show here. You can use it for knit or crochet versions. RUclips won't let me insert link in the comments. I have not tried any shawls or wraps yet. I will have to check them out, another gift idea to get started on! :0)
I would charge no less than $20 for the standard Sashay type yarn and more for the more expensive ones ($10 or more per skein). You can buy a skein of standard Sashay style ruffle yarn with coupon for about $4-$5 and it will take you a good 3-4 hours to make one. I feel $20 is not really fair, but, that seems to be an average going rate made with one skein. I have seen some selling for $5 and get frustrated, this is just silly and undervaluing yourself & other crafters just to get a sale. This in turn gives buyers the expectation that crafters are cheap labor and don't place value on themselves. I have learned the hard way, don't sell yourself short, your time is just as valuable as anyone else. And in many cases a crafters' work is better quality, more detailed and worthy of the higher price tag. :0) I hope this helps. Have an amazing week and Thank You for your question.
Hi Lisa, I am not sure how this is happening...when you knit, it always gets turned at the end of the row, so it should always have ruffles on back and front. Can you give my more information or email me a photo? I am happy to try to help you with this :0)
i figured it out lol iwas not keeping it in my right hand i was switching hands lol. the easy one where it looks like bells now that is just on one side is the right
Hi Janet, If you are knitting the scarf, there should be a ruffle all around..the only way I know to get a spine with no ruffle all around is to crochet it using the "no-crochet-crochet" method that my other video shows. I am right handed as well, and when I knit it, I do get a ruffle. What brand ruffle yarn are you using? This can make a difference in how it looks, but I believe there should still be ruffle all around. :0)
You're so very sweet Ruth! Thank you :0) I am glad my video helped. Have a super weekend! :0)
Great and precise details. Hope you're a teacher...oh yeah, you are...to us! Thank you for such detailed information. Anybody can do this following your video and not left wondering about any part of it. Blessings...
You are a good teacher. This is the the 4th video I watched to learn how to make this scarf, and this is the ONLY video I really understood. Thanks !!

I have found if I knit in every other space on the second row I get a fluffier scarf and not so much of a bell shape.
Any idea why my scarf looks more like "bells" at the beginning and ruffles towards the end? I'd really hate to pull the whole thing out and start over...I'm doing the knitted version...love the video, btw...thanks for any assistance!!
Thank you eleartistic2013 :0) I really have to get the new one finished and posted :0)
How to make that blue one ???
Lovely video
So this looks simple enough and i'm going to give it a shot. But i'm slightly confused on when you say to skip a stitch to make it more ruffled? Do you mean when you go to cast on you skip one hole and cast on the next one?? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question but i've never knitted before. Thanks for your help, i can't wait to try it out!!!
Hi Erika, when you are working with the yarn, use a hole and then skip a hole. I am creating a new video for this, please check back here on my youtube channel soon, I am making this one a priority for everyone :0) Have a super weekend!
Do you have another way of knitting so it's more frilly than doing the bells?
Yvette, What do you mean by skipping every other stitch on the working yarn for the more frilly scarf or do you mean the beginning of each row?
HI Bernadette, only use every other hole in the yarn. If you use every single hole, you will get a bell shape instead of ruffles. (ignore the super tiny holes that hold the yarn together that create the larger holes, I am only talking about the larger holes. Please let me know if this does not make sense. Have a super weekend@ :0)
Thanks!!!
You're very welcome! :0)
which is fuller, the 2nd crochet scarf or the knitted scarf?
Could you not put fray check on the knot you tie to start to hold it better?
2/21/15: I have created an updated version of how to knit Red Heart Sashay ruffle scarf here: ruclips.net/video/JaL6dhZcCBA/видео.html
This video is a little faster in the process, so I hope it is beneficial for all levels. I am creating one specifically for beginners as well, however, I think this new one is helpful for newbies as well, just need to rewind to watch the rows possibly, once you do it a few times, I think it will be a breeze for you :0)
Thank you for watching! Happy Creating!
Hi Yvette,
Loved your video em I correct in saying there pretty much made in the same manor with the exception of preference of knitting or crocheting? Also and I'm not criticizing please check your auto the first part was fine and the next I we had to strain to hear you. Keep up the good work. God Bless...
+BettyLCP Thank you Betty. The knit and regular crochet versions look very similar (fluffy and so forth). The second beginner crochet version comes out different, it has sort of a spine on one side and the ruffles all lay to the other side. Quite different from the knit and regular crochet version :0) I hope this helps answer your question. Have a terrific day!
If you were to skip every other stitch to make it more ruffly, how many yarns will I be needing and will the ending (cast off) will be the same?
Have a super weekend!
just so you know adding more stitches you will completely change the look of the color if it is a multi color pattern which can make it look off...just so you don't waste your time!!

my yarn fell off the needle! how do I cast back on without disrupting the ruffle pattern? thanks in advance!
what size needle should we use for knitting?
Must look frilly!!
got it ... yeheeeyyy :-)
I am glad you found it :)
How much would ypu charge for a scarf at a craft show
I would charge no less than $20 for the standard Sashay type yarn and more for the more expensive ones ($10 or more per skein).
OK WHEN i KNIT THE SCRAF i DONT GET THE RUFFLE IN THE BACK WHAT AM I DO WRONG I AM RIGHT HANDED
Hi Lisa, I am not sure how this is happening...when you knit, it always gets turned at the end of the row, so it should always have ruffles on back and front. Can you give my more information or email me a photo? I am happy to try to help you with this :0)
i figured it out lol iwas not keeping it in my right hand i was switching hands lol. the easy one where it looks like bells now that is just on one side is the right
YvetteMarieCrafts
Hi Janet, If you are knitting the scarf, there should be a ruffle all around..the only way I know to get a spine with no ruffle all around is to crochet it using the "no-crochet-crochet" method that my other video shows. I am right handed as well, and when I knit it, I do get a ruffle. What brand ruffle yarn are you using? This can make a difference in how it looks, but I believe there should still be ruffle all around. :0)
sashay when i do the 8 loops then take 7 loops off it dont go around it shows the work on the back
