- Learn some tips and tricks for making scarves and working with Red Heart Boutique Sashay, the most favorite ruffling scarf yarn. Kristin Omdahl shows how to cast on, how to knit, and how to bind off with Sashay.
I opened it up and wound it up on an envelope before starting. Then unwound as I knit. Works great!
I ran across my first knot this evening while Crocheting with Sashay to make a my 4th scarf, I snipped the knot out and worked a double layer for just 2 loops on the hook. Next I got a needle and corresponding color thread and blanket stitched the outer edge together. The result was I can't even find where the separation was unless I pick through the scarf with a fine tooth comb..Thanks for the tip on working in or snipping out the knots, it was well explained and very helpful..
To keep the yarn from winding around while knitting, before you start, begin undoing the whole ball of yarn and straightening it out, and wrap it on a toilet paper or paper towel tube.
Kristin's gold cuff is absolutely rad!
Hi Juanita, the scarf that I just finished making was about 5 feet long. I cast on 6 stitches and skipped every other stitch when I worked it up.
Thank you so much for showing how to crochet a ruffled scarf. I have watched several videos and I am on my second scarf but my crocheting kept raveling out in spots even though I was pining it, but I didn't know what I was doing wrong. Then I watched your video and it was like a light bulb turned on in my head. I didn't know that you were supposed to pull your first loop through the first one to secure it. The other ladies didn't show this. I was about to get discouraged because I was having to go back and crochet so many spots over that was raveling. Thank you, Thank you so much. Nelda
I, initially, had exactly the same problem - a circular rather than an accordion pattern. This was caused by knitting into every mesh hole. I kept tearing the scarf out, because it just didn't look right until I watched a RUclips demo that said you should skip one mesh hole and then pick up the next hole to knit. This created a looser pattern, which gave a ruffly appearance. This got got rid of the spiral! YAY! Problem solved! I hope this little trick helps you.
Easiest tutorial I've found. Thank you.
Not much of a knitter but I'm going to try this. It looks so easy.
Thanks for the tutorial! Very clear instructions.............
Great video. I cast on 4 stitches to make the scarf longer because my girls are tall and I went through every 3rd stitch. Love the yarn.
I have watched several good crochet only ones, but found a much easier method. Its on here too. Frilly spring scarf I think but it goes up the chain one stitch at a time. No rows at all.Looks the same.
Hi Carol, when you turn your work is the scarf twisting around on your needles, or is the yarn coming from the ball just twisting up? Some people suggest turning your work in different directions to fix this, but I find it easiest to just flip the yarn ball and untwist it that way a few times. Another easy trick is to unravel the whole yarn ball and stretch the yarn out flat(ish) and then wind it around a cardboard strip to wind it back up. Keeps it flat and easy to work with.
Skip every other hole to get ruffle.. Also I have watched numerous videos to learn new techniques. Like fold over starting edge, poke needle thru top and then bottom,, knit that as i stitch, then cast on 5 more loops, again every other one. The knit back and forth.
Very helpful.
Thank you.
75% of the skeins I have purchased have had knots in it. You say this is an industry standard - I think the standard needs to be changed.
I got a replacement skein from you because of a knot. Guess what, the replacement skein HAD A KNOT IN IT!
I wish that you would have used a contrasting yarn to the color of the needle or vice versa. It would have been much easier to follow. I do appreciate the tip on the knot in the yarn and the binding off.
THANKS! Great video.
Any suggestions on how I can use this to make a shawl? I've got some black base with rainbow metallics and I already have enough scarves... So I was thinking making a shawl/poncho with this as I think it would look utterly fabulous.
The problem in the beginning is that the yarn turns with you and later when it sits in your lap it is anchored and twists so it makes twirls. Leave a longer tail when you cast on and then put a clip of some kind on it and clip it to your clothes and it will twist and make a nice twirl instead of a cup. If you don't have a clip you can anchor it between your knees until it gets long enough to sit in your lap.
Please do a sashay shawl.
Kristin.... Question here.... I knit coninental style.... do I still have to use this method as you show to do this project....
So I've just finished the Sashay scarf. I knitted into the very next stitch and am content with the amount of ruffle I got. Will probably try the every other hole technique next time. My problem is with sewing in my tail. I'm a visual person so I need to see where and how to sew in the tails of my scarf. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
pull the lsat of yarn thru the last loop on cast off, pull tight then tie off>
God bless you. Pleases explain how to crochet a Scarf with Red Heart Boutique Sashay.
I had the same problem but then I thought of a solution. I watched it in a mirror.
To add on another skein, I can just overlap and knit, like what you did for the knotted skein? I have a tall friend and I need to use 2 skeins for a long scarf. I am new at this and am not sure how to add another skein.
I loved the poopouri.com ad!
Thanks weezee30 but I don't know how that will help my problem. My problem happens once I knit, not anything with the tail. When I am knitting the layers they are forming in a circular pattern and not an accordion pattern. I don't think how I handle the tail would make any different to that. I think that Goldensassy might be right with knitting one row and purling one row. I will have to try it. Thanks for your post!
Hi temmytynn, I think I explained my problem wrong. Now Red heart is saying when you turn that the scarf should look like an accordin but mine is just going around. How do I get that accordin effect for the scarf? Thanks so much
I'm trying to locate the tutorial for the Ruffly Big Bloom pattern.
I'm having the same problem. Have you found a solution yet?
I have a problem with the yarn raveling all up while knitting! any suggestions to help that?!
I am having the exact same problem as Carol Wiley. I am following the directions exactly as described however it is coming out as a spiral with the ruffles going around and around each other. The problem is that she clearly says in this video that it should have an accordion look, with the ruffles going back and forth. Can anyone help with this?
I have watched all the video's but I am having the problem that when I turn my rows it is making a round ball. I don't know if this is right or not. Please could someone help me.
Does anyone know what do when this yarn falls off needle? how do you cast back on with out disrupting the ruffle pattern?
Good video
my problem is the finished edge has started to fray, does anyone have a solution to repair it, I found one large hole and at least 4-5 edges that have come apart, can I cut it or re crochet it in.
HOW LONG ARE THE SCARFS?
Hi cool yarn
I had a knot in my sashay too! I hate that. I suppose that's what I get for buying Red Heart.
When you're actually doing the knitting, you knit into EVERY stitch? I can't tell but it looks almost like you're skipping one every time you knit a stitch.
That's weird. I'm on my fourth scarf with this yarn and just came across my first knot. Actually, it's less of a knot and more like two strands sewn together. So for me, that's 25% knotted skeins. Not sure why you seem to be having such bad luck, but at least the knots hide well in the scarves.
They are both red and I can't see the movements
